Review: The magnificent Luaka Bop label has been showcasing the work of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah - a master of Afro sounds and rhythms that cut deep - for a while now across several albums and compilations. He hails from Edo State in southern Nigeria and is known for holding sermons of the religious as well as musical sort. After various volumes of work and the superb World Spirituality Classics 3: The Muslim Highlife Of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah record comes this new series of gems that show off his unique take on international rhythms across four long, ever evolving and always engaging grooves.

Review: David Byrne's Luka Bop label does a wonderful job of serving up some superbly obscure and unknown sounds but in a accessible and enjoyable fashion. Next up for the tirelessly digging label is a third volume of their World Spirituality series: The Muslim Highlife Of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah is an international collection of Afro rhythms that cut deep. Alhaji Waziri Oshomah hails from Edo State in southern Nigeria and is someone who holds sermon and serves up lyrics that warn about the vice of jealousy but the grovers also make his gathered crowd want to get down. He brings together both Muslims and Christians and this record will too.

I Forget Not Mother (5:52)
Review: Luka Bop continues to explore the catalogue of inspirational, but not particularly widely known, Nigerian musician Alhaji Waziri Oshomah. Like its predecessors, 'Volume 3' was recorded in the mid 1970s, during a "golden period" in which he recorded music that mixed electrified takes on Etsako/Afemai folk styles with highlife, funk and pop. It's inspired stuff all told, as is proven by fine, funky opener 'Omhona-Omhona', with Ebo Taylor style guitar licks and his own lead vocals rise above chunky bass and skittish Highlife drums, and the slowly building, organ-rich brilliance of the 10-and-a-half minute flipside opener, 'Oshiomegi Idonigie'.

Review: If you know Blunt's story then you'll already know how genuinely cool, exciting and creative he is. If you don't, look it up - he didn't even start learning to playing music until his mid-30s and he regularly touted his lo-fi, wonky community-spirited fuzzy funk by busking and performing at old people's homes. A big influence on Luka Bop founder David Byrne, Dean Blunt, Dam Funk and many more, this is the first time his work has been available since his highly sought after self-released album Gentle Persuasion. Scuffed, scratched and strangely mixed down, his status as an 'outsider funk' spokesman makes complete sense when heard in all his glory. Genuinely unique.

Review: Back in 1989, Talking Heads man David Byrne showcased his love of Brazilian music via a trio of compilations entitled "Brazil Classics". These volumes in turn focused on MPB, samba and Forro music. At a time when the so-called "World Music" scene was growing, Byrne's superb selections helped revitalize interest in Brazilian music in the U.S and Europe. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the series, Byrne's Luaka Bop label has issued this special edition vinyl box set featuring all three volumes in a bespoke slipcase. Even if you're a more serious Brazilian music aficionado there's plenty to enjoy, including landmark and lesser-known cuts from some of the true masters of MPB, samba and Forro. If you're new to Brazilian music, it should be an essential purchase.

Review: It was originally back in 1989, that iconic Talking Heads frontman David Byrne first shared his love of music from Brazil with the world. He dropped a three-part collection called Brazil Classics that focused on MPB, samba and Forro music. It was a nascent scene back then but has exploded now - still, these albums have withstood the test of time and are still essential. This is volume one and it has been remastered for the latest reissue on his own label. It offers a mix of landmark and lesser-known cuts from some of the true masters of Latin genres and remains a vital addition to your collection.

Review: RECOMMENDED
Last October, acclaimed saxophonist Pharoah Sanders turned 80 years young, and his input on this album is testimony to the fact he has clearly aged like a fine wine. Not that this is to suggest preceding outings were anything less worthy than this collaborative project, which sees Sam Shepherd, the British electronic artist better known to most as Floating Points, write nine spectacular arrangements which are then performed by said brass legend, alongside The London Symphony Orchestra.

The results are spectacular, and wildly far-reaching, albeit firmly rooted in jazz with classical undertones. From the movements that made this final cut, some are whisper quiet and delicate to the point of risking breaking off if you were handling haphazardly. Others are booming loud, musical jumbo jets landing at the end of another great crescendo. Whether hushed or monumental, though, we can feel every note and bar of this masterpiece.

Review: Milwaukee soulboys Kings Go Forth formed in 2007, and recorded The Outsiders Are Back three years later as an implicit paean to the increasing outsider status of soul music over the years. As might be expected for a band working in a style whose subculture was out of fashion - not least in Milwaukee - the "outsider" status was surely earned. Lead members Andy Noble and Black Wolf handled its songwriting and composition; inspired by classic soul and funk sounds of the 60s and 70s, the ten-tracker flaunts a ten-piece band to match, with horns, percussion, and vocal harmonies playing out in an unmistakably buzzing fever-pitch.

Review: Mysterious to the point of genuine legend, ever since Luaka Bop rekindled William's legacy flame in 2013 growing interest has developed in his work... To the point he's granted an interview and, rather amazingly, hinted at new material in the future. For this particular rerelease we head back to one of his finest albums; his second LP that would spawn the name of his live band who are still active to this day. Shining with strong Caribbean influences on "Beautiful Baby" and "Shame", stomping with strident Afrofunk twists and heavy studio techniques on "Atomic Bomb", slinking and skanking with the feel good "I Need You All Life", Atomic Bomb really is a work of beauty.

Try & Try (3:32)
Review: A lesson in how to follow up an incredible album: Tomorrow followed Onyeabor's incendiary Atomic Bomb immaculately. The title track instantly set the scene with more emphasis on electronic elements and studio techniques as William sermonises without pomp. "Why Go To War" is as insistent as its message thanks to a dense lolloping groove of highlife guitars and spiralling keys. "Fantastic Man", meanwhile, takes a leaf out of Parliament's playbook, rolls it up and smokes its own and "Try & Try" closes the show with country subtlety thanks to its slide guitars and blushing keys.

Review: Following 2012's fourth volume that celebrated the existential work of Tim Maia, here we find Luaka Bop exploring the legacy of William Onyeabor. A high chief and Kenyan diplomat who allegedly refuses to discuss his music, he self-released eight albums in the 70s and 80s and these are some of the many highlights. Stretching from the New York-influenced post-punk synth funk of "Good Name" to the most authentic Afro fusion of "Why Go To War", Onyeabor's range not only reflects his clear creative skill, but also the ever-developing international language of music during the fruitful period he was active. Who is William Onyeabor? Press play and find out yourselves...

Let's Fall In Love (9:56)
Good Name (7:13)
Review: Now a high chief and Kenyan diplomat, Onyeabor was once one of Africa's most forward-thinking popular music contributors. Released in 1983, toward the end of his eight album discography, the two extended cuts on Good Name reflect the emergence of electronic music and how it influenced African pop culture. With conscious lyrics about value and soul, both tracks capture one of the most exciting times in recent musical history. Truly unique.

Review: When people think of Brazilian music of the 60s, they're often imaging MPB, bossa nova or other such widely celebrated delights, but of course Latin America had its fair share of psyche exploration going on as well. Os Mutantes were one of the pinnacles of Brazilian psyche, taking some cues from the Beatles alongside a dash of tropicalia and wrapping it up in their own idiosyncratic style from their debut in 1968 through to the mid 70s, with some latter day revivals and reunions along the way. Now Luaka Bop have pulled together an expertly selected overview of the band's sound - a perfect primer into the best they had to offer for their short, bright-burning tenure.

Review: Pharoah Sanders was a monumental figure in the field of spiritual jazz, and this album from 1977 was his undisputed masterwork. Receiving renewed recognition in recent years as a collaborator, his passing in 2022 has cemented his legendary status, and so Luaka Bop take on the task of paying tribute with a lavish reissue of this landmark release. As well as the original album, this two-disc edition features previously unreleased live renditions of 'Harvest Time' and a 70-page booklet with interviews, rarely seen photographs and an interview with Sanders himself.

Review: The Browns is the family behind the Luaka Bop label's latest soul offering from the Staples Jr. Singers. It's a collective that has been going now for some four generations and they still play regularly totters, but not often these songs. Here, on three originals from the band, Annie, Edward, and R.C., are joined by their children, R.C.'s grandson Jaylin on drums, Edward's son Troy providing vocals, Annie's husband Willie on guitar, and their son Willie on bass. These tunes first appeared in 1975 on the band's only album and are now revisited for the first time. It makes for a truly gorgeous collection of soul sounds.
