Review: Listening to the awaited full length of The National's Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon's (Bon Iver) Big Red Machine project and it's hard not to think they've invested themselves in discovering deeper strands of electronic music, or production... if the sporadic drum machine work of "Deep Green" is anything to go by. "I Won't Run From It" however sees the pair back in their full choral beauty, presenting a song for thousands to potentially wave their hands this summer. This Big Red Machine was produced over the past two years involving many-a collaboration from New York and its artistic community, with the band themself saying: "this feels like something new-the process felt different and the outcome felt different." Check it.

Review: During 2020, when the global pandemic raged and most musicians were restricted to home recording, The National's Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver Justin Vernon decided to rekindle their Big Red Machine project, which last released music three years ago. With the help of a wealth of guest vocalists and musicians - most notably old pal Taylor Swift, Fleet Foxes and Anais Mitchell - the pair recorded How Long Do You Think Its Gonna Last, a yearning meditation on loneliness and relationship angst. It's a strong set all told, with the duo and their guests conjuring up memorable, melancholic songs that successfully stitch together elements of Americana, folk, gentle indie-pop, electronica and breezy, radio-friendly AOR.

Review: When it comes to plugging in mega stacks of amplified prog-rock, Vancouver-area band Black Mountain deliver a retro-futuristic sound that's as large as any Godzilla soundtrack. With Destroyer presenting a fifth LP on Bloomington label Jagjaguwar, Black Mountain go someway in delivering a bold cross reference of only the best and most legendary points of 60s, 70s and 90s rock n roll regalia. With keys and piano mixed with guitars, distortion and vocoders giving the band a futuristic, krautrock (Deutsche elektronik musik) edge, British psychedelic and raw but atmospheric arrangements give the band their own undeniable identity. With songs passing the bottle from slow dancing rock, flashy hair metal, to synthy guitars and cosmic arpeggios, the best metal of today is still way up there, on Black Mountain.

Review: Of all the reformations of classic '90s band to take place in the last decade and a half, Dinosaur Jr's - now nine years in - has been one of the most uplifting. Moreover, this has been largely down to this decidedly scruffy and unassuming outfit delivering nothing more nor less than the same old fabulous thing, with no drama or no rock star frolics, yet bucketloads of the raw magic, chemistry and style that always elevated their records far above the grunge-rock hurly-burly. 'Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not' has it all - memorable songs, wildly in-the-red production, a tight and electrifying band and J Mascis cementing his status as the greatest guitarist of a generation.

Review: Last year saw Angel Olsen break through with her highly acclaimed third album 'My Woman'. To follow that success comes 'Phases', a raw and intimate collection of demos, B-sides and rarities recorded over the last seven years. Compared to her previous studio albums, these demos are more stripped back - giving a little more room to showcase Olsen's powerful and broad vocals, which here err more on the side of vulnerability than the grungy confidence to be found on 'My Woman'. Considering this is essentially an album of unused tracks, the sheer quality and weight of these haunting and wry offcuts is nothing if not impressive, and in their chronological arrangement provide a guided tour of Angel Olsen's development so far.
