Sketches From A Distant Ocean
Sketches From A Distant Ocean (heavyweight vinyl 12")

Galileo (5:25)
Low Lying Fruit (5:42)
The Rowing Song (5:40)
Xarraco (5:20)
Review: Said to have been created after a long period of writer's block, Mark Barrott wrote much of Sketches From A Distant Ocean when he returned to his former home of Uruguay for the first time in a long while. The long break is said to have taught him about the value of self-expression and connection, and he returned to work with an invigorated enthusiasm. This has certainly paid off, as Sketches From A Distant Ocean shines through musically. Our picks are the sun kissed balearica of "Galileo", bossa nova-inflected island dreams of "Low Lying Fruit" and the evocative trip-hop journey of "The Rowing Song", which calls to mind his earlier output from the '90s as Future Loop Foundation.

Saviours Or Savages? (5:12)
Review: Say what you want about Ibiza, but the island has clearly spurred a new sense of creativity in Mark Barrot and his International Feel label. 2015 has seen International Feel on wonderful form, issuing records at a rate to match their initial rise and with the quality to match. Fresh off that excellent Gonno record, it's Barrot's turn to shine with the two track Bush Society 12" revealing the latest development in the veteran musician's sound. The title track effectively links two periods of Barrot's recent life, commencing with field recordings from his time in Uruguay and gradually unfurling into a ten minute epic that deftly nudges up the chug factor with aplomb as it goes. "Saviours Or Savages?" is a fine track too, a near perfect exercise in B-side Balearica.

Der Stern, Der Nie Vergeht (Domenique Dumont mix) (8:07)
Review: Globetrotting producer Mark Barrott now presents several fine remixes of tracks from his brilliant Sketches From An Island 2 LP release earlier in 2016. First up CFCF (Paper Bag Records/1080p) delivers a wonderful rendition of "Brunch With Suki", reminiscent of late 90s, drum n bass influenced electronica. On the flip, there's a wonderful gamelan workout on Nu Guinea Aquarium's truly breathtaking rework that's just made for drifting. Finally there's some smooth laid-back disco vibes, '80s style on "Der Stern, Der Nie Vergeht (Domenique Dumont mix)" and that boogie baseline with those pan-pipes work with each other in perfect harmony.

Tagomago (8:03)
Review: International Feel main man Mark Barrott has been unfeasibly productive in the last couple of years, releasing a string of fine mini-albums, and 12" singles, which touch on a variety of styles. This latest outing is every bit as magical as some of those excursions, with A-side "Cascades" offering a life-affirming blend of undulating, Tangerine Dream style synthesizers, soft touch, D.K style beat patterns, and breathlessly sun-kissed atmospherics. It's ambient, kids, but not as you know it. The Ibiza-based producer moves further towards Jose Padilla territory on the hot and humid, tropical-tinged flipside "Tagomago", whose combination of live instrumentation and blissful electronics is near perfect.

Review: Globetrotting producer Mark Barrott has been creatively reinvigorated since moving from Uruguay to Ibiza a few years back. Here, the exiled Sheffielder serves up a second helping of Sketches From An Island, once again proving that his Balearic instincts are as sharp as ever. As with the first volume, Barrott focuses on sun-kissed positivity, variously blending head-nodding hip-hop beats, jazzy guitars, dreamy synths, hazy trumpet solos, Jose Padilla influences, Reichian marimba patterns, and a variety of knowing global influences. This is music to soundtrack sunsets, sunrises, lazy afternoons by the pool, and humid evenings supping ice-cold cocktails. In truth, few do it better than Barrott.

Review: International Feel boss Mark Barrott lays down a marker for what to expect from his forthcoming debut album Sketches From An Island with this limited no frills 12" sampler. Listening to the five tracks here, it's clear the much travelled Barrott has settled into life amongst the hills of Ibiza very very nicely as there's a sheen of serenity that ties everything together. Recorded using "weird percussion, some slide guitars and a few borrowed synths," inspiration for the tracks here and indeed the album apparently comes from listening to early mixtapes from Jose Padilla in the pre-Cafe Del Mar times, with Barrott attempting to convey the true spirit of Balearica. It's convincing enough for the Juno review team, we're just off to look into villa prices on Ibiza...

Review: Despite a career in electronic music that stretches right back to the mid 1990s, this album marks the first time that International Feel boss Mark Barrott has released music under his own name. That's a surprise, but then the whole project - quickly recorded and mixed during a period spent living in Ibiza - has a delightfully spontaneous feel about it. Exotic, humid, atmospheric and richly immersive, Sketches From An Island sees Barrott in full on Balearic mode, laying down a series of instrumental soundscapes variously influenced by Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, Peter Green and the Orb. It's pretty darn good, too, sounding like a sassier, more cultured version of his 2007 Future Loop Foundation set Memories From A Fading Room.

Review: More quality Balearic goodness on offer from International Feel and its label owner Mark Barrott on the third edition of his Sketches From An Island series. Tropical vibes abound on this release. The feelgood, seventies summertime groove of "Right 4 Me" kicks things off nicely. "The Mysterious Island of Doctor Nimm" sets the scene for an Indiana Jones style scene with its epic soundtrack style. On the other side is "Cirrus & Cumulus" with its steel drums and birdcalls hypnotising you into bliss until that sweet synth solo comes creeping in. Lastly "Der Stern, Die Nie Vergeht" channels the the spirit of Ennio Morricone.

Review: According to International Feel boss Mark Barrott, Music For Presence is an attempt to broaden the evocative, downtempo sound he's been pursuing for the last few years. There's certainly a wider palette of influences on show, with opener "Shopenhauer's Garden" adding fluid synth solos to a backing track that doffs a cap to 1970s German synthesizer greats such as Tangerine Dream. The humid and sticky ambience of "Emile" sounds like Finis Africae jamming with Steve Hillage, while "Mokusho" blends cascading, life-affirming synthesizer motifs with spaced-out electronic beats and glistening chords. Closer "Lysander", with its bubbly electronics, cascading trumpet and impeccable piano work, could have come from the studio of Music From Memory regulars Gaussian Curve.

Review: Having spent the last couple of years producing music for other people, International Feel main man Mark Barrott is keen to showcase some new music of his own. The tracks featured on Travelling Music were recorded in the summer of 2020, though this is the first time he's shared them with the public outside of his decidedly Balearic DJ sets. The title track - and its bubbly, sun-bright and utterly gorgeous 'Reprise' mix sibling - is loved-up and sun-soaked in the extreme, with Barrott layering lapping waves of Tangerine Dream style synth lines, kaleidoscopic counter-melodies and hypnotic, trance-inducing drums. Elsewhere, 'Chillin' 4 Work' is the Gentle People jamming with B12 and Vangelis after a fistful of happy pills, while 'Arcade Scene' is Italo-tinged analogue nu-disco.

Review: Blissful Balearic brimmers from the artist known only as Basso, whose longstanding efforts as a record collector, label head, storyteller and all-round obsessive all pay off with this latest record via International Feel. Keeping the curation short and sweet, Sitting In Trees is an eight-track rendezvous to the Island; it follows, in a well-timed fashion, on the hot heels of his very own label Growing Bin, whose releasing of music in this vein knows few bounds and is by now probably more than overflowing. Sifting through the reams of dusty but still golden trance tapes, private presses and smooth jazz obscurios to find the cuts - by Peak Of Normal, Patrick Jahn, Erobique et al - to make up this short but sweet LP's worth.

Review: Killer South African disco inclusion from the International Feel label backed with a remix from Todd 'will his golden patch ever end ?' Terje! The story behind the label's latest deviation from people's expectations goes that Bepu N'Gali's glorious afro disco posse cut "I Travel To You" was passed on during a vinyl shopping expedition in Buenos Aires by a fellow British digger who'd been handed a tape from N'Gali himself on a previous pitstop in Botswana. As with all International Feel releases the music matches the story that precedes it with N'Gali and some 12 musicians combining to deliver the finest example of South African musicianship since the Shangaan Electro comp. Terje brings his inimitable dubbed out disco magic to proceedings on the flip and there's an accompanying twelve due with further dub versions due in the near future too!

Emozioni Miste (5:10)
Review: Retro Balearic sounds delivered as tastefully as only an International Feel Record can. A collaboration between Frankfurt virtuoso Phillip Lauer and Berlin's Fabrizio Mammarella of Slow Motion. Their studio prowess is so impressive, you'd have thought this was a lost tape from 1989 that's just resurfaced. "Hype Around" is reminiscent of 808 State, its summery and anthemic and a classic take on the first wave techno sound while "Spumatix" is the kind of track you could imagine playing while Axel Foley snoops on the bad guys in Beverley Hills Cop. On the flip is the title track, it's just has that unmistakeable Lauer sound all over it, like all his Tuff City kids stuff. Finally "Emozioni Miste" gets back on that 80's soundtrack vibe using that classic xylophone preset accompanying one seriously funky synth bass.

Review: Just over a year ago Phil Lauer teamed up with Fab Mammarella for the Italo-German disco delights of Black Spuma with Mark Barrott's International Feel label a perfect home for their debut transmission together. Thankfully it was no one-off as Intl Feel find some room in a busy 2016 schedule for some fresh Black Spuma produce from the pair with this Onda four-tracker. Fans of crystalline, glistening house music will be in raptures when they hear lead cut "Metallo Nero" which brings to mind Max D's LARJ classic "Polo (Extended Version)", albeit doused in Balearic dust. From here the duo gently amble through mid-tempo Wally Badarou does Beat Down Acid on "Hundred Fingers Man," before a notable upturn in tempo for the effervescent house bliss of the title track. To close, Black Spuma introduce some breakbeats into the mix for the delicious off-kilter "Gabula" which should appeal to fans of Hashman Deejay.

It's So Exciting (High Jingo Love Love rework) (7:20)
Review: The deliciously named duo Boys From Patagonia step forwards as the latest additions to International Feel's roster of pan-continental contemporary balearica with the sublimely sounding Rimini '80. The cousinly duo of Davide Armour & Philippe Mascerano form Boys From Patagonia, bonded by blood, a love of vintage synthesisers and vaguely cheesy Italian pop from the past - with Mascerano's home base in Patagonia influencing their moniker. The title track "Rimini '80" sits proudly alongside Lindstrom's finest moments as a producer, deftly aligning a strident mid tempo beat with all manner of glowering synth manipulation which sounds undeniably authentic in its approximation of a summer's night on the floor of a Rimini hotspot. On the flip, "It's So Exciting" (High Jingo Love Love rework) adopts a slower, digital beat which clearly gets the female vocalist a bit hot under the collar.

Review: This marks Dan Keeling's sixth release under his Bubble Club moniker, a project that indulged his love of production after returning to a series of Ron Hardy Mixtapes, resulting in the creation of some spectacular music. "In Consequence Of A Wish" features layered strings and space-landing textures that continually overlap, while the gentle singing of wishful synthesisers pleads with the beat. "Seven Hills" has a night time feel, as trance-like house pads knock holes through shimmering soundscapes that reverberate into the dusky sky. "Ex-Voto" is a return to the opening track; crying guitars are bent into mournful self-pity, tinged with a hint of optimism, like the ending of a great journey from which you'll take memories that will last forever.

Review: International Feel's recently launched mini album series continues, with long-serving downtempo producer CFCF delivering his vision of a lazy Balearic holiday. Sitting somewhere between Jose Padilla, Joan Bibiloni, and Gigi Masin's collaborations with Templehof, the extended player's eight tracks bristle with authentic live instrumentation, most notably jazzy guitars, soft-focus acoustics, reflective pianos and humid accordions. These are effortlessly blended with subtle electronics to create sun-kissed, early morning mood pieces that undoubtedly define the Balearic, after-hours experience. What's most striking about On Vacation, though, is just how beautiful it is. At times, it's breathtakingly stunning.

Consisting of Stockholm-based musicians Gabriella Borbely (aka Bella Boo) and Jens Resch (Chords), their musical project is said to have begun on a beach in Southern California - and you can certainly hear that influence on the tracks featured on the Save Us EP. The title track featuring vocalist Mapei is a low-slung serving of balearic pop that altogether makes for the perfect summertime groove. And what an album to come back with - Charlie Charlie is the work of Gabriella Borbely, alias Bella Boo, and Jens Resch, better known as Chords. They hail from Stockholm but dreamt this one up in Southern California. And so the music is steeped in hippie sounds, counter culture dreams and beauty pop that transports you to that world immediately. Dreamy and beautiful tracks come thing and fast from the downtempo sounds of 'Nothing Here But You & Me' to innocent Balearic ditties like 'Save Us.'

We Start Over (Apiento & LX remix) (8:17)
Review: The first of two International Feel 12" releases from Steve 'Fila Brazilia' Cobby and vocalist Trudie Dawn Smith continues the label's peerless run of pushing the odder strains of disco in 2015. Cobby's role as part of Fila Brazilia on the development of UK electronics shouldn't be understated, and he's really found a recent creative streak with his solo productions - see last year's fine Everling album issued through his Declasse label. The original version of "We Start Over" finds Cobby taking a back seat, laying down a wonderfully understated arrangement for Dawn Smith's gorgeous vocal to shine over. Complementing this, Testpressing type Apiento teams up with Lexx for a remix that ups the chug factor markedly.

Review: First up, you really need to check the original version of "We Start Over" from Fila Brazilia man Steve Cobby that International Feel also issued on 12" this week as it's a wonderful piece of music that really highlights Trudie Dawn Smith's beautiful vocals. Here Gerd Janson and Phil Lauer go to town on the track twice under their Tuff City Kids alias, offering up a pair of diverse remixes that are aimed for the club spaces. The Private Acid remix lives up to its name with the German pair treating that vocal to some excellent looping tactics whilst the Garage Dub sees them call on the spirit of classic New York house.

Review: This marks the debut of Double Knots. You may not recognise the name, but you already know the constituents: Toby Tobias and Daniel Mode. Setting out with the simple premise to make music that tickles your head as much as your feet, the pair have struck sonic gold. "Remote Control Memory" is a bubbling groove infinity pool that stares out to a sun that never quite sets, "Double Vision" is slightly more upbeat with more of a dancefloor twist that's not dissimilar to Prins Thomas's early work while "Vital Connection" flies us off into the very top of earth's atmosphere on a sumptuous bed of synths and percussive elements. Beautifully blurry.

Do What You Do
Review: International Feel enjoyed a big first twelve months, and they look set to continue this fine fettle of releases deep into 2011 with a whole host of goodies planned (Erol Alkan reworking Harvey for example) The label begins the new year with the welcome return of their occasional E Feel edit series and as usual, there's little in the way of information about their fourth mysterious release, just a track title: "Do What You Do". Musically, it's another eyes-wide-shut Balearic gem - a deliciously mid 1980s chunk of E'd-up pomposity that's sure to set a few spines tingling over the next few months. The beauty lies in its combination of charming synth pop melodies, druggy Italo bass and a heady, Ibiza-centric vocal ("let's keep living in this fantasy" etc). Throw in a deliciously unnecessary guitar solo and a brilliant breakdown, and you've got yourself a winner.

Review: International Feel kicks off what is presumably a new series given its title, Mediterranean Dreams - Part 1. For it, they turn to Perugia synth obsessive, underground mainstay and fine producer Feel Fly for four tracks of breezy and sunny disco-house chuggers. 'Onironauta' brings retro Italo chords and nice chunky drums, 'Grace In Space' is a leggy cosmic wonder with far-sighted chords and muted acid magic, then 'Mediterranean Dreams' is pure 80s dream house bliss. 'Becalmed' is the most rough edged and analogue house jack track of the lot.

Review: Italian DJ and producer and Afrotemplum co-founder, Feel Fly, revisits the sunned, balearic mood of his childhood on this early-stage career definer of an EP. As a series, 'Mediterranean Dreams' lets the light in on only the haziest of sonic visions, letting in island stenches and coconut skitters between the palms. Everything from dub, ambient, balearic and kraut is here channelled into a realised smattering of deep trance, tittilating the senses with an echoic foray into navel-gazing reverie.

Infinite Ways (feat All Dom Wrong)
Road Music
The Reason (feat Lara Smiles)
Review: Given his prior output for Leng, Internasjonal, Redux, Under the Shade, Nang, and Bearfunk, Fernando Pulichino is a near perfect fit for Mark Barrott's International Feel label. The Argentinean musician and producer is on truly effervescent form with the tree tracks here, laying down a gripping bassline for opener "Infinite Ways" that would make Sir Weatherall a shade of green with envy. That loose, dubby cut is made all the more distinctive by the vocals from Dom Wrong that hang over Fernando's production, whilst "The Reason" featuring Lara Smiles will appeal to the more laid back selectors. Sandwiched inbetween is instrumental disco cut "Road Music" which may just be our favourite Fernando track in some time.

Room '96 (recorded live at Room Nightclub, Hull) (8:32)
Review: The legendary deep house duo Fila Brazilia return with another retrospective four-track, following last year's Mermaids' reissue. Steel Tiger Records founder Steve Cobby and lecturer David McSherry ha da whirlwind romance with the house scene, one they reignited in 2020 after a 16-year separation. 'Subtle Body' serves as an incredible reintroduction to the dynamic duos sound, tripped-out dubby beats and raw house sessions, with the title track's layered chimes, looped delay feedback and floaty chords blasting right out of the gate. What follows is an unreleased instrumental version of 'Nightfall' from the 2002 album 'Jump Leads', an industrial ambient drifter.

On Side B, the tempo and temperature rises, and we're treated to 'The Light Of Jesus', from the debut LP 'Old Codes: New Chaos'. A bumping house groove, smooth organ and sweet bass combine for an unforgettable track that has stood the test of time fiercely. The EP rounds out with 'Room '96', a live house jam from Hull's Room nightclub - a time capsule to better days. The songs here on Subtle Body might be a window into a time long past, but they remain in the present: and as long as bodies seek pleasure, and dancers want to keep going til sunrise, Fila Brazillia will endure, and soundtrack those moments for us all to get lost in.

Life's A Dancer
Tempo Of The Night
Review: Forever the horizontally inclined innovators, International Feel introduce a mild curveball in their direction with Flights of Fancy, a new series showcasing what Balearic should sound like - through the custom made Ear Dimension Filters they employ on the coastline of Punta Del Este of course. The identity of those behind Flights of Fancy remains a mystery, as does so much with International Feel, but regardless both tracks present adopt a vintage discofied aesthetic that will find a place in many a heart. "Love's A Dancer" comes across like a forgotten Moroder gem given the Noid recordings treatment, whilst the altogether more widescreen vision of Balearica that is "Tempo Of The Night" positively glides towards the runout groove.

Review: The album format suits some artists more than others. On this evidence, it's a snug fit for producer Ben Williams' Gatto Fritto project. Like his previous exemplary 12" singles for Dissident, Electric Minds and International Feel, this self-titled debut album quietly tiptoes between claustrophobic paranoia and dream-like bliss - on some occasions even within the same track (the calming and uneasy "Solar Flares Burn You"). These central themes underpin a beautiful and occasionally unsettling mix of tracks that draws on everything from Radiophgonic Workshop synth-experimentation, classic Balearica and evocative ambience to smacked-out pop (see "The Curse" and "Lucifer Morning Star"), evocative ambience and groggy new wave disco.

Review: Following his limited edition tape debut on SFV, Scott Gilmore makes an even deeper mark on the mighty International Feel. Once again a blurred collage is revealed where references to library music, kosmiche and psychedelia all play key roles in his unique music narrative; his more hands-on experimental rock side is subtly shown on "Flight Through Grey" while clear parallels are made with Gainsbourg on the title track and other moments such as the touching closer "Walking Underground". Elsewhere we're dazzled by Balearica on "E70 No 01" and blindsided by ambient introspection on "Lady Street Racer". Beautiful, heavily layered and continually revealing more; this is an immaculate piece of work from all concerned.

Review: Long-standing Japanese house ambassador Gonno return to the mighty International Feel family. And he's done so with three full-flavoured creative departures: "Obscurant" is like standing under a powerful waterfall. Refreshing, stimulating but dangerously strong that you may well lose your footing. "A Life With Clarinet", meanwhile, is a firing breakbeat jazz number that sits somewhere between S.P.Y and Bonobo. Finally Houndstooth's Call Super calms us down with a deep, dubby tech twist on "Obscurant" that switches the original's howling gales to a misty sea breeze.

Turn The Light

Acdise #2 (Gatto Fritto remix)
Review: International Feel adds Japanese techno artist Gonno to its roster, with Skudge and Gatto Fritto employed on remix duties. The label has released material from artists such as Gatto Fritto, Rocha, Bubble Club and DJ Harvey, and, due to the nature of its strongly curated sound, has subsequently gained a reputation as something of a Balearic label. And, in true Balearic form, the imprint has decided to take a left turn and welcome aboard Japanese techno producer Gonno, who counts Josh Wink and Laurent Garnier among his unofficial fan club. The release was suggested by Gatto Fritto (a long time techno fetishist), and the release is actually a collaboration between Gatto Fritto's label Fritto Morto and International Feel, with a new catalogue number to seal the deal. The two original cuts - namely "Acdise #2" and "Turn The Light" - appear on the A-Side, with the cosmic, swirling arpeggios of the former complementing the ambient atmospherics of the latter. Swedish techno dons Skudge turn in a throbbing late night revision of "Acdise #2" while Fritto's own remix is perhaps the highlight, with a deeply cerebral interpretation that might just be one of the finest moments in the International Feel canon. Limited, 180g vinyl here too.
