Devil The Difference EP

Disco/Nu-Disco
Devil The Difference (5:32)
Boogie With Billy (5:40)
Devil The Difference (future dub) (5:22)
Review: Ever since their first releases on 20:20 Vision back in 2005, Art Of Tones have steadily grown into purveyors of fine deep house, and you can rest assured that you'll always receive nothing but quality from them. As of late, they've been more closely associated to London's House Of Disco Records, an imprint onto which they return to herein with three smackers, starting with the disco-laced groove that is "Devil The Difference", a soulful house joint with nothing but vibes spilling from every corner. On the flip, "Boogie With Billy" adopts a similar formula to a more electronic rhythm that recalls material from the mighty 80's imprint SAM, while the 'future dub' of "Devil The Difference" twists the original into a deeper, more heady cut for the deep hours...

Art Of Tones - "Unlimited Love" (7:38)
Art Of Tones - "Steppin In & Out" (5:24)
Harry Wolfman - "Eroticity" (6:12)
Harry Wolfman - "Schoolin" (7:57)
Review: It's something of a pleasant surprise to see French veteran Ludovic Llorca popping up on the second volume of House of Disco's HODSTASH edits series. Under his Art of Tones alias, the one-time F Communications stalwart turns in a couple of house-friendly cut-ups of classic tracks. "Unlimited Love", for example, offers a head-nodding, toe-tapping rework of Love Unlimited Orchestra's slow dance classic "Love's Theme", while "Stepping In & Out" successfully chops and tools up a similarly familiar disco classic. House of Disco regular Harry Wolfman continues the theme on the flip, delivering a banging version of Prince classic "Erotic City", before closing proceedings with the sweaty P-Funk-goes-tech house chug of "Schoolin".

Park Talk EP

Disco/Nu-Disco
Seratona (7:26)
Park Talk (7:19)
Gorlami (6:54)
Park Talk (Johannes Albert party Talk remix) (6:42)
Review: House of Disco throw open their doors to Boots & Kats for a jolly good time across three originals and a remix from German house artist Johannes Albert. His version of 'Party Talk' sure is a fine one, with colourful arps and pixelated leads all vying for your attention of driving drums. 'Seratona' is a retro-future disco stomper to open with and 'Park Talk' is a manic disco-house workout that will leave you breathless. 'Gorlami' is a glistening melodic explosion that surges through the cosmos on a wave of positivity. These are the sort of good time grooves that we all need right now.

Sharks Lies & Videotape (6:58)
Habibi Dub (Lauer remix) (6:34)
Joe Armstrong Theme (6:07)
Habibi Dub (Mix & Fairbanks remix) (6:23)
Review: For the last eight years COEO has successfully built a reputation via EPs on Toy Tonics, Let's Play House and Razor-N-Tape reserve that gleefully blur the boundaries between deep house and nu-disco. Here the Munich-based duo appears on House Of Disco for the very first time. The headline attraction is undoubtedly "Habibi Dub", a wonderfully cheery, melodic and up-tempo affair full of stylistic nods to 1980s Euro-disco and NYC freestyle (Fairlight stabs, bubbly Bobby Orlando bass, chiming synthesizer riffs, delay-laden drums etc). You'll find two rather good remixes of the track tucked away on side B, too. There's a sparkling, rush-inducing take from Phillip Lauer that throws Balearic house pianos into the mix, as well as a Mix & Fairbanks rework that adds a little tropical flavour.

Alpha Bravo (8:04)
Itomata (7:16)
Oderberger (5:41)
Agony (feat Smokin' Jones) (7:17)
Review: The next one by ascendant Londoner Cody Currie comes courtesy of House Of Disco, home to great releases by artists such as Hot Toddy, Harry Wolfman and Aroop Roy. Some smokin' nu-wave antics are expressed on the terrific Italo influenced "Alpha Bravo" which opens up the A side. On the flip, he gets seriously lo-slung on the deep down and dirty funk of "Oderberger", followed by the smoky, Rhodes-led deepness of "Agony" (feat Smokin' Jones) which is perfect for getting down late at night.

Key Lime (5:28)
Key Lime (Patchworks remix) (5:59)
Key Lime (Ron Basejam remix) (7:22)
Key Lime (COEO remix) (6:02)
Review: House of Disco's latest essential missive comes from D'Arabia, a Bologna-based producer with one 12" to his name (2016's Red Rooster E.P on the label of the same name). "Key Lime" sounds like a life-affirming peak-time anthem in the making, featuring a snaking saxophone solo floating above "Get A Move On" style drums and a fantastically heavy bass guitar riff. The fine remix package is headed up by organic deep house veteran Patchworks, who gives the track a suitably warm and jazzy fix-up, and Crazy P man Ron Basejam, whose tasty revision predictably moves further towards jazz-funk/deep disco fusion. If you're in the mood for a more musically expansive but bumping interpretation, COEO's take is the one to check.

Baby (original)
Baby (Monitor 66 remix)
Baby (Ron Basejam remix)
Baby (Debonair remix)
Review: Norwegian producer Finnebassen gives London label House Of Disco Records its eighth 12". In parts, the title track "Baby" sounds like Timbaaland snuck in the studio after a slow-mo-ish Finnebassen production session to add his trademarked telephone EQ'd ugh vocal. House Of Disco Records staple Monitor 66 supplies a slightly Daft Punk remix to the EP, which in parts, paints metal imagery of Ed Banger act Breakbot dancing on glass. Ron Basejam gets all Stevie Wonder up in his remix, while Debonair pushes things a little deeper with dubby synths that are brought back to life by a minimalist Michael Bolton sax similar to Cut Copy's "Hearts On Fire".

Freebooter (5:43)
Orchard (6:11)
Orchard (Snacks remix) (6:53)
Review: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The House Of Disco, come in and make yourselves comfortable. What began life as a blog and party has now become fully established as a record label, as THOD arrive at release number 14 with Dutch pair Daniel Leseman and Hans Peeman at the helm under their FOUK name. The Gruff EP comes after two well received FOUK Eps last year and fits snugly into The House Of Disco aesthetic, brandishing a trio of disco house pumpers that all retain that loose and live feel to them. Push us for a favourite and we'd probably plump for the filtered pump of the curiously named "Freebooter". Complementing these are remixes from Ron Basejam and Snacks of the title track, with the rasping groove of the latter a delight.

Release The Kraken EP

Deep House
Release The Kraken (feat Thumpasaurus) (4:56)
Night Shift (5:52)
Gloriole (5:37)
Arrakis (5:33)
Review: Following hot on the heels of their fine "Truffles EP" on Heist, Fouk pops up on House Of Disco with another distinctive collection of sample-rich fusions of house, disco, boogie and P-funk. The Dutch duo sets the tone superbly via colourful opener "Release The Kraken", where Plantlife style vocals from Thumpasaurus rise above vibrant synths, thickset boogie bass and sweaty house drums. "Night Shift" is a synth-bass propelled dusty deep house roller - think tasty Rhodes stabs, sampled party atmosphere and loose but groovy drums, while "Gloriole" is an acid-flecked chunk of quirky house goodness. To round things off, they wrap more colourful P-funk synths around a dense, live-sounding rhythm on the bass-heavy deep house warmth of "Arrakis".

Still We Are EP
Cat: HOD 027. Rel: 21 Jul 20

Deep House
Synthesize (7:31)
Wilde Touch (7:10)
Still We Are (7:00)
Positive Emotion (feat Danielle Moore) (5:26)
Review: Three years on from his latest solo outing, Crazy P founder member Chris Todd AKA Hot Toddy returns to House of Disco with a predictably fine four-tracker. Our pick of a very strong bunch is the toughened up, revivalist electrofunk flex of "Wilde Touch", where clipped guitar riffs, crunchy Clavinet lines and colourful melodies ride a rubbery bassline, though the Paper Recordings-era Crazy P deep house/disco fusion of "Still We Are" is almost as impressive. Speaking of Crazy P, lead singer Danielle Moore lends her distinctive vocals to the Imagination-ish Brit-boogie business of "Positive Emotion", while the EP's other track, opener "Synthesize", is a darker and more spaced-out chunk of weighty, bassline-driven nu-boogie goodness.

Disco/Nu-Disco
In The Genes (8:07)
Love Music (6:35)
Love Can Set You Free (6:20)
Review: Long-serving disco-house fusionist Hot Toddy (AKA Crazy P co-founder Chris Todd) is in a loved-up mood on this rather tasty three-tracker. Surprisingly, it's his first solo single for some five years, and his first for House of Disco. It's the breezy, funk-fuelled A-side "In The Genes", in which Todd expertly fuses together elements most often found in proto-house, NYC boogie, early house and disco-funk records, that stands out, though the standard naturally remains high elsewhere. "Love Music", for example, is a wonderfully sauced-eyed stroll through dreamy deep house/disco fusion, while closer "Love Can Set You Free" sits somewhere between stripped-back disco-house, percussive boogie and Idjut Boys style dub disco.

Mix & Fairbanks - "Shergar's Revenge" (5:58)
Shee - "Me, You, Us" (6:53)
Purple Ice - "Adeus" (7:02)
Review: According to the hype sheet we have to hand, the "Home Turf EP" is House of Disco's first multi-artist extravaganza for two years. There's plenty to get the juices flowing throughout, from the bounding bounciness of LPM's rap-sampling disco-house cut "Get With It", to the impeccably warm and sun-kissed jazz-house vibes of Purple Ice's "Adeus". In between you'll find the rolling, synth-heavy warmth of Mix & Fairbanks' deliciously loved-up "Shergar's Revenge" and "Me, You, Us" by Shee, a chunky sample-house number full of swirling strings, looped guitar riffs, hazy chords and righteous spoken word samples.

Triscuits (original mix)
Triscuits (PBR Streetgang mix)
Triscuits (The Dead Rose Music Company remix)
Triscuits (Roberto Rodriguez remix)
Review: House of Disco continue their maturity from blog into fully fledged label, with their sixth release since expanding operations the most ambitious thus far. Firstly, it's the debut single from Swedish trio Monitor 66 whose "Triscuits" is a wondrous slice of ethereal disco, the thick low end complemented by some delightfully liquid melodic touches and some crafty manipulation of a Keith Sweat track. The standard of commissioned remixers also demonstrates House Of Disco are doing it right, with PBR Streetgang, Robert Rodriguez and Dead Rose Music Company all present and correct here. It's the latter who perhaps impresses the most, craftily retaining elements of Monitor 66's ethereal approach but rewiring the track to a sound more appropriate for sweat filled basements.

Night Moves
Review: Having previously made his name as a purveyor of filter-heavy electrofunk re-edits for such labels as Disco Deviance, Tribute and Bedmo Disco, Aussie Rocco Raimundo has now set his sights on taking the step into original production. Here, he offers up an excellent EP of original - if sample-heavy - material for House of Disco. Like previous HOD outings, there's a reliance on touchy-feely '80s soul and electrofunk sounds, cut-up vocals and sumptuous deep house grooves. With plenty of added delay and his usual impeccable filters, there's much to enjoy, from the familiar synth-disco bump of "Keep On Keepin On", to the eyes-wide-shut gorgeousness of "Night Moves".

Talkin Bout Life (Brisa remix) (4:26)
Review: Aroop Roy is a producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist from the UK. Be prepared for one well funky and soul infused journey on "Talkin Bout Life" which is perfect to bring in the summer of 2017. Funky elements, a serious horns section and strong vocals hold up this brilliant track. It's a more straight ahead deep house affair on the rather evocative "We Together" and actually its the kind of track you could imagine Derrick May or Dixon playing out; there are definitely elements of 'hi-tech soul' in it. The Brisa remix of Talkin Bout Life" on the flip is a worthy addition also.

Satin Jackets - "Dee Baby"

Ejeca - "Natal"
Review: Is Baby D's "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" a guilty pleasure or just a good old fashioned rave classic? Either way, it's presented in beautiful form here by Satin Jackets who've pitched it down and weaved in various layers of deep house and cosmic disco. Smooth, sexy and respectful, we'd call that a classic any day of the week. Ejeca's "Natal", meanwhile, takes a Hooj golden oldie - Three Drives' "Greece 2000" - gives it a ruthless stripping and pushes into a deep pool of slo-mo beauty.

Funk, Nah (6:07)
Review: Killarney's David Sheerin makes a strong step into the spotlight with this 12" on House Of Disco, which finds him rounding out his musical identity with some seriously slick house cuts. "Our Love" is a smooth and bubbling track underpinned by some tidy acid and peppered with vocals on top, while "Forgotten" rides a dusty groove and hazy chords for a lazy summer treat. "Jiraya" takes things higher with strafing arpeggios orbiting a steadfast groove, and then "Funk, Nah" drops some big room dynamics to seal the deal on this sturdy breakthrough EP.

Review: Snacks last appeared on Magic Jams back in 2014, and it's with absolute joy that we welcome back the artist's music onto our charts via this new single for House Of Disco Records. Sweet, sunset vibes emanate from every angle of "Burnin'", and "Matinee" follows suit with a funky little stepper complete with roaring bass and glorious vocal samples from the disco era. The flipside features "Deep Fry", a string-heavy, glitter-bomb nugget, which is accompanied by a deeper, more house-laden Fouk remix. Yes.

Review: Vinyl only edits sub label of House Of Disco returns, with its fourth edition in the series. A very funky and lo-slung sounding rendition of Arthur Russell (perhaps) on the groovy "Can I Get Witcha" by Snacks, newcomer SDWTRX delivers the sleazy yet smooth "Midnight Run" and label mainstay Harry Wolfman also appears - he is fresh off a great one on Outplay and serves up the dreamy and sun kissed bliss of "Nino".

Review: There is unbridled joy and musical richness in this spirit-raising new EP from Sound Support. As we've just learnt that summer 2021 is on, we're all imagining ourselves on outside dance floors, moving and grooving under a hot sun and through a balmy might, and these are the tracks we we want hear. 'Clavi on the Rocks' is all squelchy bass and cosmic keys over mid tempo beats, 'Thesaurus Rex' is grown up Balearic for those cocktail moments and 'Super Elevation' then heads into more nocturnal territory with its stiffer basslines and more acidic synths. 'Enduro' close sin playful and care free fashion.
