Review: It's all about the cover version of Stevie Wonders anthem on the flip from this Japanese based latin centric outfit. Killer !Alien Liberty International may not be that well known this side of the World, but the expansive Latin combo have been releasing sizzling music -mostly on CD, for some reason - in their native Japan for the last couple of years. Here they make their long-awaited vinyl debut with a sizzling slab of authentic 1960s Harlem boogaloo full of infectious rhythms, rousing horns and vocals that may inspire sing-alongs if dropped at the right time. Equally as impressive is their flipside instrumental cover of Stevie Wonder classic 'Pastime Paradise', which brilliantly re-imagines the song as Latin jazz-funk gem complete with flanged guitars, a rousing horn section, a brilliant percussion-only breakdown and duelling flute and sax solos, both of which do a great job replicating the original's vocal melody.

Review: An iconic electro boogie / go-hop party jam from 1981, everything about AM FM's delivery on their debut single screams funk perfection; the big synth splashes, the sprightly keytar, the super-juiced basslines and the belting vocals all fuse in such harmony it still dazzles over 35 years later. Here we're treated to two subtly crafted versions from maestro Muro as the vocals take predominance on side A while side B is all about the immense instrumental which breaks down to its bare breaks before building back up again with pure party panache. Timeless.

Review: Contemporary Hammond B3 maestro Booker Gee (real name Guillaume Metenier) has delivered some seriously good slabs over the last couple of years, and this wholehearted tribute to the JB's could well be the best of the lot. 'Popcorn' is a sparse but seriously heavy deep funk cut, with Metenier's inspired Hammond licks and solos riding a sweaty, break-fuelled groove courtesy of acclaimed modern funk multi-instrumentalist Slikk Tim. Over on the flip, the French musician and producer gives his interpretation of Sound Dimension's 'Granny Snatch', delivering a cosmic funk take full of weighty bass, flanged guitars, jazzy solos and deliciously dubbed-out sounds. It's not quite as instantly accessible as 'Popcorn', but it is certainly equally as potent.

Review: Curiously, jazz singer turned disco diva Dee Dee Bridgewater's debut album, 1974's "Afro Blue", was only ever released in Japan. It's from this set that these two tracks are taken. A-side "Little B's Poem" is a superb slab of soul-jazz brilliance that sits somewhere between Nina Simone, Billie Holliday and the kind of sun-kissed, life-affirming classic jazz that was once all the rage in underground jazz clubs. Over on side B you'll find Bridgewater's version of "People Make The World Go Round", with her impeccable vocal rising above fluid pianos, brushed drums and snaking trumpet solos.

Review: Yuji Ohno's cult fusion project from 75 enjoys its first every vinyl reissue for Record Store Day. Still frazzling senses with its balance of frenzied synthesis and smooth jazz arrangements, this would have blown entire minds 42 years ago. "The Heated Point" has a lounge feel to the bedrock as electrified melodies rifle and rattle with a literal buzz while "The Ironside" flickers from moment to moment, each held together with soaking wet Korg sounds and gliding slide guitars. Unique and a helluva lot of fun, there's no mistaking why original presses have passed hands for over a tonne.

Review: Late, great Japanese funk don Takehiro Honda's vaults get the treatment from HMV as two of his many famously fizzy jams enjoy a new lease of life. 1971's "Ain't It Funky Now" should be familiar by all as it subverts the good work of the greatest band leader of all time with mild jazz and funk fusion. "Greasy Spoon" on the B can be found a few years deeper into Takehiro's discography as part of his 1973 album "What's Going On". Another supreme, lucid fusion cut; not only does it still kick up a fuss on the dancefloor, it also salutes the best cooked breakfasts on the planet. Not to be slept on.
