Review: Solar One co-founder Robert Witschakowski has spent much of the past few years delivering "re-wired electro" as The Exaltics. Here, he changes tack, joining forces with fellow Solar One co-founder Nico Jagiella to re-launch the Crotaphytus project last seen back in 2010. Acanthosaura blends material inspired by the duo's love of soundtracks - think dark, moody ambience smothered in humid field recordings and the paranoid crackle of short wave radio - with similarly creepy electro, acid-tinged new wave chuggers, and trippy, experimental soundscapes. It's hardly a barrel of laughs, as you might expect, but it's certainly engaging, hugely enjoyable, and immaculately produced.

Sea Level (Haze mix)
Sea Level (Aerosol mix)
Review: The Further imprint adds Irish producer John Daly to its already excellent roll call of releases with Sea Level, a two track twelve that comes housed in the kind of typically eye catching sleeve design we've come to expect from the Seattle label. Held within are two variants on "Sea Level" by Daly, both recorded live to tape with the A Side "Haze Mix" an appropriately subaqueous excursion through house that showcases his talent for composition across 21 expansive minutes as opposed to being a track you'd slip out to add some bump to the floor. Those wanting something more along those lines will of course find plenty of rhythmic thrust in the accompanying "Aerosol Remix". Highly recommended.

Review: Few can top Pat Murano in the prolific stakes when it comes to his output as Decimus with a weighty 18 albums released under the name for Further, Opal Tapes, Digitalis and his own Kelippah since 2011! After releasing Decimus 10 on Further back in 2013, Murano now returns to the label with Decimus 7, the latest installment in his proposed series of twelve long players dedicated to the zodiac of Decimus Magnus Ausonious. Like the previous editions in this series, Decimus 7 consists of two continuous long form tracks with the overall sound landing snugly within the abrasive abstraction that Murano has built his name on.

Review: It's not been that long that Pat Murano of The No-Neck Blues Band has been indulging in his Decimus project, with releases just dating back to 2011. However in that time a wealth of material has emerged, and in his detailed and organic approach Murano demonstrates the more diverse, delicate side of noise production. Bringing his Decimus series to Further Records, he firsts treats us to a simmering cauldron of foreboding that seems to summon pagan incantations from a great distance while a dishevelled pulse ticks away over moaning and ever-so quiet bass. On the second track, there is less thrust to the collage and a more free-flowing spirit takes hold, solemn guitar notes suspended alongside dismembered voices and echo chamber pops and spits rumbling away underneath.

Review: ** Repress ** Donato Dozzy is spoken about in hushed tones by anyone worth their techno salt. On the K LP he shows us why: across seven unnamed tracks the Italian producer takes us on a journey that at times is calming and ambient; at others hazy and atmospheric. Few producers before him can have been so adept at producing richly textured, melodic techno, with the almost deathly slow opening track leading into a truly unique and rewarding listening experience. Importantly, Dozzy never strays too far into esoteric territory a€" this is still palpably techno music. Originally released as a limited edition cassette on Further Records, this double LP is lovingly packaged in screen printed casing. Seriously collectable.

Review: Donato Dozzy's previous album, Sintetizzatrice, made beautiful, avant-garde music out of chopped-up and manipulated vocals. For The Loud Silence, he's attempted to do similar with the "marranzano", better known as the humble mouth harp or Jew's Harp. The instrument's distinctive twang can be heard throughout the album, providing inspiration for trippy, droning ambience ("Personal Rock"), glitchy electronica ("The Net"), abstract techno ("Downhill To The Sea", whose industrial influences are obvious), and triumphant, post-Orbital soundtrack electronica (closer "Exit The Acropolis", which is nothing less than superb). Of course, there are musty textures and off-kilter electronic textures throughout, too, but it's the alien-sounding mouth harp the draws Dozzy's disparate strands together.

Review: Seattle label Further heed the calls and finally reissue K, the debut album from highly decorated Italian producer Donato Dozzy. First released back in 2010 across various formats, K laid down an early marker for Dozzy's capacity to conjure up dubby techno wedged thick with ambience and atmosphere. Across the nine untitled tracks, Dozzy successfully explored a range of styles and tempos - from the dreamy, slo-mo rush of "K4" and wonky soundscape "K6", to the jagged late night acid of "K7" - whilst retaining a druggy, otherworldly feel. Since original vinyl copies will set you back L30 plus, it's pleasing to see the album finally getting a deserved reissue. If you missed out first time around, it comes highly recommended, and is packed with such highlights as the dreamy, slo-mo rush of "K4".

Review: British ambient producer Jimmy Billingham aka HOLOVR has previously flaunted his wares on respected imprints such as Opal Tapes, Firecracker and Indole where he presented the brilliant Line Of Flight LP last year. "Into Light" or "Apparent Motion" could pass for The Orb or even CTI's early ambient electronica experiments, both awash in soothing analogue pads, hypnotic bleeps and faint 303 acid flourishes. On the flip, there's more quality to be found on the cosmic journey "Involution" that's full of vintage analogue synth flair, screeching and squealing all over the place; it's pure bliss.

Review: With this EP on Seattle-based Further Records, Mosam Howieson effortlessly joins the dots between creeping ambience, intergalactic IDM, and the growling intensity of experimental techno. For the most part, it's a becalmed concoction, with "Spiral 3", in particular, showcasing the kind of immersive, quietly dreamy ambience that takes great influence from the mixed-down rhythms and heavy bass of dub techno. "Spiral 4" is, if anything, even more inspired, with bubbling rhythms underpinning Howieson's impeccable chords and subtle melodies. Best of all, though, is "Spiral 7", which is blessed with the kind of intense melancholy that both stirs the emotions and demands repeat listens. Impressive stuff, all told.

Review: For those willing to delve deeply, the experimental cassette scene is full of obscure gems. Under the Human Rays alias, Sweden's Robin Smeds Mattila has been responsible for a number of overlooked tape classics. Here, Further Records has decided to transfer Mattila's undoubted skills to vinyl for the first time. Like much of the producer's work, A Tension blends experimental recording techniques with his usual firm grasp of mood and melody. The result is a quartet of meandering ambient cuts that variously draw on influences from across the beat-less spectrum, from the Berlin School and Brian Eno, to Biosphere and Pete Namlook. Hopefully, this will help introduce Matilla to a whole new audience; his mesmerising music is certainly worthy of wider acclaim.

Review:  With a mind-bending array of releases behind him, largely on cassette, it's not easy to get a firm grip on what Hans Dens' Innercity project is all about, but then that's not necessarily what it's about. In the same spirit of adventure that possesses the likes of Ekoplekz, the music on A Lion Baptism is a chaotic blend of noise and drone studies with a nod to Musique Concrete in the manic and detailed deployment of samples. At times this can reach discernible musical peaks, only to be manhandled by another barrage of sonic grot wielded with a thrilling impulsiveness. The diversity on the release will keep your brain on its toes, touching upon so many different tones and moods across the eight track savagery.

Review: Weaving finds Seattle label Further coaxing a wonderful album of meditative synth and ambient music out of Jo Johnson, who is perhaps best known for her role as a DJ in the London-based Bleep43 collective. Dig a bit deeper and Johnson's musical heritage stretches back to the 90s London indie scene as part of various bands, whilst more recently she's been engaged as part of VLF with fellow Bleep43 member Emile Facey (aka Plant43). This album feels far removed from the electro one might expect from Johnson however. Opening with a homage to Johnson's primary influence Alice Coltrane in "Ancestral Footsteps", Weaving unfolds as one of those albums that welcomes you in from the off and it's all too easy to get lost amidst the luxuriant flourishes and moods that follow.

Review: Mogador is a new project from prolific producer Will Long, who has released a phenomenal amount of music over the years, particularly under the Celer alias. Overflow Pool sees him going back to basics, eschewing post-production trickery in favour of two lengthy pieces created with just an electric piano and reel-to-reel delay. The resultant pieces are strangely magical, featuring slowly unfurling motifs and gradual shifts. That both compositions rank amongst the most atmospheric ambient creations of recent times is remarkable, given the simplicity of the recording set-up, but also testament to Long's immense skill as a musician and producer.

Live In Seattle (17:30)
Review: Two thirds of Magic Mountain High team up on this masterpiece. Its David Moufang aka Move D and Jordan Czamanski aka Jordash on a live performance recorded in Seattle in May 2013. In the words of Further Records: "It was the kind of set during which you say to yourself, "I hope to hell somebody's recording this." Side A provides a highlight of the first half of the set and definitely the most experimental part. Gentle xylophone vibes are soon joined by snarling monosynth leads, transitioning into suspenseful and cinematic soundtrack territory with sombre and immersive pads. It all gels together in a frenzy, fuelled by rusty percussion and swirling synth textures. Side B starts off grumbling away beneath chimes and what sounds like a theremin until gradually the acid begins setting in. The 303 builds to an epic climax over several layers of percussion and rich strings, gradually deconstructing, layer upon layer into delay. You can even hear the rapturous applause from the audience and one ecstatic punter bellow out an "Aww yeeah!"

Review: So far this year, our ears have been treated to a succession of wonderful long players from Further Records by the likes of Rrose, Strategy and Innercity. The coming months promise further treats in this format from the Seattle label with Dozzy and Jonas Reinhardt amongst the planned albums, but Further find space in their schedule for some techno 12"s! First up is Canopee, a three-track 12" from Nautil, a Paris-based newcomer and student of music specialising in "acoustics, signal processing, and informatics". This looks to be Nautil's debut release but you wouldn't think it from the production panache demonstrated throughout with the Parisian channelling Dozzy-levels of hypnotic low frequency, ocean deep techno. The nine minute title track is particularly special.

Review: Having started his musical adventure in the mid-2000s as a maker of atmospheric techno, Manuel "Nuel" Fogliata switched focus in 2011 to deliver a debut album packed with odd downtempo shapes and crackling experimental electronics. This belated follow-up is, if anything, even more unusual, sitting somewhere between creeping drone textures, bleak industrial electronica, otherworldly ambience and dystopian white noise. There is flickering beauty to be found amongst the alien soundscapes - see the grandiose, sharpened drone of "Be Well", and the icy pulse of "Polaris" - but it's largely the more extreme moments that make the album such an intriguing listen.

Review: Nuel aka Manuel Fogliata has been Donato Dozzy's partner in crime on the Aquaplano Sessions project over the last ten years, and he's easily one of Italy's and Europe's greatest when it comes to both hypnotic techno and abstract ambient soundscapes. He's up on America's Further imprint, home to Dozzy's own recent albums, and Hyperboreal is an work of many layers and texture, jumping from rhythmic drone patters such as "Steppin' Stone", to the noisier, more surreal flutters of "Polaris" and onto glacial synth explorations through the title track "Hyperboreal". "The Rest Is Noise" is another work of subtlety and hedonism to bring this sonic whirlpool to a close. Excellent and top of our list.

Archipelago 6 (dub version)
Review: Having impressed the Juno review team back in May with their debut release on London label Uzuri, the fledgling production trio known as Pittsburgh Track Authority arise on a label closer to home in the shaped of established Seattle imprint Further Records. The Archipelago EP arrives in a gaudy hand screen printed sleeve and contains a cluster of analogue heavy deviations through Utopian soundscapes. Opening with "Archipelago 6" the PTA immediately lay down expansive waves of floating pads, allowing layers of bubbling synths and acid lines to grow amidst intuitive rhythms. There's a real charm to how the track is in a constant progressive yet restrained flux, and it attains a whole other level of emotive intent when the sweeping chords arise towards the end. "Archipelago 3" operates on a similarly dream-like level, though the track is notable for the SMD like synth patterns that are allowed centre stage over a bass heavy 808 throb, aided by some gently dubbed piano melodies. The B Side is engulfed by a Dub Version of the opening track which also operates on a nice beatdown tip at 33rpm.

Review: When it comes to a quantity of quality ambient music, the Further label has set itself up to be a major port of call. The Dose LP was the second by co-founder Chloe Harris aka Raica, originally released on tape in 2012, and even though full-lengths on Digitalis and Gretta Cottage Woodpile followed, this still remains one of her best. Synthesised textures and low end pulses mixed with fluttering clusters of busy sound design and effects make Dose a dreamy and at times surreal listen, with tracks like "Harchone" the most challenging. It's album opener "Satmor", "Slep_Non", "Watr Dragn", "Skrt" and the concluding "Entridam" that will appeal most to ambient enthusiasts.

Review: Drum and bass producer turned premiere exponent of gloopy synth experiments Lance Dibblee turns out a new album of Red Math material for the ever excellent Seattle label Further Records. If you indulged in Unhinged, the 2010 Red Math tape for Digitalis then you'll be all over this eleven track set which pays little attention to the concept of beat dynamics, instead favouring a churning array of gurgling analogue bleeps, squeaks and flourishes. "Storm" and the Delia Derbyshire-esque "Space Music" stand out on first listen but this is always going to be an album that you willingly allow to consume your every sense over time.

Having Never Written A Note For Percussion (studio version) (20:16)
Having Never Written A Note For Percussion (live at Dupont Underground) (22:18)
Review: A most interesting undertaking from Seattle's Further Records here, presenting two quite distinct reinterpretations of a composition from US minimalist James Tenney by former Sandwell District artist Rrose. Having Never Written a Note for Percussion was composed by Tenney back in 1971 and is regarded as a gruelling long form piece for a percussionist to perform. Back in 2012, Rrose did a live improvised take on the piece for a performance at Dupont Underground in Washington DC, and a recording of that forms one side of this album from Further. The other is a separate studio recording by Rrose and both extend Tenney's composition beyond its original eight minutes to a collective hour. Whereas the live version seems rife with tension and foreboding, the studio version is more alluring and hypnotic in its steady progression. Further deserve real applause for facilitating this release!

Review: Seattle independent electronic explorers Further return with a much delayed album from Irish producer John Daly under The Smoke Clears name. The Galway-based Daly has been a prolific presence in deep house circles since his emergence back in 2006 on the Feel Music label he co-founded, gracing the likes of Mule Musiq, Drumpoet Community and Francois K's Wave Music with his structured, textural approach to classic house and disco. This new project sees Daly return to Further after an excellent 12" back in 2011 brandishing a markedly more expansive approach with tracks such as the slow burning minimalist acid of "Freefall" or the hazed out title track demonstrating Smoke Clears is an outlet for Daly to explore slower, more immersive tempos.

Review: Having issued albums on Idle Hands and Entr'acte already this year, Portland produce Paul 'Strategy' Dickow lands another full length blow in the shape of Noise Tape Self for Seattle's Further Records. Such is Dickow's mastery as a producer, you always get something different with every Strategy release he puts out and that's the case with Noise Tape Self. Some six tracks long, the album is the end result of Dickow's nascent experiments with making his own tape loops within cassettes and working within that framework on a four-track recorder. Naturally a wonderfully fuzzy hue sits over the album that fully envelops the listener in a warm cloud of soft focus abstraction - "Ominous Lovely Piano" is a particular highlight.

Public Voyeurs (7:16)
Relix (14:04)
Fossil Data (9:16)
Tower Of Babble (8:07)
Review: Sometimes, it just takes a label like the US' excellent Further to release music as gnarly and as daring as Strategy's; the recent LP by Nuel, for instance, is a shining example of the way that these dudes like to do things. "Public Voyeurs" sets in motion a sort of sonic whirlpool made up of grainy drones and rhythmic patters of beatless sound that becomes yet more distorted and wild on "Relix". "Fossil Data" is as molecular and alien as you can possibly get, and it's definitely our favourite moment on here - a nod to the Aaron Dilloway fans around - while "Tower Of Babble" scratches and unleashes its rover of harsh distortions left, right and centre in a pool of liquid noise. Sick and highly recommended.
