Review: Last year long time Flower Records associates Masanori Ikeda and Takumi Kanedo (best known for his work as part of Cro-Magnon) released their debut album as Coastlines, a stunningly sunny, laidback affair that touched on everything from nu-jazz and nu-disco to dub, Latin rhythms and Balearic beats. Here they offer up a fresh double-header on a must-check 7" single. A-side "East Coast" is particularly alluring, with the duo joining the dots between Nils Frahm piano pieces, gentle nu-jazz grooves and wide-eyed Balearic ambience. The synths come to the fore on flipside "West Coast", an arguably even sunnier affair with slo-mo Latin beats, mazy solos and glistening guitars to the fore.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz/Nu Soul
Review: Cruisic are a Tokyo-based two piece dealing in electronically-charged jazz fusion. Ryusuke Kakizawa and Yukinari Iwata kicked the project off in 2019 with a cover of 'Inspector Norse', while last year they did their own rendition of 808 State's 'Pacific-707'. This time around they've invited Baku Furukawa to lend some smooth singing to a cover of Tania Maria's classic 'Come With Me', taking the song into dreamy bossa nova territory and providing they can handle vocals just as delicately as the instrumentation with their on-point covers series.

Review: Given the popularity of Todd Terje's 2012 nu-disco anthem "Inspector Norse", it's a bit of a surprise that we've not seen more cover versions over the years. By our reckoning, this is only the second, following the release of The Gene Dudley Group's heavy funk take in 2015. Cruisic's version is very different in tone, re-imagining the Norwegian's spiraling dancefloor epic as a shuffling jazz-funk workout where Terje's spiraling synthesizer lead lines are replayed on electric piano and flute. There are plenty of synths involved, but it's an altogether warmer and looser take on the anthem-like original. Slowly provides the obligatory B-side remix, turning Cruisic's version into a jaunty summer synth-dub workout with a touch of dub disco flavour.

Review: Twilight is the latest piece by long time DJ, producer and remixer, Dominic Dawson. The Japanese label Flower, has released this single to 7" complete with a remix for the second side. The title track is a catchy and funky house track that while the remix is a bit more Balearic and beachy. Both versions have their place in any house setlist and will set the tone for any eclectic DJ set. With the DJing background Dominic has, he is a great guide to setting the mood with music. Like the title artwork suggests, this is perfect music to watch the sun go down to.

Review: Sometime Phenomenal Handclap Band and Paqua member Quinn Lamont Luke doesn't release new music all that often (his last solo single, at least under his given name, appeared in 2017), but what he does put out is always on-point. This surprise single on long-serving Japanese label Flower Records is well worth checking. While undeniably Balearic - in-keeping with much of his work - 'No Getting Over You' is rooted in Americana (he hails from California, though has been based in New York for many years), with his own eyes-closed harmonic vocalisations and acoustic guitar motifs rising above woozy electronics and a shuffling, soft-focus drum machine rhythm. Tokyo-based Brit Max Essa provides the accompanying remix, which is naturally even more Balearic and soft-focus than Luke's excellent original mix.

Review: Cheery Japanese fusionists Onegram have a new album on the way - their first in four years - so to get us in the mood they've offered up this double A-side "45" on Flower Records. Lead-cut "Diggin" is typical of their joyous, sun-baked style. It's a fine fusion of reggae and seventies soul, rich in jaunty horn lines and super-sweet grooves, topped off by a bi-lingual vocal paying tribute to the twin attractions of record digging and dancing. Turn the record over and you'll find something equally as inspired: a dubby Afro-Balearic cover of Brian Briggs' synth-powered 1980s classic 'AEO'. It's vastly different to Briggs original, but in the best possible way. A breezy, unashamedly Balearic gem.

Review: Frankie Knuckles' legendary 1991 house record 'The Whistle Song' is the inspiration for this new roots and lovers rock cover on Japanese label Flower. Last year, Eric Kupper reissued his 'Sound Factory Re-rub' and some people took to pitching it down, spinning it at 110 bpm. Now, Flower Records' Reggae Disco Rockers have doe a proper chill out cover that is surely set to be one of the sunset smash hits of the summer. Next to a zoned out and horizontal a-side with all its majestic flute is an even more dreamy version on the flip that takes you to ambient heaven.

Review: With a storied history stretching right back to the mid-1990s, Reggae Disco Rockers are one of Japan's longest-serving reggae and rocksteady bands. While they're best-known for their original songs, they've delivered some killer cover versions over the years - including 2021's sun-splashed reggae re-imagining of Frankie Knuckles' classic house track 'The Whistle Song'. This seven-inch features another: the band's immersive, loved-up, super-sweet lover's rock-meets-Balearic reggae take on Neil Young classic 'Harvest Moon', featuring some suitably weary, emotive lead vocals from Marter. Flower Records regulars Slowly provide a dreamy and dubbed out take on the flip, as you'd expect given their output in recent times.

Review: The feels you get from looking at the artwork on this one - which it must be said bears more than a passing resemble to the series of pool paintings David Hockney did while living in LA - perfectly encapsulates the vibe of the music. It's laidback, stupidly warm and very much a place you want to be. The gently lilting disco-dub of "Groovin" is one for any outdoor session, while the Silent Dream version on the flilpside is a little more noodly and loved up. Either way, these are two choice cuts.

Review: Several countries have a great traditional of bands performing covers of the classics in various weird and wonderful styles well away from the original. Enter Ska Jazz Messengers with this one - they are a Venezuelan ska and jazz collective who have a new album icing on Flower but tease it first with this new 7". It opens up with a soulful reggae cover of Tears for Fears' classic jam 'Head Over Heels' which has a nice snaking rhythm and retains the cursory of the original vocal. And on the flip is a powerful remix by Slowly. This outfit is big in Japan having collaborated with Emerson Kitamura, Toru Nishiuchi and many more, and you should be just as fanned up.

Review: For their latest trick, Flower Records fusionists Masato Komatsu and Ryo Kawahara AKA Slowly have decided to cover The Willow Band's cult 1976 tropical-tinged disco number 'Willow Man'. In keeping with their trademark style, the Japanese pair has given their interpretation a decidedly disco-reggae feel, with the original's famous vocals (here provided by SA Martinez from Los Stellarians) and guitar riffs being joined by spacey synths and a sun-kissed, reggae-influenced groove. It's a fine cover version that takes the track in a new direction whilst also staying fairly faithful to the Willow Band's original version. It comes accompanied by Komatsu and Kawahara's glistening, sensationally summery instrumental version.
