Review: Fresh from the release of a fine EP of braindance-influenced workouts on Analogical Force, mysterious producer Brainwaltzera delivers his second full-length excursion. This time round, the influences are a lot more horizontal in tone, as the sometime Film artist explores the blurred lines between early '90s ambient, IDM, intelligent techno, drowsy trip-hop and deep space electro. It's a heady and intoxicating brew, as inspired by contemporary takes on classic British electronica as Boards of Canada and Aphex Twin. Highlights bubble to the surface with impressive frequency, from the hazy and horizontal beauty of "Poly_Ana Summers" and Pete Namlook style "Take 1" (complete with tape hiss and cyclical, Steve Reich style melodic movements), to the crunchy, skewed beats of "Frikadel (The End Bit)".

Review: Cologne's Marvin Horsch has released experiments on local imprint Dorfjungs in the form of 2013's Pace EP and the irresistible Deen EP in 2015. This time for Berlin avant garde imprint Film, he presents the gorgeous Fukushisha EP where "Omnisession #1" gets down with some seriously weird acid jazz voodoo business, then the lush ambient journey "Sun After Rain" which channels the same kind of emotive bliss that Gigi Masin or Gaussian Curve have in recent times. Finally, on the flip is more quality in the form of "Negobebo #2" a broken beat nu-jazz groove that reminds us of Atjazz's finer moments back in the early noughties.

Six Pianos/Keyboard Study #1 (heavyweight vinyl LP)
Cat: FILMLP 002. Rel: 05 Dec 16
Experimental/Electronic
  1. Steve Reich - "Six Pianos" (22:11)
  2. Terry Riley - "Keyboard Study #1" (19:50)
Review: This album is the brainchild of pianist and modern classical composer Gregor Schwellenbach, who decided to create contemporary interpretations of two touchstones of American minimalism. The A-side features a superb rendition of Steve Reich's 1973 piece Six Pianos, which was an early example of the minimalist icon's obsession with cyclical composition and natural phasing. This rendition wasn't recorded live, but instead features the work of six pianists carefully edited and layered up by Schwellenbach in his Berlin studio. On the flip you'll find his fine revision of Terry Riley's 1965 piece "Keyboard Study No. 1", which famously had no determinate length (it was up to the pianist to decide how long he continued playing the slowly shifting melodic patterns).
