Review: Los Angeles is about far more than billboard lifestyles and Hollywood red carpets these days. The city has slowly built an enviable reputation for its alternative music scenes over the past couple of decades, even if the 'democratisation' of the record industry's low revenue streams threaten to bankrupt the talent in and around the metropolis due to its famously (and ridiculously) high cost of living.
That hotbed spans a multitude of genres, from house and techno to punk and experimental, with Nicolas Snyder falling into the latter, and making a very good case to back up our point. Taking ambient sounds and splicing them together in ways that create sometimes awkward, sometimes infectious, but always enjoyable and tangible rhythms, Spell of Remembrance is both abstract and fully formed, organic yet electronic, and highly, highly original.
