The Last Remixes
Cat: ERS 014. Rel: 13 Oct 14

Deep House
Circle Dance (Nacho Patrol remix)
Meditation (Luke Wyatt remix)
Highway (Sad City remix)
Tortuga (Valet remix)
Review: Following the critical success of last years mini-LP The Last Tortuga, Black Deer is back on Emotional Response with a 4 track remix EP featuring friends and alumni Nacho Patrol, Luke Wyatt, Sad City and Valet. William Burnett returns to the label in the form of a remixes EP that takes his original productions and hands it to a broad selection of today's finest electronic producers, plus a rare outing from one of the label's favourite pyschedelic experimentalists. While Danny Wolfer's Legowelt project needs little introduction, it was only right that his inclusion on the label came from a more cosmic outlook. With must have EPs and a long player offered, his afro-infused Nacho Patrol moniker is a must check. In Circle Dance the original is taken by the hand down to an afro-tech-funk'n'breaks basement for one of his best remixes to date and rightly so for one of his old buds. Luke Wyatt follows with an uplifting and warped retake on Meditation. The kraut influence of the original is built on with fuzz guitar and a solo that builds across the track to a higher peak. Play this at sunrise for reaffirmation of life itself. Next is a big favourite of the label, catching the ear from his first release on Underwater Peoples
and a lush follow up for Phonica. His pure ambience of a remix strips everything back and lets the 4th World shine. With a 2nd EP due on Phonica, look out for something on this label soon. Finally, one of the main influences on the label when it started a few years back. Valet aka Portland multi-instrumentalist and mum, Honey Owens offers a deep, beautiful and haunting retake, adding whispers, drones, guitar, toms, keys and intonations to swallow you whole.

Review: With releases on a who's who list of labels that are pushing experimental, underground house and techno including L.I.E.S, Creme Organisation, Echovolt and Strange Life, William Burnett has been steadily putting out releases that have gained a lot of respect without having to shout too loud about it. So much so that as well as running his own stella WT Records label, William is now often cited as a producer's producer. Deep and full of dub aesthetics that encompasses a world of it's own, his music is not just driven by a need to keep the floor moving, but are also about taking your headspace somewhere else. Progressing things a stage further is the Black Deer project. Recently launched, but in gestation for some time, it's introspective slant, plus loose referencing to his upbringing in Texas, allows William more freedom for experimentation. The Last Tortuga is taken from the same sessions that yielded the Willie Burns The Overlord EP on Trilogy Tapes as well as Black Deer's Trail Of Tears EP on Rush Hour, this 6 track EP has been due on the label for sometime, but it's been worth the wait as his sound has developed and expanded to take in ambient, drone and krautrock and highlights his musicianship in a new light.

Review: Gone beyond. That's what they say when an (astro) pilot crashes to earth and takes the journey into the big sky. When Juan Trippe took that last flight little did he know that his re-incarnated self would be an electronic pioneer. In tandem with his co-pilot Guido Zen (his own father also a pilot) and Kyle Martin (from the Land Of Light) they formed Brain Machine and scaled the highest Peaks to bring back music both unearthly and intensely human. Are we all not stardust anyway? This music proves it, takes you out flips you over and rolls you in stardust. Don't try and think it through, make sense of it, grasp it - just wander in wonder and bask in beauty.
Get lost again.

Review: Brain Machine's Peaks LP was a highlight of the Emotional Response catalogue last year, and it's only right that the album gets a high-class set of remixes to accompany it. The label have pulled out the stops here with an all-star cast, leading in with Salon Des Amateurs dreamweaver Toulouse Low Trax who drops a pinging, plucking version of "Light Space". Then Gigi Masin steps up with an illustrious revision of "Crystal Clouds", while Harmonious Thelonious brings a heavy yet measured, techno-minded presence to "Traces". Ronny & Renzo round the package out with playful synth splashes on their version of "Eclipse Predictions".

Review: Emotional Response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take Brain Machine's excellent Peaks LP to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of Rollmottle who refigures "To The Stars" as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. Die Wilde Jagd takes on "Mercury Ripples" and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and Merrick Adams pushes "Alpha Moon" into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. Cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of "Nexus Vox".

Eternal Night (Steeve Moore remix)
Heaven (Unit 4 remix)
Pulsations (Majeure remix)
Capricorn Rising (Spectral Empire remix)
Review: When released on the THISISNOTANEXIT label in 2008 to little fanfair, the Brain Machine by Brain Machine was 2 unknown producers delivering a unique take on the electronic, experimental climbs of the Krautrock sound. Now known to be Rome based Guido Zen and London's Jon Tye - aka one half of the Seahawks - the album soon spread through word of mouth and was backed with live dates from Scotland to Scandinavia. Handing the album to a selection of producers they admired resulted in remixes from Dusseldorf's Unit 4 and Musiccargo, London's Spectral Empire - aka George Thompson (Black Merlin) and Kyle Martin (Land of Light) - and from the USA, Jonas Reinhardt and both Steve Moore and A.E Paterra of space rock pioneers, Zombi. With the demise of TINAE in 2010, the remixes never saw the light of day. The Lost Machine EP collects 4 of those remixes on to one 12", while the rest will be available as digital only. A collection of percussive interpretations take the album's electronic kraut expanses towards a darker club sound that wouldn't go amiss on the more experimental offerings from LIES or Creme Organisation. All-in-all a welcome archival excavation from Emotional Response.

Review: Emotional Response do a great service here to all lovers of braindance craving new fixes since Rephlex shut up shop. Brainwaltzera's debut EP Marzipan was a self-released concern that sold out quickly back in 2016, meeting with emotionally charged responses from those wanting to nab a copy. Now it's more widely available, the gorgeous lilt of bubbling 101 melodies and delicate drum machine patterns can spread their wings and bring some healing vibes to a broader audience of electronica devotees. Coming on with the sensitivity of Wisp and other contemporary braindancers, this is how comforting home listening beats should be done.

Review: Having done such wonderful work alongside Wolf Muller on The Sound Of Glades album, Cass makes a welcome return with an expansive album release on Emotional Response. The German producer's ambient tendencies blossom here, occasionally meeting with laconic drums as on "U" but primarily dealing in huge swathes of melody. DJs will want to hold out for the dramatic pulse of "Ann", where a more pronounced drum set makes for one of the album's most club-ready moments. There's a strong variety of tones and moods across Youth Sessions, from the strafing arpeggios of "Running" to the bliss-out shapeless swirl of "Prismatic Prolog", and this ensures that the album will not dull with repeated listens.

Review: Cherrystones returns with the second of the "Aged" EPs for Emotional Response. Time propels and so does sound, thus orbiting nuances and motion leads us here, to present whatever maybe or interpreted as. Since the acclaimed Aged Of Bronze EP a symbiotic progress of craft arrives in the aptly titled Aged Of Silver. Again each track is like a coded syntax, unlocking the puzzle to aid a listeners journey and experience, building blocks to a utopian scape in form without form notes and pictures living and residing in the dimensions.

Never pandering to trends, his art based on immediacy and the moment, no disposable sub genres that fade as fast as they emerge, transposing and emitting heard and unheard a way to communicate with himself and those that identify.

A capsule of touched emotions bearing gifts for those in the present and wishing to be present, a key with keys analogue for Silver Tongues and Brass monkeys living in the shadow of a Scorpian's Tail.

Review: Emotional Response present something intriguing and oh so fresh from Cherrystones, who has most commonly been spotted recently lurking about labels like Bahnsteig 23, but in fact has a legacy reaching back to the late 90s. This new mini-album is reportedly the result of a pointed retreat to Scotland - a period of semi-isolation with minimal distractions from the serious business of analogue synths and reel-to-reel tape. There's a lot going on, from the slinky, boogie-licked groove of 'Amaziac' to the sludgy, wave tinted 'Rave Digger', but throughout the common theme is one of rough, upfront waveforms - maximal sounds with lashings of character, wielded with glee by an artist knee deep in their craft.

Review: The supremely talented William Burnett makes a belated return to Emotional Response, and this time he's got Brooklyn-based studio pal John Beall in tow. Those who enjoyed the duo's release on the L.I.E.S. white label series should lap up Shimmer. It hits hard from the off, with "Snaker Charmer" delivering a velvet-clad punch to the guts. It's techno right from the top drawer, with darting electronics and drawn out pads riding a thunderous groove. The title track is impressive, too, with surging electronics and throbbing synths riding a techno-tempo groove crafted out of an old hardcore breakbeat. There's some more considered fare on offer, too, with the shimmering ambience of "Hold Me Take Me Leave Me" completing a superb package.

DJ Normal 4 has boiled his name down for this latest trip out on Emotional Response, which finds the German breakbeat evangelist getting into a specifically tranced-out mode which should sit right with many a new age raver. The 90s is plastered all over this release, which rolls low and heavy like a good trance record should, and there's an honesty about DJN4's particular approach which makes the tracks land perfectly. Conceptual consistency is also key, meaning the twitchier cuts like 'X Capsule' can sit comfortably alongside unabashed wig out fodder such as the psy-tinged 'Mind Expander XS'. If you love the early, moodier strains of trance, this record is essential.

Kosmose (19:54)
Oceanic Mythology (24:44)
Review: Number three in the four part SchleiBen series from Emotional Response arrives with Don't DJ and Tropical Hi-Fi at the controls. The former is the current creative endeavour of Florian Meyer, founder of the Diskant label and one of the more experimental and academic producers to surface from Dusseldorf in recent times. He also forms one third of The Durian Brothers. Meyer's "Kosmose" is a 20 minute piece which explores the link between polyrhythmic percussion and brooding electronics; understandably, it's ripe with introspective qualities. Offering some contrast, Northern Australian producer Tropical Hi-fi turns in "Oceanic Mythology", a meandering journey through found sounds, psychedelia, folk music and more which sounds like listening to SUED B-sides whilst tripped out on acid.

Review: The Durian Brothers consist of rising polyrhythmic talent Don't DJ, outernational adventurer Harmonious Thelonious and Salon Des Amateurs resident Marc Matter. Following their excellent outings on Kontra-Musik and Diskant, the experimental trio build on a burgeoning relationship with Emotional Response by gathering together some of the best of their intense, globetrotting sounds. There's a great focus on cyclical rhythms, not least on the wonderful "Planete Sauvage", while "Mille Yeaux" takes a more spacious, groovy route through wooden percussion and pinging organic tones. Considering the scarcity of the original Diskant pressings of these tracks, this collection couldn't come quickly enough.

Review: Emotional Response returns to Dusseldorf with a compilation of the music emanating out of the Diskant label over some 7 EPs between 2009-2014. Featuring the productions of The Durian Brothers, Harmonious Thelonious and Don't DJ, their unique polyrhythmic percussive sound of the label is highlighted across this special double album. Legend goes it was discovering the first Diskant release on the wall of Honest Jons store back in 2009 that became a prime influences in the creation of Emotional Response. Born out of the early years of Salon Des Amateurs, the Diskant label was set up as a vehicle for the music and member's music of The Durian Brothers, namely Florian Meyer (Don't DJ), Stefan Schwander (Harmonious Thelonious) and Marc Matter. Coming together from their own music backgrounds to explore a new experimental polyrhythmic para-funk via distorted electronics. Using specially prepared turntables, hypnotic rhythmic patterns, noise and sequencing they have created a dense and fuzzy excess that over four sides of vinyl is here now presented as a retrospective, but not an end, to highlight their unique sound.

Review: Elektronik Body Girl is the musical alter-ego of Shelbatra Jashari featuring production assistance from Brussels's soFa. The Belgo-Albanian postpunk pair cooked up sounds that accompany an imagined dystopian industrial wasteland with tons of improv and lots of raw, jagged rhythm. Dealing with the "empowering feminine" and its representation were key to the vision of Jashari as well as abrasive textures and stark atmospheres. Her vocals touch on her roots in Belgium and Kosovo from an outsider's position and label associate Toulouse Low Trax cooks up a brilliant beatdown mix to seal the deal.

Review: Stories of Prison sees Timothy J Fairplay returns to Emotional Response having helped shape the identity of the label in it's infancy with the release of Somebody, Somewhere back in 2012. A lot of music has come from both artist and label since then, with Fairplay's reputation as a solo artist fully established thanks to releases on a myriad of labels. Stories of Prison is a mini LP rich in the musical intensity Fairplay has instilled in all his music to date, yet there is a daring sense of diversity at play too. From the effervescent dubbed out house toughness of opening track "The Quay", Fairplay veers into subaquatic breakbeat, deep synth Love From Outer Space chuggers, and other late night sonic treats.

I Do Not Believe
Review: After debuting with an album's worth of experimental, ambient electronic explorations from the hugely talented NYC based Jason Letkiewicz under his Alan Hurst moniker, the Emotional Response label maintains such high standards with their second release. The focus shifts to Timothy J Fairplay, a UK producer whose growing discography is proving to be impressive too. Ears should still be ringing to his World Unknown released homage to Ancient Egypt's predilection for psychedelic drugs and its little surprise he's been hand picked for the debut release on Sir Weatherall's new vinyl initiative Bird Scarer. The four tracks that make up Somebody, Somewhere retain that dubby mid tempo poise that permeated Fairplay's output to date, though he seems to revel in the freedom to experiment Emotional Response encourages, focusing more on developing expansive patterns of synths on tracks like "Aim for The Yellow Sector" and the title track. Special mention too for "I Do Not Believe" which comes on in a Deep Medi doing digidub style!

Review: While they may have landed a fair while ago, it's great to see Emotional Response revisit Timothy J Fairplay's crucial early EPs with an absolutely on point remix package. Scientific Dreamz Of U brings his distinctive signal chain to "Stories Of Prison", using grinding synths and some snaking broken beats to create an early 90s trance mood to die for. Alessandro Parisi keeps things on a distinctly new wave tip for "Aim For The Yellow Sector", and Perseus Traxx brings a bold set of machine beats and technicolour synths to "Saco Bay". Antenna finishes the EP off by creating a winsome, wavey version of "Night Ferry" for sensitive souls to do the robot to.

Review: Emotional Response's tenth-anniversary celebration are brought to a superb close with Benedikt Frey. He serves up a magnificently dubbed out and psychedelic cover version of Joy Division's 'She's Lost Control' across four different versions. The vocal version might be the best for us - it retinas that compelling dark drum funk you expect from the band with eerie synth additions and hefty bass. The instrumental is more slow and dubbed out in a traditional sense with the Lucas Croon dub doused in endless reverb. Last of all is a dub by Frey himself that is full of open space and bass bin distorting headiness.

Review: Emotional Response welcome Detroit's Fuxa to the label with a mini-album that takes their trademark pyschedelic guitar and synth instrumental rock and showcases the more spiritual and ethereal creativity running within. Specially curated from Fuxa's two recent digital only albums - "Dirty D" and "Frequencies for Physical, Mental and Spiritual Healing" - this special 8 track selection sees each album represented on one side of vinyl. Highlighting band leader Randall Neimann's talent, a mastery of the studio that creates a wall of (mellow) sound that envelops and encases in equal measure. While very much Randall's band, the colloborative nature of the project sees numurous artists appear, with members from Mazzy Star, Add N To (X), Dean & Britta, Spiritualized and founding member Ryan Anderson all providing willing support to seek his primal sound. Noteworthy too is his first appearance as lead vocalist. It is the uplifting to hear his voice on the celebratory Shout Out Loud, the paean of Dream (Don't Give Up) and finally the blissedout-surf-psychedelia of Amen. Dirty Frequencies is a welcome departure for the label, a pyschedelic turn in the mold of the Nick Nicely (ERS005) release, but all the better for it because these sounds and ideas deserve to be heard. An inner trip yes, but really a celebration of the deeper part of the soul - a way to connect.

Apollo Soyuz was originally released digitally earlier this year via bandcamp, but you can see why Leath would want to license it for a proper vinyl edition. Alexis Georgopoulos and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma aren't necessarily household names, but their respective careers have touched on many a respected project in a variety of fields. Here, the pair turn in some wonderfully expressive compositions played out across all manner of organic instrumentation. The richness of the production and the highly developed ideas embedded within this gorgeous LP should resonate for a long time to come, not least because the pieces are all so easy on the ears. From Steely Dan precision to Balearic lilt, this is proper players music played by proper players.

Nzambi (Terekke remix)
Parallel Sensations (Timothy J Fairplay vocal remix)
Before The Dawn (Jonas Reinhardt remix)
Review: After the tense and dramatic soundscapes of Jason Letkiewicz's Nzambi LP under his soundtrack guise Alan Hurst, Emotional Response have put the tracks to the test for three appropriately oddball remixers. Fellow L.I.E.S. affiliate Terekke turns out a heavily sedated dub of "Nzambi" that rides a pacey house beat but buries everything in delay and reverb. Timothy J Fairplay brings some serious sleazy 80s electro tones to "Parallel Sensations", complete with predatory vocal and thick ladles of synthy goodness. Finally, Jonas Reinhardt cools off the intensity with a blissful ambient version of "Before The Dawn" which plunges headfirst into a warm bed of melodic drones.

Review: The same people behind Emotional Rescue launch as fine sister imprint in the shape of Emotional Rescue, with a near perfect insight into how the label will operate thanks to Nzambi - a quite stunning full length album from Jason Letkiewicz under his Alan Hurst moniker. If you consider yourself an avid purchaser of vinyl, you will no doubt have added some Letkiewicz heat to your collection in recent times, with excellent releases as Steve Summers and Innergaze in recent times. The Alan Hurst project sees the Brooklyn producer in more laid back form, indulging his passion for library sounds and experimental electronics with just as much aplomb. Allegedly commissioned to soundtrack a film on modern Haitian Voodoo, Nzambi is a woozily intoxicating thirteen track set that opens your senses to a true darkness in this producer's palette of sounds that's not really been explored before.

Review: With such a collaboration heavy project in the "Yet Another Kito Jempere Album" announced it is no surprise that this following remixes pack comes laden with familiar friends'n'family, plus additional support.

Taking the ambient meets acappella paene Your Ghost In Me and creating one of his on-point dance floor dramas, Lipelis (Animals Dancing / LIES), utilising Hard Ton's classic 'US House' vocal delivery to create a perfect "big room" anthem.

Next up Born Free boss, Samo DJ (Public Possession / Trilogy Tapes) pumps A King Of Comets with Mood II Swing punch meets Ballistic Brothers riddim'n'culture for some hip-breaks-dancehall swing.

Cable Toy (Low Budget Family) presents the label favourite with his bouncing, yearning remix of album stand out, Time Traveller. Countered with a perfect touch of summer vibrations and melancholia this up and coming St Petersburg resident has to be watched.

Finally, Linja (Avidiya / Malka Tuti) offers a deep, shuffling version of Untitled Ritual. Arpeggios throb, percussion snaps, tempos shift, planets realign, vocals by Noteless call...wait believing, just we have seen it, God is waiting, nothing can bleeding.

Only friends. Only family. This is Kito's emotional response.

Review: The acclaimed Kito Jempere joins Cherrystones and DJN4 on the label for 2020, with an album full of international minds. Working with array of collaborators across a cast of friends including Jimi Tenor, Wolfram, Hard Ton, Lipelis, Rich Thair (Red Snapper), Ruf Dug, Cedric Gasaida (Azari & III) and many more, presenting this, his third long play.

A hail of freedom of thoughts and voices before these changed times, recorded and shared across continents. Kito - following releases with DFA, Lo Recordings, Bordello A Parigi, Hell Yeah and Duca Bianco - acts as curator rather than conductor, the idea not to transform the contributions but allow them absolute.

Sending music and receiving back, nothing was touched to keep the truth and honour. From Tokyo to London, Berlin to his base in St Petersburg, trusting the chosen artists led to a broad palette, as his 4/4 driven funk expands with Jazz horns to Motorik percussion, Avant-Reich vocals to White Isle melodies, J Pop Balearics to Chanson stories wrapped around Club memories.

A true world meeting, crossing borders and genres. An eye on the dance floor and week long chill outs. With remixes from the likes of Samo DJ, Lipelis, Cable Toy and more to follow, this is more than Yet Another Kito Jempere Album.

Review: The latest transmission from Emotional Response's ever-essential Schleissen series takes a trip to the Fourth World with Jon Keliehor on the A side. There's no denying the influence of Jon Hassell on tracks like opener "Serpent In The Sky," but Keliehor channels those exotic notions into some truly captivating music that is all his own. From chiming tones to purposeful percussion, his sound is a rich and evocative one, beautifully recorded and artfully composed. On the other side, Lord Of The Isles indulges his ambient side to great effect with no less than seven vignettes of varying moods and energies, all played out through delicately handled synthesisers.

He's since delivered a debut album to Growing Bin and released as Earth Trax on Rhythm Section and others. The mood across this collection of pieces produced for Polish studio TVP Culture opens up a rich seam of inspiration around the ambient end of Kruczynski's work through short pieces rich in sonorous delights. From fluttering fourth world-isms to hazy dub soundscapes, this is pure listening pleasure from start to finish.

Review: The Schleissen series goes from strength to strength on Emotional Response, inviting another two esteemed luminaries in the field of ambience to indulge themselves on a long side of wax. Matthewdavid is a welcome addition to the series - the West Coast champion has been operating in all kinds of unusual realms for a long time - and he comes to this release with a new project entitled Mindflight. The resulting track "Sonos' loops and folds heavy washes of drone and feedback in a thoroughly stimulating bath of harmony. Firecracker affiliate HOLOVR meanwhile presents three different musings on the dynamics of vintage UK techno, all crooked beat formations and luscious synth strokes gazing into the future.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Schleissen 1 marks the beginning of a major, four-part project from Stuart Leath's Emotional Response label; an in-depth exploration of the "outer reaches" of drone and ambient. It's a grand scheme, highlighted perfectly by the grandiose scale of Serbian maverick Abul Mogard's opener - a hypnotic, 19-minute exploration of modular drone music that's as freaky as it is beautiful. Stefan Schwander dons his now familiar Harmonious Thelonious alias on the flip, laying down two brilliantly melodious synthesizer pieces inspired by the cyclical compositions of acclaimed minimalist composer Steve Reich. Both pieces are borderline stunning, and more than worth the admission price.

Review: Golf Channel and Emotional Response embark on a mission to bring together two generations of Kraut excellence as Dunkelziffer's Dominik Von Senger collaborates with the Montezumas Rache pairing of Jan Schulte and Christian Pannenborg. As you'd expect, the resultant EP is rather fine. They set the tone with "Rheinfaren", where a low-slung, dubbed-out groove is complimenting by twinkling guitars, delay-laden Jew's harp parts, and other sun-kissed elements. "Tangerine (Krauter Mix)" doffs a cap to Tangerine Dream and Dunkelziffer, with tumbling guitars - some effected by a wah-wah pedal - and vintage synths combining to create an effortlessly Balearic mood. Closer "Guten Morgen Bromio" is a fuzzier affair, combining grooves and sounds reminiscent of Pink Floyd's Animals full-length with the out-there attitude of classic krautrock.

Review: Belated vinyl issue of the excellent second LP from Musiccargo for the Dusseldorf fanatics! It may well be the seventh release on Emotional Response, but the label happy Stuart Leath will tell anyone in close proximity that the Musiccargo pairing of Gerhard Michel and Gordon Pohl were largely inspirational in his decision to start the label. Probably most widely known for the early appearance on James Holden's DJ Kicks mix of their remix of "Disco" by Grackle, Musiccargo are modern day exponents of the Krautrock sound pioneered by Dusseldorf acts like Can, Cluster and Neu. Harmonie arrives some four years after the duo's highly sought after debut album Hand In Hand and the six track album is a sumptuous 'adult kraut' delight from start to end.

Now Emotional Response are doing the right thing and giving the record a second airing under the duo's alternative alias The Naturals, and it's not hard to see why they wanted to do the reissue. Loose and funky, but also deliriously psychedelic and indebted to the 1970s golden era of songwriting, this is a quintessential Emotional record if ever we heard one.

Wrottersley Road (Invisible Hands reprise)
Review: The latest Emotional Response release provides something very special indeed, in the form of a new track from under the radar psychedelic rock musician Nick Nicely. Nicely has been making music from the 70s onwards, but his music has recently undergone something of a critical reappraisal, with the likes of Robert Wyatt and Robyn Hitchcock supposedly inspired by his work; "Wrottersley Road" provides the ideal entry into his music, a masterful piece of shoegaze pop filled with fuzzed out guitars and Eastern psychedelic tones. Remixes are provided by Invisible Hands, who provide a minimal 80's inspired electro-pop version, which comes saturated in radiophonic textures, and The Oscillation, who take the track into even more abstract ambient territory than the original, deep into a place where time seems to stand still entirely, drawing its rich textures out into infinity.

Review: Alessio Natalizia's Human Capabilities album was one of the highlights of the label in 2014, so it seems only right to get four artists to create their own unique versions for this EP. Starting with Pye Corner Audio, Martin Jenkins delivers a pulsating remix while Valentina Magaletti (Shit & Shine) and Tom Relleen (The Oscillation) take the industrial loops of "Mathematical Man" and provide an improvised jam of drums, bass and percussion. L/F/D/M's remix of "Double Blind" strips things back to the core of the track, looping it incessantly for maximum intensity before far away melodies bring you back again. The EP closes with a wonderous remix from drone specialist Abul Mogard, who again is at his best, taking the melodic ambience of the original and modulating it in to a brooding and emotional remix.

Review: 2013 was a good year for Mr Natalizia. Breaking out of his musical (comfort) zone and touring schedule as one half of Kompakt Records stars Walls, a deeper side to his music oeuvre was shown on the excellent Not Waving debut, Umwelt, before then going on to compile the killer "Mutazione" compilation of Italian New Wave 1980-1988 for Strut Records. Spanning 9 tracks Human Capabilities takes the sound of Umwelt and the subsequent super limited cassette only "reinterpretations" of Redacted and mixes harder percussive tracks alongside explorations of melody through ambient pieces that close each side. On titles Mathematical Man, Double Blind and Defensive Function, industrial and kosmische percussion is pushed to the fore, while Power Source Above Beam Line is the closest thing to a club track Alessio has produced outside of Walls. However, it's the more melodic Future Rain, Etosha Pan Aderci and the closing Satie homage, Conscious/Subliminal that a new side to the project can be heard. Having been named after a This Heat song, Not Waving is developing beyond that to go as far as the album title suggests. With a pressing of just 400 copies before more new music comes from Not Waving, plus material due from Walls and the planned return of guitar based side-project, Banjo Or Freakout, all coming later this year, 2014 looks to be a more exciting year for Mr Natalizia than ever before.

Review: Out 2 is a project from Jeremy Campbell and R. Zanzibar, who have previously worked together on albums for L.I.E.S. and Lectric Sands under different aliases. They sound right at home on Emotional Response, channeling the influence of 1980s New York dancefloor hybridization into six original tracks and their counterpart dub versions. It's an impeccable tribute to the forefathers of new / no / minimal wave with the right kind of funk rubbed in the groove and ample space in the mix for all the live dubbing the style demands. "Moving" is a surefire death disco party starter, "Dancing" hovers in a beyond the grave island boogie reverie and "Some Air's Red There" heads out into exotically enhanced territory without losing that NYC grit. It's a marvelous record, with the dub versions adding new dimensions to the music rather than simply repeating the same tricks sans vocals.

Review: The 2nd part of the 4 part split (Schleissen) series welcomes rising stars of the experimental end of modern electronica, with Warsaw's The Phantom and Glagow's Sad City bringing a lush, Fourth World ambience to ErB002.

Emotional Response returns to the Schleissen series with another cross-European exploration of ambient minimalism, film sources, field recordings and fluid soundscapes to create an over-whelming album of beauty for the listener to simply let go and wash away to. This time the influences are softer, but still prevalent, with forbears Satie, Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Russel, Cunningham, Toop and of course of Hassel and Eno all acknowledged and explored through structure and the gentle syncopation of melody or occasional rhythm. With a nod to the film works of Tangerine Dream (or is it Global Communcation?) The Phantom follows up his outstanding LP1 with a move further in to the ethereal. Working as one piece,
Across The River, Beneath The Trees and Europa go beyond the real train with their blissful, floating arrangements creating an atmospheric blanket that consumes you. This is matched by up and coming producer Sad City. With 2 recent EPs on Phonica's Special Editions series as well as his debut on Underwater Peoples, his offering, Limbo, shows an exemplary understanding of sound design, resulting in an immersive, panoramic 18 minutes of pure music. Ambience, drone and modulation interwine and slowly engulf the listener so, as the title suggests, the only option is to be still. A change from SchleiBen 1 then, ErB002 is gentler on the mind and ears, but still challenges you to stop and (un)listen.

Furthermore the series ties with Dusseldorf remain, as Osnabruck based producer Niklas Rehme-Schluter lines the flip with the beautiful ambient touches of his Cass project. The two part efforts from Potter, Natalizia and Zen offer a perfect marriage of methods, with percussion hinting at and Techno, while the constant Drone influx and disintegration grab your attention, overlapping with rhythmic repetition deeper and deeper. The Cass contributions see tracks from the German artist's cassette only Hiding Place album presented on vinyl for the first time and fit snugly into the sonic ethos explored over the previous SchleiBen releases.

This first one is his debut on the label and comes with a gorgeous cover that perfectly encapsulates the sounds within. 'Dust Acid' is a sparse cut with dusty drums and meandering basslines that slowly sink you in, then 'Magnetic Acid Two,' which like all of these was recorded live, is another expertly reduced brew of murkiness with plenty of frayed edges and vintage analog sounds. 'Wanna Show U Acid' is a late-night acid dream and 'Magnetic Acid Four' shuts down slightly more bite. Four timeless backroom cuts, make no mistake.

This one from Martin Jenkins finds him making an homage to the acid house he has always loved with opener 'Stegan Acid' starting with slow grocers and foggy moods run through with subtle 303 modulations. 'Magnetic Acid Three' is another deep and stripped-back sound with rumbling drums and bass coloured with soft acid contours and 'Thermionic Acid' gurgles a little more as the icy hi-hats cut through a mutant deep techno swamp. 'Magnetic Acid One' is one final meditation on acidic house depths.

Emotional Response worked with the artist in trawling through a vast archive of material recorded between 1997 and 2017, rescued from hard drives once thought lost, and now gathered as a compelling ambient release with the full fat hardware veneer of Roy's work to date, but coming from a more reflective angle. From cathedral-quaking drones to deeply submerged aquatic excursions, this album has plenty to draw you into the inner world of an acid hero.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Arriving at the mythical 23rd release is a time for contemplation. A chance to abandon the structures, guidelines and ethos of what has gone and do something different and fun. Here then is the apt titled 2 Late 4 Love EP from young Roy. To fit, the aesthetic of the label is abandoned for a sparse black + white hand stamped sleeves, limited one off pressing and congenial smiley on our faces. Afterall, everything starts with a 303...

One of the pleasures of running a label is the connections made, people met, artists worked with and also, opportunities it brings. To overcome ego is an unachievable life long challenge, so to work with others and bring the light their way is to seek some redemption. of a darkened soul.

Newcastleis Acid Waxa label has been bubbling away for years, putting out limited cassettes for the (acid) heads. Star of the show. Player of the year. Roy Of The Ravers !! Himself mythical beyond time. Here on new adventures in the search for love.

The title track comes in versions of snap electro percussives, dream-laden pads, all twinned with an ethereal otherness via contorting 303 melodies. Star of the piece Emotinium is itself a homage of a homage. Replays not yet banned, this is space-age dance music for the mind and body that goes beyond being bounced around via some Melchester Acid (anyone?). Crunching, tough, primordial, a return to our source.

All together an EP celebration of the TB-303 at its finest. All this still links to the Emotional family via a meeting of minds. An Acid Response.
