Review: Emotional Rescue dig out a quintessential private press curio and give it a tasteful 7" release that should tickle all lovers of blue-eyed soul with a subtle electronic kink. There's a smooth pop nous at the heart of "Passion", but also a naivety in the production that hints at the bedroom studio roots of 4AM's limited forays into recorded work. There's space for Fairlight-esque stabs and something approaching an acid bassline, but it's all framed in a mellifluous slice of melodious groove. "The Man I Feel" takes the A side and steers it into playful instrumental territory to great effect, the consummate 80s dub out.

Review: Emotional Rescue go hunting in the reeds for forgotten projects, and come up trumps once again. Delay Tactics formed at the beginning of the 80s as a tape looping project from Carl Weingarten and Reed Nesbit before expanding their palette with Walter Whitney's synth vamping. They didn't last past their second album, 1984's Any Questions?, but now the finest of the band's catalogue has been documented here. The sound is prime inquisitive 80s, teetering between the traditional band dynamic and the experimental pastures of technology-powered music. At times infectiously playful ('Oyster') and at others compellingly beautiful ('Kites'), Delay Tactics are exactly the kind of band that deserve another moment in the sunshine.

Review: Emotional Rescue turns its attention to Spanish artist Luis Delgado, who made a name for himself fusing traditional folk music from across the globe with experimental electronic practice. His first album Vathek stands as one of his masterworks, originally released in 1986 and featuring a range of different electro-acoustic approaches that draw you in with their strange, dynamic textures. There's a whiff of Jon Hassell's treated trumpet about "La Puerta De Ebano" while "El Sacrificio De Catoul" deals in a dense weave of chimes and percussion. Review: Said to be discovered and championed by a young Daniele Baldelli, this track from 1983 has been defined as a cosmic classic. The work of producer Steve Coe and his partner Sheila Chandra as Monsoon, they combined elements of dub, dance and ethnic music, mainly released through their Indipop label. Their mesmerising and majestic track 'The Dream' is featured on this reissue by Emotional Rescue, as well as an edit of original B-side cut 'Meditasian' featuring a sublime sitar solo which will hypnotise you into submission, but cut down by a good 20 minutes compared to the original.

Review: Group Du Jour was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1983 and have had a storied career spanning the decades since. They have always brought together live, ethnic, and electronic sounds with folk and modern pop, later getting ever more experimental. Early albums Forgotten Colors in 1986 and Wonderful Vision in 1988 are groundbreaking affairs, the latter of which gave rise to 'Motion Of Waves', which is something of a cult favourite for deep diggers. It is a rich instrumental groove that layers up synthesiser, flute, guitar and haunting vocals sitting over a brilliantly electric beat. The whole thing was a live one-take recording and is perfectly suited to both sunset and sunup moments of dancing pleasure.

Review: Here's a record perfectly suited to the Emotional Rescue sphere. International Noise Orchestra was born out of a collaboration between Berliner Ulrich Homberg and Algerian drummer Jol Allouche, first embarked on in the 1980s when they sought to combine 'new technology with old'. The results are wonderfully vibrant, evocative of the era but also packed with open-ended experimentation that sounds fresh more than 30 years later. There's a push and pull between the collaborating parties, but the frisson between cultures and methods is where this record gets its unique groove from, all delivered with a slick 80s cool it's hard to resist.

Review: Emotional Rescue follow up on the excellent first instalment of reissue material from International Noise Orchestra with this second round of visionary curios from the late '80s. The 'Instrumental Muezzin' mix of 'Gimme More Lovin' comes on like Art Of Noise rocking hard at a slow tempo, all Fairlight flex and more plush digi-synth tones than you can shake a shoulder pad at. 'Yeh Naina Yaa Hai' points to the outernational focus of the group with its canny fusion of Indian musical tropes with electronics, all framing Asha Bhosle's peerless vocal. 'Sick Of Love' works wonders with angular time signature explorations and another plunderphonic funk freakout, while 'A Lulu A Bobe Danz' gets into even more virtuoso kitsch deviations. 'Listen To The Earthbeat / The Driving Force' finishes the set with a compelling rhythmic workout accented by underwater surrealism.

Review: The third volume of International Noise Orchestra archival dives from Emotional Rescue sees no let up in the dizzying, dazzling displays of visionary 80s production from this curious German-Algerian project. The fusion between bold and brash synths and samples with Jol Allouche's drumming is fluid throughout. On lead track 'The Atlantic Swimmer' the project sounds incredibly of its time but also utterly out of time and space in its futuristic outernational reverie. There's space for era-appropriate bombast on 'Listen/Gimme More Lovin', which shimmers with a new wave tint, while a rubbery b-line on 'I Speak Your Body Electric' almost hints towards acid in its fluid glides. Stellar, spellbinding stuff highly deserving of a second airing.

The global outlook of the German project continues apace with the wonderfully angular, Arabian-tinged take on 'Come Together'. From Fairlight CMI sampledelia to wiggy synth, guitars and drums jamming out on 'Vit Quai Don', this is a record that veers in sonic style with gleeful abandon. 'Marching In Time' slaps and slides like Prince jamming with Jah Wobble, and 'Bum Bum Krach (Hommage A Adele Sandrock)' is a particularly leftfield drum solo punctuated by curious growls. You won't hear another record that sounds quite like this one, that's for sure.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Fresh from 1986 - and recently re-edited by John Talabot - documents do not get any more Balearic than this.... Spanish trio Ishinohana's debut album is rich in cosmic attitude. At points daydreaming while the sand laps at its toes (the lilting nylon strings and soft padded hand drums of "Lucia", the overlapping guitars and galloping refrains of "La Flor De Piedra"), at others a much darker, more spacious star-gazing affair (the Arabic dreams of "El Beso Negro") and at others a heavier rhythmic, floor-minded approach (the lolloping bass and reggae-wise strums of "Variacion 23") this is a timeless document that befits situations and sceneries that existed long before this record was conjured up... And will remain so for generations after. Stunning.

Review: Emotional Rescue has had this reissue in the works for a while, but it was delayed by the sad passing of Steve Coe after the rerelease of The Ganges Orchestra's The Dream. Finally, though, the right time has come for this one to be bacon the racks and it is a much-loved reminder of Coe's wizardry in the studio. It comes with plenty of Eastern flavours to bring something new to the dance floor, not least thanks to tabla disciple turned teacher, Jhalib (Millar), who helped Coe on this one back in 1982. The likes of Danielle Baldelli and chug dons like Andrew Weatherall long favoured it, and if it's good enough for them...

Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was - from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Man Jumping took shape as an attempt to bridge the gap between rock, pop and funk and the minimal "systems music" of Steve Reich, Terry Riley et al. The result is a feast for the ears - all the pomp and splendour of the finest '80s MIDI-powered production interwoven with serious artistic chops, but sequenced and arranged with an almost avant-garde sensibility. Review: Emotional Rescue is at it again with another fully licensed and remastered offering, this time bringing to wax Mataya's Golddigger with a previously digital-only 'tape Mix.' Zimbabwe-born and later London-based Mataya "Clifford" Chewaluza was a core part of the vibrant West London music scene, using his songwriting, production and multi-instrumentalist skills on albums for RCA and Virgin. He also dropped a few 12"s and this one was released in 1988. It's a cult curio with crashing 80s production, disco-tinged grooves and plenty of subtle African rhythm which includes a standout dub mix from Jura Soundsystem.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Ever the educators, Emotional Rescue are now turning their attention to the 90s "Afro-cosmic" scene - a sound that spread through Europe following the influence of Daniele Baldelli and his pioneering DJing in Italy in the late '70s. Munich's The New Morning were amongst the many crews inspired by what Baldelli was championing, and they created incredible, unusual dance music that easily stands up to modern standards for its inventive fusions of global influences and electronic technology. From the heady house throw down "In Japan" to the cosmic dancehall flex of "Jay's Rhama", there's so much to vibe off here, all of it highly compatible with the adventurous sounds creeping into DJ sets in the current era.

On this second installment of spiritually charged, low tempo club killers, you get the chants and percussion of "Riddim Of Inari", tightly looped West African funk of "Mi C'Yaan" and the stunningly evocative "When Will You Come Down?". There's more rolling rhythmic business to be enjoyed on "Picayune" while "Cricket (part II)" amps up the distortion without losing the groove, and then "Ancient Nomads" seals off this volume in style with a slow, hard-slapping beat to get fully entranced too.

Review: The sadly departed Jaki Liebezeit was the kind of drummer whose influence will be continually recognised over the decades to come. Best known for his work in Can, there are also many more sides to this singular sticksman, and Emotional Rescue has chosen to shine a light on his post-Can period living in Stollwerck. On the A side of this 7" curio is the sound of Phantom Band with Linear Johnson & The Protons. "Rush Rush" has a spiky new wave bent to it, but still Liebezeit's drumming stands out. The B side "Drums Off Chaos" need little explanation - it's the sound of one of the all-time drumming greats letting rip in a ferocious blast of percussive abandon.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Having worked with the likes of Don Cherry and Laurie Anderson, there's little doubting the credentials of Ramuntcho Matta. Emotional Rescue have tapped him up for some truly outernational jams that sport African percussion, skronky jazz tones and an engaging minimalism that's hard to resist. The fretless bass and exotic animal cries of "Ecoute" are especially appealing, while the squelchy sound design in "O Clapo" may well do funny things to all who hear it. It's a startlingly original record that serves as a perfect introduction to a lesser known figure in leftfield music with a great heritage behind him.

Review: This collection of ten very classy sounding Balearic pop songs actually consists of unreleased material from 1989-1991, a fact you'd never have guessed from merely listening to it. Brenda is a UK based singer and producer, and during the 80s frontperson of Brenda and the Beachballs (whose 'Theme From A Tall Dark Stranger' makes a return in a new form here), and the palate of influences does revolve around the best the decade had to offer - Grace Jones, ZTT, Roxanne Shante and early St Etienne are all echoed - plus a touch of the plundering DIY sample spirit (see 'Tequila Sam') that also powered that era. Exquisite listening that doesn't let its sophistication distract from a gentle sense if adventure and charm.

Review: The always excellent Emotional Rescue comes to save us all once more with another of its perfectly escapist releases. This particular 7" comes from Silver Leaf, a short-lived mid-80s project out of Cincinnati, Ohio with a mysterious vocalist. The band was discovered by crate diggers on both sides of the Atlantic and now rightfully get brought to our attention with two brilliantly unique tunes. 'Hey!' is lush, synth driven psychedelic disco soul with a spoken word vocal and bendy chords all brimming with sunshine. 'Can We Rebuilt Our City?' then gets fully heartbroken and horizontal.

Review: "Emotional Rescue presents the first ever reissue of Sugar Minott's rare 12" of I Remember Mama. Recorded in Soho in mid-80s London, the Boogie meets Reggae song comes in vocal and instrumental mixes, as well as a wonderfully teasing long Discomix by NAD aka Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).
Having grown up and become a star out of Kingston, JA, with over 50 albums and hundreds of singles for the likes of Studio One and Black Roots labels, the legendary vocalist was a pioneer of the Dancehall and then later Lovers Rock sounds.
Based in London for much of the 1980s, a chance meeting in the Wackies offices he met producer Steve Parr, who had recently opened the Sound Design Studio next door.
Hatching the idea to create a label to showcase their capabilities, Parr played all the instruments except the distinctive sax by friend Andy MacDonald, while Minott's delivery is at his prime, storytelling in the Jamaica tradition of hardship and praise.
Released on 7" and 12", they have striking differences. The "Sound Design" instrumental / version sees the studio team craft a disco meets reggae in a cod-style to wonderful, almost Balearic effect.
The collaboration with Dan Tyler continues, as he again works his desk dubbing magic. Extending and editing between the two mixes, teasing the instrumental before finally bringing the sax and vocals together for a 'discodub' finale. "

Review: REPRESS ALERT! Spearheaded by Stuart Leath, Emotional Rescue is a label committed to unearthing forgotten gems and giving them the exposure they richly deserve, with all releases officially licensed by the artist and remastered in full. This 12" sees two classic tracks by the world music collective Suns of Arqa take pride of place. Incorporating elements of raga and dub, "Brujo Magic" is a much more straightforward dancefloor number than its description would suggest, with its rolling bassline and vocoder effects fusing irresistibly with its psyche-rock styles. On the B-Side, "Ananta Snake Dance" combines traditional Indian percussion and harmonium with conventional drumming to create something completely unique. A strong start to what will no doubt be an indispensable label.

Review: Dropping just three EPs between 1982 and 1987, Takenoko were a true enigma in the heady rush of French new wave. This group from Bordeaux hit all the right notes, fusing choppy indie instrumentation with punchy synth lines and angular vocals - in a parallel universe they could have been huge. Emotional Rescue have done the right thing in bringing together their three EPs for this definitive introduction to a rare and righteous slice of underground arcana. Whether it's the breezy pop stylings of "Elle A Tokyo" or the slow, stomping funk of "Trans Amor Express," Takenoko are a joy to listen to for any new wave devotee.

Review: Emotional Rescue returns to the post war music of West Germany and the work of Dominik Von Senger and his cohorts based around the Dunkelziffer project. This special "Sampler" EP of recordings was produced as their part in Cologne's Stollwerck art complex, that acted as a home and inspiration to their musical experiments. Based within the disused industrial warehouses spaces of Stollwerck, a mix of post-hippies, punks and anarchists created a community within that fed off each other's artistic endeavours. While given space rent free, a requirement for the musicians centered around Dunkelziffer, The Phantom Band and The Unknown Cases, was to provide a collection of music for release on a compilation album to highlight its work. Released in 1985, the "Off Record No.1 Stollwerck Sampler" LP contained a collage of post-punk, krautrock, dub and avant-garde music and here on this special 6 track 12", a condensed Stollwerck Sampler EP is presented some 30 years later. Starting with the almost undiscovered Memo Walk by The Unknown Cases (see EES016), here they eschew their afro-cosmic sound and turn in a deep jazz fusion funk jam that wouldn't look out of place during Miles' "On The Corner" period, except with a krautrock metronomic kick. One of the challenges of this Sampler was what to leave out. The tracks that make up the rest of the EPs first side highlight what the project was really about. The one-off Project X and Dominik Von Senger's wonderful solo piece, Track Of Sample, are the sounds of a collective in full hair down, experimental productions where all is thrown in to the melting pot and see where this goes. The second side is more of the same and could easily of appeared on the Dunkelziffer "Retrospective" (ERC007/8/9) reissues. However, this shouldn't be dismissed lightly. This is mesmeric music that captures a time and place perfectly. Whether Die Art or A.N really ever existed beyond this studio concept is irrelevant. The Stollwerck Sampler EP captures that moment, for this moment.

Review: Glen Velez is perhaps not a household name, but let Emotional Rescue change that with this wonderfully curated collection of works from a masterful drum devotee. Velez has Latin American roots, and he has performed since the late 60s in New York, but his interest in percussion spans the globe and all kinds of hand drums. His respected techniques have been snapped up by collaborators like John Cage and Steve Reich, not least thanks to the advanced polyrhythmic modes he operates in. Don't be fooled though - this isn't just a drum record. Accompanying musicians shape out the hypnotic percussion in a variety of transcendental moods that make this an invigorating listen start to finish.

Review: Following the excellent reissue of Aither last year, Emotional Rescue return to the dreamy, decidedly tripped out sound world of French-Persian outfit Vox Populi! with this enchanting collection of early rarities from the early to mid 80s. There's a range of moods on offer here, sounding very much of the era with dashes of On-U dub colliding with kosmische and the worldly outlook of Byrne, Eno, Hassell et al. It's a varied listen and a wonderful introduction to a band that could have so easily been more widely appreciated if they had managed to break out of the French underground.

The specific period focused on here is the post-1989 sound of the band exploring more explicit world influences with stunning results. Review: Emotional Rescue pulls deep from the esoteric well with the first of several avant albums over the coming year. The self-styled 'Ethno-Industrial' Vox Populi! present their 1989 Aither album, remastered and repackaged with love nearly 30 years later. Initiated by artist Axel Kyrou in 1982, Vox Populi! was soon joined by long term collaborator Pacific 231 on a series of coldwave/industrial cassette only recordings. Things changed considerably, however, with the meeting of the siblings, Mitra and Arach in 1984.The consequential use of 'traditional' instruments and, especially, his wife Mitra's Persian folklore vocals gave a specific tonality, incorporating the band's expanding passion for oriental sounds, electronics and psychedelic music. Involving numerous musicians and friends in often-spontaneous studio sessions, the melting pot of varied cultural backgrounds added ethnic, electronic, concrete music, funk, dub and experimental flavours.This feeling of the subjective absence of the artist was achieved via a communal way for making music, but still with an aim to entertain while leading the listener to experience something unique - mind elevating, non-egotistical, ethereal music - all pushing the intellect towards a more artistic transparency. Review: Emotional Rescue unearth yet another pearl of curiosity from the mists of the 80s here, kicking off a series looking at the work of guitarist Carl Weingarten. This album is a fine place to start, as Weingarten teams up with Walter Whitney for an engrossing exploration of ambient synth work merged with careful use of slide guitar and more besides. It's very much of its time, originally released on Multiphase in 1985, and it's as charming and naive as it is accomplished. There's a new age sweetness to the harmonic composition, but the sound palette is deceptively deep, not least thanks to Weingarten's multifaceted approaches to his instrument. Dreaming In Colours sets a promising tone for what the rest of the series holds.

Review: Clifford White is the kind of 80s curio that Emotional Rescue love so dearly - a bedroom keyboard warrior who happened to catapult to professional studio environs in the blink of an eye. The two tracks pressed up here previously appeared on a 1989 LP in an abridged version - White has returned to both tracks and stretched them out to enhance their playability in the dance. Both "Lifestream" and "Rain Trek" aren't your typical party starters though - rather they're lilting, uplifting synth expressions strapped to a mixable beat. That's exactly why they've been hot property on the Balearic scene for a long time, and now they're available in loud-cut, blissfully extended form for the modern heads to get dreamy to.
