Review: The always cultured Emotional Rescue kicks of the first of what will be a series of reissue sou the music of young Michael Ashley aka Haile Maskel. He hailed from Trenchtown in Jamaica and grew up singing, learning guitar and bass, redoing under the tutelage of Bob Marley early on. Here his soul drenched reggae is offered dup with 'Crazy Kind Of Feeling', a unique track with horns and big bass but also a subtle disco energy. Next to a dub take, Patrick Billard aka DJ Duckcomb serves up a mix that embellishes on the disco elements.

Review: Emotional Rescue dig out a quintessential private press curio and give it a tasteful 7" release that should tickle all lovers of blue-eyed soul with a subtle electronic kink. There's a smooth pop nous at the heart of "Passion", but also a naivety in the production that hints at the bedroom studio roots of 4AM's limited forays into recorded work. There's space for Fairlight-esque stabs and something approaching an acid bassline, but it's all framed in a mellifluous slice of melodious groove. "The Man I Feel" takes the A side and steers it into playful instrumental territory to great effect, the consummate 80s dub out.

Review: Emotional Rescue's trilogy of obscure reggae-disco reissues comes to a close with another killer, this time from former Studio One session man Richard Ace. Those with a passion for the genre will no doubt already know Ace's cheery 1979 cover of "Stayin' Alive". "Jones Town Massacre", though, is arguably even more potent; a rolling, floor-friendly cover of a Prince Tony number full of punchy, rum-soaked horns, jangling pianos, rolling beats and a killer bassline. As with the previous titles in the series, the flipside features an extended contemporary re-edit, with in-house crew Apophenia (AKA boss Stuart 'Chuggy' Leath and Soft Rocks' Piers Harrison) emphasizing the killer groove in a tough, dubwise style.

Review: Emotional Rescue can be relied on to dig up obscure, left of centre dance gems and serve them up to newer, wider audiences. Adu's reggae-pop cut 'Burkina Faso' is a great example, re-purposed for the dancefloor without any of its original flavour lost in the overhaul. A

Review: REPRESS ALERT! Stuart Leath's Emotional Rescue label is returning to the dance in a big way this Spring, with a couple of killer reissues of long forgotten Caribbean disco jams. This first one is, predictably, essential, with former Blue Beat chanteuse Lauren Aitken's 1978 disco-reggae killer "Sexy Boogie" being the centre of attention. Curiously, it was only a B-side first time around, but rightly deserves greater exposure. Aitken is in fine form singing over an undulating disco-reggae groove peppered with sweet guitars and twinkling pianos. Soft Rocks man Piers Harrison gets his scalpel out on the flip, turning original A-side "Hoochie Coochie Man" into a yearning dub disco chugger that largely dispenses with Aitken's vocals.

Review: Emotional Rescue is delighted to announce bringing together two classic Suicide songs reinterpreted by avant-garde pop auteur Angel Corpus Christi. Recorded as part of Angel's personal take on the Downtown NYC scene, this release brings her cover versions of this cult band on one dedicated release for the first time. Singer, songwriter and accordionist, Angel Corpus Christi has carved out a niche all her own, releasing 5 albums and numerous singles that highlight her oft-nonchalant musings over off kilter production and a post-punk-pop aesthetic. Her debut album - "I LOVE NY" was a concept collection celebrating the ground breaking music formed and released in New York during it's pre and post punk heyday of the late 60 to early 80s. Taking in the inspiration from the original punk sounds of the Velvet Underground through to her own re-take of Theme From Taxi Driver, as well as punk standards like Blank Generation, the album has become a cult classic itself. Within this collection though contained two stand-out gems in Angel's covers of Suicide's Cheree and Dream Baby Dream. For some these songs represent the high mark of Alan Vega and Martin Rev's special and ground breaking partnership and in original form have a special place in this label's heart. Featuring no less than Alan Vega on backing vocals, plus life-time partner Bruce Anderson on guitar and produced by Howard Thompson, "I Love Baby" is itself a homage from Emotional Rescue to Suicide and will hopefully be appreciated as a special release in due course.

Review: The super rarity disco funk Something Got A Hold On Me by Chuck Armstrong gets its first ever official reissue, as Emotional Rescue continues its series of looking at some of the artists working with King Sporty's Konduko label.
A long time South Florida native, Armstrong released numerous gospel toned soul 7"s for labels across the US, starting in 1962 with Cleveland's Gemini Records before going on to release with Detroit's Black Rock and Nashville's Sound Stage 7.
First working with Noel Williams on the 1973 single, Black Foxy Woman, before releasing his now sought-after album Shakin' Up in 1976, he returned to Konduko 3 years later to explore the shift to disco and boogie with William's masterly production.
Coming in at 10 minutes of deep, bottom rattling disco funk, William's teamed Armstrong's vocals of hypnotising love with his in-house Root Rockers band to devastating result.
Their unrelenting groove and horns, plus Betty Wright & co's backing vocals counteracting with William's studio skills, is further exemplified in a wonderful dub laden Discomix by Psychemagik.
Having released a sneaky edit a few years ago, it seemed fitting to bring the duo of beat diggers, tape manipulators and world travelling DJs, into the "official" fold by commissioning a new rework that extends, loops and arranges this classic around a nice heavy dose of dub effects for daze.

Review: Betty & The Code Red is a life and creative partnership between Benin-born Tunde Obazee and his girlfriend Betty. The pair grew up in Nigeria and would play all manner of instruments to entertain people at the local school before staying together as they went on to live in Italy and the US. Obazee performed at colleges and universities despite no formal training and eventually recorded a selection of tunes together including a small album on relatively new bits of gear like the Yamaha RX7. Especial has collated some of their best work across two new EPs, this being one of them.

Review: There is always a good backstory to the music that Emotional Rescue releases and this EP is a case in point. It comes from Betty & The Code Red and Betty was the girlfriend of Tunde Obazee, a Nigerian-born artist who used music as a "non-violent tool to express his socio-political opinions on global injustice." The pair would entertain people on campus by playing anything they could get their hands on, informed by the old Edo folk songs they had grown up around. They went on to live in Italy and the US and start a family as well as lay down self-released songs that have become cult classics. A selection of them feature on this, the first of two EPs from the pair.

Review: "Lescudjack" is one of the finest moments in Michael Chapman's epic discography. Originally featured on 1978's "Life On The Ceiling" album, the instrumental track melded the British guitarist's distinctive finger picking style with throbbing synthesizer lines and heavy space rock influences. Famously a favourite of Daniele Baldelli, and a long-standing secret weapon of Kosmiche-minded DJs, Chapman's peerless original version is joined here by a brilliant Lexx edit that subtly extends it into a more dancefloor-friendly version, with a longer opening build-up, a tasty drum break in the original, and a deliciously dubbed-out conclusion.

Three Lewisham friends, Angela Richardson on lead vocals, with Geselle and Janie backing, were active from 1982 to 1990, but are really remembered for the early recordings made with Neville King. Their debut, Everything Is Fine rides the Lovers sound at its peak. Written with One Blood's Lloyd Robinson, with the rest of band of Robinson brothers providing the rhythm section, this is pure South London sound system music.
Recorded again at TMC (Tooting Music Centre) Recording Studios - working alongside the likes of Dillinger, Tradition and New Musik - Everything Is Fine rides a beautiful soul reggae rhythm as Trevor (Drums) and Lloyd (Bass) Robinson set the foundations, while One Blood provide the Dub mix.
A true love's lament, a song of hope, serenity and pure vibes. Label head Chuggy slides behind the mixing desk for an extended Discomix that stretches, loops and dubs the vocal and dub back forth, to close a glimpse at this uniquely British phenomenon, taking reggae closer to it's heart and soul.

Review: This is when reissues feel like they truly do a service to music that would have certainly disappeared into obscurity - Desmond Coke was a gifted musician who sat in on sessions for the On-U Sound label amongst many other places. His sole solo record was a private press job that very nearly blinked out of existence, but Emotional Rescue have been on hand like the diligent diggers they are to rescue his heartfelt, mightily expressive boogie jams from the one dollar bin. Sunny, sweet and soulful, but also with enough depth and punch to stand up to big budget productions of the era, this is a truly wonderful find that will no doubt be a surprise to even seasoned selectors.

Review: The Konduko series features Noel Williams (King Sporty) working with other artists and singers on the label's roster, and continues with the killer boogie 'You're In My Pocket' by Reanna Coleman.
While little is known about Ms Coleman - beyond the fact that she was an R&B singer who was part of Betty Wright's 'Miami Sound' backing troupe - here she is stepping up in front of the mic for a one off release - backed by an esteemed team of writers and producers including the legendary Tommy Stewart.
Stewart's standing in disco history is guaranteed by his classic eponymous solo album, and the boogie classic 'Bump And Hustle Music'. He has also written for the likes of Loleatta Holloway, Tamiko Jones, Mad Dog Department. Fellow writer Julian Chatman was an established composer in his own right, for Salsoul, T.K Disco and AVI Records.
All based in Florida, teaming up with Noel Williams was a logical step. Working with members of Stewart's own band, the marriage can be heard from the first bars. Williams' funk and JA influenced bass is pulled back and a laidback, horn-intersected boogie groove underpins Coleman's warm, gliding lyrics. Now a mega rarity, here it comes in vocal and instrumental, it is backed with the latest Discomix for the label, welcoming back digger, dealer and DJ, Nick The Record to create his own version. Review: a white Mellotron M 400." So starts Klaus Hoffmann of his 40 years love affair with the Mellotron. Moving from Prog-Rock guitarist to Cosmic Disco warrior in a space of a few years, the birth of Cosmic Hoffmann would lead to a number of classic Kosmiche albums through-out the 1980s. Before this though came Space-Disco. Initially recorded in 1978 after endless late night sessions exploring the new realms of this free form electronic music, the first incarnation was recorded live to tape for a failed film project. An uplifting spaced-out synth journey, it was the later reworked version that would go on to become the lost cult classic. With added disco syncopation taking the track into interstellar spheres, it appeared only as a flipside of Cosmic Hoffmann's first and last single, "Weltraumboogie", in 1982. Unfortunately the release did not make much impression at the time but has become highly sought-after for the more leftfield DJ and music lovers in the years since. Now fully licensed and remastered, the inclusion of the unreleased 1978 Original will be only add to the collectors dream.

Review: Argentinian keyboardist Carlos Cutaia has been active since the early 70s, but diggers have long been fawning after his mid-80s LP Orquesta. Fusing catchy pop-rock workouts with truly madcap moments and glued together by lots and lots of synths, it's little wonder that the Emotional Rescue gang were enamoured with the release and resolved to put together a reissue. There is some really adventurous production going on here, with "Juegos Confusos" being particularly flamboyant and "Uranio Enriquecido" ramping up the oddball keys and splashy effects. Meanwhile the likes of "Sensacion Melancolica" nail that slow and seductive synthwave sound impeccably.

Dunkelziffer was formed out of the original sessions that created the classic Phantom Band.
Centred around Dominik Von Senger, Reiner Linke and Helmut Zerlett, the flating line up also
included contributions from Can's Damo Suzuki and Jaki Liebetzeit, as well as The Unknown Cases'
Stefan Kratchen and Reebop Kwaku Baah.
This true "supergroup", over a 6 year period, made 4 ground breaking albums that covered the classic
Krautrock triumphrat of heavy, repetitive drumming, intricate, overlapping melody and sonic intonation,
but added in to the melting pot heavy dub, soul and jazz elements to expand the sound in to the new
decade.

This one is a live boogie jam 'Music In My Mind' with Brooklyn DJ and producer Steve D'Aquisto. He was a regal at The Loft and a friend of Arthur Russell so all that bears out in the music - a loose-limbed disco groove with languid percussion and big vocals. Review: Said to be discovered and championed by a young Daniele Baldelli, this track from 1983 has been defined as a cosmic classic. The work of producer Steve Coe and his partner Sheila Chandra as Monsoon, they combined elements of dub, dance and ethnic music, mainly released through their Indipop label. Review: REPRESS ALERT: As Emotional Rescue continues to deliver the goods for those who love discofied rarities from the 70s and 80s, here comes this EP from Kevin Harrison, originally released in 1982 and worth a pretty penny second hand. It's a wistful, proggy kind of groove that finds Harrison's voice lost in an alien phaser while the live band feel gels with synthesiser parts for a fluid kind of cosmic goodness. There's simply no arguing with the plush melodic wonderment of "Views Of The Rhine", while "Fly" is the jam the party DJs will reach for, not least for its slinky bassline. Amazing.

Review: A connection that perhaps didn't seem obvious at first but makes sense when you think about it, space rock titans get the niche reissue treatment on Emotional Rescue with Chuggy's ever prolific stable picking two deep cuts from the band's frankly intimidating back catalogue. Originally released in 1976 on "Astounding Sounds, Amazing Music", "The Aubergine That Ate Rangoon" and "City Of Lagoons" are both examples of Hawkwind at their cosmic best, and not afraid to hold down a groove either. Alongside the originals, we're also treated to some wild remix versions from wayfaring astral traveler Cherrystones - lucky for us!

Review: Back in 2019, Emotional Rescue began a series where it licensed some all-time favourites, remastered them and pressed them up with new remixes by modern producers. It now draws to a close after many fine instalments with early 80s band The Impossible Dreamers. Their cult 'Spin' arrives here with an epic nine-minute extended reversion that is heavy on the dub and percussion and also an even more dubcentric reprise from regular label artist Dan Tyler of Idjut Boys and Noid fame, her under his NAD guise. There is plenty of raw and raucous rhythm to this 12" that will enliven any dancefloor and round out this series in style.

Review: Here's a record perfectly suited to the Emotional Rescue sphere. International Noise Orchestra was born out of a collaboration between Berliner Ulrich Homberg and Algerian drummer Jol Allouche, first embarked on in the 1980s when they sought to combine 'new technology with old'. The results are wonderfully vibrant, evocative of the era but also packed with open-ended experimentation that sounds fresh more than 30 years later. There's a push and pull between the collaborating parties, but the frisson between cultures and methods is where this record gets its unique groove from, all delivered with a slick 80s cool it's hard to resist.

Review: Emotional Rescue follow up on the excellent first instalment of reissue material from International Noise Orchestra with this second round of visionary curios from the late '80s. The 'Instrumental Muezzin' mix of 'Gimme More Lovin' comes on like Art Of Noise rocking hard at a slow tempo, all Fairlight flex and more plush digi-synth tones than you can shake a shoulder pad at. 'Yeh Naina Yaa Hai' points to the outernational focus of the group with its canny fusion of Indian musical tropes with electronics, all framing Asha Bhosle's peerless vocal. 'Sick Of Love' works wonders with angular time signature explorations and another plunderphonic funk freakout, while 'A Lulu A Bobe Danz' gets into even more virtuoso kitsch deviations. 'Listen To The Earthbeat / The Driving Force' finishes the set with a compelling rhythmic workout accented by underwater surrealism.

Review: REPRESS ALERT! If you read interviews with Stuart Leath, you'll probably be aware of the amount of work he was put into tracking down Trinidadian husband-and-wife team Carl and Carol Jacobs. Some 24 months later, the fruits of his efforts have materialized in this superb reissue of their obscure (and ludicrously hard to find) 1986 electro-calypso gem "Robot Jam". It's one of those records that shouldn't work - it's effectively a fusion of replayed and re-sung bits from records by Santana, Rock Master Scott and Rappin' Duke - but still sounds brilliantly futuristic nearly 30 years after its' initial release. The two-part original is joined on the flip by a brilliantly fitting, echo-laden "re-rub" from Nick The Record and Dan Tyler, better known as one half of the Idjut Boys.

Review: Forever faithfully mining the past to keep your shelves stocked with gems that might have otherwise been consigned to history, Emotional Rescue turn their attention towards Carl & Carol Jacobs' cult slice of early house music, and what a treat it is. "Yonge Street Jam Band" comes in the form of two mixes that serve as impeccable examples of late 80s club music in all its culture spanning glory. The playful sample slicing and triggering of the second mix is the winner, although the vocals on the original version are equally on point if you want a little more soul in the mix. Jonny 5 then steps up on the flip for a bold but measured re-rub that stretches the vibe out for nine minutes of perfect party fodder.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: With just one 7" release to their name in the form of the 1981 release, Jive Baby On A Saturday Night, the cult of The Jellies was possibly accidentally assured with the long lost song being rediscovered by collectors and championed by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore no less. Picked up and reissued by the stellar Trunk Records in 2010, the B-side cut, however, was sadly overlooked. Now Emotional Rescue are proud to license The Conversation and remaster it especially for this rerelease. Based around a simple drum and bass rhythm, interspersed with crowd noise, playful female vocal yelps and sprinkled with dub effects thrown in to the mix and you wouldn't probably think too much would be going for a track that the band put together in the last two hours of their studio time after Jive Baby had been completed. However, what you get is a killer gem of pop-punk-dub oddness that gets your head nodding to its infectious, repetitive rhythm laden with effects. With just this one (perfect) track available for license it seemed only right to hand it over to the in-house production team, Apophenia, to do their increasingly trademark dubbed out reworking, this time in the form of a true, but respectful "Version" for the flip. With both members of The Jellies sadly now living overseas this piece of early '80s British dub as it were, can now be fully treasured for posterity while also, proving a nice little smokers delight.

Review: Emotional Rescue closes out another brilliant year with one final hot drop. This sorting 7" Safari by King Sporty was the artist's first ever single back in 1976. It comes after the label has served up plenty of reissues of the man known as Noel Wiliam's tackle but this one might be the best. It's from his album Deep Reggae Roots and is nice tropical excursion with steamy hits, wooden percussive sounds and funky bass over a low-slung groove and chanting vocals. This one is backed with a special disco mix by Lexx that reworks the tune for more lively moments.

"Haven't Been Funked Enough" is an absolute battering ram of proto electro, staggeringly advanced for its time (it was originally released in 1982). There's also a "Rapstrumental" mix with some life-affirming instructive speech across the jam, but the real icing on the cake is Idjut Boy Nad's wild and ranging "Discomix" on the B side. It's a truly spaced out affair that sounds like it was mixed live on the desk with its rugged FX sends and woozy atmosphere.

Review: The Konduko label was a gem of early 80s Miami groove, playing host to a range of projects from Noel Williams. "Rock Attack" was originally credited to J. Griffith, but resurfaces here on Emotional Rescue with Williams' King Sporty & The Ex Tras billed at the helm. It's a firecracker of a tune, revolving around a stuttering electro bassline and the loosest, funkiest set of drums, sounding fresh as a daisy with a new lick of mastering paint. Meanwhile Faze Action sprinkle a little contemporary magic on the track, making a beautifully tripped out "Discomix" that sounds more like a cosmic dub extravaganza to these ears.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Emotional Rescue's Miami groove revival continues with the latest instalment in their celebration of Konduko Records and the work of Noel 'King Sporty' Williams. Following the stellar "Rock Attack" and "Haven't Been Funked Enough" comes one of the strongest outings from The Ex Tras, "Do You Wanna Dance?" It's everything an early 80s Florida jam should be, all tough electro basslines, limber funk instrumentation and dubby touches in all the right places, not least on the instrumental version. Felix Dickinson comes on board for a "Discomix" that stretches the original out in all the right places for an extended pleasure ride through some of the best dance music to come out of the Sunshine State.

Review: Emotional Rescue's vital Konduko reissue series sadly comes to an end here with a look at the label's final years. In those days it moved away from reggae, disco and boogie towards an enduring electro sound that had a vast and lasting impact on the Miami scene. The biggest tune from that time was when Noel Williams linked with local songwriter Lawrence Dermer aka Der Mer for the track reissued here. 'Fall Out' soon became a hit with its driving electro-funk rhythms. The original sits next to the later Fresh '86" mix as well as a NAD disco mix from Dan Tyler, best known as one of the Idjut Boys. It's an irresistible package of body-popping electro with hooks for days.

Review: Here comes Emotional Rescue and Konduko's last in their series of Noel Williams/King Sporty reissues, this time looking at later electro productions and the hip-hop/boogie influenced 'Sun Country'. Vocals and co-production come from Williams' long-time partner Betty Wright and as well as a vocal and instrumental mix there's a longform remix by Bay Area disco dub stalwarts, 40 Thieves.
By this point in his career, the godfather of Miami Bass had travelled a long way from his Jamaican roots in reggae and soul, paying homage to the warm climbs of the Sunshine State and laying down a much copied template using the TR-808 drum machine create the electronic emulations of the breakbeat, claps accenting the backbeat and trademark low frequencies shaking the floorboards. The instrumental stretches the arrangement, emphasising the interplay between electronics, bass, vocal samples, scratching and fx, the voice transformed into a percussive element in its own right. The flip sees 40 Thieves flexing their understated understanding of electro funk, making for a rounded, generation-jumping package.

Review: Emotional Rescue returns with the third (and final?) King Sporty & The Ex Tras releases with the first ever-official reissue of the highly sought after cult boogie jam Do You Wanna Dance? Coming as remastered vocal and instrumental, plus again featuring a special Discomix, this time courtesy of acid-disco slayer Felix Dickinson.
Appearing shortly after the success of the band's only album, Extra Funky, Do You Wanna Dance? pointed the way forward, moving further from Disco and closer to the rising electro-boogie sounds that were sweeping the dance floors. The confident up / jump electro drum programming, slap bass and trademark Sporty guitar chops are propelled by a monster swamp inducing synth arpeggio that sings the funk electric, while hip-hop-shout-outs ride the rhythm. If the vocals are too much for some, then the original Instrumental (dub) is also included for those just wanting that infectious groove.

Review: The last of the Konduko series from Emotional Rescue arrives now and quite possibly it is the best of the lot from Noel Williams. His 'Fantasy' saw him work with Larry Dermer aka Der Mer on what is an effective and catchy electro jam that operates at the higher end of the tempo chart with some classic vocoder vocal action to really make it pop. Despite being released originally in 1984 this one still bangs with its emulated TR-808 beats and nagging melodies. The instrumental heightens that and then the Jonny Rock Discomix shuts down with long-form rework that shows why the DJ, editor and all-round amiable bloke is so well regarded.

Review: King Sporty is something of a chameleonic artists, not that many people know. He started out int he 70s making reggae and soul 7"s, then moved into disco, boogie, hip-hop and electro 12"s during the 80s, and then when house music hit in the 90s he evolved once more. This new drop from Emotional Rescue takes a tune from that late era. 'Computer Music' is four to the floor with electro influences and a lazy break that pull you in deep. Far-sighted chords bring a serene sense of cosmic majesty while a filtered vocal adds space age vibes. A dub is included as well as the Universal Cave Discomix by the Philadelphia DJ and production crew. A retro-future EP indeed..

Review: Thomas Leer was mainly active in the late 70s and early 80s, dropping two singles on Cherry Red that provided the source material for the two original tracks on this Emotional Rescue reissue 12". Opener "Saving Grace" is a rich, bombastic blast of synthwave, all chugging arps and massive leads, while "Tight As A Drum" heads into more psychedelic territory, using strange gating techniques and deft FX to create a wondrous, shimmering bed for Leer's poetic chat over the top. Bringing an inventive angle to the release, the label signed Bullion up for two wonderfully warm, wobbly remixes. Honing in on the weirder qualities of Leer's work, these modern interpretations make a perfect bridge from the old to the new - highly recommended!
