Review: Uwe Zahn is back. The German producer behind the legendary album Tides on City Centre Offices created one of the most seminal IDM albums ever but has kept mainly a low profile since but still releasing rather steadily since. This new one on Kenneth Christiansen's Echocord imprint sees a fitting home for his dub inflected experiments this time around. Starting out with the functional and textured "Modul 1", "Modul 5" is very reminiscent of legends like Maurizio and Fluxion (who indeed pushed for this very release apparently), while the ring modulating Arctic textures of "Module 4" are completely mesmerising and sublime. The master returns.

Review: Conforce's Silent Harbour project has been relatively dormant since its inception in 2012, awakening only once with an album for Deep Sound Channel, back in 2015. It's clear that this is a space in which Boris Bunnik's mind can travel and expand, allowing him to roam more freely on the LP format. In fact, this new album for Denmark's Echocord, Noctiluca, is a sparse and explorative piece of work that sees the artist go way deeper than any of his work under the multitude of aliases through which he releases music. Using dub techno as the main ingredient, these six experiments go from the very abstract to the very concrete, jumping between ambient and techno on a constant basis. While the album's cold exterior helps the tracks to portray a strong sense of melancholia, there is something warm and alluring about its sounds and how they mould into one another. In all honesty, it's dub-techno like we've never heard it before. More Silent Harbour, please...

Vampire (dub)
Review:  Deadbeat, aka producer Scott Monteith does a neat trick with this two-track release. The A-side "Vampire" is a beautifully layered Minimal tune that shows off Deadbeat's abilities as a producer to the max, using some beautiful ambient atmospherics to conjure up a unique dreamscape. The Vampire Dub on the other hand is a half-speed, 60bpm version of the original that not only captures the unique drum sounds of a bonafide 70's dub-plate, it also makes for an interesting set closer or great transition record too. Fans of minimal tech should be looking forward to getting their teeth stuck in.

Closing Motif (Luke Hess remix) (6:36)
Review: Dub techno black magic from London's El Choop here. This latest EP 'Closing Motif' sounds rather like what would have happened to Rhythm & Sound's music if their gear had been swapped out with alien technology. Opting for hi-fi sonics while indulging in an unabashed mould-breaking not normally found in the comparatively functional genre, opener 'Faith' is super light on the cutoff filter, with its lead line dominating a pressurized, tinnitussy mix. It's one of the brightest dub techno tracks we've ever heard. From there, we're plugged back into depth, with bits like 'Closing Motif' going for a catchy low melody line, not to mention the space-reverbed 808s cropping up on the steller Luke Hess remix.

Insane Sends (Sven Angelic Sends mix) (6:24)
Review: The mighty Echochord label out of Denmark keeps id deliciously deep once again here with a new one from London based Harvey Bones, aka El Choop that is backed by a remix from Sven Weisemann. 'Insane Sends' straddles deep house and dub techno perfectly, with static sounds fizzing over the surface of the tight, icy synths while the drums roll deep. It's perfectly produced stuff before 'Some Fall Harder Than Others' sinks even deeper into an oceanic abyss on puddles of synth and deeply buried kicks that pulse beautifully. Sven's mix completes this terrific dub triptych.

Review: Kenneth Christiansen's Echocord imprint presents a tight package that includes two of the best tracks taken off Fluxion's Prefused album from earlier this year, plus a dynamic remix of the title track from Deadbeat. "Perfuse" is a gently rolling, dub-techno masterpiece, while "Wabbler" looks back to the early influences of dub in a more unassuming manner. Finishing the package is Deatbeat's up-tempo version of "Perfuse", which sees the Canadian deliver a driving charge of dub-techno that pushes a fluid groove to the fore.

Review: Kenneth Christiansen’s Echocord imprint presents a tight package that includes two of the best tracks taken off Fluxion’s Prefused album from earlier this year, plus a dynamic remix of the title track from Deadbeat.

Following several years on hiatus, Fluxion has returned with a flurry of releases since 2009. Prefused was Konstantinos Soublis’ second album in as many years and cemented his reputation for making ice cool dub-techno. Gaining praise as a collection of his most varied and vibrant tracks to date, the album found a new buoyancy and reduction of shadowy textures within his sound. Now, Echochord revisit the album’s sound in a concise package.

"Perfuse" is a gently rolling, dub-techno masterpiece. It is a slow and pulsating track where the sound patterns emerge steadily into one huge organic movement. The sub bass is as deep as you can possibly go and each synth stab arrives with might and vigour. The Jamaican styled dub reggae of "Wabbler" looks back to the early influences of dub in this more unassuming track. It is a live track, recorded in only one take but still contains the depth of texture that is always present in Fluxion’s work. Finishing the package is Deatbeat’s up-tempo version of "Perfuse." The Canadian delivers a driving charge of dub-techno that pushes a fluid groove to the forefront of the track. With some intelligent spatial arrangements, this is one for connoisseurs of either dub or techno.

Signalling a new domain for who is an extremely interesting artist, "Perfuse’s" bending, turning and blending in the Greek’s unique style is complemented perfectly by Deadbeat’s grooving at the end of the package. Perfused is Fluxion moving into the future with his own steady, dub-techno beats

Review: Greek Dub techno artist Fluxion returns to Echochord here with Broadwalk Tales, a fifth studio album of a storied career and third for the respected Danish label. It's been nice to see an artist and label develop a working relationship in the manner that Konstantinos Soublis has with Echochord over the course of those aforementioned albums and a clutch of 12"s and the Greek producer evidently feels comfortable enough to play with the confines of the dub techno sound. A press release for Broadwalk Tales has Soublis stating he "wanted to make something more than the usual dub techno tracks, with a hint of manipulated voices every now and then" and the collection is notable for the number of tracks featuring Jamaican vocalist Teddy Selassie. Fluxion fans will love this.

Review: For all its inherent warmth and space, dub techno can be a cold and, at times, almost inhuman in feel. That's certainly not an allegation you can level at Fluxion, a producer whose dub techno offerings tend towards the quietly sunny and surprisingly upbeat. While this second full-length for Echochord has moments of icy minimalism - see the stark "Burst Mode (Edit)" and beatless closer "Motion 2" - its shot through with orange-hued warmth. His hypnotic compositions are peppered with woozy melodies, toasty sounds, twinkling pianos and even, on occasion, the odd vocal (see the fine cover of "No Man Is An Island" featuring a previously unreleased vocal from sadly-departed reggae legend Dennis Brown).

You Don't Know (Joey Anderson remix)
For You (Deepchord reconstruction 1)
For You (Deepchord reconstruction 2)
Review: To date Fluxion, AKA Greek dub techno artist Konstantinos Soublis, has released three albums on Danish imprint Echocord, settling in nicely alongside the likes of Luke Hess, Deadbeat, STL, Conforce and XDB. Kenneth Christiansen's label revisits the most recent Soublis long player, Broadwalk Tales which arrived back in April, for a remix 12" packing some high calibre names in Deepchord and Joey Anderson. In the hands of the highly regarded Anderson, "You Don't Know" is transformed from its vaporous origins into a slab of typically deep and jacking Jersey house, while Rod Modell naturally opts for fading resonance and cloudy white noise in his two DeepChord variations of "For You".

En Route (7:51)
The Place (7:29)
Flick (3:47)
Review: Along with artists like Porter Ricks, Substance, Monolake, Matrix, Vainqueur, and many other Chain Reaction luminaries, Greece's Fluxion has helped to shape and define what we now gratuitously refer to as 'dub techno'. Not surprisingly, he comes through on Denmark's Echocord, an imprint which has openly embraced this man's culture, and is perhaps responsible for the only credible dub techno on the scene, as of today. "En Route" is a near 8 minute voyage through cavernous waves of echoing bass and glitchy percussion magic, travelling at a steady techno pace that has the illusion of sounding slow and controlled. The B-side kicks off with "The Place", a more housey affair with that familiar dubwise glow, while "Flick" truly heads out West, dissipating its beat structure in favour of a malleable, shape-shifting cloud of harmonics that form structure and direction - what Fluxion has always been best at.

Parallel Space (Conforce remix) (8:01)
Review: Renowned since his Livity Sound days for delivering complex rhythms, heavy basslines and intricate electronics, Forest Drive West pitches up on Echochord with a deliciously spaced-out EP that explores the dub techno side of his multi-faceted musical persona. He eases us in gently via head-in-the-clouds opener "Creation Dub", a hypnotic, eyes-closed affair rich in slow broken techno rhythms and echoing Deepchord synths, before delivering the sparse, minimalist dub techno fuzz of "Drift". Side B is all about "Parallel Space", with Forest Drive West's metallic, Livity Sound-esque original mix - think broken techno meets dub techno - being paired with a Conforce remix that re-imagines it as an ear-pleasing slice of rolling dub techno positivity.

100m (7:51)
Recursion (8:00)
Anchor (7:41)
Review: Joe Baker's productions as Forest Drive West frequently take techno in interesting new directions, though he's not averse to dropping ultra-deep exercises in dancefloor immersion from time to time. That's exactly what's on offer on Baker's first EP for Echochord in three years. A-side '100m' is paranoid, intoxicating and softly spoken, with foreboding, echoing electronic riffs rising above moody aural textures and shuffling, minimalistic, polyrhythmic beats. Title track 'Recursion' is more ghostly, opaque and hypnotic - a future after-hours classic, perhaps - while closing cut 'Anchor' is a deliciously dubbed-out, sunrise-ready affair that sits somewhere between ambient dub, IDM and ultra-deep broken techno. In other words, it's another terrific EP from techno's man of the moment.

Debris Disk (16:47)

Quantum Corrections (9:31)
Review: It sounds like Lithuanian producer Grad U has found his natural home on Echocord. The Danish imprint has been one of the most distinctive platforms in dub techno and Space Explorations fits right in to its brief. "Debris Disk" starts the release with an ominous, mid-tempo groove and splintered hats, reminiscent of Dimension 5. "Hydrogen Reactor" is more functional, with cheese wire percussion mixed with tough but resonant kicks. However, it sounds like Grad U's comfort zone is a more esoteric place and the spacey chords and billowing textures of "Quantum Corrections" is a beautifully measured, reflective affair.

Review: Dub techno specialist Idealist returns to Danish imprint Echocord, following up last year's brilliant Source EP. Mind Field is the enigmatic producer's second full length offering (after 2016's Firewood Road on his own Idealistmusic) and it showcases a great evolution of his sound. With the exception of opener "Explorer", a powerful, emotive and hands in the air house stomper, and the austere factory floor stomp of "Smoke & Mirrors" - the rest of the EP remains in the cavernous and glacial realm you've come to expect from the Swiss producer. A collection of deeply emotive and reductive versions, where warm yet forceful bass frequencies roll along a ghostly trail of reverb and echo.

Flow (8:06)
Nucleus (7:47)
Accumbens (6:19)
Review: Zurich producer and DJ, Idealist, has been quietly churning out magnetic shades of house and dub techno since 2012. Through his own Idealistmusic, along with a number of other below-radar imprints, we have been graced by a gentle yet penetrative sound that recalls the very best of the 90s Berlin scene. So much so, in fact, that he's been called upon by the excellent Echochord label to run the dub techno slayings across three cuts. "Flow" is a powerful, direct slice of techno that fades its deep basslines and synths out into the ether, producing a hypnotic effect that we're big fans of. On the flip, "Nucleus" slows the pace down but doesn't hold back on those prototypical dub chords in what makes for a real 3am kinda lick, while "Accumbens" pokes its head out of the depths and produces a tight drum roll backed by soothing, meditative synths. Class.

Akari (Quantec remix) (6:31)
Review: Matthias Kaden's first full-length as Mathmidori, 2020's Akebono on Echochord, brilliantly joined the dots between dub techno, ambient techno, and more immersive, intergalactic techno fare. There's a similar feel to this excellent collection of fresh remixes. The opening Deadbeat dub of 'Maiia' is a wonderfully wonky dub techno workout built around an echoing, off-kilter rhythm track, while the FDF Reshape of 'Soso' is an ultra-deep affair that's arguably closer in tone to ambient dub (and early Rhythm and Sound records) than contemporary dub techno. Elsewhere, Rod Modell takes us even deeper via a weightless, pulsing inversion of 'Ork', while Quantec adds a locked-in, late-night feel to another dub techno workout, 'Atari'.

Review: As many of you will be aware, Mathimidori is not an obscure Japanese producer, but rather the occasional alias used by German studio buff Mathias Kaden for his more dub-fuelled techno releases. Akeboni is his first album under the alias and arrives on translucent red vinyl following the release of a handful of admired EPs over the last nine years. For the most part, it's a lazy and hazy affair, with Kaden contrasting the stoned, spaced-out warmth of 'Maiia', 'Ork' and 'Soso' with darker explorations such as 'Asaka' and 'Shao'. To keep things varied, the set also boasts a number of collaborations, a handful of downtempio dub workouts and a mostly ambient -and suitably atmospheric - closing cut.

Review: The dub techno dons at Echocord welcome Mathimidori to the ranks with this new 12" featuring two origins and a remix from New York's Levon Vincent. 'Anata' kicks off in mid-tempo fashion with rolling chords and cuddly-deep drums that are doused in lo-fi vinyl crackle. 'Zanziba' staggers and stumbles on a more rickety rhythm with static electricity passing over the top and oceans of reverb below. The whole of the flip is taken up by 'Zanziba' (Levon Vincent remix) which is epic, elegant and expansive and showcases the sort of fine synth craft Vincent has excelled at all of his career.
