Thin Air (12")
Cat: 116 DSR. Rel: 25 Apr 16
Techno
  1. Thin Air (7:28)
  2. I Repeat (6:06)
  3. All Out (8:03)
  4. Waybackmachine (5:58)
Review: A Made Up Sound man Dave Huismans is not messing around on this 12", his first outing on Delsin for six years. Opener "Thin Air" may contain creepy melodies, strange samples and curious orchestral samples, but these largely play second fiddle to a booming techno rhythm. "All Out" and "Waybackmachine" also hit home hard, with trademark rhythmic madness and densely layered chords combining to create two hectic and intense broken techno smashers. Even the EP's most laidback moment, the noticeably deeper "I Repeat", owes its' power to a surging sub-bass line and some snappy post-dubstep rhythms, rather than its' faintly unsettling electronics and melancholic musical elements.

Review: Over the last two decades, few electronica producers have amassed as impressive a discography as John Beltran. Whether crafting becalmed ambient pieces, evocative IDM tracks, or atmospheric dancefloor shufflers, the veteran producer always infuses his work with an atmospheric sense of time and place. Everything At Once, his speedy follow-up to last year's Espais, is another master class in delivering emotion-rich electronic music. Highlights abound, from the glistening, Artificial Intelligence-era Warp Records IDM of "Sinem", and droning mood-piece "Gentle Boxes", to the pitched-down rush of "Tanzmuzik" and future ambient jazz classic "Dream Lover".

Review: Since adopting the BNJMN guise, UK producer Ben Thomas has graced a fairly impressive list of labels with his intricately sculpted brand of techno, and there's a definite sense that his best work is done when aligned with a Dutch label. After all, it was Rush Hour's excellent Direct Current series that brought BNJMN to wider attention with the classic Plastic World album from 2011. Having previously contributed a production to Delsin's 100DSR compilation series last year, the now Berlin-based BNJMN is granted a debut proper with the six track EP Coil. Spend some time with the EP and you'll come to the conclusion it's a confident assessment of everything BNJMN is capable of producing, with the pulsing, mind bending techno of the title track followed by more contemplative moments and some good old fashioned wall shakers.

Review: BNJMN rose to prominence as a house producer with those LPs for Rush Hour's Direct Current series, but this mini-album for Delsin sees him straying further down an experimental path than before. "P-Tr" is a cold, glacial bleep techno cut, while "Womb" sees him lay down a linear, heads-down groove. Elsewhere, he departs from the dance floor as he displays eloquently on the noisy tones of "1987" and the tranced out, classical melodies of "Oder". But BNJMN remains a dance floor producer at heart and nowhere is this more audible on "Microgravity". A rumbling, gritty workout, it connects his house heritage with his experimental techno present.

Review: For those who follow the work of British IDM legend Claro Intelecto, the last few years have been frustrating, to say the least. It's been five years since his last album, and three since he released a 12" single. Exhilarator, his fifth full-length, is certainly well over-due. Predictably, the triple vinyl set - pressed in limited quantities on "splatter vinyl" - is also rather good. As usual, it offers a superb balance of dark and intoxicating electro, tuneful intelligent techno, bubbly IDM, glitchy post-ambient soundscapes, deep and bass-heavy techno shufflers and clanking, off kilter experimentation from the Autehcre school of electronica. It's atmospheric, impeccably produced and stuffed full of highlights. In other words, it's another great Claro Intelecto album.

Review: Boris Bunnik's debut under the Conforce moniker, Machine Conspiracy, was a little overlooked on its release back in 2011. Since then, the album has gone on to be regarded as something of a slept-on classic - a gorgeously picturesque, far-sighted and spacey trip into late night electronica shot through with dub techno and Drexciyan electro influences. Given that original copies of the album - either on CD or wax - are now fairly hard to find, it's nice to see Delsin making the album available again. Happily, the album has lost none of its' allure in the four years since, with the deep techno throb of "Subtraction", fluid hypnotism of "Machine Conspiracy" and Larry Heard-ish "Love Hate" remaining amongst Bunnik's strongest works.

Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from Boris Bunnik's Conforce project; after all, this is the shape-shifting producer's fifth album under the pseudonym in just under seven years. Like previous full-length Conforce excursions, Autonomous looks to the "intelligent techno" era (think mid-to-late '90s) for inspiration, serving up a range of spacey, inter-dimensional tracks that variously doff a cap to the Black Dog, the angular rhythms of Autechre, otherworldly deep techno, crystalline IDM, Drexciyan IDM and the outer-space brilliance of B12. Interestingly, there are a few more dense and creepy techno club tracks than we've come to expect, but even these tend towards to spacey and out-there.
