Melancholic, hypnotic and playful in equal measure, this quintessential slice of coldwave goth rock is a classic forgotten to time, and now that vacant, pining spot on your shelf can be fulfilled without taking out a mortgage for an original pressing flipped to high heaven. Review: A highly collectible splatter 12" vinyl of this Martin Hannett-produced session groundbreaking gothic/post-punk band, Joy Division. Includes the band's best known composition 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and a superb non-album B-side in 'Leaders Of Men', plus an extended mix of the A-side. Most music fans and their mothers will have had the former track firmly implanted into their grey matter by now, but it's the B-side that really gets the true-heads going, channelling a massive, cortex-cracking sound that is closer to punk than post. Boy, did Joy Division have a toothy side.

Review: Ministry were a very different band in 1982, when Al Jourgensen started out as a synth pop provocateur straining at the leash to take things darker. He has repeatedly sworn off their debut album With Sympathy as a sanitised version of the sound he was pursuing, and this collection of live recordings from the year before it was released show a sharper edge to tracks like 'Revenge' and 'Effegy'. It's still absolutely synth-pop of the era, when the music was only one step removed from post-punk anyway, but most importantly the sound is clear and bright, showing the first iteration of the band at their best and playing close to home.

Review: Currently back at full activity, and most recently releasing their latest album Il Tradimento Silenzioso (The Silent Betrayal) in 2022, Manchester punk pioneers Slaughter & The Dogs first made their name through their connections to former Joy Division manager Rob Gretton, while their opening slot for the Sex Pistols in Manchester on July 20, 1976 (the second of their two Free Tree Hall shows within two months) played a hand in expanding the city's punk movement before extending to a UK-wide phenomenon. Originally released in 1980, Bite Back served as the feral follow up to the band's quintessential 1978 debut full-length Do It Dog Style, and continued their blistering run of playfully chaotic anthems. Review: As part of a large and comprehensive reissues campaign of the work of both horror-punk pioneers Misfits and their most eminent creative brain Glenn Danzig, this reissue of Danzig's Black Aria should be of special note. Danzig's first ever album as a solo artist following prior forays into everything from punk to metal to industrial, it was first released in 1992, again breaking away from prior genre explorations. This time, Danzig would focus his efforts on contemporary, gothic-metallic classical music - though it's largely an instrumental album, Black Aria deals thematically with the Biblical fall from grace undergone by Lucifer, after which grace and sin were implied to have became confused, and hell on earth unleashed.

Long regarded as not only one of the best albums of the band's stellar catalog but also one of the most groundbreaking musical achievements of the 80s, Chrome's debut album influenced a generation of electronic, post-rock and experimental artists, predicting and inspiring the many thought-to-be-inventors of the sound(s), such as Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson. This version includes an entire bonus LP of rare "lost tracks", recorded in the same year as the originals. By far the most arresting cuts include 'Eyes On Mars' and 'Static Gravity', which effortlessly flaunt the band's melding of seemingly contradictory poles: the double-time groove of post-punk and the halfstep pace of dub, echoing the dizzying variety of influences that went into this electric, feline, crepulscular album.

Review: Leather Strip is the nom de plume of Danish artist Claus Larsen, who first rose to prominence in the EBM and industrial boom of the early 90s. Science For The Satanic Citizen was one of his earliest releases, originally out in 1990 and featuring such cheery titles as 'Zyklon B' and 'What's Hell Really Like?' The music isn't as forbidding as the presentation might seem, coming on like the Ministry and Nine Inch Nails sound of the era when the focus was on gothic synth lines and slamming drum machines, but not quite the sheet metal distortion that would become de rigour further into the 90s.

Review: Ahead of their time? Ruined by excess and ego? A difficult act to market? New York Dolls are one of those stories about the fickle nature of industry and listeners, and the risks of hedonism. Emerging from The Big Apple in 1971, the group had a thoroughly modern sound for the time, combining hard and what was then a very fresh glam rock sound with early punk prototypes, years before people would learn what that means. New York Dolls was the spectacular self-titled debut from the band, put out by Mercury in 1973. Although a commercial failure, it's often cited among the greatest rock 'n' roll records of all time, but despite critical success it did little outside the US, where sales weren't great as it was, and the outfit would only last another few years - with various lineup changes - before calling time. This rare release charts what came before all that, including collector's item demos from their time playing as Actress.
