Review: Some four years after Swims brought the work of Dan Snaith to the attention of a whole new audience, the London-based Canadian artist returns with a sixth Caribou album entitled Our Love. Staunch followers of Caribou will know that Snaith tends to adopt different sonic approaches with every long player (compare the psychedelia of Up In Flames with the more spaced out Andorra) but this latest album feels like a natural development of the club influenced sounds of Swims. City Slang call it Snaith's most soulful set yet, and that's certainly helped by the presence of compatriot Jessy Lanza, and like all Caribou albums there is something new that appeals with every listen.

Review: It's quite shocking it's been six years since the last Caribou album, 2014's knockout "Our Love". Dan Snaith has never felt the need to rush his music out, and there was an interim Daphni album in 2017 to be fair to the guy, but here we are with a new set that sees Snaith returning to a little of the delicate songwriting and winsome electronica he forged his reputation on in the early days. There's a lot going on in here, from smooth as silk yacht rock-isms to deliriously modernist cut ups and more than a few wild pitch shifts to keep listeners on their toes. It's playful and heartfelt, and rarely lingers in one place for too long while still retaining a sense of calm. It may be not at all what you expected from Caribou's return, but we'd wager it's even better than you hoped.

  1. Never Come Back (Floating Points remix) (9:00)
  2. Sister (Floating Points remix) (7:07)
Review: Having already seen his synth-pop-meets-piano-house gem "Never Come Back" successfully remixed by Four Tet and Morgan Geist, Dan "Caribou" Snaith has now handed over the parts to Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. While those versions retained the core elements of Snaith's warm and ear-pleasing original mix, Shepherd has chosen to re-imagine it as the kind of positive, spacey, musically detailed and rushing late night deep house jam with which he originally made his name a decade ago. It has serious sub-bass weight, too, and is one of his most impressive club-focused outings for some time. It's worth buying the 12" for that mix alone, but his wonderfully deep, sub-heavy, garage-influenced rework of another "Suddenly" album track, "Sister", is also superb. In other words, you need this in your life.

  2. Never Come Back (Morgan Geist remix) (7:25)
Review: When Caribou, Four Tet and Morgan Geist appear on the same 12", you know it's going to be huge. And it is. First up, Kieran Hebdan takes "Never Come Back" and warps the bass, builds plenty of tense percussive energy and layers in some sci-fi synths that take the track into the next dimension. It's epic, as is always the way with Hebden, and ripe for some rave reactions. Cult neo-disco innovator Morgan Geist does something completely different - his drums skip and ping, with a breathy and soul drenched vocal next to lush cosmic chords. It's bouncy, playful, brilliant.

Review: Turkish synth pop pride Jakuzi land a major record deal with the always trustworthy City Slang. Debuting in 2017 with the indie pop Fantezi Muzik LP, the trio, straight out of Istanbul's yet to be mined alternative pop scene, sees the group this time around deliver something that's slightly darker than before. Darker in the sense, that is, that their music now sounds more like Depeche Mode and The Sisters of Mercy, or even These New Puritans, than the sun-catching sounds of their previous release. Gothic tendencies to their instrumentalisation remain throughout the LP, and dark disco plays a part too alongside strands of post-punk guitars that all coalesse into a LP that will no doubt appeal to the shadier realms of pop and synth music lovers.

Review: Some bands just can't be kept down, not that we'd want to try so the point is perhaps hard to prove. Self-doubt aside, Nada Surf are one of those groups, veterans of the Brooklyn indie rock scene that don't seem to have a bad album in them, "Never Not Together" is their glorious ninth, and it's just as powerful, optimistic yet reflective as ever.

Throughout their oeuvre the outfit have always felt as though they were in search of something, not that there are any sonic elements missing. Here again we can't help but feel a tangible yearning, that speaks to our hearts and feet as one. The propellant rhythm but sparse instrumentation on "So Much Love", the evolution of "Mathilda" from humble intro to full-throttle riff march are just two examples that invoke a sense of journey, which sounds so good. As such here's hoping they never reach that destination.

Review: Jessica Pratt's third solo album is a blessing from the start, with opener, "Opening Night", setting the album's tone as a sojourn through a fresh but solemn memory, like strolling through a mist swept pasture. With Pratt's unique vocal ranging tied up in a mix of space, crackle and forgotten reverie, her vocals at times sounding as if they're lost somewhere in a wireless ether. With softly played chords and delicate strumming sitting in tune with dreamy interludes and folky motifs, City Slang have arguably dropped their best record for 2019 first.

Review: The most recent entry in the storied CV of London-born Sudanese musician Ahmed Gallab has been a stint heading up the Atomic Bomb! band, whose role is to reinterpret the work of celebrated Afro-funk pioneer William Onyeabor. It's been a tenure that's had a marked impression on his new sixth record as Sinkane, on which cheerful disposition and rhythmic drive combine to offer a collection of uplifting songs that hark back to the funk and soul of the '70s and '80s with rare zeal and freshness. Replete with fizzing synths, brass and his rich falsetto, 'Life & Livin' It' is the moment that this longstanding sideman finds himself ready for his close-up.

Review: London's krautrock, prog, electronica, free jazz and funk rock fusion specialist returns with his fourth full length for the mighty City Slang! "Depayse" remains fully laced with Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab's subtle Sudanese flair, singing praises and the word of love in "Everyone". The title track sees ambient jazz percussion give a giant runway for a massive guitar solo to take flight while album closer "Mango" delivers something of a West London-Caribbean vibe. In between is an album full of dips and climbs through the hill tops of a sunny afternoon somewhere in the feel-good malaise of Sinkane's multi-instrumental talents.

Review: Now as ever, Tindersticks continue to operate in their own beguiling headspace, and the twilit ambience of this ornately arranged elventh album is proof positive that their gentle magic shows no signs of abating. As ever channeling the bedsit melancholia of Leonard Cohen and the arrangement acumen of John Barry, yet with a deftness of touch that could come from no other band, the Nottingham troubadours conjure up their trademark careworn ambience, romantic languor and emotional pull, dealing out a collection of affecting yet understated vignettes that are liable to haunt the listener's waking hours and beyond

Review: If you're a fan of Antony and the Johnsons then Tindersticks should be familiar by now. Or at least Stuart Staples' voice should be, even if you've never come across the band before. But whereas Antony et al exist in a flamboyant queer disco cabaret, this lot occupy a place far less counter cultural, much sweeter and more tender. "No Treasure No Hope" a string-infused, piano-focussed chamber pop declaration of sweet nothings, both for those who are still with us and those who have come and gone. And it's not all romance. Comparisons are made between father's relationship with son and relationship with his own father ("The Old Man's Gait"). Tears falling into beers ("Trees Fall"). And delightful, innocent worlds are presented via songs like "The Amputees". Back on fine, late-night dark barroom form, it's the finest Tindersticks have given us in years.

Following a longplayer this year from Calexico outta Tucson, White Denim bring the sound of Austin to the label by delivering their ninth long player in ten years. Like the artwork of performance, the music is a colourful montage that brings together saxxy jazz, mellow tropicana and distorted garage to psych rock and pop, with melancholic vocals only adding to its unique cross section of colours. A highlight for us is the '70s Biker rock of "It Might Get Dark" and finger snappin', vibrato heavy "Moves On".
