Bowls (Holden remix)
Review: Ahead of his massively popular third album under the Caribou alias, Dan Snaith was quite generous in his praise for James Holden and regularly explained in interviews how Swim was influenced musically by the music on his Border Community imprint. It's seems natural then that Holden would be called on to provide a remix of "Bowls" which is quite rightly bound to get draped in words such as epic, grandiose and colossal. Taking up nearly all the blackness on the B Side, Holden crafts an 11 minute reimagination which rivals his legendary Nathan Fake remix for all round awesomeness. Taking elements of the already distinctive original, Holden twists and moulds them into a kaleidoscopic pattern of sounds which transcends genre pigeon holing.

Review: It's quite shocking it's been six years since the last Caribou album, 2014's knockout "Our Love". Dan Snaith has never felt the need to rush his music out, and there was an interim Daphni album in 2017 to be fair to the guy, but here we are with a new set that sees Snaith returning to a little of the delicate songwriting and winsome electronica he forged his reputation on in the early days. There's a lot going on in here, from smooth as silk yacht rock-isms to deliriously modernist cut ups and more than a few wild pitch shifts to keep listeners on their toes. It's playful and heartfelt, and rarely lingers in one place for too long while still retaining a sense of calm. It may be not at all what you expected from Caribou's return, but we'd wager it's even better than you hoped.

Review: Contrary to what many may have initially suspected of Kurt Wagner when he first arrived on the scene some twenty years ago, his rootsy demeanour and country-tinged melancholy have always been tempered by sly innovation and a restless spirit. His main departure thus far may have been the soul-tinged 'Nixon', yet 'Flotus' - taking on board electronic textures and vocoder-enhanced melody of no little beauty - is proof that his experiments have paid off. These soundscapes may be the most melancholy and affecting this wry and unique songsmith has created yet, quietly beating Radiohead and Bon Iver at their own game with style and restraint to spare.

Ride In The Unknown
Review: Some bands just can't be kept down, not that we'd want to try so the point is perhaps hard to prove. Self-doubt aside, Nada Surf are one of those groups, veterans of the Brooklyn indie rock scene that don't seem to have a bad album in them, "Never Not Together" is their glorious ninth, and it's just as powerful, optimistic yet reflective as ever.

Throughout their oeuvre the outfit have always felt as though they were in search of something, not that there are any sonic elements missing. Here again we can't help but feel a tangible yearning, that speaks to our hearts and feet as one. The propellant rhythm but sparse instrumentation on "So Much Love", the evolution of "Mathilda" from humble intro to full-throttle riff march are just two examples that invoke a sense of journey, which sounds so good. As such here's hoping they never reach that destination.

Review: Jessica Pratt's third solo album is a blessing from the start, with opener, "Opening Night", setting the album's tone as a sojourn through a fresh but solemn memory, like strolling through a mist swept pasture. With Pratt's unique vocal ranging tied up in a mix of space, crackle and forgotten reverie, her vocals at times sounding as if they're lost somewhere in a wireless ether. With softly played chords and delicate strumming sitting in tune with dreamy interludes and folky motifs, City Slang have arguably dropped their best record for 2019 first.

Review: Although Sinkane is often regarded as a means for mainman Ahmed Gallab to reconcile the places he's found himself since birth, be they London, Sudan, Utah or Brooklyn, it's just as easily recongisable as a medium for him to channel a luminous pop sensiblity and a rare touch with a melody. The time this mercurial figure has served as a touring musician with both Yeasayer and Caribou should offer some hint at the global aesthetic of Sinkane's music as the breezily irresistible lilt of Mean Love. Yet what's most surprising is simply how memorable these songs are; whether deploying pedal steel-tinged country, Afrobeat or '70s style soul, the voice of Sinkane shines through, and it's a beguiling one to behold.

Mango
Review: London's krautrock, prog, electronica, free jazz and funk rock fusion specialist returns with his fourth full length for the mighty City Slang! "Depayse" remains fully laced with Ahmed Abdullahi Gallab's subtle Sudanese flair, singing praises and the word of love in "Everyone". The title track sees ambient jazz percussion give a giant runway for a massive guitar solo to take flight while album closer "Mango" delivers something of a West London-Caribbean vibe. In between is an album full of dips and climbs through the hill tops of a sunny afternoon somewhere in the feel-good malaise of Sinkane's multi-instrumental talents.

No Treasure But Hope
Review: If you're a fan of Antony and the Johnsons then Tindersticks should be familiar by now. Or at least Stuart Staples' voice should be, even if you've never come across the band before. But whereas Antony et al exist in a flamboyant queer disco cabaret, this lot occupy a place far less counter cultural, much sweeter and more tender. "No Treasure No Hope" a string-infused, piano-focussed chamber pop declaration of sweet nothings, both for those who are still with us and those who have come and gone. And it's not all romance. Comparisons are made between father's relationship with son and relationship with his own father ("The Old Man's Gait"). Tears falling into beers ("Trees Fall"). And delightful, innocent worlds are presented via songs like "The Amputees". Back on fine, late-night dark barroom form, it's the finest Tindersticks have given us in years.

Review: It's safe to say when City Slang releases a record everyone listens, with White Denim now the newest Texan contingent filling the ranks of the German label. Following a longplayer this year from Calexico outta Tucson, White Denim bring the sound of Austin to the label by delivering their ninth long player in ten years. Like the artwork of performance, the music is a colourful montage that brings together saxxy jazz, mellow tropicana and distorted garage to psych rock and pop, with melancholic vocals only adding to its unique cross section of colours. A highlight for us is the '70s Biker rock of "It Might Get Dark" and finger snappin', vibrato heavy "Moves On".

Review: Texas band White Denim have been kicking around for the past decade with a constant stream of albums released through labels like Full Time Hobby, Downtown, and for a second time, City Slang. "Side Effects" follows up from 2018's "Performance" and the band deliver once more a hotted up selection of rock 'n' roll licks that touch on a grungey sound not too distant from the New York Dolls. Furthermore, White Denim maintain their finger picking, folk and bluesy take on psychedelica, and acid washed or not, the band remain no frills in their musical technique with a subtle but quality touch of glam too. School's out for summer!
