Adjust Your Love EP
Cat: BLR 015. Rel: 28 Aug 19

Deep House
Adjust Your Love (6:04)
Easy Love Dub (6:22)
Horizons (5:05)
Review: We can confirm that Adam "Admin" Wickens is not only a hugely talented DJ and producer, but also a thoroughly nice chap. Here he makes his bow on Better Listen with a three-tracker packed to the rafters with warmth, soul and groove. Check first A-side "Adjust Your Love", a sample-fired workout that effortlessly joins the dots between disco, deep house and star-kissed jazz-funk, before turning your attention to the chopped-and-screwed samples, toasty sub-bass, languid beats and echoing piano snippets of "Easy Love Dub". The Bristol-based producer rounds things off in fine style via "Horizons", a slightly bouncier house cut that makes great use of some bluesy piano samples and another stoned, glassy-eyed bassline.

That Lonely Night (4:54)
Enchantress (5:32)
Moonshiner (7:00)
Are You Mesmerized? (7:11)
Review: Stockholm based Ari Bald is up next for Better Listen after inaugurating Honey Butter Records last year with that great release. He keeps on with that deep disco spirit with these four funky and lo-slung jams. On the A side, we have two ergonomic edits in the form of "That Lonely Night" and "Enchantress" respectively which are looped to perfection with some somewhat familiar hooks that gradually build up to that drop! That's where the thumping kick comes charging in and it's sure geared for maximum dancefloor dynamics. On the flip, get ready for the funk explosion that is "Moonshiner" or what could be your First Choice (mind the pun!) in the form of the smooth and sexy late night groove of "Are You Mesmerized?"

Hot! (6:56)
Layover (5:48)
Lights (6:30)
Homecoming (2:54)
Review: Following up that awesome last release by Closed Paradise and one by Thatmanmonkz, the mysterious Parisian Chevals joins District Of Columbia based Better Listen for their eighth outing, after making his debut on NYC's Homage with a global affair. The sultry and bumpin' disco house of "Hot!" starts things burning up fairly quick on the A side, looped to perfection much like early Rick Wade or DJ Sneak. It is followed by the smooth, early evening boogie-down vibe of "Layover" featuring yet more come hither vocals and hypnotic xylophone action. On the flip, we have a surprise in the from of the blunted hip-hop joint that is "Homecoming" getting that gritty MPC feel on, with choice use of sampling.

Fourth Base

The First Time (5:48)
Lula (7:07)
Fourth Base (5:47)
Oh Lord (5:47)
Review: Last year, Better Listen handed Joe Corti a chance to revitalize his career via a first EP in three years. He took that opportunity (via the brilliant "From London With Love") and here returns with an arguably even better sequel. Check first the languid, sun-kissed bounce of "The First Time", where super-sweet disco and soul samples gather around a chunky house groove, before turning your attention to the heavyweight disco-house pump of "Lula". Corti successfully ups the sweatiness via the dense drums, restless bass and jammed-out musical flourishes of peak-time bumper "Fourth Base", while "Oh Lord" is an inspired slab of lolloping deep house smothered in fuzzy synth stabs, swirling orchestral samples and just the right amount of sampled vocal sweetness.

Special People (6:14)
Mr Kuti (7:10)
Thinkin' (6:22)
Fulham Broadway (6:07)
Review: London-based deep house producer and occasional Morrissey lookalike Joe Corti made his debut back in 2015, but has been surprisingly quiet since then. Happily, Better Listen has given him the opportunity to re-invigorate his career via a first ever appearance on vinyl. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the bold, ear-catching bassline, "Get a Move On" style drums and disco-funk party samples of "Special People", to the spiraling disco-house heaviness of "Thinkin". Elsewhere, he peppers an Afro-house groove with swirling Afrobeat samples on "Fela" and brilliantly cuts-up a lesser-known version of a genuine disco classic on the rubbery release of "Fulham Broadway".

Hearty & Healthy (5:55)
Heineken 04 (5:31)
Dynamite! (Beer mix) (5:44)
Dynamite! (disco mix) (6:15)
Beer Machine (6:27)
Review: Cody Currie's self-titled EP on Pusic Records was one of the better deep house debuts of 2016. This follow-up for Better Listen is similarly impressive. It sees him showcase a range of tracks that fuse a hip-hop, sample-digging mentality with the dusty, soul-flecked deep house swing of Chicago and Detroit's jazzier producers. The rich and organic sounding opener "Hearty & Healthy"- all hip-hop vocal samples, spacey boogie synth breakdowns and MPC-driven deep house beats - is particularly alluring, though the 'Disco Mix' of "Dynamite" is also superb. The liquid deep house funk of "Beer Machine", where disco samples pop in and out of a rich backing track, feels like a late night anthem in waiting.

Tack Farsan EP
Cat: BLR 012. Rel: 10 Oct 18

Tack Farsan (5:38)
Grapefruit Dreams (feat Sune) (5:47)
Make Sure You Mean That Shit (6:34)
Besitos (5:47)
Review: Washington DC based disco enthusiasts Better Listen return with another brilliant collection of edits by Copenhagen based Dorsi Plantar - who presented last year's terrific Everlast EP for the label. He is also part of the five man Lovestomp posse: along with Paxton Fettel, Ryan Dank, Kris Percy and Shymon. Some very nice grooves on offer here, beginning with the lo-slung afro boogie of "Tack Farsan", classic house on a balearic tip on the neon-lit "Make Sure You Mean That Shit" and the soulful "Besitos" - a functional resplice that's perfect for burning up the dancefloor late at night with it's hypnotic conga action and dreamy xylophone vibes.

Everlast (6:08)
You're Solid As Fuck (6:35)
Fool's Gold (5:46)
Babesonite (5:20)
Review: District of Columbia-based deep house imprint Better Listen has barely put a foot wrong since launching late last year. Predictably, their latest missive, which comes courtesy of rising star Dorsi Plantar, is another beauty. Title track "Everlast" opens proceedings via jazzy, jammed-out pino riffs, dewy-eyed electronic flourishes and dusty deep house beats, before "You're Solid as Fuck" re-focuses attention on a chopped-and-looped deep house/jazz-funk fusion. Flip to the B-side for the grandiose orchestration of disco-house pumper "Fool's Gold" and the near-Balearic sweetness of sun-soaked chunky house closer "Babesonite", which comes on like a disco-house enthusiast's tribute to Pepe Bradock's "Deep Burnt".

Why My Love (feat Folamour) (6:15)
Loneliness Of The Shadow Dancer (6:08)
Playin' With Fire (6:16)
I Sold Yayo To Buy Kicks (6:20)
Review: Lyon soulboy Ethyene continues to rise in style with four deliciously silky, hazy house gems. Deep rooted in all the right foundations (particularly Paris and Chicago's take on the movement) the sense of timelessness seeps through every cloudy pad, every slo-mo jack and every sultry vocal. The prize piece here is the absolute soul surging opener "Why My Love" with longtime friend Folamour but every track commands attention - both from you and your dancefloor. The filtered finesse of "Loneliness Of The Shadow Dance", the cascading vocal honey drips of "Playin' With Fire" and the jazzier shuffles and deep confessional funk of "I Sold Yayo To Buy Kicks". Honest.

First Class EP
Cat: BLRVA 001. Rel: 18 Apr 18

Deep House
Folamour - "Oneness" (7:45)
Ethyene - "Watchin' U" (6:41)
Ari Bald - "First Class" (6:00)
Dorsi Plantar - "Boogie Sunrise" (6:00)
Review: Coming at you on vibrant pink vinyl, Better Listen's First Class EP more than lives up to its' title. Check, for example, the screaming sax lines, life-affirming orchestral disco loops and bumping bottom end of Folamour's brilliant opener, "Oneness", and the bouncy disco-house positivity of Ari Bald's edit-not-edit "First Class", which is guaranteed to put smiles on faces on out on the dancefloor. Dorsi Plantar successfully tries the same trick on to woozy, ultra-soulful bliss of swirling sunshine shuffler "Boogie Sunrise", while Ethyene's undulating "Watching You" brilliantly wraps eyes-closed synthesizer lines and glistening disco guitars around a leisurely mid-tempo house groove.

Bartz Groove (6:07)
Over Paradise (6:47)
Share My Love (6:43)
Profound Experience (6:45)
Review: Earlier in the year, Ashley "Arthur Jr" Stevenson debuted a new alias, The Last Trip To Gandahar, by contributing a track to the In House EP on City Fly (a label he co-founded many years back). This four-track outing is the project's first full outing, and also marks the debut of Washington DC-based label Better Listen. It's a confident and fun-packed affair, with Stevenson delivering tracks that sit somewhere between house-friendly re-edits, and sample-heavy original productions. As you'd probably expect, all four cuts are warm and groovy, making excellent use of elements of soul-soaked disco and jazz-funk tracks. It's all impeccably playable, with the flute-laden "Over Paradise" and righteous "Profound Experience" being our picks.

Hear Us Now (5:43)
Strange Land (5:44)
April (5:58)
Meanwhile Uptown (5:27)
Review: BLR's latest is another exploration of the deep with Delusions of Grandeur regular Norm de Plume behind the beats. This is a fresh four tracker with 'Hear Us Now' a rich, cosmic sound with vocals and twinkling keys over a punchy beat. There is a much more playful rhythm to 'Strange Land' that rocks back and forth on disco tinged loops filled with sunshine. It's back tiny heady territory for 'April,' a steamy basement cut for the soul, and rousing out is the smooth and seductive house sound of 'Meanwhile Uptown' which is something like what Rick Wade might produce.

Review: Better Listen have had a great year in 2020, with some standout releases from Mint Jams, Sune and Saint Paul & Ethyene. Up next on the Washington D.C. based label is veteran Finnish producer Lauri Saine, hot off some fire releases on Quintessentials, Delusions Of Grandeur and Fina Records with his new one here - the Silver Lining EP. From the low-slung boompty shuffle of 'Jangle', to 'Come Around' where you can hear the drummer get wicked on its sensual late night shuffle and warm lush keys. On the flip, Saine closes it out with the sexy mood music of 'Movin''.

Naturist Behavior (5:39)
A Hawaiian Trip (6:28)
Tell Me (6:37)
Feels Good (5:35)
Review: Better Listen's latest signing is dusty-fingered producer Saint Paul, who impressed us greatly with his debut single on Moonrise Hill Material this time last year. There's a wonderfully summery feel throughout, starting with the lilting horns, fluttering flute loops and Brazilian disco-flecked deep house shuffle of superb title track "Naturist Behaviour". Other highlights include the elongated, alien-sounding synthesizer lines and squeezable deep house/jazz-funk fusion of "A Hawaiian Trip" and the suitably deep, soulful and heady warmth of "Feels Good". He's also included a tasty '80s boogie/soul revision entitled "Tell Me", which sounds like the kind of glassy-eyed jam you'll be hearing an awful lot at outdoor parties this summer.

Want You (5:12)
Feel It (dub mix) (4:41)
Baby (Listen To Me) (5:03)
Review: Manchester DJ and producer Sameed spins his way into your affections here with a glorious EP that melts gospel, soul, disco and house into some lovely floor filers. 'Ode To G' has big Philly strings and classic-era diva vocals over copy and lopsided rhythms. 'Want You' is another loopy one but this time it's a bit tougher and more of a tease with a French house touch. 'Feel It' (dub mix) is all about the lung-busting vocal cries and rickety drums then the silkiest of the lot os the stuffing deep house cum US garage cut 'Baby (Listen To Me).'

Do You Even? (5:30)
Butter Love (5:45)
If Not Now, When? (6:14)
That One Day While Couch Surfin' (6:01)
Review: Emil Sunesson is a producer from Malmoe, Sweden that presents his second release after an impressive debut on Australian label Kyoku last year. His latest for Washington D.C. based Better Listen features the sun-kissed and dusty deep house joint "Do You Even?" which kicks things off in an emotive style - reminiscent of homeboys Genius Of Time or Berlin's Money $ex crew. For the most part, the tracks featured on the Butter Love EP are glorious moments of disco edit action - the title track's classic lo-slung groove is a respectful edit of a certain underground goodie - that those in the know will appreciate. On the flip is a thumping disco house stormer that will appeal to fans of Art Alfie or the Robsoul sound on the uplifting "If Not Now, When?"

Tom's Foolery (5:00)

Call It What You Want (5:22)
Review: Malmo-based producer Sune has been on a promising run over the past few years, first popping up on Kyoku and Live Ones before migrating to Let's Play House and Better Listen. He's back on the latter with some joyous, infectious house music crafted with soul and flair. "Summa Kardemumma" is a short low slung skit to open the EP up before "Elevator Connoisseur" sends things skywards with some wistful soul sampling and an energizing, organic kind of house beat. "Tom's Foolery" is a wonderfully jazzy, feel good cut, while "Direct Number" revolves around a catchy vocal sample and a lovely Motown flavour to the sound sources. "Call It What You Want" finishes things off with a more uptempo slice of house heaven, sealing the deal on a beautifully crafted EP of positive vibrations.

XDC (5:51)
Review: Sheffield's Thatmanmonkz returns with the Feels Trip To The District EP, where he teams up with his good pal Martin Miguel. The record is inspired by several trips to dope parties in the District of Columbia, home of the quickly rising label Better Listen Records. Starting off with the the lo-slung disco deepness of "Sweetiez Fresh", it's a dusty and looped up jam that will appeal to fans of the Robsoul sound. On the flip, things take a well funkier and more soulful turn with that familiar vocal on "The Assassinator" and finally things end on a groovy and sun kissed note with the slo-mo/hip-hop inspired boogie of "XDC". Real name Scott Moncrieff, he's appeared previously on a who's who of labels such as Delusions Of Grandeur, Kolour LTD and Classic in recent times.
