  1. Deep Down In Zanzibar (6:42)
  2. Desert Storm (6:32)
  3. Meet In Tunis (5:28)
  4. Orion Beat (6:17)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Afrodesia may come on like another dusted down gem from those dedicated detectives at Best, but it is in fact a modern construction from the talented studio trysts of Mystic Jungle and Whodamanny from the Periodica camp. These Italian producers have more than proved their knack for crafting sublime, honey-smooth jams with a nod to the golden studio era of the 70s and 80s, and they're more than up to the task on this killer 12" of heavy funking jams with a dose of boogie and a nod to Ivory Coast disco. It's quite simply perfection, rendered with love and attention to detail, but utterly natural in its feel and flavour.

  1. Stop (Special Electronic version)

Review: Best strike Italo gold once again with this Maurizio 'Sangy' Sangineto production. The original of Valery Allington's Stop has more of a pop funk feel, giving the vocalist and her backing crew stacks of space to hit the right spot but the real magic here is Maurizio's production on the special electronic version and instrumental. Aeons ahead of its time, the relentless pump and near-majestic synth work sound closer to '92 than '82. Tunnelling, hypnotic, percussive and funky, this was - and still is - the sound of the future.

Review: As well as all the jazz and funk, Best Italy are also dab hands at digging out Italo disco gems that pretty much qualify as proto house jams for their heavy spinning by the seminal Chicago DJs like Ron Hardy. This essential transmission from Amnesie is a fine case in point, a one hit wonder originally released in 1983 appropriately enough on Proto Records. Now "Turas" makes a welcome return, sounding resplendent in both vocal and instrumental versions, but the real treat for the dedicated diggers is the previously unreleased dub version mixed by legendary DJ Tony Carrasco. That's the jam that will have eclectic spinners getting in a lather.

Review: Best Italy continues to do a wonderful job of unearthing much-sought after gems and giving them the re-press they deserve. Lily Ann was a quintessential one hit wonder of Italo disco perfection that surfaced in 1984, and "Going Crazy" captures the mood of early 80s dance music perfectly. Adding value to the release beyond the fresh mastering job and high-end modern pressing, as well as the previously released vocal and instrumental we also get treated to a dub mix of "Going Crazy" to give you even more options for dropping this impeccable slice of Italian dance music history.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: This is just the sort of jam that Best Records Italy love. Asso originally released his slick cover of "Do It Again" by Steely Dan back in 1983, and it's a faithful version that simply injects a little disco magic into the impeccably composed bones of the track. It received plenty of play back in the day, and it's highly worthy of its own side of wax now. Meanwhile on the flip, "Don't Stop" is an even more essential a slab of club heat, tapping into the heady atmosphere of the Paradise Garage at the time that disco merged with boogie.

Review: Best Records do it again, dusting down a searing slice of robo-funk from the early 80s that will pop your lock every which way. B Funk was a one-off project from Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco, best known for their incredible work as Klein & MBO. They released the "Magic Spell" album in 1983, and it was loaded with richly produced Italo disco and proto house sounds - there's a good reason the original release has been fetching such crazy prices on the second hand market. Now Best have cherry picked two of the finest cuts from the album, sought out the extended disco versions from Carrasco's vaults, and given them a glorious new pressing.

Review: Not to be mistaken for the charity pop behemoth, this Band Aid were a band from Bologna that released a handful of albums and singles in the early 80s. Best Italy have dug out this loose and limber slice of sunny funk and given it a spruce up with a little help from Early Sounds crew member Pellegrino, whose "Mediterranean Version" of "A Tour In Italy" adorns the A side. It's all peppy brass, dreamy guitars and a kooky vocal line about the titular tour, guaranteed to break out some smiles on the dancefloor. On the B side you can indulge in Tony Carrasco's original vocal and dub versions, all of which equally exude summery vibes to keep you warm through the winter months.

Review: The Best Records reissue campaign continues unabated as the Italian label turns to Bariocentro. While the band may have had most of their time in the spotlight in the late 70s, they bowed out with a veritable bomb in the shape of Tittle Tattle, a tightly-wound, punchy slice of uptempo 80s boogie like they just can't make any more. Feel the reverb on the handclaps, the slick guitar chops and Moog-tastic bassline and just try not getting down. Review: Block Sistem is yet another curious entity from the labyrinthe archives of Italo disco. Originally released in 1983 on Rabbit Records, this gorgeous, richly produced slice of synthesizer acrobatics was a certifiable hit back in the day. As such, it's been fetching monstrous prices on the second hand market, but once again diggers can rejoice thanks to Best Record, who have done the right thing and dusted this rare gem down for a shimmering new 2019 release. Review: Blue Feather were a truly blue-eyed funk outfit from the Netherlands who had a prolific run in the 80s with two albums and a string of club singles to their name. "Let's Funk Tonight" was surely one of their bigger hits, and it sounds resplendent with a fresh master and the full extended version spread out across the A side here. Review: Best Records present another deep cover jam Balearic diggers will rejoice at being able to lay their hands on. Blue Night was the brainchild of Peter Miconi, who created "Turn Me Loose" in 1983. All the elements are present here, from the aching blue-eyed soul vocals to rich guitar solos and an irrepressible funk bedded down in the groove, here stretching out for a full 14 minutes of pure sunkissed bliss. On the flip, SIRS takes a careful run at the original that simply reframes the elements with a more pronounced rhythm section - this is someone who knows exactly what the track needs and declines to change anything for the sake of it. Classy stuff, as you would expect from a reissue on Best Records.

Putting paid to the bootlegs that have been doing the rounds, this official reissue presents "I'm In Love" in all its glory, with the epic 11-minute mix on the A side complemented by the slightly shorter "USA version" on the flip. Review: Cellophane was a cult project from Alessandro Novaga, an Italo producer who created tracks with a huge influence on the development of Chicago house. Besides his other production credits, Cellophane is an especially visionary venture that favours expansive, psychedelic suites of electronic disco over traditional song structures - just the kind of rare, oddball curiosity Best do such a good job of reissuing. While the A side is excellent in its own right, "Music Colours (Part 3)" on the B-side is the bomb here. Stomping, trippy and utterly addictive - from the Music Box to your record bag this kind of music just doesn't age.

Review: This week Best Italy take their reissue romp of Roman rarities down to the infamous Rimini discotheque Cellophane. Crafted as a tribute to the 80s club, "Gimme Love" is an absolute gem of an Italo record, pitched at the more subtle end of the spectrum without ditching the hallmarks of the style. The bass arpeggio still thrums with purpose and the vocals revel in a bath of vocoder processing, but the camp histrionics are replaced here with a more measured delivery that should go down a storm in all kinds of different sets. As well as the original version on the A, the B-side features the Italian version of the track.

Review: Best Italy turn to cult 80s producer Yannick Chevalier, best known for his work in the field of library music and sound effects, but also responsible for a wonderful, supremely rare disco oddity from 1984 in the shape of "Ecoute Le Son Du Soleil." As well as the off-kilter funk of the original, you can hear the heavily processed vocal on its own for all kinds of creative mixing potential, as well as the instrumental and dub versions. The latter is particularly heavy, built for tripped out dancefloor excursions if you need something serious in your 12" arsenal.

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Best may be best known for jazz and disco reissues, but they're also dab hands at unearthing forgotten gems from the annals of Italian deep house too. The Countach were last seen in active service back in 1990, dropping just two singles but making sure they were bona fide classics. "Aqua Marina" has plenty of lashings of jazz funk rubbed into its loins, not least on the "Sweet Dream Version". The "Paradise Version" nudges the key of the club mixes and ramps up the reverb, and then the "Original Studio Version" switches up the mood with an organic, live band groove on this crucial 12".

This sunkissed classic has everything a deep house cut should - smooth piano, a splash of diva vocals, and feel-good vibes oozing from every pore. Best Italy have dug out her shimmering Din-Don single and given it the new lease of life it so richly deserves, helped a little by DJ Harvey testing the cut out on his turntable travels. Noris' vocal is a curious wonder to behold, hitting a low register and imparting a gravelly tone that sits atop the punchy boogie production. Another slice of disco manna makes its way back into the limelight thanks to Best.

In 1983 they released "Incantations", a plush cosmic disco burner that rides a slow tempo but hits heavy with its rich layers of synth and slick guitar licks. Best are giving it a fresh airing with this on-point reissue, bringing the chugging bass arps back into the fold of a sympathetic scene that celebrates just this kind of evocative, sensual slow-mo party fodder. 2. Walkman (86 House mix By Brett Wilcots) (7:17)
Review: Best turn their attention to that sweet mid 80s spot when the petri dish of party music was shaken up between disco, boogie, Italo and the emergent house sound from Chicago. Claudio Simonetti was a titan of the Italian groove, but his monster jam as Kasso, "One More Round", reached the stratosphere when Windy City godfather Frankie Knuckles gave the track his Midas touch. No more justification is needed for this pressing, but don't overlook the flip which finds 80s remix supremo Brett Wilcots taking on "Walkman" and whipping up a boogie frenzy of the highest order.

KID Disco Versions (limited 12")

Disco/Nu-Disco
  1. Watch Out (Disco version)
  2. Fine Time Tonight (Disco version)
  3. Come & Get It (Disco version)
  4. Midnight Magic (Disco version)
Review: Best Records dig out some truly powerful disco from a close ally of Giorgio Moroder's - Geoff Bastow. K.I.D. were best known for boogie classic "Don't Stop", but here the group of synth disco impresarios have dug into the archives to present rare disco mixes of four other essential early 80s party jams. "Watch Out" rides in hard on a classic Moroder-esque arpeggio, while "Fine Time Tonight" takes a perfect laid back approach to electro funk. "Come & Get It" is a vocoder laden slinker of the highest order and "Midnight Magic" whips out some bold brass and rubbery synth licks for the dancefloor.

  1. The MBO Theme (long version) (6:01)
  2. The MBO Theme (Italian version) (6:02)
Review: Best Records fire up a surefire classic from the annals of Italian dance music, crafted courtesy of Italo-disco heavyweight Klein & MBO. "The MBO Theme" was originally a hit in the nascent Chicago house scene, spun by the likes of Ron Hardy thanks to its punchy synth bass and hooky Euro-vocals. This sought-after dancefloor gem has been given a faithful remastering touch, as is the Best Records way, and they've also dug out a previously unheard edit of the track named as the "Italian Version," which stretches out the club qualities of the jam for maximum party impact.

  1. I'm Dreaming (original vocal version)
  2. I'm Dreaming (instrumental version)
Review: South African musician John Kongos has an illustrious career that has tripped through chart topping material and soundtracks alike. In 1981 he released "I'm Dreaming" as a limited 7", and now Best have dug out this curious gem and given it a proper 12" reissue treatment. The track is a real head turner, leaping from expressive string chops to Italo thrum to create a dynamic, distinctive disco burner that will have switched on heads clamouring for an ID. The vocal version is on point, but the track has enough riches in its composition to make the instrumental take on the flip just as powerful for your record bag.

  1. Love On The Rocks (5:23)
  2. Nineteen Ninety Three (5:04)
Review: Here comes the Best train with a payload of disco delights from the depths of time, and this is one trip you don't want to miss. "Il Veliero" is a club classic immortalized in so many great versions, from Lucio Battisti's original version to the epic cover by The Chaplin Band, but here's LAMA's English language version "Love On The Rocks" from 1983, which gives the infectious melancholy an electro injection. On the flip things take a more ominous turn with the gothic Italo tint of "Nineteen Ninety Three" - camp and dark hearted in equal measure, and utterly magnificent.

  4. Hey George! (4:30)
Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Roberto Lodola has a rich legacy in Italian music, not least as a DJ and at the helm of early 90s outfit Rhythm Factory. Recognising the cult status of his first single, the 1986 12" Marimba Do Mar, Best Records have done the right thing in remastering this sun soaked classic with both original mixes and two previously unheard studio outtakes. The "Fusion Version" of the title track is a rich, sensual jam festooned with cascading pianos and tumbling percussion, while the "Vocal Version" brings a beautiful female vocal front and centre in the mix. "Feeling Of The Sun" is a delightfully spaced out lo-fi take on the original, and then "Hey George!" strips the music away and leaves you with a gorgeous beat track perfect for extended mixing potential.

  1. Magic Dance (Disco mix) (8:29)
  2. Pink Footpath (Disco mix) (6:13)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Compared to some of the ultra-obscure releases buffed up and reissued on Best, Loui$' "Magic Dance" is something of a perennial classic, but that doesn't diminish its value in getting another airing. Loui$ released a modest wedge of killer party anthems in his 80s peak, but this debut 12" in 1985 was the glittering prize. Of all the versions of this release, the rare Blow Up Records edition is the one that gets a look in here, and it's all about that special disco mix of "Pink Footpath". From gutsy analogue bass to shimmering lead pads, it's a dreamy dancefloor jam in every way.

  1. You're Hurting Me (Pellegrino Na Na Na edit) (6:41)

Review: Man Face was a short-lived project from the heyday of disco, helmed by two South African artists Winston Alwyn Gill and Henderson Brathwaite, but recorded in Italy. It's little wonder to see "You're Hurting Me" coming to light on Best Records, the trusted stable for all kinds of Italian dance curios, but this time the re-release is being handled in conjunction with the always-on-point Early Sounds crew. Pellegrino, himself an Early Sounds regular, handles edit duties on the A side and lathers up the original with a delicate but delectable approach that keeps the bubbling grooves of Man Face intact while edging a little more mileage out of those sumptuous keys pattering drums.

Review: From the team responsible for Kano and the evergreen Italo hit "I'm Ready," Matakena was a one-off release back in 1983 that has since gone on to attain true cult status (i.e. monstrous second hand prices). Thankfully, the trusted bastion of reissued Italian grooves Best Records is on hand to bring the music back to the people, digging the irrepressible funk of "Nuts On Me" and "Aphrodisiac" out of the vaults and pressing it up for a new generation to get down to. This is sleazy boogie par excellence, full of liquid synth bass, steamy vocals and grooves to die for.

Review: Best present Francesco Messina's 1983 debut LP, produced by Franco Battiato. It's a serious listen steeped in high drama and bombast, rendered in plush studio veneer and the era's finest electronic technology. At the heart is classic Italian songwriting, all melodramatic opera interjections and swooning instrumental refrains, but you can hear the magic touch given by epoch-defining tools like the Fairlight CMI and EMU Emulator, sending these bold compositions into celestial spaces. It's very much of its time, and that's precisely why we love it.

  1. Miss Manhattan (vocal) (8:53)

Review: Best Records get busy with this absolutely classic slice of early Italian disco from 1981, put together in the one-off-studio-project stylee by Al Festa, Claudio Giusti and Francesco Puccioni. The full vocal mix on the A side nearly hits the nine minute mark, and it's all gold from the chirpy horn section to the scintillating vocal turn by Sharon Russell. The influence from the Nile Rodgers school of funk is plain to hear, not least on the instrumental take on the B side, but also watch out for the gorgeous soliloquy of the "Manhattan's Piano Reprise" which is snuck on as an added extra from the archives.

  1. Stop Your Lies (vocal) (6:13)
  2. Stop Your Lies (instrumental) (6:23)
Review: Best Records' own luminary Claudio Casalini was at the helm for this one-shot studio project that captures Italo disco at its most exuberant and organic. Originally released in 1984, the bassline on "Stop Your Lies" is a quintessential slice of synthetic throb from a golden era, but the electronic elements are wonderfully offset by rich instrumentation and a brilliantly camp vocal performance from the unnamed boy-girl combo. The vocal mix on the A side is strong enough for a single-sided cut, but the instrumental on the flip widens out the reach of the record and really lets Casalini's superb production shine through.

Review: A cult Italo gem that's equal parts boogie, funk and disco and boasts some of the sweetest transitions ever pressed to wax in the hot summer of 1983: Star-gazing p-funk synths, five-a-day slap juicy slap bass, ballsy harmonies and a percussive section so intense you'll swear you're a shaman, "Goalmaker" really lives up to its name. A back of the net scenario in any disco context, drop this and you'll be man of the match.

  1. You (Special Disco version) (6:14)
  2. You (instrumental) (6:28)
Review: Best Records are always a trusted source of reissued obscurities, but they've really outdone themselves this time. New Horizon was a one-off studio project from NYC buried in the annals of 70s disco funk, supposedly helmed by Donald Jenkins, but the chances of finding this mythical record were less than zero before now. "You" is a sumptuous jam, where each player shines in equal measure from the limber bass to the gossamer keys and stirring singers. This is soul jazz of the highest order, so very worthy of a reissue not least in its "Special Disco" guise. The vocal-less cut on the flip is just as wonderful, spinning a web of instrumentation that peaks with a wild guitar solo.
