Desert Storm (6:32)

Review: REPRESS ALERT!: Afrodesia may come on like another dusted down gem from those dedicated detectives at Best, but it is in fact a modern construction from the talented studio trysts of Mystic Jungle and Whodamanny from the Periodica camp. These Italian producers have more than proved their knack for crafting sublime, honey-smooth jams with a nod to the golden studio era of the 70s and 80s, and they're more than up to the task on this killer 12" of heavy funking jams with a dose of boogie and a nod to Ivory Coast disco. It's quite simply perfection, rendered with love and attention to detail, but utterly natural in its feel and flavour.

Stop (instrumental)
Review: Best strike Italo gold once again with this Maurizio 'Sangy' Sangineto production. The original of Valery Allington's Stop has more of a pop funk feel, giving the vocalist and her backing crew stacks of space to hit the right spot but the real magic here is Maurizio's production on the special electronic version and instrumental. Aeons ahead of its time, the relentless pump and near-majestic synth work sound closer to '92 than '82. Tunnelling, hypnotic, percussive and funky, this was - and still is - the sound of the future.

Turas (dub version)
Review: As well as all the jazz and funk, Best Italy are also dab hands at digging out Italo disco gems that pretty much qualify as proto house jams for their heavy spinning by the seminal Chicago DJs like Ron Hardy. This essential transmission from Amnesie is a fine case in point, a one hit wonder originally released in 1983 appropriately enough on Proto Records. Now "Turas" makes a welcome return, sounding resplendent in both vocal and instrumental versions, but the real treat for the dedicated diggers is the previously unreleased dub version mixed by legendary DJ Tony Carrasco. That's the jam that will have eclectic spinners getting in a lather.

Review: Best Italy continues to do a wonderful job of unearthing much-sought after gems and giving them the re-press they deserve. Lily Ann was a quintessential one hit wonder of Italo disco perfection that surfaced in 1984, and "Going Crazy" captures the mood of early 80s dance music perfectly. Adding value to the release beyond the fresh mastering job and high-end modern pressing, as well as the previously released vocal and instrumental we also get treated to a dub mix of "Going Crazy" to give you even more options for dropping this impeccable slice of Italian dance music history.

Don't Stop
Review: REPRESS ALERT: This is just the sort of jam that Best Records Italy love. Asso originally released his slick cover of "Do It Again" by Steely Dan back in 1983, and it's a faithful version that simply injects a little disco magic into the impeccably composed bones of the track. It received plenty of play back in the day, and it's highly worthy of its own side of wax now. Meanwhile on the flip, "Don't Stop" is an even more essential a slab of club heat, tapping into the heady atmosphere of the Paradise Garage at the time that disco merged with boogie.

Who, What, Where, When & Why (Disco version) (5:10)
No Promises (Disco version) (6:46)
Review: Best Records do it again, dusting down a searing slice of robo-funk from the early 80s that will pop your lock every which way. B Funk was a one-off project from Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco, best known for their incredible work as Klein & MBO. They released the "Magic Spell" album in 1983, and it was loaded with richly produced Italo disco and proto house sounds - there's a good reason the original release has been fetching such crazy prices on the second hand market. Now Best have cherry picked two of the finest cuts from the album, sought out the extended disco versions from Carrasco's vaults, and given them a glorious new pressing.

A Tour In Italy (Tony Carrasco mix - dub version) (6:14)
Review: Not to be mistaken for the charity pop behemoth, this Band Aid were a band from Bologna that released a handful of albums and singles in the early 80s. Best Italy have dug out this loose and limber slice of sunny funk and given it a spruce up with a little help from Early Sounds crew member Pellegrino, whose "Mediterranean Version" of "A Tour In Italy" adorns the A side. It's all peppy brass, dreamy guitars and a kooky vocal line about the titular tour, guaranteed to break out some smiles on the dancefloor. On the B side you can indulge in Tony Carrasco's original vocal and dub versions, all of which equally exude summery vibes to keep you warm through the winter months.

Review: The Best Records reissue campaign continues unabated as the Italian label turns to Bariocentro. While the band may have had most of their time in the spotlight in the late 70s, they bowed out with a veritable bomb in the shape of Tittle Tattle, a tightly-wound, punchy slice of uptempo 80s boogie like they just can't make any more. Feel the reverb on the handclaps, the slick guitar chops and Moog-tastic bassline and just try not getting down. This plush reissue comes packed with the radio edit, the full length version, the instrumental and everyone's favourite slice of 80s B side action, the dub mix.

Review: Block Sistem is yet another curious entity from the labyrinthe archives of Italo disco. Originally released in 1983 on Rabbit Records, this gorgeous, richly produced slice of synthesizer acrobatics was a certifiable hit back in the day. As such, it's been fetching monstrous prices on the second hand market, but once again diggers can rejoice thanks to Best Record, who have done the right thing and dusted this rare gem down for a shimmering new 2019 release. In true Best style they've kept the sanctity of the original record intact, with a vocal mix on the A side and the instrumental on the B side, but this time around there's some utterly fresh artwork adorning the release. Let's Funk Tonight (Faze Action dub) (5:43)
Review: Blue Feather were a truly blue-eyed funk outfit from the Netherlands who had a prolific run in the 80s with two albums and a string of club singles to their name. "Let's Funk Tonight" was surely one of their bigger hits, and it sounds resplendent with a fresh master and the full extended version spread out across the A side here. Offering something new for the modern market, Best call upon Faze Action to flesh out this reissue with a killer dub of the track that treads softly but funks deep, just like a good dub should.

Review: Best Records present another deep cover jam Balearic diggers will rejoice at being able to lay their hands on. Blue Night was the brainchild of Peter Miconi, who created "Turn Me Loose" in 1983. All the elements are present here, from the aching blue-eyed soul vocals to rich guitar solos and an irrepressible funk bedded down in the groove, here stretching out for a full 14 minutes of pure sunkissed bliss. On the flip, SIRS takes a careful run at the original that simply reframes the elements with a more pronounced rhythm section - this is someone who knows exactly what the track needs and declines to change anything for the sake of it. Classy stuff, as you would expect from a reissue on Best Records.

Review: Cela was a one-off Italo disco project from the late 70s helmed by Marty Celay, and of course you knew it wouldn't be long until unstoppable reissue maestros Best Italy got their mitts on such a gorgeous gem from the golden era of disco. Putting paid to the bootlegs that have been doing the rounds, this official reissue presents "I'm In Love" in all its glory, with the epic 11-minute mix on the A side complemented by the slightly shorter "USA version" on the flip. Fluid, funky-as-hell basslines, sumptuous vocals and an overall romantic mood make this a well-deserved reissue and a fine addition to the ever-swelling Best catalogue.

Review: Cellophane was a cult project from Alessandro Novaga, an Italo producer who created tracks with a huge influence on the development of Chicago house. Besides his other production credits, Cellophane is an especially visionary venture that favours expansive, psychedelic suites of electronic disco over traditional song structures - just the kind of rare, oddball curiosity Best do such a good job of reissuing. While the A side is excellent in its own right, "Music Colours (Part 3)" on the B-side is the bomb here. Stomping, trippy and utterly addictive - from the Music Box to your record bag this kind of music just doesn't age.

Gimme Love (Italian version)
Review: This week Best Italy take their reissue romp of Roman rarities down to the infamous Rimini discotheque Cellophane. Crafted as a tribute to the 80s club, "Gimme Love" is an absolute gem of an Italo record, pitched at the more subtle end of the spectrum without ditching the hallmarks of the style. The bass arpeggio still thrums with purpose and the vocals revel in a bath of vocoder processing, but the camp histrionics are replaced here with a more measured delivery that should go down a storm in all kinds of different sets. As well as the original version on the A, the B-side features the Italian version of the track.

Review: Best Italy turn to cult 80s producer Yannick Chevalier, best known for his work in the field of library music and sound effects, but also responsible for a wonderful, supremely rare disco oddity from 1984 in the shape of "Ecoute Le Son Du Soleil." As well as the off-kilter funk of the original, you can hear the heavily processed vocal on its own for all kinds of creative mixing potential, as well as the instrumental and dub versions. The latter is particularly heavy, built for tripped out dancefloor excursions if you need something serious in your 12" arsenal.

Review: While this fabulous album may sound old - as if it was an obscure, jazz-funk-tinged Italian disco release from 1982 - it is in fact brand, spanking new, making it the first new LP of original material released by legendary Italian imprint Best Record in over four decades. Created by Raffaele 'Whodammy' Arcella and Cosimo Cosmo Mandorino, it offers the same kind of boundary-blurring fusion of early '80s boogie, electro, low-tempo Italo-disco, jazz-funk, disco, Afro-cosmic and colourful Balearic pop (with a few cheeky raps and spoken word vocal passages thrown in) as the Neopolitan albums of the early-to-mid 1980s that inspired them. It's a brilliant set all told - one that authentically pays tribute to their influences and inspirations while offering something genuinely new and exciting.

Review: During the pre-Italo-disco era, many Italian musicians and producers made the move to New York after making their own surprisingly authentic-sounding disco records back home. There, they frequentlyworked with Black American singers to make singles and albums that were, curiously, then released in Italy rather than the U.S. New Jersey singer Robert Cotter's 1980 set, Timeless, is a particularly good example - especially as it's a fantastic collection of disco, disco-funk and dancefloor soul workouts. Reissued here for the first time, highlights of the five-track set include the infectious, stretched-out opener 'Rock Me With Your Love' - an under-played dancefloor classic - and the boogie-tinged disco shuffler 'Timeless'.

The Countach were last seen in active service back in 1990, dropping just two singles but making sure they were bona fide classics. With its insistent rhythmic thump, chanting vocals and delicate keys it's little wonder the likes of DJ Harvey love spinning it. Review: Vega Synthauri, written by composer Daniele Pace and Corrado Conti for their brief but groundbreaking project Donna Laser, is often regarded as one of the most significant electronic tracks in Italo-Disco. Its well-planted drums, rabid synthwork and charmingly spooky, pre-quantized arpeggiations are done thorough justice on this reissue. Grace Kelly's Song, meanwhile, is more reminiscent of an Italian soundtrack cut, a slow jam recalling vague memories of Lake Como unwinding in some late '80s summer.

Review: First released on the obscure Derby label way back in 1982, Dr Togo's debut single "Be Free" has long been an in-demand Italo-disco rarity. It was co-produced by Louis Figino, who had previously produced Kano's legendary single "I'm Ready", and featured that band's lead vocalist, Glenn White, as the headline-grabbing Dr Togo. This much-needed reissue boasts both versions from the original 12: the deep disco warmth of the A-side vocal version, in which White's invitation to come dance rides rich chords, rubbery slap-bass and spacey synthesizers, and the dub style flipside "Instrumental" mix. In keeping with the style of the time it was recorded, this includes additional layered percussion and selected snippets of the original's female backing vocals.

Best Italy have dug out her shimmering Din-Don single and given it the new lease of life it so richly deserves, helped a little by DJ Harvey testing the cut out on his turntable travels. It's as gentle and sweet natured as Italo disco can be, and of course it makes perfect sense that Best Records would dig it out of the archives and give it the shiny new reissue it deserves. Best are giving it a fresh airing with this on-point reissue, bringing the chugging bass arps back into the fold of a sympathetic scene that celebrates just this kind of evocative, sensual slow-mo party fodder. The original mix elevates in the second half with a soaring vocal from Stefania Dal Pino, but if that doesn't appeal there's a purely instrumental take on the B side that focuses purely on the groove.

Review: Italian singer and songwriter Giampiero Scalamonga had a successful run as a disco hitmaker through the 70s, and his crowning glory was surely the Body To Body LP released in 1979. Now Best Records have turned back the clock to disco's golden hour to reissue the Gepy & Gepy classic on pristine wax. While the A-side title track is a timeless gem on its own, it's the impassioned club burner "African Love Song" that will have the diggers rejoicing. From its days as a staple in Studio 54 it's been a sought after gem, and now it's back in circulation for those that know.

Review: Here's another highly desirable slice of formative party fuel from the dusty highways and byways of dance music culture, brought to you by the diligent miners at Best Records. The Gong's Gang was a one-off alias for the equally one-off Nicolosi Family, a collective of real-life brothers and sisters who knew a thing or two about classic early 80s Italo boogie. "Gimme Your Love" is a stellar jam, with Rosanna Nicolosi out front on vocals and the cascading synths and bass stewing in an intoxicating blend that should have any funk detective frothing with approval. Whether you want the full vocal hit or the subtly dubbed out instrumental, this is a jam thoroughly deserving of a second run in the sun.

Review: Claudio Casalini's Best Record label does a fine job of reissuing funk, disco and other curios from the mists of time, and so it goes with this wonderful slice of loose and live soul jazz. Grupo Almendra hailed from Venezuela, and they released their sole album Almendra in 1978 in a whirlwind of Latin American musicality and it had been consigned to relative obscurity. Whichever digger was lucky enough to discover this gem must have been very pleased indeed, for the quality of the music and the production is nothing short of remarkable, while the remastering has respectfully revived the sweet, soulful sound of Grupo Almendra.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: Once more scouring the annals of disco history for the hottest jams, Best look beyond Italy and snap up this much-vaunted slice of American funk from 1982. While second hand prices can get out of control, it's not hard to hear why this glittering prize from Jagg would be so coveted - it's got everything. Jazz-leaning slap bass, mean synthesizer chops and soaring vocals - "Take Time" is prime to set the party off, and no longer is it the preserve of wealthy collectors. Originally a single-sided affair, Best have done the right thing and filled the B-side up with an extended version to let that groove roll on even longer.

Review: Scorchio: Best return in time for the summer with one of the funkiest productions Maurizio 'Sangy' Sangineto has ever conjured. Sleazy electro boogie with just the right balance of Italo and soul in the mix, "Baby Come On" was a solo expedition by Armed Gang's James Otis White Jr. who hits the juiced-up bass-led groove in consummate syrup-toned style but gives the groove all the room it needs to let loose. Spacious, sun-kissed and profoundly funky, this couldn't have landed at a better time.

Got To Have Your Lovin (vocal) (6:09)
Got To Have Your Lovin (instrumental) (4:57)
Review: Steve Kahn & Co. are yet another of those curios of the early 80s that Best Italy have dug out, dusted down, spruced up and repressed for your eclectic party pleasure. "Got To Have Your Loving" is a pure feel good jam at every turn - it's got a very natural, live band sound mixed by the legendary Tee Scott that especially makes the aqueous bass playing shine through. Whether you plump for the vocal or the instrumental, this is the kind of record that could set a wedding party on fire as much as a serious heads-down disco funk session. You'll no doubt get a lot of mileage out of this one, and have a great time in the process.

One More Round (86 House mix By Frankie Knuckles) (8:10)
Walkman (86 House mix By Brett Wilcots) (7:17)
Review: Best turn their attention to that sweet mid 80s spot when the petri dish of party music was shaken up between disco, boogie, Italo and the emergent house sound from Chicago. Claudio Simonetti was a titan of the Italian groove, but his monster jam as Kasso, "One More Round", reached the stratosphere when Windy City godfather Frankie Knuckles gave the track his Midas touch. No more justification is needed for this pressing, but don't overlook the flip which finds 80s remix supremo Brett Wilcots taking on "Walkman" and whipping up a boogie frenzy of the highest order.

Review: Best Records dig out some truly powerful disco from a close ally of Giorgio Moroder's - Geoff Bastow. K.I.D. were best known for boogie classic "Don't Stop", but here the group of synth disco impresarios have dug into the archives to present rare disco mixes of four other essential early 80s party jams. "Watch Out" rides in hard on a classic Moroder-esque arpeggio, while "Fine Time Tonight" takes a perfect laid back approach to electro funk. "Come & Get It" is a vocoder laden slinker of the highest order and "Midnight Magic" whips out some bold brass and rubbery synth licks for the dancefloor.

Review: Best Records fire up a surefire classic from the annals of Italian dance music, crafted courtesy of Italo-disco heavyweight Klein & MBO. "The MBO Theme" was originally a hit in the nascent Chicago house scene, spun by the likes of Ron Hardy thanks to its punchy synth bass and hooky Euro-vocals. This sought-after dancefloor gem has been given a faithful remastering touch, as is the Best Records way, and they've also dug out a previously unheard edit of the track named as the "Italian Version," which stretches out the club qualities of the jam for maximum party impact.

Review: South African musician John Kongos has an illustrious career that has tripped through chart topping material and soundtracks alike. In 1981 he released "I'm Dreaming" as a limited 7", and now Best have dug out this curious gem and given it a proper 12" reissue treatment. The track is a real head turner, leaping from expressive string chops to Italo thrum to create a dynamic, distinctive disco burner that will have switched on heads clamouring for an ID. The vocal version is on point, but the track has enough riches in its composition to make the instrumental take on the flip just as powerful for your record bag.

Love On The Rocks (5:23)
Nineteen Ninety Three (5:04)
Review: Here comes the Best train with a payload of disco delights from the depths of time, and this is one trip you don't want to miss. "Il Veliero" is a club classic immortalized in so many great versions, from Lucio Battisti's original version to the epic cover by The Chaplin Band, but here's LAMA's English language version "Love On The Rocks" from 1983, which gives the infectious melancholy an electro injection. On the flip things take a more ominous turn with the gothic Italo tint of "Nineteen Ninety Three" - camp and dark hearted in equal measure, and utterly magnificent.
