Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface mark on the record, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

Adia Victoria makes a thoroughly welcome return with her third album, A Southern Gothic. From her unmistakable vocal twang to the scratchy tone of her guitar and the bottleneck lurches behind her, she embodies the south of the USA with undeniable flair. Doubling down on that idea for her third record, she conjures up another stellar run of blues with acerbic wit and confessional intimacy woven together in potent fashion. Featuring the likes of Kyahona and Margo Price on 'You Was Born To Die' and Stone Jack Jones on 'My Oh My', this might just be her best album yet.

Review: Two years after her debut album Heaven & Hell, Albanian-American pop star Ava Max returns with her sophomore effort, Diamonds & Dancefloors. The clue's in the name as to the vibe Max is aiming for with this release, and lead single 'Maybe You're The Problem' sets the tone for a bright and bouncy strain of dance pop which will dig its claws in and have you humming along for the rest of the week. This is infectious, feel-good music of the highest order, and confirms what we already knew about Ava Max being an unstoppable force in the world of major label pop.

Review: A 2024 reissue of Bruno Mars' multi-platinum sophomore LP. Including the back-to-back number one smash hits including 'When I Was Your Man', 'Locked Out Of Heaven', 'Treasure' and 'Gorilla', this is the most up-to-date sonic account of the pop heartthrob yet. With production credits shared between Mark Ronson, Jeff Bhasker, Emile Hayne, Diplo and Supa Dups, the album notably contains no guest vocalists, going in with the full-on solo intentionality that marked Mars out as a chart-bound talent in the first place. Also a logical successor to 2010's Doo-Wops & Hooligans, it too concerns similar themes to the former record's dealings in whirlwind relationships and explicit subject matters.

Review: The fourth album from the English pop experimentalist was made over just six week in a "do-it-yourself" collaborative process with her fans. It is inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown and was executively produced by A. G. Cook and BJ Burton. Fans and critics alike fell immediately in love with the record which was also shortlisted for the 2020 Mercury Prize. Edgy experimental production and hooky pop songwriting have rarely collided as successfully as they do here, with plenty of hyper-energetic sounds and shimmering synths, bubblegum bass and mechanical motifs all making this as much an impromptu mixtape as a studio album. Truly, this is a work of its time.

Review: Charli XCX's 'Pop 2', first released as a mixtape in 2017, marked the moment the singer departed from her conventional chart-pop sensibilities and began flirting with hyperpop. Her involvement in the genre was also arguably one of the first moments hyperpop formed a mirror image to Charli's movements, with collaborating artists like A.G. Cook, Tommy Cash, and Dorian Electra beginning to flirt with the regular old pop world. The result was a blurring of the lines between what was and wasn't 'it' (it didn't yet have the name), producing an interesting conundrum. Full of such chirpy, retrofuturistic, and ironically distorted bangers as 'Backseat', 'Porsche', and 'Delicious', Charli and fellow featurer's vocals (MO, Carly Rae Jepsen) are crisp enough to sound like digital knife-edges. This pink vinyl reissue is not one to miss.

Review: 'Brat' is Charlotte Emma Aitchison's sixth studio album as Charli XCX, the follow-up from her "sell-out era", 2022's 'Crash' which topped multiple charts and gave the British pop singer a newfound notoriety that she had long been deserving. A longtime collaborator with PC Music founder and Beyonce-credited producer A.G. Cook, whose production can be found in the album's latest double single 'Club Classics/B2b', Charli is returning to her roots of dance music and electronic pop - a far cry from the hazy alt-pop she launched her career with. Following the launch of 'Von dutch', the lead single produced by PC Music producer EASYFUN (aka Finn Keanne), Charli has gone on record saying that this is her best body of work - a title that once belonged to the cult classic mixtape 'Pop 2' - and it's easy to see why, the blaring synths and honed in club music focus is unlike anything anybody in the mainstream pop sphere is doing right now. Pressed on a translucent black vinyl, and coupled with one of the best album covers maybe of all time, it's never been a better time to be one of Charli's angels.

Review: 'Ole Coltrane' is a three-piece curio from jazz great John Coltrane, recorded in his pre-Love Supreme period, and best known for being one of many in which the legendary trumpeter favoured the use of modes. Packed with long faces from the blues and dragging brush caressings, the three pieces that are Ole, Dahomey Dance and Aisha are all muted compositions for smoked-out nights of indeterminate emotion.

Review: Despite a number of significant personnel changes since the release of their previous album (the departure of founder member Chris Walla being the biggest), Death Cab For Cutie still seems to be in rude health. Now two decades into their ongoing career, the American band is still capable of producing glistening indie-pop brilliance, heart-aching torch songs and anthem-like festival sing-alongs. There's plenty of goodness to be found, then, on ninth studio album Thank You For Today, a set bristling with classic Death Cab For Cutie moments - not least the tactile bliss of "When We Drive", boisterous "Gold Rush" and chiming "You Moved Away".

Review: Long before they were literally one of the biggest pop-rock acts on the planet, little known Chicago pop-punk upstarts Fall Out Boy would pool all collective resources, energy and funds into their 2003 debut full-length Take This To Your Grave; utterly reforming modern emo and pop-punk in the process. While it was 2005's sophomore follow up From Under The Cork Tree that would catapult the band to mega stardom, there's no ignoring the bevvy of legwork that their debut provided, especially lead singles 'Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy' and 'Saturday', which clarified that this was far from another relatively catchy, acne-faced group of adolescents who'd dissipate with the next shower. These songs and the young men behind them were here to stay, which makes the heavier hardcore-leaning moments and breakdowns all the more bemusing to experience when assessing the career the band would embark upon following the record's breakout success.

Review: Fred Again's latest album Actual Life 3: January 1 - September 9 2022 is the third installment in a series of albums by the British artist which has received positive reviews from music critics and been praised for its experimental sound and emotional depth. The LP features songs that document his personal experiences and thoughts over a period of time. His musical style can be described as a blend of electronic, dance and pop with introspective and emotive lyrics, often incorporating samples from various sources, including personal recordings to create a unique and eclectic sound. The album features collaborations with various artists, such as Kieren Hebden, Jamie XX and Skrillex, among others.

Review: Fred Again seems to be one of the most talked about artists of the year. Part of that centers around the astonishing Boiler Room set he served up, but also plenty of credit is due for the music he makes. A lot of that is summed up here on Actual Life 3, the third installment of his series after the previous two back in 2021 and recent collabs with the likes of Swedish House Mafia and Future. It shows off his mastery of a range of different sounds and scenes across 13 fun and fresh tunes that are backed with emotive beats and catchy hooks as well as some standout vocals.

Review: Pedestrian Verse is a critically acclaimed album by Frightened Rabbit, whose rapidly blooming career was cut short by the death of singer Scott Hutchison in May 2018. It has now been a full decade since the band dropped the mini-masterpiece and so it gets remastered at half speed and reissued by Atlantic with the full and original 12-track album on LP next to a bonus 12" with 11 extra tracks. This was the band's fourth studio album and the only one to feature guitarist and keyboardist Gordon Skene. The record is inspired in part by a break up and finds each of the members of the band stepping up their contribution to the songwriting. It's a great piece of modern indie history.

Review: This East London duo honed their style in their own studios, sculpting a homespun sound that marries electronic innovation with a warmly soulful approach redolent of a welcome British answer to the glitzy R&B more commonly found across the Atlantic - kneed that rendered bt self-admitted heroes of this pair such as Usher. Yet boasting a neon-drenched late night aesthetic that's somehow maintains enough brio and quirky charm to avoid it sounding like the soundtrack to a perfume advert, 'Warm On A Cold Night' is as sleek and sophisticated as it is earthy and characterful.

The Detroit rocker might have come to prominence initially decades ago but this new album shows he hasn't lost his touch. Every Loser includes his recent single 'Frenzy' featuring contributions from the likes of Watt, Guns N' Roses' Duff McKagan, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Chad Smith, and others and comes just three years after his last LP, Free. Says the man himself of this one, "The players are guys I've known since they were kids, and the music will beat the shit out of you." He's not wrong.

Review: Iggy Pop's new album Every Loser is his own treatise on punk necessarily requiring a "sense of hopelessness about it". Produced with musician and label owner Andrew Watt, Pop insists that this is "music that will beat the shit out of you". Relentlessly energetic and guitar-smashy, yet also somewhat clean, this is Iggy Pop's personal brand of rock n' roll for a new generation of listeners. Low-end centric and tempered by electronic production, it is full - as ever - of righteous anger.

Review: Led Zeppelin's legacy remains undiminished after all this time, setting a new precedent for British hard rock as the 60s dissipated into the 70s and infusing their blues-derived sound with pastoral folk sensibilities through each subsequent album. Die hard Zepp heads will fight tooth and nail over which album is their best, but the landmark IV distills the best qualities of the band into one flawless, eternally iconic album. From the raucous opening salvo of 'Black Dog' and 'Rock & Roll' through the lofty classic 'Stairway To Heaven' right up to the raunchy delta blues and much sampled breakbeat of 'When The Levee Breaks', this is an album which should be etched on the mind of everyone, worldwide. This repress comes on clear wax - one for the collectors as much as those discovering the album for the first time.

Prior to release, Lizzo admitted she wanted to become "this generation's Aretha Franklin"; while she's not at the late soul legend's standard just yet, there's enough on "Cuz I Love You" to suggest that she's going in the right direction. Her vocals are variously confident, powerful, strutting and tender, with the accompanying backing tracks mixing hip-hop and R&B style beats with raucous guitars, bombastic basslines, Daft Punk style synth stabs (think "Robot Rock" and "Technologic") and occasional nods towards more pastoral, semi-acoustic sounds. Above all, though, the album is funky, forthright and hugely entertaining.

Review: Lizzo's ascent to superstar status was confirmed with 2019 major label debut, Cuz I Love You, a set that gleefully joined the dots between pop-rap, R&B, trap, funk and neo soul, with Missy Elliott and Gucci Mane swinging by to lend a hand. Special, whose 12 songs are a tiny fraction of the 170-odd she reportedly wrote and recorded, continues in this vein, offering another entertaining, kaleidoscopic romp that pairs killer grooves, recognisable sample lifts (the Beastie Boys on the controversial 'Gurrlz' and Coldplay's 'Yellow' on the set-closing oddball fantasy 'Coldplay') and Lizzo's typically strong sung and rapped vocals. There are far more hits than misses, with recent single 'About Time Now' sounding like a long-lost Chic classic and the sound of summer 2022.

Review: Today, what does it mean to form relationships and love each other, IRL? That's exactly what British singer-songwriter Mahalia's latest album attempts to answer, having been inspired by a traumatic breakup and period in therapy. Broader in style than her earlier work, one might read cognitive dissonance, double-consciousness, or a post-breakup divided selfhood into this album; whether that's reflected in the tick-box conditionality of spectacular relationships on the track 'Terms And Conditions', or the inevitable consequences of this in the r&b-swangy 'Cheat' or the critical reconciliation of 'Hey Stranger'. Smooth but shaded throughout, this is the sound of Mahalia working through her demons and restructuring her idea of what real love is.

Indie/Alternative
Review: The sophomore studio album of American indie pop band The Marias, Submarine comes as the sequel to their debut record Cinema, and the trequel to the 'Superclean' EP. Preceded by the lead single 'Run Your Mouth', the album is a representation of solitude and exploration; in the band's own words, the act of choosing to be alone and listening to what the heart needs and not what it wants. The band's preferred mode of representing this visually is cryptic underwater videography; lyrically and sonically, we find ourselves submerged in vats of slick, glossy funk, amid lyrical themes of conflict avoidance and gossip; both serve as effective conduits through which we may find ourselves dancing and reflecting at the same time.

Review: Melanie Martinez has achieved a lot since breaking through in 2015 with her debut album CRY BABY. 2019's K-12 was a landmark project for the then-24-year-old singer-songwriter, and now she returns with her bold, highly anticipated follow-up, PORTALS. With a savvy handle on teasing her projects through her socials, Martinez has drawn her fans into the world of this new album around themes of rebirth, growing embryos and eggs incubating in forests. Ambitious and rigorous in its 360 presentation, this is another step on for one of the most intriguing artists of her generation - the huge impact of the release is absolutely guaranteed.

Review: American singer and songwriter Janelle Monae has been invigorating the world of hip-hop and r&b for well over a decade now with a series of well-received and still oft-referenced albums. The Age of Pleasure is her fourth and has been a long time coming for fans. The eight-time GRAMMY Award nominee has an inimitable style and visionary sound that often comes steeped in important social commentary. Monae herself is unwavering in her activism for social justice and the LGBTQIA+ community and this album shows she's just as fiery in the studio across two sides of wax that feature guests like Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, CKay, Sister Nancy and even the one and only Grace Jones.

Review: American singer and songwriter Janelle Monae dropped her second album The Electric Lady back in 2013 and it was a fine follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut she broke through with in 2010. Critics again fawned over its songwriting and progressive soul style with influences of hip-hop, gospel, jazz, rock, pop and reggae. Dystopic cyborg concepts again defined the album with genre experience and plainspoken words exploring plenty of personal and emotional territory with guest appearances from high-profile names such as Miguel, Erykah Badu, Solange and Prince.

Review: One of the most surprising things about the new Paulo Nutini album is quite how much the opening track, 'Afterneath', doesn't sound much like Paulo Nutini. In fact, we're getting into Arab Strap territory: a slightly sinister, certainly-dark spoken word short-sharp-stab of reality, and - in this case - Tarantino movie samples. Perhaps a product of our times, where even comparatively mainstream artists can't help but vent a little menacing nihilism at what the hell is happening out there, everywhere.

Of course, to describe Nutini as a 'mainstream artist' is pretty unfair by today's standards. Yes, this is a guy who anyone can listen to and enjoy, releasing his fourth studio effort on Atlantic Records. But the Scotsman remains a truly artiste, conjuring memories of golden age rock 'n' roll music sadly often committed to memory these days. Taking elements of folk, blues, heavy rock, and soul, it's a heart on sleeve gem.

Review: Following their illustrious return to form via the fantastic sixth full-length This Is Why at the start of 2023, pop-punk/rock phenomenon Paramore are to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their self-titled fourth LP with a tangerine double vinyl reissue (likely inspired by frontwoman Hayley Williams' iconic dye-job of choice). Originally released in 2013, rendering this decade celebration a tad late, the album was the first from the group following the departure of Josh and Zac Farro (with the latter eventually re-joining in 2016) and sonically marked their first turn away from their classification as emo-tinged pop-punks and towards the full scale powerpop powerhouse they would morphed into, with both the Grammy award-winning 'Ain't It Fun' and 'Still Into You' being certified double platinum since release.

Review: Grammy-nominated rockers Rival Sons punch hard on their latest album - perhaps harder than they have before. But then that's exactly the outfit's modus, with guitarist Scott Holiday making it clear that the band are resolutely determined to progress, develop, step up, and push forward with every effort they bestow on us. To say that's audible when casting an ear over their back catalogue would be an understatement, not that preceding efforts like Hollow Bones, Great Western Valkyrie and Feral Roots weren't all commendable. Nevertheless, there's definitely growth evident when taking a listen now compared with back then. Running from full throttle, sweat inducing, guitar-fuelled adrenalin in song form, through to sweeping and grandiose tracks and onto more reflective acoustic moments, in world that often feels slightly lacking in terms of real modern rock greats, this is one example of where you can still find plenty of life.

Review: Rudimental's third full-length, "Toast To Our Differences", was originally slated for release back in September, but ended up being delayed. So was it worth the wait? It's certainly a colourful, vibrant and expansive affair, with the quartet drawing on a far wider palette of influences than were evident on their previous albums. Check, for example, the title track's glistening, South African style tropical pop, the piano-powered cheeriness of "These Days", the soaring power pop of previous single "Sun Comes Up" and the auto-tune heavy EDM-house stomp of "Scared of Love". Given their superstar status, it's unsurprising to see an impressive cast list of guests and collaborators - Major Lazer, Rita Ora and Ladysmith Black Mambazo included - while this "Deluxe Edition" includes a trio of extra tracks.

Review: Australian singer-songwriter Sia - formerly the voice of chill maestros Zero 7 - is a real pop gem who directed and co-wrote the musical film Music. She penned 10 new tunes for the occasion, with the best of them making the cut here next to songs inspired by the film such as the Dua-Lipa co-written 'Saved My Life.' Largely pop in style with undercurrents of electropop, reggae, EDM and R&B, these are accessible songs that bounce with joy and exuberance. The title track in all its sweeping cinematic glory will likely be the standout for many.

Review: Australian singer-songwriter Sia adds to her indelible repertoire with her tenth full-length studio album, Reasonable Woman. Preceded by singles 'Gimme Love' and 'Dance Alone', this album marks a turn to form for the singer and visionary, whose prior sweats include This Is Acting - which marked a temporary egoless phase, having been made up entirely of songs she wrote and composed for other artists, including Labrinth and Diplo - and Music, which accompanied a full-length musical drama film also directed, with a complementary album, by the artist. Having been waiting in the wings for at least four years now, Reasonable Woman is as surreal a set of pop ballads as our imaginations would permit, employing bubblegum aesthetics and mysterious, identity-masking wardrobe on the visual side of things.

Featuring collaborations with an array of notable artists including Chaka Khan, Paris Hilton, Tierra Whack, Labrinth and Kylie Minogue, it's poised to deliver a fresh and dynamic sound, catchy melodies and innovative production alongside Sia's signature emotive vocals and should solidify Sia's status as one of pop music's most compelling and influential artists.

Review: Skrillex (Sonny Moore) is back with a bang - or rather, two. Don't Get Too Close is his second album in as many days, immediately following the desirous Quest For Fire (it was dropped the following day, making up a duet of LPs). A similar cast of characters accompanies the acclaimed producer on his quest for creative innovation as 'Quest For Fire' - but this one is more introspective and eclectic, blending emo rap, urban pop, and memecore with Moore's signature bass-heavy production. A willingness to keep up with the times is clear, despite Skrillex's emergence in an older 2010s era: production collabs with Gud, Corbin, Lido, PinkPantheress, Virtual Riot and Danny L Harle accompany cameo features from drained starlets like Yung Lean and Bladee and regular Skrillex-adjacent favourites like Justin Bieber, Chief Keef and Swae Lee.

Made with a gigantic cast list of producers and guest vocalists - Aitch, Burna Boy, Headie One, H.E.R, Tiana Major9, Yebba, Fred Gibson and MJ Cole included - the set includes some of his most thoughtful and incisive lyrics to date, as well as some particularly ear-catching mutations of grime that will further solidify his place as one of Britain's most important artists of the 21st century. Yes, it does include more nods towards pop music - he's a Glastonbury headliner after all - but the beats remain tough.

Review: There was a time when Atlantic was one of the foremost house labels in the game, and that was back in the 1990s when artists like Kerri Chandler were defining the deep New Jersey sound. If you didn't know, Three Generations is actually one of his aliases - one that only ever spawned one tune, and this is it, featuring Chevell. It's an absolute classic of the time with the garage swing, the emotive vocals and the silky synths over a nice taught bassline as well as the sound of a needle scratching across the track which was to convey the pain Kerri was feeling at the time after the murder of his then-girlfriend. A true bit of house history.

Review: Following their draconic sixth studio album Sealed And Icy, US megapop superstars Twenty One Pilots share their whopping, driving new album Clancy, marking the end of the multi-album narrative first introduced in the band's breakthrough album Blurryface. The Columbus, Ohio based duo of Tyler Joseph nad Josh Dun are two of the most successful artists of their generation, owing to their distinct blend of quick-quipping raps and stadium-bound electronic rock production. If lead single 'Overcompensate' is anything to go by, Clancy will continue to regale the tale of the Pilots' longstanding concept narrative of Clancy, the central character first articulated in their 2018 album Dema, and deals in themes of angst, powerlessness and (over)compensatory superpowers like psychokinesis endemic to the lore. Get immersed, ultrafans.

Its soundtrack is a larger than life accompaniment that features a vibrant collection of pop and dance tracks that reflect the spirit of Barbie's world. With its infectious beats and bright hooks it is a larger than life listen with plenty of famine attitude front and centre from the likes of Lizzo, Dua Lipa and Nicki Minaj & Ice Spice. Originals from the movie are also included such as the brilliant Ryan Gosling song 'I'm Just Ken'. Review: The latest cinematic, self-aware brand-milking is the new Barbie film, directed by Greta Gerwig and which stars Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. Of course, it wouldn't be as ironically plastic as it could be without contributions from the most eminent artists in modern pop music on the soundtrack - from the likes of Lizzo, Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj, Charli XCX, KAROL G, The Kid LAROI, Khalid, PinkPantheress, GAYLE, Ava Max and FIFTY FIFTY. It didn't quite lean as much as it could have done into hyperpop, but the soundtrack is no less fun, being as glitzy and squeaky-clean as you could possibly get.

Review: Loaded is The Velvet Underground's second-most lauded album, after their scratch-n-sniffable debut LP. Among other things, it's also a cornerstone in the genre of extremely literal rock album covers, depicting a velvet red smoke wafting from an underground railway station. The album's title was an allusion to the fact that it was intended to be an appealing record, solely for radio play, hence it being 'Loaded' with hits. Glorious gems such as 'Sweet Jane' bound forward with TVU's usual euphemistic, ironic optimism, and this reissue is sure to nail the LP's full-bodied sound once more.

Review: Despite keeping to their pattern of releasing records on a triennial basis, 'A Deeper Understanding' shows that The War On Drugs have neither been slacking nor lost momentum in the long wait. Following 2014's stunning and ardently introspective 'Lost In The Dream', the new album sees Adam Granduciel and co. continue to explore themes of loneliness within the framework of their cinematic Americana sound. Highlights such as the euphoric catharsis of 'Holding On' and the pensive 'Strangest Thing' are evidence of a beautifully accomplished album by a group who appear to be gaining a deeper understanding not only of the experience of pain, but of who they are as a band.

Review: The War on Drugs have pleased fans by tightening up their sound somewhat on this newest album, I Don't Live Here Any More. This firth studio long player was proceed by stadium sized singalong rock song 'I Don't Live Here Anymore' and follows it up with music that celebrates life. Bandleader Adam Granduciel is in fine form with daydreaming verses and soul-stirring choruses that are never less than epic. There are a wealth of thrills to be had here for fans old and new and the most common line about the records is that the Philadelphia band sound more like themselves than ever.

Review: It was always a pretty weird idea for Weezer to turn their attention on Vivaldi's violin concertos, The Four Seasons, and release a four-part EP series inspired by those classical landmarks. An out of the blue concept given this Rivers Cuomo-led outfit aren't exactly famed for waxing lyrical about the legendary work.

Nevertheless, fans should not be put off, nor should they expect to find a collection of tracks that look to rework Vivaldi via geek surf rock. Well, OK, maybe two of the songs here do exactly that - 'Opening Night' and 'Lawn Chair'. Or at least they both have string and guitar movements that look to pay homage to the master composer. But, for the most part, this is Weezer doing what Weezer do: sounding very much like Weezer.

Review: Yes' magnum opus, Fragile. A cornerstone in the genre of prog rock, and arguably the instant go-to for anyone even so much as vaguely desiring a deeper peruse of the genre once they're done smelling Pink Floyd's farts. Full of proverbial lyrics and intriguing (not to mention masterfully mixed) instrumental choices - Rick Wakeman's keys are a highlight - the album cuts an overall clean and fantastical sound, usually oscillating between upbeat prog-funk ('Roundabout') and mathy ballads ('South Side Of The Sky'). Reissued directly from the horse's mouth, we can guarantee top-tier audio quality on this one.
