Acido 22
Acido 22 (12")
Cat: ACIDO 022. Rel: 09 Jun 16

Ambient/Drone
Track 1 (12:11)
Track 2 (11:06)
Review: Any new 12" from Gerard Hanson is worthy of note, but there's something extra-exciting about this one. Fantastically, it sees him don the familiar Convextion alias - first used way by in 1995 - for the first time since 2007 for the latest 12" on Dynamo Dreesen's ever excellent Acido label. Boasting two long, slowly unfurling concoctions, Acido 22 is up there with his greatest work (and that's saying something). Thrillingly, it eschews the deep, spacey electro sound with which he made his name, instead turning to beat-less ambience; kind of Convextion does Pete Namlook, if you will. Both tracks are suitably sublime, with stretched-out chords, classical-style melodic movements, and memorable tunes that develop organically over the course of 11 or 12 minutes. Making great ambient music is hard, but Hanson knows exactly what he's doing.

Soundtracks For No Film Vol 1
Cat: ACIDO 012. Rel: 16 Apr 13

Ambient/Drone
Madteo - "Science Friction"
291out - "Urania (Titoli Di Coda)"
SVN - "Low"
Dresvn - "Moonwalk"
Doc L Junior - "Modul 32"
Review: Soundtracks For No Film Vol. 1 is a rather charming mini album of outer-spatial, conceptual electronics from the always on point Acido Records label, seemingly tasking contributors to deliver arrangements worthy of soundtracking film. Madteo sets the tone with "Science Fiction" a haunting spectral cut with little regard for beat structures that could feasibly sit in alongside his brilliant LP for Sahko last year. Alongside this, the A Side features three short form productions, with 291out's "Urania (Titoli Di Coda)" the highlight, sounding very much like the music you might hear during the end credits of a forgotten 80s sci-fi drama. Complementing this, sometime Sex Tags Mania artist Doc L Junior is given the whole of the B Side to draw out an expansive, epic synthscapes "Modul 2".

Review: While it is easy to mistake Porn Sword Tobacco for a product of the recent wave of deconstructed techno-not-techno, the artist has, in reality, been present but riding below radar since the early 00s. Real name Henrik Jonsson, the man has been doing his thing since the very beginning and it took a label as well-curated as Berlin's Acido to bring him into the limelight. Dynamo Dreesen's imprint is a constant source of quality electronics, whether that be lo-fi house or machine drum punk, and this latest double pack from Porn Sword himself is a perfect encapsulation of everything the label stands for. "Track 1" and "Track 2", which both receive a side each on which to develop, are loose and explorative structures that only gain a definitive groove by the middle of the B-side, but the build-up is almost better than the climax itself. The second disc follows similarly dubbed-out pastures, and each sound is engulfed in a distant haze; "Track 4" is perhaps the best piece of ambient to hit our shelves this year, and it's fair to say that this whole extended EP should come as an instant buy. Magnificent stuff - dreamy and imperceptible in every way.

My House Is Not Your House III
VARIOUS
Cat: ACIDO 027. Rel: 29 May 18

Deep House
PG Sounds - "Acid" (part 3 - mix 1) (6:23)
TVA - "Light Trace" (4:27)
Chance Encounter (1:44)
Roadworker - "Bomag Muzak" (3:15)
Arrrgh - "Outro" (0:59)
Dynamo Dreesen & Porn Sword Tobacco - "Wormhole" (5:15)
TVA - "Crackled Crossed Lines" (4:16)
Telephones - "Pok-A-Tok" (Sundown mix) (6:03)
Review: Dynamo Dreesen's ACIDO imprint could not be functional without these sporadic mini-compilations from his co-workers and compatriots. The Berlin imprint, still waving the flag up high in the name of GOOD electronic music, returns with the third helping of My House Is Not Your House, a series showcasing the imprint's well-known talents and less established new entries, in what is always an indirect 'house' coating. PG Sounds kicks off with an intricate percussion pattern called "Acid", while newcomer TVA slaps down a fine drum groove surrounded by all sorts of quirky melodies, and there are plenty more deviations from the likes of Chance Encounter, Roadworker, or Arrrgh. Even Dreesen himself appears, alongside port Sword Tobacco, along with Fett-Burger's Telephones moniker. Unmissable, as per usual.
