Malfunction (Adjust)
Malfunction (Despair)
Review: After the disco-led Fever album as 2562, Dave Huismans returns with more typical club fare as AMUS. "Malfunction" is a dense roller, its heavy drums and offbeat rhythm inhabiting the same bass-meets-techno space as Martyn. That's not to suggest that Huismans is a copycat and the track's centre piece is a spooky synth riff that may have been recycled from an old house track. He provides an even bigger surprise on "Malfunction (Despair)". This version features broken beats and haunting synths that hang like barbed wire on a beachside fence. Like the waves crashing onto the sand below, Huismans then unleashes a bass that rumbles with all of nature's force.

Ain't It Love
Review: Stepping up with his second album for 50 Weapons, Addison Groove is once again mining the rhythmic excitement of juke and footwork and working it into his blue-hued melodic headspace. Standout vocal cut '"Just You" is a prime example of the upbeat flavour across the album, while "11th" matches the plush harmonies with moodier switch-ups, and "The Spirit Level" drops the tempo into a house bump that lends itself to the illustrious synth sweeps. Typically though the beats are in that twitchy middle ground between dubstep and footwork, leaving plenty of space for razor-sharp constructions and dazzling edits as best demonstrated on the dynamic acid roll of "Space Apples". Chaos abounds on the B Side where Developer's frantic side is shown via "Promiscuous" whilst the tightly wound "Pulstar" is quite hypnotic.

Melody Maker
Review: More body slamming material here from Addison Groove. Direct dancefloor business, the title track "I Go Boom" shakes and sasses with a tight dancehall stomp that's balanced beautifully with soft minor keys in a way that DJ Gregory might have done back in the day (only a lot heavier). "Button Moon" takes the heaviness level up several notches with more steppy beats and a fine acid house flavour. "Oversize Clip", meanwhile, nods to the dubstep heads with a deep and minimal 808 riddim. "Melody Maker" finishes the show on a deeper note. Timeless, jacking and sweetened with a sexy groove, Addison Groove can do no wrong right now.

I Go Boom 1 (DJ Rashad & Doc Daneeka remix)
I Go Boom 2 (DJ Rashad & Doc Daneeka remix)
Review: As one of the more overtly juke-heavy tracks on his recent EP for 50 Weapons, it's not surprising to see DJ Rashad snapped up to deliver a delicate twist on the staggering original and turn it into a limber wriggler with the trademark alien juke patterns expressed through soft drops of percussion. The sweet-natured chords get a full airing across the duration of the track this time around, but more than anything it's the speed that brings about the greatest change to Addison Groove's bruising original. Doc Daneeka meanwhile is on hand to drop a deadly concoction of deep house and original breakbeat ruggedness, creating a rousing vibe out of his own re-appropriation of the melodies over the tight and rolling rhythm.

Review: 50 Weapons indulge Tony Williams's expansive take on current dance culture as Addison Groove. Put simply, Transistor Rhythm looks gorgeous, with design heavily indebted to Williams' clear passion for the Roland 808 and the tracks spread gloriously across two slabs of thick vinyl (there's an even beefier 3xLP version out too!). Musically, Transistor Rhythm explores the same areas of crisp, finely sculpted rhythms that have graced Swamp 81 and 3024 in recent times, with the smart sample usage on tracks such as "Night To Remember" complemented by a clutch of guest spots.

Review: Following the sad news of Rashad's passing, this latest single from the ever-productive Addison Groove takes on a more poignant nature as the late footwork legend guests on the second track. That the track is called "U Been Gone" only adds to the emotional weight of it, not to mention the wistful keys and yearning vocal lick. Elsewhere Addison Groove is on typically fiery form, from the rave baiting whiplash of "Push It" to the weighty bassbin busting badness of "Dat Ass". The samples are beyond cheeky in their recognisability, and it matters not a jot when the music kicks as hard as this.

Addison Groove - "Allaby" (4:36)
Errorsmith - "Airbag" (5:30)
Review: Here's something to excite all those who like their dance music to come with a heavy dose of funk: a split release from 50 Weapons that boasts material from Bristol-based floor-slayer Addison Groove and scene veteran Erik "Errorsmith" Wiegand. The latter is in a combative mood, delivering a rave-friendly chunk of analogue madness that comes complete with colossal build-ups, twisted acid lines, bouncy electronics and ghetto-tech-inspired intensity. While rather good, it lacks the energy and punch of Addison Groove's contribution, the throbbing "Allaby". Typically, it sits somewhere between the relentless jack of juke, the cut-up appeal of ghetto-tech, and the rolling goodness of tech-funk. However you describe the track, it's a bit of a banger.

Ol Man Ek
Review: Bringing a measured kind of juke menace to the 50 Weapons camp, regular attraction Addison Groove this time links up with fellow Bristol bass maven Sam Binga for some short and snappy cuts that explore diverse corners of electronica while all riding that hyped-up tempo. "Rzor" keeps things strictly rhythmic with its rush of 808 beats moving through pitch tweaks and rubbing up against found sound percussion. "Thr3id" gets twisted up in melodic stabs and the kind of gnarly acid spits you might find on Drukqs-era Aphex, bouncing off steady central motifs in order to fire off as many drum machine samples as possible in a three minute time frame. "11th" is even further into deploying intricate melodic darts that zip through the rapid fire beats, delicate chimes offset by dreamy synths and stuttering samples. "Ol Man EK" whips all these feelings up into a perfect summation track, capturing the bittersweet-ness of early jungle and vintage deep house in amongst a positively futuristic flurry of percussion.

Review: Coming on like boogie for the apocalypse, Anstam isn't pulling any punches on this new EP on 50 Weapons. There's a definite funk to the industrial beat and hooky lead synth that propels "Intuit". It just so happens that it's placed in the hands of a madman who sets the pitch off on tangents while flinging borderline disharmonious diversions into the mix as well. "Feed The Pigs" is no less easy on your senses, with a rapidly disassembling beat and erratic synth washes. "Whiskey" makes sounds like it was maybe an attempt to make a sweet-natured track. Instead the brilliant horror of Anstam's musical vision gets woven into the core, much to our delight.

Review: Under his Anstam guise, Lars Stoewe seems to specialize in the sort of moody, hard-to-pigeonhole fare that flits in the crawl space between murky IDM, experimental dubstep and nightmarish ambience. Stones and Woods, his second album, builds on the formula first explored on his 2011 debut, Dispel Dances. Typically, it refuses to sit still, showcasing a trademark style that often puts clandestine atmospherics above rhythmic naval-gazing. Ironically, it's when he melds the two - such as on the distorted live drums and odd noises of "Me & Them", or high-speed "Handsome Dances The Dance" - that Stones and Woods really hits home.

Review: After the barnstorming Dispel Dances long player of last year, Anstam returns with another album of subversive beat science for 50 Weapons, fusing wild sample digging with bold synthesis across a range of tempos. Each new track presents unexpected delights, moving from the monolithic 80s funk stylings of "Hopes Soliloquy" to the schizoid vocal jazz-beat psych out "Me & Them" and then on to the drunken synth warbles of "Hearts Soliloquy". The breadth of ideas that Anstam covers on this LP, as with his last one, is quite staggering, hitting on a rich well of originality with every new tune.

Moderat - "Gita" (Anstam Dustified dance edit)

Review: This year has seen Lars Stoewe put aside his widely recognised Anstam project to work on a straighter approach to electronic production under the Anno Stamm alias, gracing All City and Meakusma with some fine releases. A return to Modeselektor's 50 Weapons for Stoewe signals the return of Anstam and this hand stamped 12" sees him remix Moderat and dear friend Siriusmo. The A Side features a self styled Dustified Dance Edit of new Moderat single "Gita" which demonstrates Anstam's production palette is eminently capable of lopsided pop music, whilst the accompanying Bustified Breaks Edit of Siriusmo's "Stinky Wig" features a more familiar side to Stoewe.

Review: This surprise debut album from German mystery men Anstam should be a cause for celebration. Having first made waves between 2007 and 2009 with a trio of bleak 12" singles that pitted contemporary grime and dubstep rhythms against classic and contemporary techno sounds, the fiercely secretive duo have released very little since. Dispel Dances continues that fruitful exploration of bass music's past and present, sneaking in Detroitian tech-jazz ("To All The Voices", "Handsome Talks The Talk") and hectic, next-level dubstep-jazz ("In The Bell Run") amidst the dubwise rhythms, basement atmospheres and smoky Berlin textures. The results are every bit as impressive as you'd expect.

Review: Bambounou again proves he is a reliable source for straight up dancefloor music devoid of pretence and full of quality. The producer's French house side shines through on this fourth release for 50Weapons, but he still holds on to the ghetto vibe he's shown on his ClekClekBoom releases, while keeping it deep. "Feel Like This" features a skipping house beat with a repetitive vocal and evolving background textures, while "Onto This" is a fuller alternative thanks to upfront chords and extra percussion.

Centrum is his second LP, and sees him in a typically inventive mood, offering up a range of techno tracks blessed with curiously off-kilter rhythms, crackly found sounds, tumbling melodies and jumpy electronics. While there are dancefloor moments - see the Detroit-influenced, outer-space grooves of "Fire Woman", spiraling psychedelia of "S.A.C" and the kickdrum-propelled thump of "Excluding Natalia" - many of the more potent moments are far more influenced by IDM and ambient.

Review: Across releases for Sound Pellegrino, ClekClekBoom and Youngunz, Bambounou has shown himself to be one of France's brightest new talents in the crossover world between techno and bass music - his debut album for Modeselektor's 50 Weapons stable has been keenly anticipated, and thankfully, it doesn't put a foot wrong. As well combining the raw bass physicality of producers like Objekt and Digital Mystikz in tracks like "Any Other Service" and "Capsule Process", the broken techno rhythms of producers like Shed in "Data" and "Splaz", the bright UKF hybrid styles of DVA and Champion and footwork inspired sampling on "Mass" and "Let Me Get", Orbiting offers a uniquely French take on bass, with "Great Escape" and "Challenger" even giving the palette of 90s French touch a contemporary spin. Easily the best 50 Weapons album this year, which in a year that has seen Shed and Addison Groove provide long players for the imprint is no mean feat.

Review: Rocking up to his regular home at 50 Weapons, Bambounou brings yet more of his playful, experimental bass music to bear with this rock solid three tracker. There's a great focus on wild, disorientating noises hammered into solid rhythms, whether it's the metallic swirls that slop around the insides of "Filled", or the jerky tap drips that inject the funk into "Brim". Aside from the spicy sounds, there's also plenty to hold onto, not least with the whopping great chord stabs that also inhabit "Brim". Having said that, "Boarder" is more intent on plunging you into a bizarre soundworld of bold VHS synth drones and snaking percussion that seems intent on dodging the groove at all costs.

Take It Out On Me
Review: Later this month, 50 Weapons will round out another fine year with a mix CD of 2013 highlights pulled apart by their Parisian correspondent Jeremy Guindo-Zegiestowski aka the always fun to pronounce Bambounou. Before that, the Frenchman himself lines one last 12" transmission from 50 Weapons and like his previous work on the label, Bambounou's class shines through. If you were hoping "Ignition" was Bam's take on the R Kelly classic, you'll be disappointed. But chin up, son, as it is a fine example of lopsided and stripped back techno. Complementing this, "Take It Out On Me" is a proper DJ tool that swerves ever deeper down the bass/techno wormhole.

Review: It's fitting that Benjamin Damage is the last artist to release an album on 50 Weapons. Apart from owners Modeselektor, he was also one of the first to feature on the label. Obsidian sees Damage straddle a fine line between the melodic and the atmospheric, the dance floor-heavy and the visceral. This is audible on the title track, where spacey chords are introduced over a rolling rhythm and on "Monolith", an arrangement that sees Damage fuse tribal beats with fragile, angelic hooks. Even though much of the album revolves around this interplay, there are also moments when the balance tips in the favour of the esoteric, and the lithe break beats and sensuous ambience of "Pulse Width" and "Shimmer" bring an end to Damage's relationship with the label in fine, introspective style.

Review: 50 Weapons' Welsh correspondent Benjamin Damage continues the explicit flirtation with techno explored on debut album Heliosphere with the two track 4600 EP. Intriguingly it's the first tangible results of O'Shea's restorative endeavours with a huge ETI 4600 synth, having spent some 18 months repairing it back to working condition with a synth-obsessive in Suffolk. Given the lengths he went, you'd think Damage would be happy but no there he is on the cover, scowling whilst perched on a vintage Italian scooter. Still though stern faces suit the mood of the music within with "ET Rework" unashamedly aimed at the darker main room techno floors. B Side cut "Nebula" meanwhile, offers something more cerebral in it's skipping percussion and faltering analogue bleeps.

Delirium Tremens (Benjamin Damage remix)
Review: There is no doubt that "Tremens" is a worthy addition to Modeselektor's 50-strong collection of 'weapons'. The UK producer's own 'long version' is a peak-time slammer; based on oversized, grainy kicks, it features hissing percussion and analogue riffs howling past, which act as a prelude for the mammoth chord sequences that veer into the kind of eerie sounds that emanate from Detroit. By contrast, the Robert Hood version sounds relatively sedate. The Detroit producer takes musical chords, adds in some robotic vocals and underpins his arrangement with heavy rolling drums that are the antithesis of the visceral minimalism he is associated with.

SCNTST is something of a prodigal young talent from Germany, previously appearing on a pair of singles for Boys Noize. Here he crafts a multifaceted version of "010x" that moves through myriad moods and headspaces from calming pad drenched lulls to breakbeat-fuelled roughness, but always marching ahead with a technoid sense of purpose. Meanwhile Truncate brings a more delineated kind of workout that sports the hallmark focus of the L.A. based producer. Po-faced drums and hypnotic melodic hooks meet with more gentle ambient washes to create a flawless slice of contemporary techno.

Review: With his collaborative album with Doc Daneeka still ringing in our collective ears, future RBMA participant Benjamin Damage delivers his latest solo missive. A far cry from the UKF inspired bass which characterised the producer's first releases, "Swarm" sees him deliver a brutal slab of uncompromising techno in the Marcel Dettmann mould, as a throbbing 4/4 kick is propelled along at a rate of knots by a dry arpeggio and severe dub chords. "Headache" meanwhile swaps brute force for military precision, as the sound of ascending aerial drones is accompanied by threadbare percussion in the form of a heavyweight tool made with the sole purpose of delivering its devastating payload on the dancefloor. With these two tracks, Mr Damage more than lives up to his moniker.

Review: The inhabitants of Swansea have a lot to shout about these days. Not only is their football team riding high in the Premier League, but the city also boasts the originators of a sound dubbed "deep rave" - a suitably warm, muted fusion of old skool rave influences, deep house, UK funky, tropical and murky Berlin techno. Here, said pioneers - hometown heroes Benjamin Damage and Doc Daneeka - deliver their debut album for the mighty 50 Weapons imprint. They Live! is a suitably deep and lovable collection of bass music given their distinctive twist, with extra warmth provided by vocalist Abigail Wyles. Deeper, headphone-friendly moments ("Halo", "Juggernaut", "Battleships") are offset by a string of robust, peaktime bombs, not least a fine version of scene anthem "Creeper" and the eye-popping "Deaf Siren".

Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka - "Kansas" (8:25)
Bicep - "Closing Sequence" (6:03)
Review: Modeselektor always promised that their 50 Weapons imprint would cease operations once it hit a half-century of releases. Given that this is the much-admired 42nd release, it would seem that the end is nigh. Naturally, they'll keep dancing till the bitter end, and here present two tried-and-tested floor-fillers from Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka, and Bicep. The latter's "Closing Sequence" naturally doffs a cap to rave-era sweatiness, but boasts beats, melodies and electronic textures more reminiscent of the short-lived progressive breaks sound (look it up, kids). Damage and Daneeka, meanwhile, lay down a deliciously dubby, hypnotic chunk of Germanic tech-house built around bustling, bouncy beats, relentless organ loops and shimmering, swirling synthesizers.

Review: 50 Weapons aren't half rolling out the bangers as they surge towards their pre-ordained climax (the German imprint's 50th and final 12" will drop at the end of the year). Here, they serve up two more colossal chunks of booming, floor-friendly techno from the combined talents of Benjamin Damage and Truncate. It's Damage who sets the tone, skillfully fusing wayward, end-of-days atmospherics and a whisper of 303-abuse with thunderous kick-drums. On the flip, Truncate goes in equally as hard, offering a more fluid-sounding - but no less intense - take on European techno, with fizzing hi-hats and clipped electronic melodies creating a typically mind-altering mood.

Review: After truly impressing with his swerve in sonic direction across some of our favourite labels this year in Hessle, Rush Hour and 50 Weapons, the excellent Cosmin TRG deemed to grace the latter imprint with this much awaited debut album. And for anyone who dipped into the Romanian's recent output, Simulat will delight on many levels. The opening dusty strains of "Amor Y Otros" sets the standard, cleverly layering sounds and thumping rhythms in a fashion that is expansive yet cohesive, even straying down some thrilling pitch shifted dynamics. Previous 50 Weapons single "Fizic" features and its hazy melodic treatment of chords and synths is an obvious highlight, but there's plenty more on offer. "Ritmat" seemingly succeeds in marrying the rough drum skeleton of dubstep with ascendant house rhythms whilst "Want You To Be" immerses your senses in a deep fog of crackling ethereality, embellished with haunting vocals and militant kicks. Brief moments of calm are interspersed with more familiar Cosmin TRG tackle on a twelve track album that might not contain the immediate gratification of A Universal Crush, instead its real charms reveal after repeat listens.

De Dans
Review: Fresh from ruling the Red Bull tent at this year's Sonar Festival, the ever excellent Cosmin TRG adds to his annus mirabulus. We've waxed lyrical about the Romanian's deviations towards a distinctly unique take on the techno thump for Rush Hour and Hessle this year, and both tracks here continue to demonstrate his growing talent for productions in this area. "Fizic" arrives in a swell of purple synth flourishes, finding a bumping low end groove that fights its way through a relentless shower of neon stabs and rough industrial textures. Complementing this is the more euphoria inducing "De Dans" which takes full effect when the skittering array of kicks and snares drop into place. The playful way that subaqueous synth lines are introduced adds to the energy filled sensation. In a word, big!

Review: Plans from the 50 Weapons label to offer up Gordian, Cosmin TRG's excellent LP from earlier this year, for rework and reshape seem to be edging further towards outright unpredictability with each subsequent release. Launching the series with a remix from Marcel Dettmann was a pretty standard decision from the label, but it was complemented by a jaw droppingly unusual take on "Noise Code" from jungle recyclist Lee Gamble. The inspired commissions continue apace here with remixes from Legowelt and Demdike Stare's Miles Whittaker occupying a side each of a twelve. "Terminus Abrupt," the closing track from Gordian is focus of Legowelt's attention who seemingly expands on the moment of melodic warmth that appears late in the original, whilst Whittaker tackles "Noise Code" trudging up all manner of sonic grit with menacing intent.

New Structures For Loving (Marcel Dettmann remix)
Noise Code (Lee Gamble remix)
Review: The Romanian hotshot gets his work reshaped by two of the best contemporary remixers. Marcel Dettmann is best known for his industrial-tinged techno, but his remix of the title track casts a different light on him. Shards of delicate, metallic percussion provide the basis for Dettmann to deliver fragile melodies and a mysterious electronic groove. It's an impressive about turn for the German producer, but not quite as jaw-droppingly unusual as Lee Gamble's version of "Noise Code". There, razor sharp hats soar in over a pacey, tracky rhythm that stops, starts and collapses to reveal a wobbly, cartoonish bassline. Just before the end, Gamble lets the track descend into abstract mushiness, a fitting end to an idiosyncratic remix package.

Review: Having gate crashed the scene back in 2007 with an inspired release on Hessle Audio, Romanian producer Cosmic TRG has since become one of the most in-demand men in electronic music. His productions have already graced such hyped imprints as Rush Hour Direct Current, Naked Lunch, Immerse and Hemlock. Here, he pops up on 50 Weapons with a decidedly mature second album. Where his early material was bold, brash and bass-heavy, Gordial is a lot more considered and, dare we sat it, introspective. Built around glitchy rhythms and glacial melodies, it's a warm, atmospheric and tactile full-length that proudly wears its techno, IDM and ambient influences on its sleeve.

Review: Although he has flirted with dubstep, garage and house since his first appearance in 2007, Cosmin Nicolae's transformation into one of contemporary techno's most interesting figures was completed when he joined the 50 Weapons fray in 2011, releasing two twelve inches and an excellent debut album in Simulat. His follow up, Gordian, references an ancient myth and the music contained within is just as fantastical as the title suggests. The complex melodic arrangements of his previous album are expanded upon to great effect on tracks like "New Structures For Loving" and "Defeated Hearts Club", recalling the more exciting end of 00s minimal, while tracks like "Gordian", "Desire Is Sovereign" and "To Touch Is To Divert" are as forceful and driving as his Rush Hour releases; once again Cosmin has taken a great leap forward.

Sommer
Review: And so it continues. Cosmin 'TRG' Nicolae's evolution as an artist has at times seemed like a condensed history of electronic music in reverse. From jungle, bass and break beat to house, electro and techno and now what sounds like his take on Detroit techno, the Romanian could never be accused of standing still. This refusal to succumb to inertia would mean little if every stylistic shift heralded little more than a nod to ingrained narratives and approaches. However, the real beauty of Cosmin's music is that each realignment brings with it a wealth of idiosyncrasies, be it a familiar vocal snippet on his house releases for Rush Hour or now this unusual interpretation of deeper techno. The title track's intro doesn't suggest that Cosmin has plans to worship at the altar of Derrick May or Carl Craig, as it starts with the chime of bells and the whirr of abstract percussion. Suddenly however, a dreamy chord sequence floats in, but it doesn't sound typical thanks to the slightly off beats - a throwback to his recent past- and the rolling snares that have more in common with hard mid-90s German techno and some excellent pitch bent hats. "Sommer" features a similar chord sequence, but Cosmin is quick to double it up, couple it with crashing snares and a delay that gives the arrangement a dynamism that is the common characteristic in his artistically schizophrenic body of work.

Review: Cementing their rep as the busiest cats in electronic music, Modeselektor maintain the 50 Weapons pressure with a quartet of drops from Dark Sky. There have been waves of expectation surrounding the London based trio since they surfaced on the excellent Pictures Music label last year, and the Radius EP shows they can match the hype with aplomb. "Speeding Blue" is vintage 50 Weapons material, devious chords progressing at 45 degrees around expertly layered drum kicks, dropping into heavenly washes at all the right moments. Staying true to its title "Neon" essentially works as a battle of wits between luminescent melodics and a tightly wound marriage of keys, shuffling hi-hats and insistent bass dips whilst fractured shards of vocals add a yearning quality. On the flip "The Lick" continues this interplay between dark and light elements with basement level sub bass contrasting with the glacial vocal coos that flicker beneath a tinned can of tropical fruit 808 flex - that bassline! "Be Myself" rounds off proceedings with what is best described as The Neptunes arising on Swamp81. Pure class.

Review: Peddling releases back and forth between the Black Acre and 50Weapons labels, UK production unit Dark Sky return to Modeselektor's dynamic imprint with four bass heavy cuts. It's easy to imagine Gernot Bronsort and Sebastian Szary's eyes light up as they watched the lathe cut down and into the master copy of Dark Sky's Myriam EP for the first time. The bossy plods and squelchy kicks of "Shutter Speed" are reminiscent of the sounds heard on Modeselektor's earlier works Hello Mom! and Happy Birthday!, while dubbed out and hoovering synths link up with beats made for krumping - a form of street dance - in "Shades". On the flip "Hequon" picks up the pace with a tip-toeing bassline, skipping hi-hats and housey chords while the ghetto jungle percussion and 808 thumps of "Gaddagive" make a fitting backdrop for talkative and uplifting synths.

Duel
Review: It is ironic that just as Marcel Dettmann appears to be branching out from the Ostgut stable, through his mix for Music Man and now this EP for 50 Weapons, he comes out his purest, most refined techno record yet. No one is suggesting that the Berghain resident has split with Ostgut or is neglecting his own MDR label, but it is an undeniable fact that no matter what he releases on, classic 90s techno influences form a key part of his musical DNA. This is audible on "Duel"; functional yet subtle, it owes a debt to the loopy techno of the 90s, caught somewhere between Mills's Purposemaker releases and the UK variant it spawned, as a dense, filtered groove rolls to a backdrop of tight claps and insistent riffing. This being a 2011 release, the tempo is slower than the records it is influenced by, with the drop in bpms lending "Duel" a mushier, groggier feeling. "Deluge" on the other hand, is far closer to its source material. A wiry, squelchy serving of minimal techno, it recalls Dan Bell in pared back, 7th City mode, while its jarring, jack-knifing central riff is every bit as visceral as Robert Hood. Irrespective of where he's putting out music, the purest sounds are at the core of each Dettmann track.

Review: Linux, Dettmann's second EP for 50Weapons, tones down the techno abrasion of his previous missive for the label, with the results considerably easier on the ears. The Berghain resident opts for kooky and linear housey-techno instead, a sound frequenting many of his DJ sets of late. A constant kick drum and croaky bassline lasts the entirety of "Linux" and acts like a revolving door - greeting and chussing various hi-hats, claps, rides and rimshots. On the flip, Dettmann's love for Depeche Mode and Human League synths is clearly evident, as a basic, but slightly varying synths roll through a similar drum machine sequenced arrangement.

Here, they turn to German techno royalty Marcel Dettmann, and fast rising Ilian Tape founders The Zenker Brothers. Dettmann kicks things off with "Activator" - a dark, intoxicating and smoky DJ tool built around shuffling, broken techno rhythms. As for the Zenker Brothers, their "Namuan" mines the world of 1990s loop techno for inspiration, with sweaty handclaps, fizzing electronics and clandestine aural textures riding a bouncy, chunk and formidably bass-heavy groove.

Review: Fifty Weapons arrive with their latest sonic emissive as the mysterious eLan and FaltyDL each take a side on this classy 10 inch. eLan seems to have been plucked from relative obscurity by Modeselektor (he also featured prominently on last year's Modeselektion Vol 1) but the producer certainly knows how to craft a fine instro hop beat with "I Can't Have" laying down woozed out hypnagogic synths over a bumping beat which dovetails nicely with the more frenetic rhythmic leanings of "McGuillicutty Moves" . Falty ups the pace on the other side with some futurist beat action, as "Large Flash" and "I'm Gonna Show You Somthin" both tweak a 2-step bass heavy flex over stuttering melodic and vocal edits.

Review: Modeselektor's label provides a neat soundtrack for two sides of clubbing on its latest release. "Oben" (German for upper floor) is built for the kind of peak-time action its title suggests and sees Fjaak let loose with a slamming, relentless rhythm, heavy drums and a cut-up of the "Amen" break, while a detached vocal witters away in the background. By contrast, "Unten", which is German for 'bottom' - or, in this context, 'the basement' - is more considered. Cavernous, spacious kicks and heavy claps provide the basis for a chord sequence that flits and floats through the arrangement as randomly as conversations at an after party.

Review: Whilst the most recent Modeselektion compilation saw Berlin pair Modeselektor pick from a largely established (if very varied) pool of artists, the latest release on their 50 Weapons labels shows Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary have not lost any of their canny A&R skills for uncovering new talent. The uniquely named Fjaak are a Berlin trio with "futuristic minds but already nostalgic feelings" and as far as we can tell this two track 12" is their debut release. Familiarise yourself with both cuts and you'll understand why Bronsert and Szary scooped Fjaak up, with a their rave ready productions executed on a mixture of hardware and software the sort of club focused music 50 Weapons has made it's name on. As immediate as the title track is, our pick is the tougher techno fix of B Side "Plan A".

Review: According to their label, Fjaak live and sleep in their studio, but whatever about their methodology, it is clear that they are doing something right. The title track is a monstrous affair, based on a gargantuan stepping rhythm and tough breeze block beats as the trio shoot out Landstrumm-esque grating noise. In stark contrast is "The Wind". Deeper and groovier, it centres on breezy chords but retains dance floor clout thanks to the shards of hissing percussion. "Curious" sees Fjaak back to the same kind of territory as "Attack"; the only difference is that this time, the groove is straighter, but the grainy drums are just as relentlessly unforgiving.

Review: The penultimate 50 Weapons release pays tribute to the music of its home town, Berlin. Oddly enough, it plays host to the first release on the label by Rodhad. The Dystopian boss delivers "Oblivion", a raw and noisy analogue workout that calls to mind the sonic extremities of Landstrumm and Vogel, realised against a stepping rhythm. However, the real highlight comes from Fjaak. This Berlin trio, who received their break thanks to releases on 50 Weapons, drop "Super Smash". The track's wailing, diva vocal, techy chords and flowing groove may not be the most innovative, but it'll go a long way to ensuring that the future of Berlin techno is safe in Fjaak's hands.
