A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga" (4:03)
Jack Wilkins - "Red Clay" (4:03)
Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Don (2:10)
Jon (2:30)
Review: Two masters of the free / improvisational jazz form, Don Cherry and Jon Appleton, are rare to come by these days. Both artists are highly sought after and difficult to find on the second-hand market, so a reissue of their work - especially together - is the perfect kind of treat for our Thursday morning tasting sessions. This reissue of "Don" comes in 7" format, and its wonky, spaced-out horns and subtle electronics are every bit as strange and daring as they were back in 1970. "Jon", on the flipside, is just as twisted, and possibly even further out there into the ether. Bloody hell...1970! Highly recommended.

Melodies Record Club 001: Four Tet Selects
Jackie McLean & Michael Carvin - "De I Comahlee Ah" (extended) (12:22)
Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath - "MRA" (6:48)
Review: The cult Melodies International label run by Floating Points and Mafalda starts a new series here. Melodies Record Club will find each curated by a different guest DJ or producer with the first one selected by the always on point Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet. He picks some of the tracks he used to spin at the legendary Plastic People and first up is an extended version of 1975 tune 'De I Comahlee Ah' by jazz stars Jackie McLean and Michael Carvin. Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath takes care of the flip with the big band energy and excellent horn work of 'MRA.'

Short Story From Tabla, Drums & Trumpet (2:11)
Oye Maia (3:01)
Review: Thanks to a plethora of pleasing releases from the likes of Nat Birchall and Michael Grossman, 2019 has been a vintage year for Jazzman's "Jazz 45" series. The last volume of the year comes courtesy of Jai Ho, an occasional studio "supergroup" who initially met by accident in the late 1990s. In fact, A-side "Short Story From Tabla, Drums & Trumpet" was recorded in a single day in 1996. The descriptive title is accurate, with squally, effects-laden trumpet solos riding a killer backing track of military style drum breaks, exotic tabla motifs and toasty double bass. The group met again for another studio day in 2003 and recorded B-side "Oye Maia", a wonderfully lucid and languid mixture of attractive Kalimba melodies, drifting trumpet and shuffling Indian instrumentation.

Rapido (4:52)
Exotic Flavour (5:42)
Review: Jazz N Palms turn out another of their standout re-edit EPs here and the sixth in the series is no less special than the previous five. As ever, the MO is that the London collective offers tidy revisions of all a wide range of jazz and jazz-funk obscurities. This one kicks off with a Bob James style jam full of instrumental funk and then goes on to the glossy samba rhythms and woodblock hits of 'Santa Ana.' There are more languorous sounds on the stretched out solos of 'El Sabe' then the pace picks up for the energetic shuffles of 'El Sabe.' Last but not least is 'Exotic Flavour,' a freeform cut with wandering bass and steamy sax lines.

Review: Next up for BBE is a package of remixes that invites several key artists to add their own spin to Jazzanova's superb reimagining of Sam Sanders's iconic 'Face at my Window'. Kyoto Jazz Massive are first to tackle the single which first appeared on 'Strata Records - The Sound of Detroit - Reimagined by Jazzanova' and bring some intimate jazz clubs vibes. After a Yoshi edit and version with vocalists Sean Haefli, musclecars bring a touch of New York and Chicago house classicism to their version. Both remixers bring new perspective to this timeless classic.

Review: Izipho Soul is a gold standard of high quality and heart aching soul music. JDs Time Machine ft Cleveland P Jones is another great mix of indie soul and Jazz in animated picture sleeve. Both of these magnificent versions of this lovely track are a few years old but are making their vinyl debut here. 'Kiss Of Freedom' is a grand affair with golden, high class production with noodling bass, sunny chords and a soaring vocals backed with some great harmonies. The long version draws the whole thing out for even more extended bliss.

Keyboard Study No 2 (4:28)
Review: We Jazz Records welcomes a label debutant here for a tasty little 7". Gothenburg-based Finnish pianist Joona Toivanen is the man and he offers up a fresh take on Terry Riley's 'Keyboard Study' with trusty help from Tapani Toivanen on bass and Olavi Louhivuori of Superposition on drums, both of whom complete his trio. It is a heady, minimalistic piece with a deeply introspective mood. On the a-side is an edit of his future album cut 'Except For' which is another complex, moody piece of inward-looking jazz minimalism with gorgeously mellifluous

Joyce - "Aldeia De Ogum"
Rosinha Da Valencia - "Summertime"
Review: One of the many musical golden moments Joyce has given us during her 20 album/40 year career, "Aldeia de Ogum" is a full-bodied samba smash that enjoyed a renaissance during London's acid jazz era in the late 80s. Meanwhile on the flip Roshina lays down an incredible version of Fitzgerald's "Summertime". Spider like nylon string finger business, softly backed by emotion-drenched strings, it's one of the best cover versions Mr Bongo have ever given us.

Janko Nilovic & The Soul Surfers have already turned our ears this year with a super 7" on Funk Night. Now they're back with another limited bit of 45rpm heat on Broc. Son De Tambor Y San Juan (Jacques Renault edit) (3:36)
Review: Mushroom Pillow have tapped up the maverick Jacques Renault here and asked him to tap into a whole new world of influence away from his colourful house fair. It is the rich heritage of Latin underground sounds he leans on most as he threads together his own edits of classics from that world into two steamy new jams. His vibrant rhythms come peppered with mystic flutes and Latin vocals, psyched-out guitars and soulful melodies that make for truly captivating listening. The originals were chosen for their historical significance and cultural impact and have been sympathetically touched up here.

Review: Talk about the perfect meeting of minds. Ellen Arkbro is one of Europe's most sought after contemporary composers and musicians right now, having worked with revered institutions such as London's Barbican, GRM Paris, and Kolner Philharmonie in recent times, to name but a few. Johan Graden stands head and shoulders above almost all the rest in the list of Sweden's finest pianists and modern jazz masterminds.

Together, as you might expect, they make beautiful, sometimes sweet, occasionally mournful, always heartfelt music that refuses to sit in classical or jazz camps, and instead straddles the two while reaching for the stars in search of whole new tones that have never, or rarely, been discovered before. Really special stuff you'd be a fool to ignore, and crazy not to fall head over heels for.

Turiya & Ramakrishna (8:18)

Mantra (16:33)
Review: Deeper into Alice Coltrane's catalogue - beyond 'Journey In Satchidananda' or 'Lord Of Lords' - comes this classic bit with cosmic bandleader Pharoah Sanders and saxophonist visionary Joe Henderson. 'Ptah The El Daoud' was initially recorded and released in 1970, and now gets a reissue via Audio Clarity, whose aim with this one is to bring the listener a perfect replica of the original. Made in the basement of her then house in Long Island, New York, this is a light, clarinetting affair; with the track 'Turiya & Ramakrishna' sonically opining Coltrane's Vedantic Hindu views on consciousness, and the seminal 'Blue Nile' nailing sinister serialist moods in their trilling, dark saxophone bits. Of note is that Joe Henderson was recorded on the left channel throughout, while Sanders was on the right; Coltrane noted this decision was intentional, with the two artists' disciplines being so different as to represent the opposing sides of the brain.

Review: In the annals of jazz history, few albums hold the prestige and enduring appeal of Getz/Gilberto. Released in 1964, this iconic collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz, guitarist Joao Gilberto, and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim represents a pinnacle moment in the fusion of jazz and bossa nova. Across its ten tracks, the album weaves a mesmerizing tapestry of melody and rhythm, casting a spell that continues to captivate listeners over half a century later. At the heart lies the symbiotic relationship between two musical giants: Stan Getz, the virtuosic tenor saxophonist renowned for his velvety tone and lyrical phrasing and Joao Gilberto, the Brazilian guitarist and vocalist whose soft, intimate delivery epitomizes the essence of bossa nova. Together, they create a sublime synergy, effortlessly blending their respective styles to craft a sound that is at once sophisticated and deeply emotive.

Review: Two Johns unite: griot and kora master John Haycock, hailing from Manchester, and fellow multi-instrumentalist John Ellis, team up for the spiritual-visionary album 'Didymus'. Enlisting a ragtag band of musicians to produce something far beyond what the average folk artist can make on their own, the album centres on a single mantra: 'visions create'. The aim is to sonically chart a roadmap towards a bright future, a feat that seems impossible: the means are sequenced electronic, dub-psychs flourishings, solstice chants, and poetry from a band of wordsmiths such as Rob Dunford and Sunflower Bill.

Review: Most people will recognize Brian Jackson as the most important collaborator with Gil Scott-Heron - between them the pair laid down a mesmerising new kind of soul which resonates in its influence and brilliance to this day. Jackson went on to work with scores of legends of Black American music, but this new album is something altogether his own. Working with Daniel Colias from Phenomenal Handclap Band, Jackson revived a long-dormant solo project from the 70s and brought it to fruition in a set of ascendant soul cuts which speak to Jackson's mighty legacy while offering something wholly contemporary. 'All Talk' bursts with jazz funk and boogie flourishes, while 'Path to Macondo / Those Kind of Blues' takes a more introspective trip into Jackson's illustrious musicality. Forget reissue culture for a minute - here's a bonafide legend still doing it in the here and now.

The project was only conceived in 2020 by musicians and producers Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad and aims to work with jazz legends on new material. This time it is Gil-Scott Heron's famous partner Brain Jackson in the spotlight. There are plenty of languid grooves that float on airy drumming with acoustic piano and electric bass also weaved in. This compilation, originally released on Blue Note, went through a variety of iterations originally starting out as Wizard of the Vibes in 1952 before getting an update in '55 as Milt Jackson and the Thelonious Monk Quintet. Madlib is responsible for all the instrumentals bar the drums, which Riggins takes care of, and both bring a wealth of jazz and hip hop experience and knowledge to the collaboration. The sounds are best described as spiritual jazz, or as Madlib calls it 'Black classical music', and are steeped in history while also offering up a vision of the future. There are moments of abstract sun worshiping, lush broken beat grooves with exquisite solos and more prickly pieces. This sure is another vital entry into the ever excellent discography of Madlib.

Review: Keys maestro Ahmad Jamal was something of a lost bebopper, giving penance to a genre that was otherwise mired in noodling and relentless velocity. Placing artistic integrity over the spotlight was a trait he maintained over the course of an entire career, earning him a reputation as something of a jazz angel. This repress of an early live show in Paris - backed by Frank Gant on drums and Jamil Nasser on double bass - effortlessly brings a trans-Atlantic mood across the pond from New York to France, with Jamal sternly prodding both the white-and-black ivories, and our moods.

Review: Like many veteran jazz artists, American pianist Keith Jarrett has amassed a vast discography. The 92 solo and collaborative albums he's notched up since 1968 cover many styles of jazz, making it tricky for newcomers to know where to start. We'd suggest beginning with this 1999 album, which is as pure as you'll get. Made up entirely of solo piano pieces - mostly covers, with a sprinkling of Jarrett's own compositions - "The Melody At Night With You" not only offers a brilliant introduction to Jarrett's trademark playing style, but also the breadth of material he's covered. More importantly, the whole collection is hugely entertaining and enjoyable, with Jarrett putting his own twist on everything from Duke Ellington classics and Oscar Hammerstein show tunes, to Gershwin ballads and traditional favourites.

This sumptuous double album documents the pianist's solo performance at Budapest's Bela Bartok National Concert Hall, which the artist is said to have considered something of a homecoming. Comprised of suite-like structures, which are themselves made up of independent "movements", the album is a marvel of spontaneity and resourcefulness. It brims with creative energy and complex abstractions as well as more striped back and soothing pieces.

He last ever concert was in France in 2016 at the Auditorium de l'Opera National de Bordeaux. Here the concert is captured on record in all its freeform improv glory with 13 tunes making up one ever-evolving suite that goes through a gamut of moods, grooves and emotions. Though his 1975 Koln concert will always be his most famous, this one is thought to come very close by a certain quarter of fans.

Tracks like 'Chasing Fantasies' and 'Fuffle Kerfuffle' showcase their swing jazz finesse, while 'Meanderthal' and 'Snakebite Playfight' infuse soulful grooves akin to 1960s jazz legends. Collaborations with UK rapper Doc Brown on 'Rolling On A High' and the uptempo funk of 'Net Zero' add modern flair, while introspective moments like 'Take A Minute' and the closing 'Enigma' offer a serene balance. Memory In Motion celebrates jazz's legacy and innovation, blending tradition with contemporary influences for an immersive listening experience.

Sarathy Korwar - "At The Speed Of Light" (3:50)
Review: IF Music's name is legendary amongst those in the know and now Jean Claude celebrates that with another superb compilation on BBE. Across this beautiful gatefold vinyl release, there are nine next level jazz tunes from the likes of Emanative & Liz Elensky, Sylvain Kassap, Greetje Bijma Kwintet and Atilla Engin Group. This is the ninth release in the 'You Need This' series and the music on it ranges from 1980 to the present day. It all adds up to a wonderfully coherent release that takes you through four decades of stylish jazz.

Review: Joe Pass was a legendary jazz guitarist who worked with many of the greats once his career hit its stride in the 1960s. Amongst his run of early classic albums is For Django, released in 1964 on Pacific Jazz and written as a tribute to another six-string legend, Django Reinhardt. Reissued as part of the Tone Poet series for Blue Note, this new pressing allows you to truly appreciate the wondrous sound Pass could conjure from his axe. The notes have a tender, mellifluous sound, but they can bite when they want to. The feeling Pass could elicit from his playing is why he's so revered, captured here when he was on the rise before the dizzy heights of working with Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald et al.

Review: Released in 1974, during Strata East's golden era, Florida free drummer John formed his first pop-up troupe to record this one-off document. At points overwhelmingly funky (the seashore laps and waves of the sun-kissed "Ode To An Untitled Lady"), at others frenetic, chaotic and challenging (the time signature switches and spiralling horns on "Ra"), at others softly cinematic and dreamy (the abstract floatation sermon of the title track) Earth Blossom creates and exists in its own cosmos. As such, it is timeless and will remain contemporary sounding for many decades to come.

Review: Verve's audiophile-focused Acoustic Sounds series - championing jazz classics big and small, with a core view to showing them off at their crispest - continues with a well-selected reissue of John Coltrane's 'Crescent'. Verve are focusing on Coltrane's live albums in particular; 'Crescent' almost certainly tops 'Live At The Village Vanguard', again featuring the unparalleled performative chops of Trane's fellow jazz peers McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones - his Classic Quartet. Across only 5 tracks, the fab four achieve every possible blue-noted peak and trough, from extended trumpet, piano ('Bessie's Blues') and drum ('The Drum Thing') solos.

Review: 'Song For Biko' is Johnny Dyani's defining chef d'oeuvre, and was dedicated to the martyred South African anti-apartheid activist, Steve Biko. Despite an illustriuous solo career following his stint as part of The Blue Notes, only 3 albums in the space of 10 years were released by his Quartet. By the time of 'Song For Biko', its membership included Don Cherry, Dudu Pukwana and Makaya Ntshoko, whose combined musical prowess adds up to a glorious melodic free jazz debut.

Review: Norah Jones is one of the most prominent voices of her generation and this record is a perfectly soothing listen that works both in the background - because of its gentle nature - but also up close if you tune into the lyrics. Now 20 years old, it gets a special anniversary reissue having, over the years, reaches in number one in 20 countries around the world. It sold almost 30 million copies and picked up all manner of awards. A real modern gem.

Review: The widely adored jazz and pop crooner Norah Jones is back with another super soothing new album. Vision arrives on the legendary Blue Note and is the ninth full-length from the singer-songwriter but the first in collaboration with Leon Michels who is an instrumental maestro behind the El Michels Affair. He brings plenty of musical richness and charming hooks and melodies to the smoky and soulful vocals of Jones. All 12 tunes are vibrant and joyous as Jones sings about feeling free, wanting to dance, making it right, and acceptance of what life brings. It's a more uplifting work following on from the melancholic vibe of her last outing Pick Me Up Off The Floor which was released early in the early pandemic days of 2020.

Review: Despite her superstar status, gained in the years following her 2002 debut, Norah Jones has refused to stick to the same musical script, instead choosing a wide range of collaborators while applying her song writing talents to a variety of genres. On Visions, she's once again evolved her sound further in cahoots with producer Leon Michels - founder of revivalist funk-soul stable Big Crown Records and long-time member of the Dap-Kings. What's on offer is pleasingly fuzzy and nostalgic in tone, with the pair conjuring up songs and sound worlds rooted in late 60s garage-soul, psychedelic dream pop, and a brand of Americana rooted as much in black American music as country. For proof, check superb recent singles 'Running' and 'Staring at the Wall'.

Review: American singer-songwriter and two-time Grammy Award winner Rickie Lee Jones is a real album specialist with this, Pieces of Treasure, being her fifteen overall in a career that has lasted over four decades so far. This one takes aim at the great American songbook, with ten covers all served up in ultra-smoky and seductive fashion. It finds Jones working again with Russ Titelman, the producer who was behind her 1979 self-titled debut album and the follow-up in 1981. The album was recorded over the course of just five days at Sear Sound studios in Manhattan and is one of her best of recent times.

Review: The second long player from saxophonist Marcus Joseph is s superb seven track crossover jazz collection. Hailing from Leicester and of Afro-Caribbean descent, Marcus has been playing clarinet since he was in single figures (and sax after that ) and that means there is little he cannot do. From spiritual to hip hop and back again, this record features contemporary talent like Kokoroko's Sheila Maurice-Grey, Theon Cross of Sons of Kemet and Nathaniel Cross from Moses Boyd Exodus. It's a record of great musicianship and rap jazz beauty suitable for lazy afternoons in the sun, romantic dinners and plenty in between.

Review: Los Angeles 12-piece Jungle Fire rarely fails to deliver the goods, offering a heatwave-hot fusion of Latin and African rhythms, rousing horns and infectious instrumentation. This was evident from their earliest releases, particularly debut album Tropicoso, which has now been given the reissue treatment (on pink vinyl, no less) after being out of print for the best part of eight years. It's packed to the rafters with inspired workouts, with our highlights including the glistening guitars and punchy horns of Afrobeat workout 'Comencemos (Let's Start)', the Fela Kuti-esque brilliance of 'Firewalker', the pitched-down dancefloor tropicala of the superb title track, and the toe-tapping, sweat-soaked heat of Afro-funk bomb 'Village Hustle'. In a word: essential!

Review: Acclaimed South African folk singer Vusi Mahlasela joined forces with singer songwriter Norman Zulu as well as the superb Swedish jazz and soul collective Jive Connection for this album back in 2002. It was thought to be a lost recording until it recently showed up and now gets fully revived by Strut. There are strong political links between these countries which no doubt adds weight to this musical link up. It is a great exchange of cultures from parables to laments on child abuse to tunes that fuse reggae, jazz and post-punk with township styles.

Review: Archie Shepp and Jason Moran masterfully blended jazz tradition with contemporary innovation when they came together on their Let My People Go album back in 2021. It is now served up on gatefold via Archiball and is a poignant exploration of African American history and identity. Shepp's emotive saxophone performances resonate with raw intensity, while Moran's piano accompaniment adds depth and nuance to each composition. Together, they navigate a musical landscape that spans spirituals, blues, and avant-garde jazz to deliver a powerful sonic narrative that both preserves and celebrates the cultural heritage of their ancestors.
