Review: It has only taken two albums for Chris Illingworth, Nick Blacka, and Rob Turner to land with an LP on the legendary Blue Note label, but they've done it, and they've done it in fine style. Moreover, it's also a bold move from Blue Note, who only usually steer away from pure jazz for the likes of Madlib and co, but in hindsight, the Gogo Penguin trio have what it takes to be remembered as fine producers of beat-driven free jazz. Mixing up elements of nu-soul, together with broken beat and classic jazz, the trio's music is wild and diverse, and fully representative of the label's vision and charisma. Review: 1964 was a big year for Wayne Shorter. To start with he was still part of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and played on some fo their key albums and he also made his solo label debut before joining the iconic Miles Davis Quintet, cementing a line-up that would become one of the seminal bands in jazz history. Speak No Evil was a record he made in Van Gelder's studio on Christmas Eve 1964 and is a real masterpiece. Here six of the shortened originals are presented on a 180g vinyl as part of the all analog Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition series.

Hank started out as a pianist before moving to the tenor sax aged 16. He put plenty of emotion and intensity into every note he played and during the years 1955-1970 he fronted more than 25 Blue Note albums as well as being a sideman on many others. This record captures him at the peak of his powers with a lyrical playing style and length, passionate solos.

Review: This is a very special release indeed, for fans of Donald Byrd's 70s period and Blue Note devotees of all types. There was a heavy presence from the Blue Note roster at the 1973 Montreux Jazz Festival, and many of the performances were released under the Live Cookin With Blue Note at Montreux banner - Bobby Hutcherson, Bobbi Humphrey and Marlena Shaw being some notable mentions. But this set from Donald Byrd inexplicably sat on master tapes in relative obscurity for a long time and now, on what would have been Byrd's 90th birthday, this raw and urgent live performance gets a proper release. It's in the vein of his seminal Black Byrd LP, but there's a more direct attack from the band in their live form - take one listen and you'll see exactly what we mean.

Review: Domi and JD Beck are already taking the world by storm - just clock the irreverent but oh-so-sweet video to 'Smile', directed by Anderson .Paak and featuring cameos from the likes of Thundercat. The duo met by chance jamming at a NAMM convention and soon struck upon a partnership which took their serious musical skills and injected them with the kind of flippant, fun-seeking attitude that breathes new life into traditional music. Review: Jazz multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy's Out To Lunch is the latest in the on going Blue Note Reissue series, Tone Poet. It was his only recording for the seminal label and is often said to be one of the best they ever put out, as well as one of Dolphy's own personal highlights. Certainly fans of 1960s avant-garde jazz will agree. Dolphy was joined by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and bassist Richard Davis amongst others, and told all players that there was no leader in the recording sessions that made up the album. That makes for a dense, busy and freeform record filled with wild playing and super musical ideas.

Review: Here's another classic from one of the greatest vibraphone players to ever grace the world of jazz. Amongst Bobby Hutcherson's imperious discography lies this collaboration with tenor sax, flute and oboe virtuoso Harold Land, originally released on Blue Note in 1971. San Francisco is notable for the shift Hutcherson and Land took away from the common hard bop style they were best known for, heading towards the fruitful pastures of jazz fusion. As well as the lead men, special credit goes to the rhythm section of John Williams on bass and Mickey Roker on drums, holding down some sturdy grooves for the duration.

Review: Sonny Clark's Cool Struttin' album is a jazz classic. The artist himself shone bright for a brief but intense period of creativity, much like greats before him such as Charlie Parker and Fats Navarro. His intricate playing and hard swing mentality makes for music filled with nuance and detail but sadly he never got the recognition he deserved during his short life (he died aged 31). He put out seven records in all on Blue Note and played with the likes of John Coltrane and Donald Byrd. This memorable session was recorded by Rudy Van Gelder and features a quintet made up of altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones.

Review: Brother Jack McDuff's Moon Rappin is one of those records which sets off a thousand sample-spots. The prolific jazz man made an incredibly catchy kind of jazz funk on this record, with the title track making for something of a peak of the genre in its cool and deadly groove. It's got soul for days and plenty of compositional chops to keep you locked in for the duration. Equally, if you're looking for hot breaks, they're smattered all over this record thanks to Joe Dukes holding it down on the skins and McDuff working his magic on the organ. A timeless classic, repressed by the good folk at Blue Note with their high quality standards present and correct.

Review: Blue Note's Tone Poets series is all about celebrating some of the greatest jazz guitarists, reissuing their seminal albums as a nod to virtuoso talent. Grant Green's 1963 album Feelin' The Spirit consisted of jazz arrangements of traditional African American spirituals such as 'Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen' and 'Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child'. Given the historical weight of the music, it's no surprise to hear Green soaring high as he expresses the songs through his guitar, but as if that wasn't enough he's backed up by Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums.

A six-track meander through melodic post-bop, high-note ivory-tinkings, and an unmistakable focus on swing as its rhythmic base, this is almost certainly an unforgettable brush with the other side. Next up to get the audiophile treatment is Stanley Turrentine and his Rough N Tumble album from 1966. It is a soul-jazz staple with a heavy groove tuning all the way through it like the words in a stick of rock. The playlist includes originals as well as covers of some great tunes by Ray Charles and Burt Bacharach and the band itself is also made up of greats like Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, James Spaulding on alto saxophone and McCoy Tyner on piano.

Review: Tenor saxophone master and composer Wayne Shorter recorded his The All Seeing Eye album in 1965. It's a hugely ambitious album, multi layered and intriguing and is now reissued as part of Blue Note's Tone Poet series. His aim for the music was that it would use "a wider range of colours and textures" as well as continuing on his usual theme to explore life, the universe and god. The main man was joined for this one by trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, Grachan Moncur III on trombone and Herbie Hancock on piano, amongst others. The epic rollercoaster that is 'Genesis' has to be the highlight here.

As guitarists go, Burrell has a sound which dances with nimble eloquence few could even dream of matching. Hear him cavorting across 'Be Happy' and it's quite hard to imagine the notes were played by human hands. Despite that, it's also a wonderfully delicate, rounded sound which more than makes it worthy of an entry into this series - just marvel at that tone, captured across a variety of spots in New York in the spring of '56.

The album was only the second time Bobby played as part of a quartet and it received rave reviews at the time for its sophisticated but accessible sound. Review: A winningly presented live experience, Robert Glasper and his partners in time signatures perform a whirlwind set of favourites from the Black Radio collection. Highlights include the mindboggling rhythm and dexterity of "Stella By Starlight", the throaty monologue of the legend that is Harry Belafonte on "Got Over" and the softer, more reflective "The Worst". Live recordings go one of two ways; they either alienate you from the fun or they make you feel like you're right there in the front row. This is, without question, the latter. Beautiful.
