Windy C (5:23)
Puppet On A Chain (3:47)
No More City, No More Country (45 edit) (4:15)
Holes In My Shoes (3:32)
Review: 1974's Coming Right At You, the sole album from 100% Pure Poison, has long been a sought-after jazz-funk gem. Soul Brother has previously reissued the rare (and increasingly expensive) LP, though this double 7" marks the first time most of these tracks have been available on wax since 2001. Check first opener (and title track) "Windy C", a superb chunk of lolloping, laidback jazz-funk that sits somewhere between Bob James and Cymande, before turning your attention to the slow-burn soulful delights of string-laden torch song "Puppet On A Chain". Over on the second 7", "No More City, No More Country" is a more hard-spun Blaxploitation funk affair, while "Hole In My Shoe" is a horn-fired slab of J.B's style funk-soul fusion.

Saudade Vem Correndo (DJ Koco edit) (4:10)
Review: 45Trio is a Japanese jazz outfit comprised of Junichi Sunayama, Masahiko Kubo and Shingo Hirakawa that has been turning out fresh jams since 2013 including an album and several 45rpms. 'Saudade Vem Correndo' is a new funk and soul-infused jazz sound that arrives especially for Record Store Day 2023 on limited edition 7". The A-side original is a nice louche and late-night lounge groove with magical melodies and catchy samba rhythms. On the flip is a DJ Koco edit that brings a hip-hop vibe that reminds of the late great J Dilla.

Remind Me (4:06)
Miles To Cross (feat Yousuke Kobayashi) (4:05)
Review: Some 10 years ago 45 Trio first appeared with their silky smooth strain of live band boogie and broken beat, minting an album on Origami Productions before making a welcome comeback in 2020. Their latest 7" continues a fruitful run with Bloom Music, leading in with the lounge-ready synth-funk of 'Remind Me', with a luscious piece of Moog-esque low end which makes a nod to Lowrell's evergreen 'Mellow Mellow Right On'. 'Miles To Cross' is a looser, jazzier affair with a widescreen arrangement which features a guest spot from Calmera's Yousuke Kobayashi.

A Tribe Called Quest - "Sucka Nigga" (4:03)
Jack Wilkins - "Red Clay" (4:03)
Review: We're big fans of these educational 7"s that often crop up, with a legendary hip hop jam on one side and the source of some its samples appearing on the flip. This time out we get A Tribe Called Quest's deep cut 'Sucka N***a' - which is taken from their legendary Midnight Marauders album - with its buttery rhymes and funky bass buried deep within. Jack Wilkins's 'Red Clay' on the flip isn't that much of a deviation. Though it's slower and free from the rhymes, it is a brilliantly effective and emotive cut. More like this please.

Abram & Nestor - "Four Minutes Of Funk" (4:02)
Nestor Alvarez - "El Trombonista" (2:50)
Review: Neil Anderson's unashamedly revivalist Original Gravity label is back once again - when are they not dropping heat, frankly? - with more funk goodness. This time out it is two more massive slices of tasty Latin funk getting served up. The first is Abram & Nestor's 'Four Minutes Of Funk' which is indeed four minutes of funk that will unite dancefloors from here to eternity with its big organ magic. Nestor Alvarez' 'El Trombonista' is as you might guess denied by its big trombone and also boasts some great horn work. These are two steamy and sizzling cuts that prove irresistible.

Act I - "It’s The Same Old Story" (4:24)
Ivano Fossati - "Night Of The Wolf (Tema Del Lupo)" (4:00)
Review: Measured Mile records puts two classy soul tracks onto the same 7". Originally released in 1974, Act 1 - 'It's The Same Old Story' is often looked over classic of the era. Act 1 hailed from Detroit and featured Raeford Gerald, Roger Terry, Reggie Ross and George Barker. The band had two minor hits but often people recall 'It's The Same Old Story' as their favorite of their only full album. Ivano Fossati's 'Night Of The Wolf' is found on the B-side. A jam song that verges slightly into Latin music, asks for quite a sum of money for its original copy. Both tracks add up to a real gem of a 7".

Fo Yelle (4:50)
Review: Florence Adooni's relationship with Philophon goes back some time. She was the voice of Guy One's group and featured on his hit 'Estre' while she also provided vocals for Jimi Tenor's club classic 'Vocalize My Luv'. Under her own name, she has also dropped a series of top albums that have earned her the title of "the queen of Frafra-Gospel". This super sweet 45rpm typifies that sound with shakers and hand clapping, acoustic guitars and earthy drum sounds. 'Yinne' is upbeat and sunny and rich in melody and 'Fo Yelle' is much more heartfelt and introspective. Both are great.

Review: Helmed by producer and multi-instrumentalist Keisuke Yamazoe, Alfex Combo are a deep funk and jazz-funk outfit whose occasional releases are rarely less than incendiary. Their latest outing - their first for two years according to our records - is another special, must-check missive. Check first A-side 'Intermezzo', a killer cover of the Webster Lewis composition that adds righteous horn motifs and hard-wired sax solos to a bustling, life-affirming deep funk groove. Over on the flip, vibraphone player Masami Watanabe excels on a Latin-tinged jazz-funk number that's every bit as essential as the party-rocking A-side.

Philadelphia Mambo (warehouse find, slight sleeve wear)
Philadelphia Mambo (5:05)
Girl From Ipanema (5:04)
Review: The dusty-fingered diggers behind TRAMP Records have unearthed something rather special here: an unreleased, full-length recording of a live performance by hitherto unheralded combo Afro Blue Persuasion, an Afro-Cuban Jazz band fronted by Bay Area stalwart Ulysses Crockett. The full album, "Live at Haight Levels", will be released in 2019. As a taster, TRAMP has served up two tight edits of epic album tracks. "Philadelphia Mambo" is particularly potent, with breezy piano riffs and inspired saxophone solos rising above and distinctive mambo groove and tons of additional hand percussion. The flipside features their loose, solo-laden interpretation of bossanova classic "Girl From Ipanema". It's pretty darn good, though lacks the sheer ebullience of the more dancefloor-focused A-side.

Poinciana (4:58)
Review: TRAMP Records continues to serve up tracks from "Live at Haight Levels", a rare 1960s recording of Bay Area stalwart Ulysses Crockett's little-known Afro-Cuban jazz band, Afro-Blue Persuasion. Both "Cuban Fantasy" and "Poinciana" have been edited to fit on a seven-inch, with the epic original versions naturally featuring in full-length form on the separately available two-part album. "Cuban Fantasy" is especially good, with wild flute solos and fluid piano motifs rising above a densely percussive Afro-Cuban groove. "Poinciana", meanwhile, is an altogether jauntier and breezier proposition rich in hot and heavy sax, Tito Puente style drums and more offbeat piano riffs.

Olli Ahvenlahti - "Minor Minor" (4:36)
The Stance Brothers - "Minor Minor" (3:17)
Review: "Minor Minor" was one of the strongest cuts on Finnish jazz pianist Olli Ahvenlahti's 2017 set "Thinking, Whistling", so it's great to see the track get a deserved single release. Built around a simple, hip-swinging drumbeat and fluid, surprisingly funky double bass, the track sees Ahvenlahti and tenor sax player Jussi Kannaste battle for supremacy via laidback but on-point solos. On the flipside, drummer/producer Teppo Makynen AKA Teddy Rok dons the Stance Brothers alias to serve up a killer cover version that drags the track further towards jazz-funk territory via slick guitar solos, squeezable synth-bass and some particularly enjoyable vibraphone lines.

Review: Although best known as the lead singer of well-regarded Japanese funk-soul band O.A.S.B, Amy Akaoka has long dreamed up recording a salsa album in the style of '60s and '70s pianist and bandleader Larry Harlow. This tasty two-track 7" single is her first release in the style - the album will appear later in the year - and is as summery, breezy and life affirming as you'd expect. She begins with "Tu Jamas", where male backing vocals, jaunty pianos and her own passionate lead vocal ride a sweat-soaked salsa rhythm. Turn to the B-side for the horn-heavy delight that is breezy salsa shuffler "Solo Tu Amor". Naturally, both are hugely authentic to the style of salsa championed by Harlow.

Review: Alessandro Alessandroni is a library music legend who set the blueprint for the genre early on and then managed to get even more famous because of providing the iconic whistle on famous spaghetti western 'A Fistful of Dollars'. The influential composer and musician had a big say in the world of soundtracks during the 60s and 70sFour Flies have often released his work or covers of it. The tunes on this 7" are taken from an obscure 1975 Italian film by Elio Bartolini. They walk the thin line between disco and funk and jazz-funk with big horn and rhythm sections. Both might have been lost forever if it weren't for the fact that this label put them on the now modern classic and hard to find compilations Esterno Notte and Esterno Giorno.

Don't Give Up (feat Mounika) (2:29)
Tema Di Susie (1:35)
Review: As part of the RELOVED series from Four Flies - co-curated with fellow indie label Little Beat More - comes one of a handful new reinterpreted versions of Alessandro Alessandroni's 'Tema di Susie', the star soundtrack cut from the 1976 Italian noir film Sangue Di Sbirro. With the film regaling a gangland drama centring on revenge, passion, and the madness of love, Alessandroni's original minute-and-a-half-long cut is an eerily serene counterpoint to its themes and here appears alongside a new remix from French producer Mounika, who fleshes out the original cinematic-soul number's circa-140bpm headnod and serene flauting with beefier drums and wilder piano flourishes; this is a juxtaposition you can hear as clearly as day here, on this A-and-B'd delight.

Review: As showcased by DJ Koco from Japan on instagram and as the label artwork makes clear, this two-tracker from the previously unheard Alex Santos Orchestra was made in tribute to Creed Taylor's legendary CTI Records imprint, which during the 1970s released some of the finest jazz, jazz-funk and fusion ever made. On side A the studio collective gives their interpretation of Freddie Hubbard's 1970 epic 'Red Clay', with the track's most famous musical elements - jaunty sax riffs and mazy electric piano motifs - rising above a funkier, warmer and tighter interpretation of the track's low-end groove. Turn to the flip for their version of Bob James' favourite 'Nautilus', a harder edge take that combines a faithfully spacey take on the original's electric piano melody with sweatier beats and heavier horns.

Alex Santos Orchestar has taken care of this one, as well as the debut, and is made up of a fine group of musicians playing guitar, brass, vocals, drums, congas, keys and trombone. Review: Los Angeles' Alex Santos Orchestra previously paid tribute to classic jazz-funk imprint Red Clay Records via a 45 featuring covers of two classic cuts. On this follow-up, they've turned their attention to another similarly lauded label, Flying Dutchman Records, offering their interpretations of two tracks associated with one of the imprint's most-loved artists, Lonnie Liston Smith. On the A-side they handle 'Devika (Goddess)', a David Hubbard composition that they re-frame as an atmospheric, bass guitar-led slab of laidback, head-nodding jazz funk full of warming electric piano, flanged funk guitars and hazy horns. Arguably even better is their party-starting take on Liston-Smith's most celebrated tune, 'Expansions', whose familiar bassline and infectious groove never fails to get dancefloors moving.

Pretty Purdie - "Heavy Soul Slinger" (4:16)
Review: Bernard "Pretty" Purdie and his Playboys were an iconic funk group of the late 70s who had big hits with the likes of Gil Scott Heron on his seminal 'The Revolution Will Not Be Televised' single. A year later on the same label, Flying Dutchman, they served up the 'Heavy Soul Slinger' single which gets reissued here. It's driven by big drum breaks and funky hits, with plenty of lush chords and rolling basslines all taking you on a high class and sophisticated trip. On the a-side is Harold Alexander 's 'Mama Soul' from the same era, but with a much more experimental sound rooted in wordless ad libs and frantic flutes.

Review: Monty Alexander's 'Love & Happiness,' it might not surprise you to learn, is a cover version of the great Al Green's 'Love & Happiness.' He hooked up with Ernest Ranglin for the occasion and the pair laid it down in 1974, two years after the original came out, with super slick jazz-funk fusion over a reggae tinged beat. The original chords are recognisable, but the whole track i such more mellifluous and bright, the golden chords oozing warmth and the rolling rhythm getting you feeling all snuggly and loved up. Definitely worth a place in your collection.

'Plata O Plomo' takes its namesake from an old Spanish adage, literally translating to English to mean "silver or lead", implying that the recipient of the phrase must either accept a bribe or lose their life. In keeping with this heavy-handed theme, the track is punchy and surface-tense as a bullet yet to exit the barrel. Meanwhile, 'Reality For Nuttin' gets at an equally nihilistic and existential theme, all while finding joy in the conundrum of life with huge rhythm guitars and pop-out pianos and brasses.

On the flip, also served up as a Burning Sole version, is 'JB In PSKOV'. This one has big cowbells and more raw hits with teasing horn slides and a nice jumbled groove led by funky organ work.

Golovoy Kachai (Burning Sole version) (3:54)
JB In PSKOV (Burning Sole version) (4:08)
Review: Amazin' Five have been popping off in the past couple of years, landing their last single on Tramp Records and now coming back to roost on their original shack, Burning Sole. 'Golovoy Kachai (Shake Your Head)' finds the Russian group locking into a bouncy stride, all nimble guitar chops and sweet organ, keeping laid back but without any slack. 'JB In PSKOV' clearly doffs its cap to the godfather of soul, laying down a groove Fred Wesley would be proud to call his own. This is heavy brewed funk from a group who clearly feel it deep down in their souls, so if you're always thirsting for more of that classic sound, then look no further for the next addition to your arsenal of jams.

Pow Pow Pow (Mas Que Nada) (2:31)
Review: During the days of Dingwalls' legendary jazz-dance and rare groove nights in the 1980s, it wasn't uncommon to hear Nancy Ames "Caracara" surging from the speakers. An infectious Latin Jazz/Easy Listening floor-filler first released on the American singer's 1966 album Latin Pulse, it has long been something of a favourite amongst both DJs and dancers. Here, it gets the reissue treatment on 7" from the cool cats at Dynamite Cuts, backed with 1967 gem "Pow, Pow, Pow", a killer, bi-lingual cover of Sergio Mendes' favourite "Mas Que Nada". This, too, is simply superb.

No Space For Us (3:44)
Review: Tastemaking US jazz label International Anthem serves up this special 7" from Angel Bat Dawid in response to Emma Warren's 2019 book "Make Some Space", which told the story of London DIY music space Total Refreshment Centre. Featuring clarinets, keys and drum machines, both tracks are hugely conversational, with emotional pain and power ebbing and flowing through both originals pieces. A-side "Transition East" overflows with ideas and narrative while "No Space For Us" is more cautious and subdued, but both leave a lasting impact. The track features Angel with Ben LaMar Gay and Brazilian talents Edbrass Brasil, Romulo Alexis, Tadeu Mascarenhas, Nancy Viegas and Germano Estacio.
