  2. Matt Moroder - "Yasemin Endless Edit" (6:42)
  3. Potentiometer - "Turkish Sauerkraut" (7:05)
  4. Afrobot - "Kalk Gidelim" (5:46)
Review: The success of Holland's AM edit imprint lies in its founders' desire to offer up on-point scalpel reworks of thoroughly obscure but inspired tracks from around the world. Naturally, there's plenty of evidence to support this argument on the label's sixth hand-stamped 12". AM regular Afrobot kicks things off via "Turkish Dream", a fine tweak of a boisterous, Hammond-heavy chunk of glassy-eyed late '60s dream pop, before Matt Moroder gets busy with a deliciously low-slung slab of Middle Eastern post-punk dub disco. On the flip, Potentiometer rearranges a seriously heavy Turkish funk-rock workout - think Rare Earth guitar riffs, sweaty drumming and eyes-closed solos - while Afrobot takes is further into psychedelic territory via the mind-altering, Moog-boasting brilliance of "Kalk Gidelim".

  1. Alemayehu Eshete - "Tchero Adari Negn" (4:27)
  2. Mahmoud Ahmed - "Bemin Sebeb Litlash" (4:26)
Review: The UK's Mr Bongo has been reissuing old music and putting out new tunes since the late 1980's, and the label is still going strong in 2015. This latest 7" features two of Ethiopia's greatest musicians, Alemayehu Eshete and Mahmoud Ahmed, in a head to head, split EP. On the A-side, Mr Bongo has resurfaced Eshete's "Tchero Adari Negn", a supremely funky piece with the man's own voice gliding effortlessly over hard drums and fuzy guitar riffs; "Bemim Sebeb Litlash" goes deeper and more psychedelic on the flip, and Ahmed's voice is a pleasure as always. Check their other material on Mississippi for a broader introspective.

  1. Amazones De Guinee - "Samba" (4:52)
  2. Moussa Doumbia - "Samba" (5:27)
Review: Mr Bongo kickstarts a new Afro 45s series with serious intention; all-girl troupe from Guinea Amazones De Guinee take the lead with a live recording from Paris, 1983. Taken from their Au Coeur De Paris album, it's the perfect example of a live recording with the balance of musicianship and crowd participation precision tuned. Flip for the previously rare 1980 recording by Ivory Coast's Moussa Doumbia whose smoky vocals and JB-level shrieks hit hard over a clam-tight Afrofunk rhythm. What a way to start a new series.

  1. Banda Black Rio - "Miss Cheryl" (3:47)
  2. Miele - "Melo Do Tagarela (Rapper's Delight)" (instrumental) (4:10)
Review: Although Brazil's Banda Black Rio remain infamous for the albums that they recorded in the late 1970s, two beautiful LPs that rode that singular wave of samba-ridden jazz dance, 1980's "Miss Cheryl" is an outstanding tune, and we can hear why RCA picked it up back in the day. Mr Bongo provides us with the reissue here and, if you haven't heard it, it's an absolute delight which switches between disco, psych, and something inherently Brazilian - there's even a wacky synth in there, for good measure. Compatriot Miele appears on the flip with "Melo Do Tagarela (Rappers Delight)", a sublime slice of early, electronic boogie that sounds as fresh today as it did back at the tail end of the 70s. A devious little reissue that you should own...

Review: Chicago meets Austin via Mexico, Dos Santos and Money Chicha pair up for a unique 45" that rattles and shakes with both acts heavy, intense Latin spirit. "Undercover" is the fiery side of this limited slab of scarlet wax with its yearning lyrics, insistent percussion and swooning organs that build up into a heady frenzy on the breakdown while "Martes Negro" mystifies with more of an eastern twang and shimmering blues guitars. Two bands, two sides, one killer piece of custom artwork from Artuor Fresan and only 500 pressed. You know what to do.

Review: The love of all things Soviet and disco has been established by French/German duo Fulgeance and Scientist for several years now, having reached a peak last year with their album The Soviet Tape on First Word. Now they return with their own edit series on brand new label Excursions. With eyes squared fully on the floor, each obscurity is given some serious groove muscle for the floor... Charaunitsy's soulful croons and yearning horns are given an additional kick/snare swing, Latvia's Mirdza gets a deliciously camp turbo charge while Ukraine's Tatyana Kochergina gets a full-on Philly treatment with lavish strings and a bassline that won't say nyet.

  3. Throwing Shade - "Dream Scene" (3:27)
Review: According to Beating Heart, Hugh Tracey made several thousand field recordings across Sub-Saharan Africa between the 1920s and 1970s. His intention was to 'reveal the beauty and complexity of the music to a world that saw little value in it.' Fast forward to the present day, Tracey's bid to preserve the music of Africa for future generations lives on. Beating Heart has shared the late Tracey's archive at the International Library of African Music (ILAM) with contemporary producers and keeping in line with Tracey's vision, all proceeds will be used to assist people in the areas where the music was originally recorded. London's Throwing Shade, fresh of a great release for Ninja Tune turns in the vivid and polyrhythmic 'Dream Scene", Hotflush's Machinedrum gives us the intense polyrhythmic Sub Saharan trance induction of "Lewasi" while Ibibio Sound Machine gives us the soul-funk boogie of "Amai Ndiwulule".

Review: Wanna hear the Isley Brothers classic "It's Your Thing" given a Latin shakedown? Mr Bongos have got you covered on the latest 7" in their splendid Latin 45s series! Originally issued back in 1974 on TR Records, this Los Africanos cover is a rum heavy Nu Yorican funk-soul instrumental featuring screaming Hammond organ and FX. It's very expensive in original form now, so shout outs to Mr Bongos for pressing it up here along with an equally good 1968 cover of instrumental, boogaloo version of Eddie Floyd's all-time classic "Knock On Wood" from Machito & His Afro-Cubans.

Review: Banoffee Pies Records launches its first white label to date, and it's a three-pronged collaboration by new and exciting faces in the scene. First up is Philou Louzolo and his excellent "Afrofuturism Dance", a solid house jerker with lively tribal influences, folloed siftly by Wendel Sield and his moodier, jazzier piece entitled "History Of Black People". On the flip, Huntleys & Palmers MMT proceeds to drop some Gipsy King house in the form of "Ton A Ton", backed by the more funky disco shades of "Pangae Flute". Nice and diverse for ya!

Review: As part of a cultural exchange programme that found Floating Points and James Holden travelling to Morocco to take part in a unique collaborative week next to the pool at the Fellah Hotel. Working with Maalem Mahmoud Guinia and his band, the British artists turned in their own versions from the sessions with excellent results. Floating Points takes a delicate approach to the source material, slowly feeding in considered synth lines to accompany the traditional claps, chants and guembri. James Holden meanwhile offers up "Bania" which captures a rough and ready African production vibe that equally complements the music. Comes with 16 page booklet!

  2. Giobel & The Latin Chords - "We Belong Together"
Review:  A cheeky teaser from Record Kicks' forthcoming Boogaloo Vol 6 album, here we find two authentic Latin northern soul covers originally recorded in the late 60s. "Hold On" takes the horn heavy Sam & Dave classic and gives it a rapid tongue Spanish twist while retaining the distinctive English chorus. "We Belong Together", meanwhile, is a more touching take on a Bobby Marin standard. With Giobel really belting out the crooning vocals and a lounge style polish to the horns, it's instant funk seduction. Only 500 of these 45s... So jump on this as soon as you can.

  1. What You Want To Be? (O Que Voce Que Apostar?) (2:09)
  2. These Are The Songs (Esta E A Cancao) (2:59)
Review: Tim Maia's 1968 debut single, "What You Want To Be", has long been a favourite of dusty-fingered Latin music enthusiasts. Original copies, though, have long been out of the price range of most DJs and collectors. Happily, Mr Bongo has struck a deal to reissue it. The title track is something of a scorching dancefloor-treat - a boogaloo-era slab of Latin funk in which Maia and chums sing in English atop a bustling rhythm track and some seriously heavy horns. B-side "These Are The Songs" is a much more relaxed and laidback, samba-soaked affair, closer in tone to early 1960s U.S soul songs of the sort regularly covered by the Beatles early in the career.

  3. Kings - "Minino Na Tchora"
Review: A brand new island series from Afrofunk specialists Sofrito, here we're zapped back to the early 80s where Cape Verde's musical community hit a rich vein of form. Alma Negra's edit of "Corpim Sabe" features an extended rhythm section where close attention paid to the wistful guitars. Hide & Smile's edit of Bulimundo's "Santo Antoni La Belem", meanwhile, accentuates the island's culture of insistent Batuque percussion. Finally we're seduced by an untouched original from Os Kings where stunning guitars shimmer atop a slinky bassline with hypnotic effect. Highly limited, grab this while you can.... And start counting down the days until the next installment of Sofrito's new series.

Review: The gloriously off-the-wall On The Corner imprint is back, ready to tear it down with its predictably unpredictable chain of artists who reside firmly in the 'ODDS' space. Much like the previous releases, this is a mixed bag of outernational goodness and jazzy sensibilities, offering a release which truly blurs the lines of the extended 'dance' space. Our top picks in running order: Black Classical's "JeJe" is one of the most innovstive uses of percussion and organ that we've heard this side of year, Sam Jones' "Group As Salaam Construct" is probably THE definition of off-kilter thanks to its lopsided beat groove, and "Simba" by Daisho takes the whole polyrhythmic equation onto the minimal end of the spectrum. Quirky, refreshing and absolutely recommended new strains of floor music.

Review: Myriam Makeba or Mama Afrika as many would refer to her, was a South African singer regarded as being the first and most important woman in traditional South African music. She led a rich and fulfilling life across the globe, singing with artists like The Skylarks, living in London, and finally retiring in Castel Volturno, near Naples in Italy. Bongo 45 reissues her wild and much sought-after 'Xica Da Silva", a tropical soul ballad that sways from left to right with upmost glare and style. On the flip, we have Brazilian Jorge Ben with his own version of the tune, one that still contains Makeba's chorus at its core but guided by the man's South American charm around the edges. One of the best Bongo 45's in a good while. Hot!

Review: Surely one of the most fitting albums of the summer, Sabrina Malheiros's fifth LP Clareia undergoes some stately remix treatment as we move from open fields to sweaty clubs to party for the rest of the year. Three of broken beat's finest and most respected protagonists all play a role... Man of the moment Henry Wu gets woozy on the organs and widens the whole jam out into seven minutes of space funk, Dego and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black dig deep into the bossa dynamic with a Latin jazzy spiritual feel running throughout the momentum while CoOp founder IG Culture adds a little skip to the drums, dreamy plucks and bassline that won't stop bouncing. If it's bruk, don't try and fix it.
