Abel Lima E Les Sofas - "Corre Riba Corre Baxo"
Abel Lima Des Iles Du Cap Vert - "Nos Maos"
Review: Supreme Cape-Verdean funk from the 70s, two of Abel Lima's most distinctive cuts are re-energised by Sofrito. "Corre Riba Corre Baxo" translates to what comes up must come down... But there's no come down here; pure positivity oozes from every highlife guitar strum and the overwhelming presence of the walking bassline. "Nos Maos" is a tad more subdued as the French and Portuguese lyrics pin down a tight, horn-led Caribbean groove. Act fast: as with all Super Singles, this one is super-limited!

Whatever You Want (4:52)
Keep Stepping (4:21)
Review:  Two cosmic afro adventures from Lazy Robot's Tom Funk and friend Ozan Nid as they make their Afronova debut. "Whatever You Want" is a heady excursion that refuses to keep still. Coming on strong like a Smith & Mudd jam, it suddenly opens up into a near evangelistic breakdown where soaring toplines weave over a broad slow-mo highlight riff. "Keep Stepping" takes us down even deeper Balearic rabbit holes with long synth vapour trails lapping over a sedate percussive Lagosian groove.

Vetson Androy - "Mavandeza" (3:55)
Joajoby - "Tarantasy Maitso" (3:30)
Review: You can rely on the Sofrito label to unearth the most daring of dance music from the most obscure corners of the earth. This latest instalment lands on Madagascar's shores, a stunning landscape with relatively little known about its music from the typical Westerner; as usual, though, we are pleasantly surprised by what we discover on this totally killer two-tracker. The sound is called Salegy, a style originating from the island's North-Western quarters, and that evokes fast 6/8 rhythms accompanied by steely percussion folds and tribalistic chanting: "Mavandeza" is a deep and mystical song performed by the Vetson Androy outfit, who were famous proponents of the sound at the height of its popularity in 1978. The B-side is from tenders later, and Joajoby's "Tarantasy Maitso" is another glorious slice of vocal-led percussion in the island's loose and spiritual style. Unmissable.

Tattletale (part 2)
Review: The saying goes that no one likes a tattle tale, but any self respecting funk collector would be hard pressed to give up on the chance of owning this latest dinker of the same name from the esteemed Antibalas collective. Composed by crew member Victor Axelrod, "Tattletale" has been a long term fixture of live sets by Antibalas and it's great to see them finally commit it to seven inches of wax. Laid down during the recording sessions for their last Daptone long player, its spread across two parts on this seven and is a sublime slab of Ethiopian funk that sees Antibalas doffing their collective cap to '70s pioneers Mulatu Astatqe, Wallias Band and Mahmoud Ahmed.

Hombre (Voodoocuts rework)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Record has very light surface marks/scratches, but otherwise in perfect working condition***

Matasuna Records' latest must-check reissue comes courtesy of obscure Mexican outfit Apache, who released a handful of singles and a couple of albums of fiery Latin funk in the mid 1970s. A-side 'Liberate', which first surfaced on the band's 1976 album Del Bumpin Al Horno, is a find slab of hot and humid funk built around rising horn arrangements, low-slung grooves and excitable group vocals. Over on the flip, regular Matasuna contributor Voodoocuts delivers an excellent rework of 1975 cut 'Hombre', which was originally written and arranged by Apache's trumpet player Ermesto Haros. Voodoocuts adds a few of his own samples and musical touches here or there, embellishing the original groove and instrumentation with enough contemporary funk breaks oomph to delight those who like their beats tight, fat and floor friendly.

Les Hamsters - "Hamsters Frappe" (4:30)
Review: Destination Martinique: Sofrito's Island Series gets lively to the sound of Michel Bagoe and the brilliantly named Les Hamsters. The former lays down a sublime carnival soundtrack with relentless drums and a highlife feel to the guitars while the latter develop the street party feel with rippling drums and tightly plucked guitars. Guaranteed to whisk your dance to another world, just like the rest of the Sofrito discography!

Review: One of the many highlights from his album Bosq Y Orquesta De Madera, "Paciencia De Jo" shows Whiskey Baron Bosq at his most sedate and soulful. A future Balearic classic blessed with the heart-melting vocals of Tita Lima, it oozes sunset charm throughout. For this special white vinyl release Ubiquity have invited Tall Black Guy to the fray for a stunning re-touch. Retaining the lush vibes of the original while adding a smooth sense of jazz and additional percussion, it complements the original with every soulful ebb and flow. Brenda - "Natureza Viva"
Rosana - "Alegria No Ar"
Junior Mendes - "Copacabana Sadia"
Sergio Mallandro - "Vem Fazer Glu Glu"
Review: Destination early 80s Brazil: RCA have curated four previously rare cuts from some of the country's most acclaimed boogie exponents. We ignite with Brenda's Don Beto-produced funk strutter "Natureza Viva", all jazzy chord progressions and razor-sharp tightness. It's followed Rosana's unequivocal synth boogie swooner "Alegria No Ar" which features players from both Banda Black Rio and the mighty Azymuth. Meanwhile on the B, the Latin flavours are more prominent as Junior Mendes's hyper-rare "Copacabana Sadia" and Sergio Mallandro's white-hot Earth Wind & Fire cover "Vem Fazer Glu Glu". Scorching stuff.

Nora Se Va
Review: In February of 2006 Bronx River Parkway took a trip to Puerto Rico with plans of making a full length record in collaboration with Pablo Rodriguez of Candela Records and the many musical legends that make their home in PR. This 45 is just a taste of the magic that came out of this two week long, monumental meeting of titans in old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Side A entitled 'La Valla' is espcially appropriate with the current state of affairs regarding immigrant's rights. An uptempo number with a marching band flair featuring the voice of Jose Parla (aka Ease). Side B entitled 'Nora Se Va' is a mid tempo ballad with a soundtrack feel featuring legendary singer Tito Cruz. A key member of Roberto Roena and Apollo Sound for close to thirty years.

Samba A L'aeroport
Review: From the label who gave us Human Egg, The Joubert Singers and The Real Fake MC comes yet another startlingly refreshing piece of jazz funk. Last Bongo In Paris (AKA old Favorite faces Cleon and Jazzy Pidjay) fire up a soft riff fusion between the horn and percussion sections while the piano confirms the Caribbean flavour you can hear on the refrains. "Samba A L'aeroport" lives up to its name; a samba, naturally, it's played softly with an over cheeriness and a cyclic loop as you'd imagine to hear played for infinity in an airport lounge. But in a 'going on holiday' kinda way and not a 'delayed for nine hours and want to kill people' type of way. Sun kissed and soulful.

Lololi-Lomko (Renegades Of Jazz edit) (4:36)
Review: Over the last couple of years, Matasuna Records has developed a tried-and-tested formula. It revolves around finding and licensing killer cuts - think funk, Afrobeat, tropical flavours and Latin beats - and then pairing them with a fresh, floor-friendly re-edit. Their latest find is something of an overlooked gem: a gorgeously sunny 1983 number from Ghanaian musician Mawuli Decker that's piled high with infectious, EWE-language vocals, Highlife guitars, spacey Moog sounds and cute electric piano solos. The accompanying Renegades of Jazz re-edit is pleasingly faithful to its source material, deftly showcasing Decker's brilliant music while beefing up the bass, subtly tightening up the drums and layering on some complimentary hand percussion.

Carnaval Soca (Antal edit)
La Musique (Palms Trax edit)
Review: ***B-STOCK: Split/tear and creasing to corner of outer sleeve, but otherwise in excellent working condition***

Although not widely known, Daniel Dimbas's 1985 album "La Diferencia" is regarded in some circles as one of the greatest Caribbean zouk records of all time, and certainly the heaviest. Rush Hour co-founder Antal is a fan, and here heads-up a double A-side of fresh edits of key cuts from the sought-after set. First up Antal expertly rearranges "Carnaval Soca", delivering a warm, humid and sweaty interpretation rich in driving soca-disco grooves, punchy horns, heady harmony vocals and mazy, Zouk style analogue synthesizer solos. Palms Trax takes a similarly light-touch approach on his edit of the breezier and more sun-kissed "La Musique", occasionally opting for filter trickery on an otherwise traditional style scalpel edit.

Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit) (3:43)
I Love You Viata Mea (Lema) (4:40)
Review: By now Future Nuggets have surely been established as one of Romania's leading exponents of leftfield electronic oddities, and they don't disappoint on the surprising delights of this new 7" from Renato Din Sala and Ion Din Dorobanai. There's an Eastern lilt to the vocals and melodies on both tracks, but they're framed by some wonderfully quirky synth parts and budget drum machines. "Nu E Injoseala (N-am Carti De Credit)" in particular capitalises on cranky monosynth squelch and organ wails, while "I Love You Viata Mea (Lema)" takes a more energetic approach and works some Rhodes-like sounds into the mix.

Music De Carnaval (Steven J re-drum) (4:29)
Review: Magdy El Hossainy is a bit of a legend, a relic from the glory days of North African music, when all sorts of cutting-edge rhythms were being dreamt up in small, DIY studios. He is a member of the '70s outfit Abdel Halim Hafez, putting out a string of glorious material on Moriphon before separating due to his partner's passing. He's back in 2016, and the keyboardist still passes with flying colours - "Music De Carnival" is a heads-down, murky percussive tune with Hossainy's sparkling synth keys, and a swelling bit bass for its bottom-end. The Steven J re-drum remix, as the name implies, twists the drums into even more dangerous folds and comes out a total winner - a seriously destructive tune for all sorts of DJ's to alleviate over. Recommended.

Antal has already been dropping the worldly beats on this EP which is a fine stamp of approval for Israeli DJ and collector Elado. This marks his debut on the label having won plenty of fans for his offering on Eddie C's cult Red Motorbike. The music take its cues from all over the planet - Africa, India and the Middle East - and brims with disco joy, funk richness and plenty of earthly soul. 'Big Baba' is a classy party starter with good time feels, 'Gulab Jamun' is a foreign language acid laced love song and 'Blame' is synth heavy disco funk.

My Little Baby (3:47)
Review: Ten-piece Fulaso specializes in "funky Latin soul", a catch all term that allows them to slip between South American and Afro-Cuban styles at will. For this first outing on vinyl, they've decided to serve up some salsa-soul fusion. A-side "La Rumba" is particularly wonderful, with mazy trumpet and saxophone solos wrapping themselves around strong female vocals, a hip-wiggling rhythm and plenty of layered percussion hits. It's sweet and summery, as you'd perhaps expect, and should find favour with the likes of Snowboy and Gilles Peterson. Flipside "My Little Baby" sees the combo move further towards traditional Cuban territory via a stronger horn section, Tuto Puente style drums and breezy English vocals.

Review: The love of all things Soviet and disco has been established by French/German duo Fulgeance and Scientist for several years now, having reached a peak last year with their album The Soviet Tape on First Word. Now they return with their own edit series on brand new label Excursions. With eyes squared fully on the floor, each obscurity is given some serious groove muscle for the floor... Charaunitsy's soulful croons and yearning horns are given an additional kick/snare swing, Latvia's Mirdza gets a deliciously camp turbo charge while Ukraine's Tatyana Kochergina gets a full-on Philly treatment with lavish strings and a bassline that won't say nyet.

Arena Twist (Funky Bompa edit)
Review: The infamous Brussels based DJ/tropical party promoter Funky Bompa launched the Bompa Discos label in earnest last year as an outlet for the growing stockpile of heavily requested personal edits made for club usage. The strictly limited pressings and a policy of no represses meant the debut release was highly sought after, and this long overdue second dinked 45 from Bompa Disco is likely to be first come first served. Funky Bompa leads with a spooked out cover version of the super-classic Colombian theme "Cumbia Sampuesana" and stays in South America on the flip, reworking a sixties exotica cover version of Aram Khachaturian's "Sabre Dance" that has it's roots in Peru.

REPRESS ALERT!!: Funkyjaws is the Belarusian DJ and producer Sergey Abramov, who you might have previously spotted on Kolour LTD and Shadeleaf Music, often alongside Four Walls. Now a new start up label from St Petersburg has called on Abramov to inaugurate their imprint with his incredibly funky touch, leading in with the sweaty Afrobeat thump of "Ole Ole" and following up in fine style with the sprightly "Heavy Salsa Pushka Bassline", where salsa rips, rudeboy breaks and disco strut gleefully bounce off each other. However, unlike its companion, SSS016 is more of a boogie monster, and Gordon Henderson's "The Highest Bidder" is a tune that is just so easily hummed thanks to its inimitable vocal, while "Hard World" is more of a stone-cold floor-filler with its fast-paced groove and gritty electronic feel. Both unmissable, both total killers. No surprises here - Sofrito doing what the label does best.

Review: Part of a series of reissues by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids. Once privately pressed, Rhapsody In Berlin is the result of an extensive exploration of Africa before returning to the German capital. Both sides are built around one hooky refrain as each player takes the lead and the momentum into brave new areas. With a robust support from the heavy funk guitar backline and overwhelmingly funky drums, it's all about range of horns (muted or otherwise), flutes and pygmy flutes that weave tightly into each other with a sense of natural chaos. As the name of Idris's San Fran dance troupe suggests, this is a bona fide cultural odyssey.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, but otherwise in excellent condition***

The Banana Hill crew continue in their quest to represent some of the finest sounds transmitting from the African continent, this time showcasing the immersive ruminations of Kenya's Jinku. "A1" takes a seriously deep trip into stripped back house percussion and atmospheric vocal chants, while "N1" sports a more jagged rhythm section that meanders through emotive suites of sound before the mellower downtempo mood of "N2". On the flip, "A2" features moody vocal turns from Loa Myst and Nu Fvnk that suit the laconic house structure, which El Buho gently nudges into a more crooked remix without losing the heady atmosphere. Sooma then tackles "A1" and ups the bass-led house pressure with a measured touch that respectfully embellishes the original.
