Review: Something in the Eastern European house and dance music proclivity has always struck us as enduringly authentic, perhaps due to its interest in folk music fusions; the label Sad Fun have surely played a key part in doling out this impression. Now they offer their latest addition to the fantasy with a label-described "true Estonian lowkey gem" in the form of duo Ajukaja & Edith Karlson, aka. Vana, whose combined efforts frankly, dustily and ironically toy with the pop music cliches native to their homeland. A-and-B-siders 'Vimme Ratsu' and 'Kuu Maa' are said to rework an '80s Estonian coastal folk-pop favourite and perform a "pseudo-reggae" pastiche respectively. Both have that effortless murmured charm on the vocals, recalling a nostalgic time of European make-do, A10-mic-from-the-junk-store, bottle episodic, rickety recorded goodness.

Review: First popping up on our radar in 2020 - or rather hurling itself onto it with all the subtlety punk can muster - Common Sense gets a reissue and not before time. Outspoken but never outgunned, Swedes Viagra Boys rightly courted some serious praise with 2022's album, Cave World, so it makes sense to revisit this epic EP in a bid to get newcomers acquainted with what came before. Opening on the title number, things may not sound quite as you'd expect. While known for their ability to wield bloody-lipped chargers, 'Common Sense' owes as much to shoegaze and synth rock as it does punk variants, immediately marking the outfit out as something not quite so easy to define. Nevertheless, 'Lick the Bang' is straight up topless sweatbox material, and 'Sentinel Island' centres our brains on wonderfully distorted and frayed riffs. Closing on the slow, nostalgia-hued 'Blue', it's quite the collection.

Review: McCartney III was the18th solo album by legendary musician and former Beatle Paul McCartney. Imagined is the remix version that came digitally back in April and now lands on vinyl. This collection gathers best sub 100bpm cuts form that time, as assembled by Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley. Fun fact - the artwork for the LP is a picture from the new book on acid house by photographer Dave Swindells which is well worth copping if you can.

Review: The Vacant Lots is a Brooklyn based duo who drops their new album this Autumn. It was written under isolation during the Covid pandemic and is quite possibly Jared Artaud and Brian MacFadyen's best work yet. The eight tunes might be minimal in design but they are maximum in intent and intensity with minimalist post-punk/synth-pop sounds all coming on strong. Over the top of the sounds comes smart, pithy lyrics with plenty of guitar agues and a darkness that brings to mind New Order and Jesus And Mary Chain. Add in the ever present spirt of New York and you have a fine album.

Review: Sharon Van Etten is in a philosophical mood on her sixth album, We've Been Going About This All Wrong, offering up a series of songs concerned with considering "how we feel, mourn and reclaim our agency when we think the world may be falling apart". While her lyrical inspirations may be weighty, the American singer-songwriter has a knack of cloaking her deeply personal words - delivered emotively, as you'd expect - in beautiful arrangements. Some of these bristle with her trademark "dark drums" and breath-takingly poignant synth sounds, while others are sparse and stripped-back, with just an acoustic guitar backing Van Etten's voice. She's kept the album under wraps - refusing, surprisingly, to release any teaser singles - but it's definitely been worth the wait.

Review: There is, quite simply, so much to like about Vanishing Twin. In many ways they can be your everything, providing that everything is sitting in a room packed with psychedelic patterns, contemplating mind expansion beyond opioids. If you're looking for abrasive sounds, this ain't for you. However, those searching for a woozy combination of 1960s hippy and weird prog folk will find themselves at home.

Review: In many ways, Strum & Thrum is the antithesis to most rarity compilations. Whereas the majority go for the 'unearthing of cool' approach, the Capture Tracks label has opted to collate a huge play list of tunes that really aren't that cool at all. It does, however, reflect the roots and influences of the imprint's roster artists, and a specific time and scene in the history of American indie rock that is often overlooked. Namely one that ignored much of the unkempt and raw energy that was pervading guitar music's underground at the moment.

Review: There's an awful lot going on here, and as such plenty to talk about. Alternative Funk: Volume 1 is both a compilation and reissue, with the original outing landing on cassette in the early-1980s on VP231, a label set up by Pacific 231, AKA Pierre Jolivet. The albums were the brainchild of Axel Kyrou and Francis Man, founders of the legendary Vox Populi!, and their aim was to showcase far out sounds, at least som of which were their own.
What we have in the modern iteration is a snapshot of that expansive and often hallucinatory aural odyssey, with seminal and lesser known artists resting side-by-side on the track list. Stylistically broad, running the gamut from dub percussion to cold wave and industrial, it's yet more evidence of just how fertile a decade the 80s were.

Review: Having previously celebrated dance and pop hits of the 1980s, the long-running Now That's What I Call Music series - itself established that decade - has turned its attention to "alternative". It's a catch-all term that basically includes anything with indie roots, meaning a mix of goth, post-punk, indie, new wave, indie-dance and skewed synth-pop that emerged from the underground rather than the A&R departments of major labels. The biggest name in British chart pop compilations, NOW, turns its hand to spotlighting less obvious tracks from the decade that gave birth to the entire franchise. Review: Cabaret Sauvage is one of the most unique venues in the world. Situated in Park de la Villette in north-central Paris, the circus-styled institution hosts live gigs and club events featuring celebrated artists from across the globe, and has been doing this since first opening in 1997. It now gets a special anniversary reissue on four sides of translucent red wax with all the original standouts present and correct - from the smooth jungle of E Z Rollers to the macing James Brown cut 'The Boss' via Junior Murvin's smokers' anthem 'Police & Thieves', reliving this one is always well worth it.

Review: Despite the style's influence and enduring legacy, shoegaze has not been celebrated with a raft of compilations and retrospectives. Waves of Distortion attempts to set the record straight via two discs of classic (and occasionally overlooked) shoegaze gems recorded and released at different points between 1990 and 2022. It offers a neat overview of the sound and some its greatest practitioners, flitting between the glistening, reverb-laden dream pop of Slowdive, the bowl cut-sporting loved-up swagger of Ride, the densely layered country-shoegaze haziness of Telescope, the jaunty jangly-ness of AR Kane and Spirea X, the psychedelic heaviness of Ringo Deathstarr, the tactile bliss of Beach House and the slow-burn, post-rock majesty of Mogwai.

Review: NME's mail-order 'C86' compilation, released way back in 1986, has become something of a cherished time capsule: an acclaimed, on-point collection that summed up indie and alternative rock in the mid 1980s. This three-disc compilation is touted by Cherry Red as a "prequel" to that legendary comp. It naturally features some of the same artists - usually in the form of earlier tracks or obscurities - as well as the rest of the cream of the crop of indie in 1985. There are pre-fame recordings from James, the Stone Roses and Primal Scream, jangly guitars aplenty, and killer cuts from bands that briefly flickered brightly but time has generally forgotten.

Review: It's hard not to fall for the version of 'Stayin' Alive' featured on the Dominic Lewis-scored and curated soundtrack to Bullet Train - the 2022 David Leitch movie that unfolds on one of Japan's world-famous, super speedy, and appropriately nicknamed 'bullet trains'. The composer made some smart decisions pulling the choices together, opting to focus largely on East Asian pop and rock, with some bold inclusions. One of which is the aforementioned opener. In so far as overuse goes, The Bee Gees' seminal disco anthem is up there with the greatest, and that makes it difficult to find something new to enjoy in it. Drafting Avu-chan, of Japanese 'fashion punks' Queen Bee achieved the unthinkable, then, and sets the tone for a number of excellent covers by Japanese artists (Bonnie Tyler's 'Holding Out For A Hero' by Miki Asakura, 'Kill Me Pretty' by Tamio Okuda of Unicorn), alongside an impressive set of originals from Ryuichi Sakamoto, Carmen Maki, and more.

Review: It should take about two seconds to realise, if you didn't already know, that Eddie Vedder is the voice of Pearl Jam, one of the finest rock bands to come out of the US in the late stages of the 20th Century, and one of the outfit's four (yes, four) guitarists. Ranked by none other than Rolling Stone magazine as the seventh finest lead singer of all time, it's safe to say he's the kind of pedigree you want to venture out as a soloist.
Now four albums in his own name deep, Earthling may not be rewriting any rule books or pushing boundaries and our perception of what's possible, but it is an incredibly well conceived and executed heavy rock 'n' roll album, showcasing a man with seemingly infinite creative energy, here unleashing a combination of heartfelt alt, breakneck garage-grunge, and searing big room stuff that you'll struggle to forget after hearing just once. Review: Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, John Cale, Doug Yule, Maureen Tucker and - a little later - Nico broke the mould with their efforts as The Velvet Underground. The Andy Warhol-managed and produced cult rock icons helped lay the foundations for New Wave and punk about a decade before either sound really started to make inroads in any circles, let alone commercial ones. And, listening back to any of their records now, the music itself isn't just a significant bookmark theoretically: it all still sounds incredible today.
Todd Haynes' highly recommendable documentary charts at least some of that story in a commendable way, more so when you consider it arrived around 50 years after the original lineup disbanded. Using interviews with surviving members Cale and Tucker, alongside archive footage, music and other material, it paints a vivid portrait of an equally vivid band. With tracks by them in question, Bo Diddley, The Primitives and The Diablos, this OST helps colour that picture, and era, properly.

Review: Adorning his long hair on the cover, Kurt Vile returns with his seventh solo album Bottle It In which has the charm of a rare, golden find inside of a dusty Seattle record store. At 13 tracks long, interestingly enough three clock in at an epic 10 minutes long. It's an album that graces various themes of dark psyche within dreamy soundscapes of crackles and feedback underneath an ensemble of roomy drums, finger-picking guitars and other folky sentimentalities. There's mellifluous flow to the record, with the hip lyrical content of "Cold Was The Wind" a highlight and stand out alongside the washed out beach blues of "Skinny Mini" and unique album closer "(Bottle Back)".

Review: It has been some time since we had new stuff from Kurt Vile, and in many ways what's here isn't completely fresh. Not that we're complaining. Take 'Another Good Year For the Roses', for example, featuring Stella Mozgawa and Cate Le Bon, with the latter also credited as producer. Although this is the first time we've heard it, the track has roots in 2019, when those three names, alongside Rob Laakso, Chris Cohen and Adam Langellotti, were together at Stinson Beach, California. Four years later it was finally finished and leads this selection of tunes which also includes 'Constant Repeat', a wonderful cover of Charli XCX, and the epic title piece 'Back To The Moon'. Side notes done, the package sounds like everything you've fallen in love with Vile for over the years - sharp, almost-jarringly honesty writing, beautiful instrumentation with psychedelic and beachside hues equally audible.

The original music has all been fully remastered and now included alongside it on the 2 x CD version is a selection of never before heard rarities and remixes which take in some unheard rough mixes of tracks such as 'Ballad.' This clear vinyl press has one of the band's best-known tunes in 'Baby Turns Blue' which was produced by Wire's Colin Newman and is an examination of purity and beauty. A real rock classic.
