Review: There has been plenty said about debutants L'Epee since their single "Dreams" turned heads back in spring. Combining the talents of Anton Newcombe (The Brian Jonestown Massacre), French artist Emmanuelle Seigner, and polished-to-a-sheen pop outfit The Liminanas, it's one of the most refreshing (and French) things you're likely to hear all year. That's more of a reference to the cinematic feeling that defines the album, owing much to the femme fatale vocal delivery, rather than the language each line is sung in. At once evoking the smoky cool of Serge Gainsbourg and the opiate moods of The Velvet Underground, "Diabolique" feels born in a time when psychedelic experimentation and chart topping music weren't mutually exclusive. At once sophisticated and hedonistic, it's a sexy, sensual and overwhelmingly seductive effort everyone should turn themselves on to.

Review: It's been ticking on three years since Cate Le Bon gave us Crab Day, the Welsh singer-songwriter's third album before now. With horns very much a focal point in Le Bon's unique sound throughout the album, it's their fusion with synths that really accent their impact. Breezy, post-90s jazz numbers that nudge at memories of shoegaze and The Cranberries make their way into early sections of the album too, with playful French pop gestures finding their way through motifs of art rock and New Yorkian post punk and new wave. Given a slighty different slant as it's sung through a welsh guise, Le Bon's ability to carry celtic-like themes through her music furthermore adds to a subtle mysticism in her sound that's playful and bluesy with a folk touch.

Review: Following the long awaited return of Gang Gang Dance, New York glam rock brothers, Brian D'Addario and Michael D'Addario, aka The Lemon Twigs, quietly but surely make their way on to legendary label 4AD once more. It's been two years since their Do Hollywood LP and the pair - with the help of their parents (really) - deliver 15 tracks that according to the band tell a "heartbreaking coming of age story of Shane, a pure of heart chimpanzee raised as a human boy as he comes to terms with the obstacles of life." Satire, irony, haircuts, glam rock. Yes, it's a musical...what, you didn't know?

Review: Some super cool sound design to open Jenny Lewis' fourth album for Warner, and it's enough to send the heads of Radiohead fans spinning. This all happens in the first few seconds of the LP's opening, before bursting into a song-soaked ballad of lessons learned, folky stomp boxes and whiskey-laced songwriting. "Red Bull & Hennessey" for example, socially plays with jingle of a wild west cantina, with strokes of Shania Twain and Dire Straits instrumentation mixed with the slightest of pop Madonna and LeAnn Rimes. It's quite a combo to listen to all fixed up in a faded acid wash. There's dubby tropes and funk to be heard in "Little White Dove" too, while solo pianos washed in reverb offer the album a touch of folk classical as well. Our favourite: "Dogwood" is also the one to catch on that tip too.

Review: Not many people would have put a bet on The Libertines making a third album, yet here it is, as bold as brass and portraying a band in the kind of rude health that would have been considered unthinkable a decade or so ago. Producer Jake Gosling, most famous as an A-list pop producer, may have polished the ditties of the Wilfred Owen-referencing 'Anthems For Doomed Youth' to a sheen, yet the band's ragtag charm and romantic bluster is still present and correct, and indeed the irony may be that beyond all the hyperbole and drug-fuelled acrimony of their heyday, the band appear to be firing on all cylinders now as never before.

Review: Is Stephen Duffy the UK's most underrated songwriter? Well, quite possibly, yes. It takes commitment and passion to lead a band for 30 years, especially when the outfit's line-up changes come thick and fast. Despite the inconsistent players, though, in that time the man at the centre of it all has built a back catalogue of exquisite work during that time. "Return To Us" isn't going to ruin that track record. It plays out like a parable of lilting folk fables underscored by a sense of nostalgia, delivered through the voice and song craft of a man whose life experiences have left him bruised and worn but never down and out. Melodic, emotive and engrossing, LP number ten is as timeless as the previous nine, leaving nobody under any illusions as to how precious this project really is.

Review: Lancaster's finest oddball psych-punk couple return with their punningly titled fifth album 'This Is Eggland'. Choosing to step away from their DIY sound, 'This Is Eggland' is the result of a collaboration with producer Dave Fridmann, the man behind some of psychedelic indie heavyweights The Flaming Lips' and Mercury Rev's work. This new-found polish works in the band's favour, making them sound bigger and punchier than ever whilst letting them keep things suitably rough around the edges. Their music champions the pursuit of an unconventional and non-conformist lifestyle, a mantra that the band themselves stride towards, seeking to antidote commercial mediocrity with a whirlwind of audacious and in-your-face belters. 'This Is Eggland' is a serious step up for the band, but in retaining The Lovely Eggs' hallmarks, thrashing garage-punk jams and jaunty wig-outs, it makes for a satisfying return from the duo.

Review: Minnesota couple Low have been around the block, lets say roughly 25 times, and it's been the Seattle-based Sub Pop label that's really become home to their music after several drops for the ambient-laced Kranky. I mean, hey, some have even called their music 'dinner party epochal'. Static and noise and other more experimental techniques in production provide a livid colour to this album, take in "Dancing in Blood" for example, with its industrial and subdued goth influences, or the pumping white noise and distortion of album opener "Quorum". Further down the tracklist is "Fly", a naturally melancholic number but far from depressive, with this track in particular hitting a sweet spot in the same way Massive Attack's "Teardrop" does. Very cool LP.

Review: While touring their 2016 album 'Eyeland', The Low Anthem were involved in a near-fatal crash, destroying their instruments and bringing the tour to a halt. Following this, band leader Ben Knox Miller began writing and recording demos at home which would form the basis of a new album and - once band members had recovered from injuries - they developed the sketches into 'The Salt Doll Went Down To Measure The Depth Of The Sea', a record inspired by a Buddhist fable and stemming directly from the band's personal experiences. In its tone, the album is markedly different from their previous upbeat and energetic indie-folk work. 'The Salt Doll...' is richly layered; lush string arrangements, cyclic percussive phrases, spacious synth bleeps and Miller's hushed vocals create an immersive soundscape that's impossible not to be drawn into. Though it was borne out of narrowly avoiding tragedy, 'The Salt Doll...' is a remarkably hopeful album that is as calming as it is delicately poignant.
