Review: Britain is on the very cusp of the post-Thatcher era, mistakes not necessarily learnt from the past 11 years, but certainly evidence mounting for the failure of individualism and the importance of communities. Change is needed, and change is what the next decade would bring. Some of which began with this album, unveiled in 1989, now regarded among the best shoegaze outings of all time. The label doesn't sit that well with us, though. There's just too much else happening with Pale Saints' pacy, expansive and utterly compelling debut. Post punk accents, eruptions into (and introductions based on) pure noise, and surrealist dream pop. Presented here in a new collector's edition, featuring recordings from the band's seminal John Peel session and demos, we couldn't think of a band so deserving of being discovered by a new generation, and re-celebrated by those who were there at the time.

Review: Panda Bear aka Noah Lennox has been one of the more prolific solo artists to come out of the Animal Collective fold. Buoys presents a second album on UK independent Domino and his sixth solo album overall offers something of a new direction. Made in co-production with Rusty Santos (from The Present) the pair have delivered a work routed in hip hop and beat-making inspirations taking Panda Bear's music into a dubby and bass music realm. At times reminiscent of Ed Banger & Mr. Oizo quirkiness, alongside a trademark guitar sound and vocals drenched in reverb, the dub culture influence mixed in with the folk, and pop abnormalities, prove there's a deep layer of experimentation to Panda Bear's music yet.

Review: Half journeyman, half David Lynch bar scene, all twisted crooner-dom, and at least a little tongue in cheek, Mike Patton & Jean Claude Vannier are aiming straight for the alternatives with this 12-strong collection of bizarre ballads and obscure odes that will appeal to rarer tastebuds. There's the spoken word and strummed guitars guiding us through the various parts of "A Schoolgirl's Day". The Sinatra-does-sarcasm of closer "Pink & Bleue", and the way "Hungry Ghost" aurally recalls "Everybody Knows" by Leonard Cohen. Truly unique stuff, despite its debt of gratitude to troubadour totems, counterculture rock and The Rat Pack, it's as rooted in the 21st Century as anything you'll hear today. The production process involved two creators in two different parts of the world, Patton and band in L.A., Vannier with a full orchestra in Vienna. Not that you can tell considering how complete the record feels.

Review: It's not without good reason that people have been likening Peel Dream Magazine to My Bloody Valentine, Stereolab and Yo La Tengo. Helmed by Joe Stevens, one of New York's finest contemporary players, the outfit makes music that's tender but savage, powerful but delicate and packed with beautiful discordance hiding its sumptuous melodies. 'Agitprop Alterna' is their second full-length release and it certainly adds fuel to the argument that people need to take this lot very seriously. In addition to the aforementioned, here it nods to Velvet Underground (notice the tripped out, opiate-hazed interludes throughout the album) and krautrock-leaning art pop. The record drones, drives, grooves and perplexes on its course, but most of all it unarguably impresses. Or at least that's what we've got to say on the matter.

Review: A decade in the making, and then some, Jack Penate's third album is finally ready, with a little help from Paul Epworth, former Spankrock member and jazz percussionist Alex Epton, and Inflo. The canvas painted is both broad and coherent, taking in influences such as disco, folk and classic pop, which may sound disparate but, in this form at least, feels like a bizarrely natural combination. Testament to the artist, tracks like "Murder" - with their bumbling dancefloor rhythm and power synth line - sit comfortably between "Cipralex"'s delicate plucked acoustic guitars, falsetto lyrical delivery and rumbling low end; and the epic piano arpeggiations of heartstring-pulling instrumental "Gemini", with its samples of Penate's grandfather, Mervyn Peake, as read by his uncle Fabian. Elsewhere, "Round and Round" could be labelled lo-fi broken rave balladry, while "Swept To The Sky" closes out on a powerful and uplifting declaration of love.

Review: Most widely known as the front man for '70s rock and roll outfit The Only Ones, Peter Perrett returns once again with Humanworld, his second album since signing to Domino. Perrett successfully resurfaced in 2017 with How The West Was Won, an album that saw him chart in the UK and star on BBC Newsnight. Humanworld, then, does its best again to dissect romance and politics with Perrett's trademark sense of sardonic wit and wry humour. "I'm fully aware there are a lot of people who never even thought I'd get to make another album, let alone two, in such a short time," Perrett has been quoted saying, and with a production credit going to Peter's son Jamie who contributed to "Master Of Destruction", the album rejoices in one's ability to defy the odds. For fans of Dylan, Velvet Underground and Nick Cave for sure.

Review: There's a grandiose, finishing credits vibe to the first track on Pinegrove's latest (and first for the legendary Rough Trade label). Solid guitars, melodic vocals and staccato piano riffs mark this out as emotionally-charged garage rock from the off, although don't expect this to be all the perfect soundtrack to a boozy Saturday with friends in your flat. Things become a little more sombre, or at least introverted and self-reflective as the tracks move on. "The Alarmist" sounds like a man having his heart stamped on by crushed dreams and shattered illusions, somehow finding strength to continue until the real gritty chords land. The final chapter, "Marigold" itself, is a whispering, atmospheric thing of staggering beauty that closes us out with a meditative offering. Tracks like "Hairpin" satisfy desires for classic folk traditions - more whisky on the veranda than microbrewery bottles in a Brooklyn apartment.

Review: Dutch indie four piece spearheaded by its singer-songwriter Pip Blom realise their debut album, Boat. Delivered by a label associated with artists like Mattiel and Amber Arcades, Plip Blom see themselves in good company to deliver a full length LP following a run of 7" & 10" singles. The album features previously heard numbers like "Daddy Issues", a riffing example of the band's quick, almost surf rock style, with other semi-ironic titles like "Bedhead" offering something sentimental. With a host of other raucous and heavy distorted numbers too, Pip Blom's music falls somewhere between The Strokes, Hole and the best of alternative but radio friendly punk and garage rock.

Review: When the end days come and it's finally time to write the complete story of American rock 'n' roll, surely Pixies will get their own chapter. Legends of the grunge world, often known for a stylistic simplicity (quiet-LOUD anyone?) but unafraid to go out on a psychedelic limb when the moment suits, they've towered above the majority of acts for 28 years and, as "Beneath The Eyrie" proves, still have plenty to say. "In The Arms of Mrs Mark Of Cain" starts proceedings on a gothic-Western hybrid tip, setting things up perfectly for any song named "Graveyard Hill". Realistically when that track does arrive it switches the mood with a nod to the band's archetypal punk-infused sound, and that's precisely the point. Apparently betting the farm on this one, it's got everything from psych-folk to Tim Burton-ish ghoulish wit, making for the band's finest hour since their 2004 reformation.

Review: Bella Union's newest faces are Norwegian group Pom Poko whose best and most steely expressions in press shots go some length to reveal the youthful angst and playfulness of their multicoloured, poppy punk sound. That said, there's glimpses of Mars Volta instrumentation in tracks like "Milk Trust", and "If U Want Me 2 Stay" does a good job at building a wall of noise like My Bloody Valentine would, but really the group's true aesthetic lies within an indie mould intrinsic to Scandinavia while still thrashing about the place with a melee of high energy guitars, drums and rebellious vocals (maybe even some bagpipes in "My Blood") to deliver a album your parents might not get, but the headbands and spray jackets waiting at the door a generation after the Modular wave will.

Review: The build up to this one has been notable. Back in 2016, Porridge Radio's "garden shed recorded" LP, "Rice, Pasta And Other Fillers" landed to critical acclaim if not a huge audience. That said, combined with a few impressive demos they have garnered a real following over the years, and as such their debut studio long form comes at a point when for many this lot feel less like a new band, and more of a secret weapon. There's a vast range of influences here, with both The Cranberries and Charli XCX cited in the release notes. Overall you might be more surprised at the latter than the former when you hear the work - it's born of a guitar world rather than electronic pop, with the track entitled "Pop Song" - actually a disparate and heartfelt swooning slice of melancholia - hitting that point right on the head. Exceptional DIY stuff.

Review: Jessica Pratt's third solo album is a blessing from the start, with opener, "Opening Night", setting the album's tone as a sojourn through a fresh but solemn memory, like strolling through a mist swept pasture. With Pratt's unique vocal ranging tied up in a mix of space, crackle and forgotten reverie, her vocals at times sounding as if they're lost somewhere in a wireless ether. With softly played chords and delicate strumming sitting in tune with dreamy interludes and folky motifs, City Slang have arguably dropped their best record for 2019 first.

Review: The Psychedelic Furs are back with what is their eighth album overall, but their first studio work since 1991's World Outside. These highly influential post punk stars are in exhilarating form right from the first powerful opening bars. The band sound fresh and enthused, with aggression and ambience driving the dynamics. Richard Butler its the powerful voice and strong lyrical presence on the alum while his brother Tim lays it down on bass. Many years of constant touring have kept the band at the bleeding edge and they are in fact scheduled to return to London to headline the Royal Albert Hall in April 2021.

Review: The composite word 'pop-punk' might be enough to strike fear into the heart of many a punter, yet rest assured that PWR BTTM, despite being loosely that, are one of the most refreshing and irreverent troupes in any genre distinction to have emerged in the last decade, and far removed from the Fat Wreck/Epitaph axis. An explicitly queer take on a glam-tinged and raucous sound, 'Pageant' builds on the promise of their debut, striking a balance between sincerity and sarcasm whilst dealing out chorus as maddeningly catchy as they are engagingly camp. Ignore the glitter-tinged gung-ho attack of PWR BTTM at your peril.
