Review: The third album from Marika Hackman, and arguably her most honest and exposed to date. An artist who has tangibly progressed from what was already a head start, it's a complex record that seems to be the sum of the artist's previous parts. A proud and forthright declaration of someone arriving at where they want to be wouldn't be putting it too far. It's scuzzy, desolate, bleak and then at the same time energetic, poised, guttural, disco. Tracks such as "Send My Love" couldn't be more emotionally charged, but nor could they be more inviting- somewhere between this life and the next- inviting and then visceral. Flip it and find "Conventional Ride" and "Come Undone" as two tracks that are entirely different but share one thing in common; a heartbreaking work of extraordinary genius.

Review: In many ways, The Invisible Girls was one of the more curious products of the Factory Records production line. Initially founded by legendary producer Martin Hannett and keyboardist Steve Hopkins in 1978 to provide backing tracks for poet John Cooper Clarke, they went on to release a number of singles with singer/songwriter Pauline Murray. Intriguingly, this first retrospective ignores their work with Clarke and Murray, instead focusing on largely unreleased experiments that touch on ambient, jazz, wayward electronics, Section 22 style post-punk darkness, and occasional forays into dub disco-influenced new wave noodling. It's a fascinating collection, and includes a suite of tracks ("All Sorts of Heroes") that brilliantly pitches Hopkins' jazz-influenced piano playing against Hannett's vivid imagination with predictably thrilling results.

Review: While it had only been a few months since the release of her 4 Track Demos project, when To Bring You My Love first arrived in 1994 it felt like it had been a long time coming. Taking elements that made her early studio efforts stand out - the twisted mania of Dry and the Patti Smith-esque agony of Rid of Me - here Polly Jean Harvey fully embraced a kind of pained grunge-blues.

The resulting brew is particularly potent. Whether you're listening to the hushed, mysterious groove of 'Working For The Man', 'Long Snake Moan''s dark metal edges, or the sparse, troubled and deeply pained anthem 'Teclo', everything here is clearly the work of a genius. A fact that rings particularly true given these stunning versions represent her work in its original demo form.

Review: PJ Harvey made an instant impact with her 1992 debut album "Dry", a set that she subsequently described as an "extreme" record due to the intensity of her work on it. The album remains one of her finest works, in part because the distinctive sound she crafted (famously described as "low-slung guitar poems" by NME reviewer Andrew Collins) was so sharply defined. When it was originally released, the first 5000 CD copies came bundled with a bonus disc of demo versions. She's now made that available as a standalone CD, allowing younger fans and those who missed out first time round to enjoy the decidedly raw, lo-fi and pleasingly sparse sound of these essential early versions of some of her finest songs.

Review: It might just be us, but the third record from Spanish garage guitar wielders Hinds feels like a marked change of path for the rightly acclaimed outfit. It's certainly an altogether less growling and bloody-nosed affair than their first record, and to a lesser extent 2018's 'I Don't Run'. Which isn't to say this development is a negative thing. Of course not everything here sounds like the retro-pop of 'Good Bad Times', which is a colourful, upbeat and synthy introduction to their new work. 'Just Like Kids' is a far more raucous and unconventional stomper. 'Take Me Back' shows the power of pared back arrangements, echoed riffs accentuating the feeling of space. And 'This Moment Forever' is a low slung, downtrodden delight. Altogether sweeter, but still capable of knocking anyone out, if Hinds weren't already close to your heart they should be after this.

Review: It's been a long time between drinks for Toronto's most explicitly named band, a hardware loving, laptop-shunning four-piece that were once signed to XL Recordings/Young Turks. "Deleter" is not only their first studio set for four years, but also their first self-released album. They hit the ground running via a fine hybrid indie/electronic collaboration with Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor ("Luxe"), before working their way through loose-limbed analogue funk ("Deleters"), shoegaze-influenced wall-of-sound bliss ("Endless"), skewed electro-disco stompers (the Moroder-influenced "Moment") and the kind of jangling indie-dance numbers that should prove popular with fringe-sporting misfits the world over.

Review: Prepare to be confounded and confused, but more importantly hugely entertained. If this is your first encounter with The Homesick let's put it like this - the Dutch guitar-driven eccentrics baffled plenty with their debut long form, 2017's "Youth Hunt", and are back on similarly leftfield form here.

In many ways "The Big Exercise" is a more logical record, and it's just as musically accomplished. Calling on elements of post punk and epic wall-of-sound fare, while still managing to include folksy nuances (or even full tracks, such as opener "What's In Store"), it's the fact the band set these instrumentations to such bizarre themes that makes the whole thing so unexpected. But on this second album subject matters are more coherent and contextualised, from struggling with sleep paralysis to that eternal sense of longing. It's an enormously inventive work by an outfit that don't seem to care about boundaries or genre rules.

  9. The Night
  10. Good Together
  11. One At A Time Please
  12. FHKD
Review: This East London duo honed their style in their own studios, sculpting a homespun sound that marries electronic innovation with a warmly soulful approach redolent of a welcome British answer to the glitzy R&B more commonly found across the Atlantic - kneed that rendered bt self-admitted heroes of this pair such as Usher. Yet boasting a neon-drenched late night aesthetic that's somehow maintains enough brio and quirky charm to avoid it sounding like the soundtrack to a perfume advert, 'Warm On A Cold Night' is as sleek and sophisticated as it is earthy and characterful.

Review: 'Fanfare For Effective Freedom' might be one of the most beguiling things we've heard in quite some time. Opening the scoring on this very impressive outing from Horse Lords, it's a staccato but somehow smooth ode to the beauty of plucked guitars and layered arrangements, acting as a magnificent gateway to what follows. To call this psychedelic would be misleading, it's more likely to fit in with people's ideas of progressive rock combined with a kind of loose indie, but then none of these really hit nails on heads either. Repetitive loops bring about a feeling of hypnosis, tracks like 'People's Park' gathering elements as they move, creating the kind of build usually reserved for electronic dance music. A truly special five-tracker from a band you'd do well to make further investigations into.

Review: The immaculately suave and stylish duo Hurts, formed of synthesist Adam Anderson & vocalist Theo Hutchcraft are back with their fourth full-length 'Desire'. The album is packed with huge, stadium-filling anthems, as we've come to expect from them. However, the more curious moments come from track such as the stripped back ballad 'Chaperone', or the heavily Prince-inspired 'Boyfriend', or the infectious neo-soul of 'Spotlights'. Matching the duo, this production is equally slick, and this fourth missive is as impressive, heady and irresistible as any of their previous.
