Cat: SMR 31. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Sea Parade (14:59)
  2. To Know Nothing (8:34)
Review: Tim Green has become well known for crafting massive techno rollers with that little something extra which makes them standout. He has been behind a number of epic summer anthems on the likes of Cocoon before now and here lands on Moscow's Shanti Radio with two more well crafted tunes, but ones that go a little deeper. Both are of course carefully melodic affairs. The first, 'Sea Parade' is awash with churchy chords and gently swaying drums that sink you into a reverie. Delicate vocal sounds, shakers and dreamy pads all add to the illusion. 'To Know Nothing' is an angelic roller that All Day I Dream fans will lap up.

  1. Locked Out (7:20)
  2. The Red Face Roller (6:53)
  3. Start Again (5:46)
  4. Leg Le Friend (8:19)
Review: Henry Hyde is back on his usual stomping ground of NorthSouth with some peppy club workouts to get wiggy to. "Locked Out" has plenty of tripped out tones bubbling around the sturdy, Lately bass-fed groove, while "The Red Face Roller" gets more playful with the synth lines without losing the steady, sleek rhythm section. "Start Again" switches the mood but retains the palette, making great use of a grinding bass note to anchor the sprightly blips and dubby bleeps up top. "Leg Le Friend" goes further into the influence of early UK techno with its ethereal pads and intricate melodic elements, capturing the kind of vibe you might have heard on Likemind with a cheeky modern twist.

  1. The Uprise (3:59)
  2. Ghetto Love (7:58)
  3. That Vibe (6:57)
Review: Longtime Detroit badman Patrice Scott ensures Christmas comes early for all lovers of deep house. This EP on his own Sistrum is a real doozy that opens with the slow and purposeful kicks of 'The Uprise,' a real beatdown gem. 'Ghetto Love' is explores more of his usual realm - cavernous musical depths that encourage your mind to wander and get lost in amongst the wispy pads and curious motifs. Last of all, 'That Vibe' brings a very subtle sense of Motor City party, with soulful chords and upbeat kicks embellished with playful Rhodes work. Timeless stuff for sure.

  1. Saudade For Salvador (12:26)
  2. Saudade For Salvador (Ile Axe dub) (5:20)
  3. Saudade For Salvador (Ron Trent Romantic Flight interpretation) (12:23)
Review: Gigi Testa digs deep on this one and comes up with a superbly spiritual new offering that is focused on an Afr-Brazilian musical tradition. And that is manipulating live instruments and electronic machines into new forms, with respect and reverence for each, and the end product as shown here is magically melodic music with spirit, storytelling power, and escapist atmospheres all married to a subtle samba beat. It makes perfect sense that next to the original, the one and only deep house master Ron Trent steps up to serve up one of his Romantic Flight interpretations and leads the track into new realms.

Cat: MAP 016. Rel: 04 Dec 20
  1. Black Romantic (vocal) (8:52)
  2. Black Romantic (instrumental) (8:52)
Review: The original deep house master Ron Trent is back with one more soul soothing and utterly cathartic outing before this most turbulent of years draws to a close. This is the third release from his forthcoming Romantic Flight album and is a real house lament. He is in particularly spiritual mode here with 'Black Romantic' being a delicate house dance with sprinklings of percussion, acoustic guitar sounds and streaming synths all sinking you into a reverie while vocals drift up top. The instrumental removes that vocal and so ore focus is on the fantastic arrangement and instrumentation. Lush.

  3. Serpentine Tale (6:02)
  4. The Introducer (8:10)
Review: Although rarely spoken about in hushed tones, Peter Adshead AKA Baby Ford is one of British house and techno's true pioneers. As many readers will know, he spent the first decade of his career exploring acid house and rave, before switching to a deeper and more minimalistic techno and tech-house sound towards the end of the '90s. It's in that period that BFORD14, which is finally being reissued, first appeared in stores. Intoxicating, bass-heavy and entrancing, the EP's many highlights include the hissing hypnotism of 'Serpentine Tale', the deep bass, melancholic synthesiser chords and crunchy drums of 'Night D3 Died', and the spacey, deep techno warmth of deliciously hazy closing cut 'The Introducer'.

Moment EP (reissue) (12" 再プレス)
Cat: GUDU 001RE. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Starry Night (6:40)
  2. Han Pan (6:42)
Review: Given her runaway success in recent years, it was almost inevitable that Peggy Gou would launch her own record label sooner or later. Wisely, she's chosen to kickstart said imprint - the freshly minted Gudu Records - with her first EP of fresh material for over 12 months. A-side "Starry Night" is an unashamedly positive and life-affirming affair, with Gou placing bouncy piano riffs, sultry South Korean and English vocals and Boyd Jarvis/Paul Simpson style synth-bass atop a snappy, late '80s style house rhythm. There's a similarly retro-futurist feel to the equally loved-up "Han Pan", where Gou's attractive vocals once again catch the ear alongside heavy analogue bass, chiming synth lines and Kwaito influenced drums.

Watergate 27 EP #2
Cat: WGVINYL 78. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Super Flu - "Effreticon" (7:20)
  2. Pablo Fierro - "Reincarnation" (6:37)
  3. Kerri Chandler - "Think Of Something" (Floyd Lavine remix) (7:04)
  4. Manoo - "De's Lullaby" (8:11)
Review: Berlin club Watergate is famous for two things - it's futuristic aesthetic with an LED ceiling adn flashy lighting all through the riverside club, and its mix series The 27th edition was mixed by Hyenah and as ever the label have served up some tasty EPs with tunes taken from it. This is the second one and has four standouts: Floyd Lavine brings some brilliantly afro funk to his house remix of the one and only Kerri Chandler, Super Flu's 'Effreticon' is tense tech house and 'Effreticon' offers more deep, pensive grooves. Manoo rounds out this handy EP on a similar tip.

Nuances De Nuit Vol 3 (Metropolitan Acid mix)
Cat: NUIT 003. Rel: 03 Dec 20
  1. Kolter - "Don't Kill My Groove" (5:25)
  2. T Jacques - "Control" (6:12)
  3. Metro - "Here For The Love" (Metropolitan Acid mix) (8:20)
  4. Vitess - "133cc" (6:20)
Review: Nuances De Nuit Vol 3 is another club ready but stylish EP of all fused house, minimal and techno sounds. Kolter immediately makes you move with 'Don't Kill My Groove', a perfectly fluid and slippery rhythm with warm chord smears and crisp perc. T Jacques then ups the ante with an old school tinged and punchy tech cut, 'Control,' that is awash with sci-fi pads. The Metropolitan Acid mix of 'Here For The Love' is a full flavour jam with diving bass and euphoric keys up top. Vitess closes down with '133cc', a bustling track full of rave energy, knotted synths and big stabs that ride on dusty breaks.

Cat: MULEMUSIQ 265. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Boson (7:26)
  2. Xrain (9:18)
Review: The irrepressible impossible to pin down Mule Musiq label rounds out its 2020 with a stunning two-tracker from Frankey & Sandrino, the Essen and Berlin duo who explore some sublime sonics. 'Boson' is a colourful track with warped synths, treated robot vocals and a plodding groove that draws you in deep. It's peppered with subtle details that make it perfect for the more playful moments, then the flip gets more dark and serious, 'Xrain' is built on a heavy groove, with a lead synth spraying about the mix and constantly hinting at darkness ahead. These are simple but effective tunes from this accomplished outfit.

Cat: THH 002. Rel: 02 Dec 20
  1. Strong Enough (7:14)
  2. Strong Enough (Mall Grab Escape From Goulburn Supermix) (7:21)
Review: Hammer is the partner and blogging friend of Bicep. He's been putting out big, festival pleasing tunes for a hot minute now and finally started his own label as a way to putting out, presumably, even more. This second issue is a big one. 'Store Enough; has funky guitar riffs, rugged synth loops and a drilling baseline all carrying an epic diva vocal. It's heart felt, high impact, but filled with soul. Backing up the epic original is a darker, more trance inducing, warehouse ready and banging Mall Grab Escape From Goulburn Supermix.

  2. Pascale Project - "Fly Zone" (8:10)
  3. Overland - "Are You Done Yet?" (5:46)
  4. Sigsaly - "Carve" (5:41)
Review: D. Tiffany presents the third installment in Planet Euphorique's Tiny Planet series, with four choice cuts. First up are Canadian life collaborators Mutually Feeling (Ariana Molly & Pulsum) with the slo-mo hardcore of 'Gutted Honeydew' accompanied by an evocative vocal. Next up, fellow Montrealer Pascale Project brings the totally loved-up vibe of 'Fly Zone' which also features a talented singer. Things take a much darker turn on the flip, with some of the label boss's cohorts from Vancouver taking charge. First is Jodie Overland with the mental overdrive of 'Are You Done Yet?' followed by local minimal wave/industrial duo Sigsaly going out all guns blazing on the hard dance mayhem of 'Carve'.

  2. Danny Faber - "Hampi" (7:10)
  3. Phonique, Fairplay - "Zatar" (6:45)
  4. Martin Waslewski - "Dimensionen" (6:36)
Review: Berlin's Bar 25 was a real haven in the German party capital. It's reputation lives on strong in the label releases, the latest of which is a celebratory various artist affair. Kiki kicks things off with a heads down tech house stomper that undulates just enough to keep you in the groove.
Danny Faber's 'Hampi' is a headier affair, with suspensory synths keeping you locked on edge and then Phonique and Fairplay link for the more tribal and mysterious sounds of 'Zatar'. Closing out this party-ready EP is Martin Waslewski with the far-gazing chords and twinkling retro future keys of 'Dimensionen.'

Deep Experiments Vol 2 (reissue)
Cat: DNH 015. Rel: 01 Dec 20
  1. Phreaky Phunky (5:18)
  2. Ambiessence (6:40)
Review: Many of Nick Holder's rather good early '90s releases have been changing hands online, so wisely the Canadian has decided to reissue them. Deep Experiments Volume 2 originally dates from 1994 and contains two superb chunks of weighty, danceable deepness. A-side 'Phreaky Phunky' is especially revered, featuring as it does an insanely deep, sub-heavy, dub-style bassline, chunky drums, Korg M-1 organ stabs and some short, glassy-eyed female vocal samples. Flipside 'Ambiessence' is closer in tone and feel the the kind of classic deep house more associated with Larry Heard - think drowsy, ambient style chords, bubbly analogue bass and jazzy drum machine rhythms. A genuine must-have.

Review: Better Listen have had a great year in 2020, with some standout releases from Mint Jams, Sune and Saint Paul & Ethyene. Up next on the Washington D.C. based label is veteran Finnish producer Lauri Saine, hot off some fire releases on Quintessentials, Delusions Of Grandeur and Fina Records with his new one here - the Silver Lining EP. From the low-slung boompty shuffle of 'Jangle', to 'Come Around' where you can hear the drummer get wicked on its sensual late night shuffle and warm lush keys. On the flip, Saine closes it out with the sexy mood music of 'Movin''.

  2. Rossi - "Apathe" (7:54)
  3. Cuartero - "Heavenly" (7:33)
  4. Okain - "Flyaa" (8:36)
Review: Beats bubblier than Babs Windsor, grooves more relentless than Phil Mitchell on a bender, charm like Ian Beale when he's living his best life; Eastenderz have been a consistent source of serious late night deep house delights for six years now. And rather than looking back over past achievements to celebrate the anniversary, they've reached out to some of their most exciting new members. Djebali's Chris Stussy breaks the ice with a timeless Northern Exposure-flavoured progressive breaks style jam before newcomer Dutchman Rossi weaves up some Om-style west coast dreams on 'Apathe'. Flip for a Luke Solomon MFF-era tech house bubbler from Spain's Cuartero before longtime groovesmith Okain makes his Eastenderz debut with the dubbed out Tejada-level hypnosis on 'Flyaa'. Warmer than Frank Butcher's overcoat.

Review: After previous releases from Porter, PVH and Tommy Vicari Jnr, the fourth edition of Welsh imprint Voynich is the Tian Sian EP by ascendant DJ/producer Hendriks Toth. On the A side, the Slovakian serves up the upbeat microhouse of '2040 Jazzin', a deep and trippy joint which will appeal to all the Rominimal fans out there, while on the flip there's some tough tackle for the main room, with the rolling tech house of the title track, as well as 'Let's Go Zer, Bob' equally keeping the afterhours in mind with its lean and subtle groove dynamics. Following up other promising releases on Tehran-based Bandet, AKTA and Heisenberg lately, we think Toth is really going to blow up in 2021.

Review: It's not often you get such a heavyweight selection of long time house greats on one EP, especially as they are all in remixer mode. Scottish producer Vince Watson, now based in the 'Dam, is he man behind the originals, but first to flip is Joe Claussell the dub master who brings real spirituality to his work, In his hands, 'Progress' is a piano laced, deep and sine tingling house love affair, while Yoruba master Osunlade layers in his bright synths and layers of percussion to take you to a higher plane. After Manoo, Poker Flat boss Steve Bug links with longtime collaborator Langenberg for the most tech-edged version.

  1. Just (6:13)
  2. Celeste (6:01)
  3. Back 2 U (Tranz dub) (7:45)
Review: Belfast pair Bicep are smart operators. Having previously doffed a cap to both Italian house and classic New Jersey garage, recent releases have seen them play around with a variety of rhythmic patterns and more advanced musical elements. They're at it again here on their latest outing for Aus. Opener "Just" is pleasingly cheery, with simple but addictive electronic melodies and sweeping chords nestling above a head-nodding, hip-hop influenced groove. "Celeste" is undeniably Balearic, with sun-kissed pianos, dreamy pads and drifting vocal samples stretching out over delay-laden, African-influenced percussion. Finally, they return to their rush-inducing best on "Back 2 U (Tranz Dub)", a loving fusion of vintage progressive house builds, winding melodies and mid '90s beats.

Cat: BM 1. Rel: 30 Nov 20
  1. Rainbows (7:27)
Review: If you're brave enough to put out a one sided, one track 12" you better make sure it's good. Thankfully, Black Motion aka Robert Bongani Mohosana & Thabo Roy Mabogwane do that with 'Rainbow', a tune so lush that it fully deserves being presented in this way. It first came on a digital EP on Defected back in 2017 but sounds just as fresh today: the wavy drums are afro-tinged, pianos lave teasel in their wake and shakers and various other percussive sounds bring the groove to life. Of course, Xoli M's spine tingling vocal is what really brings the whole thing to life.

Review: 1990 blueprint business. Konders' iconic House Rhythms EP enjoys a well overdue reissue on double 12". Four seminal originals, six versions in total: The synth flute flurries and relentless bass on archetypal deep house anthem 'The Poem', the hypnotic near-nine minute transcendence and African roots of 'Massai Women', the instantly distinctive, tightly-coiled 303 of 'Nervous Acid' and the biggest hymn of all 'Let There Be House'... Each of these tracks comprise some of the deepest part of house music's DNA and still sound perfectly relevant and powerful today. House proud.
