  1. The Story Of Her Life
  2. GWRH
  3. Insecurities
  4. Gratitude
  5. Yellow
Review: Having previously only appeared on WotNot Music in the past couple of years, K15 now slides over to Wild Oats to deliver a wholly appropriate slab of fluttering house romanticism rich in Detroit dreams and Chicago cheekiness, wherever the music might have been conceived. The cheekiness is no doubt most noticeable on "GWRH" with its homage to "Gypsy Woman", turning it into a fluttering Latino house jam, but before that comes the plush bump n rub of "The Story Of Her Life". "Insecurities" gets into a sexier kind of deep house funk, which "Gratitude" dutifully carries on until "Yellow" can round the record out with some largely beatless piano business.

Review: What can be said about this CLASSIC slab from Steve Poindexter that hasn't been stated already? Cited by many as one of the most influential Chicago trax there ever was, especially those within Techno circles unsurprisingly, "Computer Madness" set the stage for a new wave of demented club tracks along them like the Gherkin Jerks n aw that. You know the script by now. Originally released on Muzique in 89, and licensed for reissue on the resurrected Dance Mania in 2013, you don't want to miss out on this timely repress of the classic Work That Mutha 12" !

  1. Strange Experience (6:23)

  3. Personal Control (7:19)
  4. Magic Track (6:45)
Review: Berlin producer Luca Cara is Spacetravel and inaugurates Vera and Alexandra's new imprint Melliflow. It's undeniable that Cara references the reductionist analogue funk of classic Perlon or Accelerate on this great release which follows up his brilliant debut for Binh's Time passages last year. On the A side, the funky and bumpin' groove of "Strange Experience" sounds oddly reminiscent of Derrick Carter's Sound Patrol project, while "Ambient Microphones" gets more abstract and minimal: oddly mechanical field recordings face off with blips, bleeps and off kilter drum programming: this one's interesting. On the flip "Magic Trick" is a right deep house party starter which you could imagine Daniel Bell playing on a Sunday afternoon to sleep deprived hedonists.

Review: Apparently, Rene Pawlowitz doesn't already have enough production aliases. Having already released killer material as Shed, Head High, Craft, WK7, The Traveller and War Easy Made (to name a few), he's now adopted another moniker: Zigg Gonzalezz. "High Jackin" sees him expertly doffing a cap to Nuyorican Soul-era Masters At Work and similarly loose-limbed US house from the turn of the millennium, layering sparkling deep house chords and sweaty vocal samples over a bustling, Africanism-style rhythm. "The Kind" explores similarly territory, though it feels a little deeper despite the presence of denser, tribal-influenced rhythms. As for "The Kind (Storm Dub"), it feels like a long lost DJ Duke jam from the tail end of the '90s.

  1. Loose Beat (7:25)
Review: Oliver Dollar - real name Oliver Siebert - has always been open to the idea of collaboration, with previous EPs variously featuring hook-ups with Jesse Rose, Jimi Jules and Chuck Daniels, amongst others. For "Loose Boat", a single-sided missive on Osunlade's Yoruba Soul Records imprint, the Berlin-based producer has joined forces with Crazy P main men Jim Barron and Chris Todd. Seemingly built around delay-laden samples from an old Marvin Gaye cut (but don't quote us on that), the track rolls along on a rich bassline and handclap-driven beats, with dreamy pads and impeccable electric piano solos only adding to the groovy, sun-baked feel.

  2. Funkineven - "SSS" (90s cut) (7:13)
Review: In recent times, Bristol's Shanti Celeste has proved more than adept at blending tough, body-popping electro beats with picturesque electronics and luscious, eyes-closed melodies. She's at it again here, following up two excellent outings on Future Times with the brilliant "SSS". Expect just the right blend of tactile, eyes-closed melodiousness, snappy drum machine work, and a fluid bassline that subtly doffs a cap to Syclops' "Where's Jason's K". Apron boss Funkineven offers his own interpretation on the flip, bringing it closer to early 808 State territory, while adding some neat, boogie-influenced synth touches and saucer-eyed piano flourishes.

Review: Over the last two decades, few minimal house producers have amassed quite as impressive a body of work as Losoul, AKA German veteran Peter Kremeier. His vast discography contains all manner of hypnotic, locked-in classics, not least the trippy and funk-fuelled "Open Door". It was the producer's debut single way back in 1996 (the first of many on legendary imprint Playhouse) and still sounds suitably current all these years on. This reissue replicates the original track list, pairing the tough, loop-propelled disco-house/techno fusion of "Open Door" with the wonkier "00000000", a typically hypnotic and spaced-out affair in which Kremeier contrasts Clavinet and flute style loops with dubbed-out synth hits and a deliciously sparse-but-heavy groove.

Review: While he's previously released a fair number of EPs under a variety of aliases (Deejay Xanax, Dj Wey and Luis included), Brian Pinyero has only one DJ Python release to his name. Dude Compania, his first full-length under any pseudonym, is therefore something of a game-changer. It's rather fine, too, offering a leisurely stroll through attractively intergalactic deep house pastures in the company of tracks built around interesting, off-kilter drum patterns. Highlights are plentiful, from the glacial chords and aqueous melodies of vintage ambient house style shuffler "Todo Era Azul (Siempre Dub)" and atmospheric broken house workout "Acostados" (where field recordings of distant traffic rise above fluttering synthesizer loops and delicately programmed percussion), to the ultra-deep and positive brilliance of closer "Yo Ran (Do)".

Review: Rhythm Plate vet Matt Hunt is back with his Goshawk alias and the snappily titled Double House & Triple Garage EP, kicking off with the warm and steady grooving deep house of "Down In Brooklyn". "Both Sides Buttered" is a cheekier affair that flirts with splashes of sassy organ chords and finger clicks to die for, but things get serious once more with the soul-drenched "88 Keys", which features an undisclosed number of melodic piano and Rhodes parts twirling in bluesy harmony. "I Live For The Love You Give" finishes the EP off with a sharp jack in its step and a heartfelt vocal lift to drill some raw emotion into your no-nonsense heads-down house session.

Review: This vinyl disco/house imprint based in the District of Columbia (USA) bring in French rising star Closed Paradise to inaugurate their new Black Label series. Closed Paradise is an established and well respected producer whose vibe is centered on a solid groove and seamlessly slips between, house, deep disco, soul, lounge and boogie. With releases on labels as diverse as Kolour, Whiskey Disco and Masterworks, he's having a great run. This follows up a nice release on his eponymous imprint that displayed his knack for deeper-tinged sounds - as heard on the sultry and balmy opener "Secrets". A nod to previous disco styled edits on the soul/funk tip can be heard on "Tchin Tchin". On the flip, there's a very Kenny Dixon Jr. influenced vibe on the wicked "Swang It" and he saves the best for last on the emotive and life affirming groove of "Chief" - now that there is real proper deep stuff indeed!

Review: More from Mall Grab, the prolific producer who has become deep house royalty since making his debut back in 2015. As usual, the tracks showcased here are rich in both atmosphere and melodious intent. He begins via the woozy, minor key chords, quietly bustling beats and dreamy sampled vocal loops of peak-time standout "Caught Slippin", before showcasing his love of electro on the tuneful and evocative bubbler "Out of Time". Flip to side B for the jazzy, musically rich deep house bump of "Ahmad" - the kind of track with which he initially made his name - and a dusty, lo-fi, acid-powered remix of the same track from Damiano von Erckert.

Review: A true Chicago treat; Rick Lenoir returns to some of his most seminal cuts from the early 90s with brand new extensions and versions that have never been released before. "Climax" is a blueprint techno jam laced with acid and humanised textures that stimulate in every direction while "Doctor's Housecall" hits with a shuffled jacking funk groove that kicks like Chicago but vibes like Jersey or NYC in spirit. The B-side is all about the breaks as "Your Mind Is So Crazy" shakes up the party with a swollen riff that bounces from side to side before "Retrospace" dusts off the bleep machine for a mischievous rolling frolic in acid. Over 25 years old and still on point.

Review: For over a decade, Eklo head honcho has released on some of the most esteemed minimal house labels such as Minibar, Freak 'N' Chic and Circus Company, in addition to his side project Hold Youth with Le Loup. The Parisian producer has been part of a growing shift in the scene of late, moving from quirky and reductionist micro-house sounds towards classic Detroit aesthetics: and it's these fanciful recreations of classic Detroit sounds on the Acid La Cour EP. Beginning with the Motor City first wave influenced "Sorbet Tamarin", he's then into some deep and dusty 303 business (more suited to the after hours) on "Acid Miami & Les Tantines La Roue". On the flip, the sliver Roland box makes a return on the sublime techno-soul experiment "La Chanson De Gran Mer Kal" reminiscent of early Kenny Larkin or Dan Curtin. Finally on the frantic "Kiltire Beat" we get served to a truly authentic recreation of late '80s hi-tech soul: and it's one hell of a flashback. Tip!

Review: Fresh from outings on Brotherhood Sound System and Bror Records, Genius of Time member Nils Krogh once again dons the Arkajo alias for a third outing on Aniara. He begins with a touch of fluid, late night dancefloor science, where loose hand percussion hits, sampled spoken word vocals and simple, cyclical riffs ride a bouncy groove rich in thickset acid bass. Krogh then delivers something altogether deeper and dreamier - all glassy-eyed chords, echoing vocal samples and unfussy percussion - before stretching a dark, tribal-influenced deep house roller across the entire B-side. While all three tracks are impressive, this is probably our pick of a very good bunch.

Review: Alistair Gibbs takes time out from churning out dancefloor gold on his Friends & Relations imprint to make a welcome return to Heist Recordings. Predictably, he's in fine fettle throughout. Opener "Affirmation" is an almost overwhelmingly positive chunk of loose and baggy disco house that's similar in feel - if not sound - to Tom Trago classic "Use Me Again". "Agilo E Olio", on the other hand, is a much more driving and low-slung affair, with key wickedly rubbery bass, cowbell-heavy percussion and fuzzy Clavinet lines providing heaps of dancefloor energy. Laurence Guy gives that track a warm, woozy and dreamy deep house makeover, before Nebraska rounds things off via the jaunty dub-house-meets-Maurice Fulton brilliance of EP standout "Big Plate Chicken".

Review: Matt Cutler aka Lone has been praised for his classic house perspectives that have earned him releases over the last 10 years on R&S, Werk Discs and of course his own Magicwire imprint. He presents the next installment in !K7's esteemed DJ Kicks series, where he claims to have stepped out of his comfort zone. As a producer, first and foremost, used to programming his own material across several albums, he used the same approach in compiling the material on the mix. The three tracks on offer on this EP are exclusive productions from the Nottingham based DJ - and taken from the mix. The emotive, late-night groove of "Saturday Night" (DJ-Kicks) takes you all the way back to the early 90s of Chicago, while on the flip we get treated to the raw and pulsing lo-fidelity jack of "Arc" and the sublime beatless journey that is "Alpha Wheel 4" (Ambient mix).

  2. African Drug (Joaquin Joe Claussell Hallucination version) (8:19)
Review: Long before the rise in interest in African music, British electronica producer Bob Holyroyd was making tracks rich in traditional instrumentation. "African Drug" is, undoubtedly, the most famous of these. Originally released as a single in 1994, the intensely melodious, Steve Reich-esque work has been remixed numerous times over the years. This latest edition arrives on Joaquin "Joe" Clausell's Sacred Rhythm label, with profits going to charities that work to save Africa's endangered Rhino. The A-side contains a freshly mixed and re-mastered version of Holroyd's brilliant original - which brilliantly increases in intensity with the addition of tribal drums two thirds of the way through - with a more percussive, pleasingly hallucinogenic Clausell remix on the flip. In a word: essential.

Review: Over the years, DK has been responsible for some of Antinote's most ear-pleasing moments. Even so, we can't think of many as breathtaking as "Keyboard Study", the Steve Reich-with-synthesizers track that kicks off Distant Images, his fourth vinyl excursion for Zaltan's lauded imprint. It superbly sets the tone for what follows: a stunning selection of synthesizer-heavy soundscapes variously inspired by American minimalism, Greek new age ambient and Vangelis's widescreen electronic soundtracks. It's the sort of record that sounds like it could have been made in the early '80s and reissued by Music From Memory, only better (and that's saying something).

Review: Doc Daneeka's Walk Man series, launched earlier this year with little fan fare or publicity, has quickly become a reliable source of attractive, sample-heavy club jams. As you'd expect, there's more no-nonsense gold on this fourth volume. "Cloud Break" and "Fly Away" both make merry with chopped and looped samples from classic disco cuts, with the producer underpinning them with bustling new drums that don't strive too hard to beef up already heavy grooves. Closer "Ur Salvation" goes in a slightly different direction, layering filtered string sweeps and dewy-eyed easy listening instrumentation over a bustling, UK-funky influenced drum track. Perhaps the real highlight, though, is sparkling XXXY collaboration "Don't You", a deliciously positive and melodious fusion of dream house textures and cowbell-heavy tropical house beats.

Review: Los Angeles based acid freaks Absurd return with another chapter in their Acid Test series. For their 13th controlled drug trial they have tapped label staples Achterbahn D'Amour - the duo comprised of Edit Piafra and Iron Curtis. This is their seventh release for the label thus far. With this project they express their love for the raw side of Chicago house, techno and EBM but specifically the sounds of the infamous little silver box. There's some deeply aquatic trance induction on offer, with for instance the dynamic opener "Balustrade", while they channel some Donato Dozzy (who has also appeared for the label previously) styled hypnotic techno on the sinister "Dehaveland" which also gets a respectful and more powerful VC-118A remix by the always impressive Samuel Van Dijk. Finally things end on a sublime electro tip with the emotive robotic movements displayed on "Don't Talk To Me".

Review: This expansive double-pack from the consistent Running Back label arrives with no information about the identity of the previously unknown Younger Rebinds. What we can tell you, though, is that it's really rather good. As the title hints, it's something of a retro-futurist treat, with the mystery outfit laying down a range of club-ready jams inspired by the rich history of house music. Highlights include the hands-aloft piano house simplicity of "Hite", the proto-house-meets-acid-house hum of the decidedly druggy and psychedelic "Retro7", the bounding, heavily electronic deep house bounce of "Oorgel" and the pitched-down, saucer-eyed Balearic house bliss of "Moonday". Those who enjoying playing around with percussion should also check the sweaty drum workout that is "7Beat".

Review: Although Satoshi Fumi has been releasing music since the dawn of the millennium, we're not sure he's ever made a better record than this first EP for We Play House. For proof, check A-side "Toriton", a fresh version of a 2016 cut that brilliantly joins the dots between 1990s Japanese deep house don Mr YT, British intelligent techno and the far-sighted sci-fi techno of fellow Tokyo resident Ken Ishii. If that wasn't enough to set the pulse racing, B-side "Lalalalaland", a Balearic-minded, piano-heavy dance through saucer-eyed dream house territory with added sunrise-friendly synthesizers, is arguably even better. In other words, you need this record in your life.

Review: Next up on Sven Vath's powerhouse Cocoon imprint is a double header from two of the biggest names in minimal house. Berlin based David Koch aka DeWalta has for the last 10 years headed up the respected Meander imprint - which has served up releases by the likes of Cristi Cons, Ion ludwig and Hreno in addition to several of his own releases: including last year's brilliant collaboration with the aforementioned Cons. His contribution "Bitter Earth Dub" is a bit more harder edged than his usual work - it's actually more reminiscent of his collaborations with good pal Mike Shannon, but the entrancing bell tones, bumpy bass and delayed claps (all trademarks of his sound) remain. On the flip, British duo Alex & Digby (Flash As A Rat/Hello? Repeat) serve up the lean micro-house groove "Citadel" which is the kind of weirdo trance inducing affair you can expect to hear at a Berlin afterhours party (like at the famed Club der Visionaere) on a Sunday morning.

  2. Lost In Thought (7:37)
  3. Sleepy Hollow (5:29)
Review: Nervmusic is a minimal house/techno imprint formed in Russia but now based in Berlin. Following up some great releases by the likes of French micro-house maestro Lowris and Club Midi (Cluj-Napoca) resident g76, it is now over to the mysterious Fonetica. While not much is known of the producer at the time of writing, be assured there's some quirky and reductionist avant-garde grooves aimed squarely at the after-hours on offer here. Starting off with the lean and glitchy bounce of "Background" - which is perfect for early morning trance induction sessions aboard the Hoppetosse, we've also got the trippy and rolling bass driven groove of "Lost In Thought" for something more upbeat. Finally on the flip is yet more subtractive hypnotism on "Sleepy Hollow" which will appeal to fans of grooves from the quirker end of the spectrum popularised by the likes of Perlon, Minibar or Hello? Repeat.

Review: Hot on the heels of his "Love Shy" EP comes another touching deep house escape from Adelaide-based Subjoi. "Flashing Lights" takes the lead with a divine sample that warps and lilts softly but persistently as the beats gradually increase insistency. Elsewhere "Glowworm" lives up to its name with its broken drum rolls and soft introspective groove, "Closer" plays the consummate cosmic warm-up groove while "Dash" races to the finish line with a thumping sense of triumph aided and abetted by some tasteful flute work. Joious.

Review: Here is the alter ego of Millionhands big cheese Tom Mangan. As Tee Mango he has had releases with Will Saul (and released on his Aus Music imprint earlier this year) and he's next up on Mad Mats & Tooli's Local Talk imprint. There's some splendid expressions in nu-jazz deepness on offer on the Dadhouse EP. Beginning with the emotive and chill groove of "Don't Worry Everything's Going To Be Alright" with some mad syncopated rhythms: hear the drummer get wicked! "Trying Times" is smooth and jazzy deep house reminiscent of classic Nick Holder with its smoky Rhodes. dusty rhythms and sexy soul vocals. On the flip, the reduced tribal-dub-DJ tool "The Rhythm" (Drums 3) was particularly impressive and reminded us of Kerri Chandler's more esoteric moments. Finally "Your Love" ends this fine EP on a bittersweet note on this Arthur Russell style jam.

  1. Sahau - "As It Was" (15:57)
  2. AK41 - "The Man Who Wasn't There" (12:25)
Review: Romanian imprint Zimbru could hardly be described as prolific. In fact, this 12" is the label's third outing in three years. Fittingly, it features a track each from the two artists who graced their first two EPs. Sahau handles the A-side, laying down an undeniably epic, late night excursion that sits somewhere between the distinctive minimal techno swing of Ricardo Villalobos and spacey, ultra-deep house. Like the best Villalobos productions, it subtly ebbs and flows for 16 mesmerizing minutes. Over on the flipside Dan Andrei and Seban Goanta once again join forces as AK41, celebrating "The Man Who Wasn't There" via twittering birdsong, deep and rolling bass, ricocheting electronic riffs and impressively programmed percussion.

Review: Earlier in 2017, Russian producer, DJ and live musician Kito Jempere returned with his second album for Italian label Hell Yeah. Jempere plays live as the Kito Jempere Band, where he calls upon his bandmates for their many skills to lend the album a richly musical feel. Mixed and co-produced by band member Roman Urazov, the album featured Artemiy Gunbin aka Noteless on vocals, as well as drummer Ruslan Gadzhimuradov, Matvey Averin on bass and finally Sergey Lipsky - who plays guitar and is also half of Simple Symmetry. We now get treated to a series of brilliant remixes on this EP. Power duo Lauer and Fabrizio Mammarella aka Black Spuma deliver a typically neon-lit and retro makeover of "Ampa" (Black Spuma Energy Thieves vocal mix) and it's full of classic beatboxes, shimmering vintage synth arpeggios and a classic sense of swing. Russian producer Lipelis' remix of "Lifetime Theme" (Lipelis Kebab House remix) takes you deep into the exotic (with a pinch of acid) and Melbournian in Berlin Bell Towers delivers a balearic tinged rendition of the track too, that his earned him releases on Public Possession and Stamp The Wax.
