Yossi Amoyal Presents Fluere IV
  1. A1 People - "Do It" (Metamatics remix)
  2. Kosmogonik - "Circuitry"
  3. Silicon Scally - "Relay"
  4. Matt Chester - "November Pathways"
  5. CiM - "Recursive"
Review: Since Zip and Villalobos made it one of their coveted deep digs to be heard pealing out of a thousand after hours sessions, the Metamatics remix of A1 People has been a teasingly out of reach dream grab for many a minimal electro head. Now Yossi Amoyal has done the good deed of getting the track remastered and repressed as part of his Fluere series toasting 15 years of Sushitech. As well as that masterclass of elegant machine funk, there's also Kosmogonik's mind-bendingly brilliant 'Circuitry', Silicon Scally's body-popping electro-noir 'Relay' and Matt Chester's melancholic 'November Pathways' to keep your up-all-night marathon sets peppered with spangled surprises.

  2. Touch It (7:01)
  3. Cop Porn & Pop Corn (5:44)
  4. We Shall Not Surrender (7:15)
Review: Stirring sounds from Marc Leclair as he reminds us what we're all fighting for right now with 'We Will Not Surrender.' The battle kicks off with his signature bounce and jazzy flurries on 'Crackerz & PBJ', the type of dynamite that would kick right off the middle of a Derrick Carter set. It's back by plenty more firepower; the springy disco glitches and waves of 'Touch It', the supreme boogie of the deliciously titled 'Cop Porn & Pop Corn' and the almighty climax that is the title track; big pianos, emotions and pure euphoria... That's what we're fighting for. Viability never sounded so sweet.

Review: Friends of Amphia since their 'Dimensions' EP, Romanian live production outfit return to the label for their third release in as many years. As always with Amorf, the settings are freeform and the direction can go anywhere. 'Glass' is as shiny and clean as its name suggests with touches of Dubnobasswithmyheadman-era Underworld and a lovely jazzy touch. 'Shattered' is a much heartier style of jazz; big swinging breaks and florid synth blasts that's aren't dissimilar to 'Bug In A Bass Bin'. Hot tip.

  1. Down That Road (6:45)
  2. Down That Road (Apiento & Tepper dubbed It) (6:59)
  3. Down That Road (Padapella) (6:02)
Review: Apiento is back on World Building with another excellently soul infused deep house gem that builds on the much loved "Things You Do For Love" 7". Subtle acid flecked bassline snakes in and out of the crisp drums as buttery smooth, heartbroken lyrics up top get you where it hurts. It's hugely sophisticated and absorbingly understated. Apiento & Tepper's dubbed out version recalls the early work of the one and only Larry Heard before a beatless Padapella closes things out for those who want to really make a dramatic emotional statement pre, mid or post-set.

  3. Horse Meat Disco & Kathy Sledge - "Jump Into The Light" (Aeroplane remix) (4:47)
  4. Sticks & Stonez & Liv East - "You're My" (12" edit) (5:43)
Review: Defected's Glitterbox off shoot is all about those classic cosmic sounds and OG disco deliciousness. The third volume of veritable Glitterbox Jams is another dazzling one with Melvo Baptiste opening up on a nice smoochy and smooth groove with sleek bass and vocals that immediately pull you in. Yusek then steps up with a remix that is more about dance floor heat, with ducking and diving bass and bigger everything - claps, vocals and stabs. Aeroplane then pull back to a slinky, cheeky vibe with catchy hooks and last of all is Sticks & Stonez & Liv East, a dreamy tune with a balmy mood.

  4. The Life (7:01)
Review: The Fuse crew's Locus imprint strikes wax again with three head twisting grooves from Tel Aviv's Stephan Bazbaz and a peppy remix from Locus regular Casey Spillman. Fresh from his Djebali collaboration and 'Fraires' EP on Infuse earlier this year, Bazbaz returns with 'Voyage'. '300' buckles us up and lifts us off. Bare bones ingredients with a full fat flavour, this has Craig Richards, 7am, all over it while 'Key To Success' is a much more pumping techno affair. Finally 'The Life' brings us to a hazy, euphoric close. Mild shades of trance and acid punctuating an otherwise soft-focus mix, it's a smooth end to a pleasantly turbulent journey. Bon 'Voyage'.

Review: Bella Boo's debut EP on Running Back is a fantastic statement of her style. The Studio Barnhus associate has a refined take on house that is genial and melodic and of course for anyone associated with that crew, playful and with a great sense of its own character. This EP was meant to be a full length with features and collaborations by COVID-19 put paid to that so instead we get a rich eight tracker. Dreamy deep house, skeletal jungle rhythms, funky drum patterns and balmy late night lullabies all make this as varied and vital an EP as you could wish for.

Cat: ASTRO LTD3. Rel: 14 Dec 20
  1. Nigel Hayes & Rachel Berg - "Take me to the sea (John Beltran mix)" (4:53)
  2. C-Pull - "Soulmate (John Beltran remix)" (6:10)
  3. John Beltran - "Summer Storm (Nigel Hayes remix)" (6:56)
Review: The pointedly deep Astrolife label, run by Nigel Hayes and Vincent Inc, is taking things way, way down with this stunning 12" from John Beltran. It's a varied affair that leads in with the sumptuous, percussive house pattering of Beltran's remix of Hayes and Rachel Berg's 'Take Me To The Sea'. It's the kind of track that will transport you to dreamy, sun-soaked terraces in a flash. Beltran's version of C-Pull's 'Soulmate' is a very different affair - a peppy broken beat groover that wouldn't sound out of place being worked by the likes of Kaidi Thatham or Dego. Then Hayes is back, this time remixing Beltran's 'Summer Storm' and giving it a chunky rhythm section to carry the hazy melodics into peak time.

Review:
One of the Motor City's hardest working producers is back! 7 Days Entertainment chief Big Strick presents Paper Chase, a four track EP featuring the sort of emotive, real proper deep house jams you have come to know and love from the man. From the glassy-eyed and bittersweet inner city soul of 'Detroit Domino', to the introspective 'Still Hustlin' and its rich tapestry of twisted analogue synth textures, and ending with what was undoubtedly the most surprising addition to the EP in the form of 'Deep Don't Die' - a droning and mentalist techno journey that would make even Mike Parker stand up and notice.

  3. Ich Liebe Dich (7:57)
Review: After a long delay due to the closing of their pressing plant and the mastering studio due to COVID -19, Crisp finally gets this one out. 'Beat Box' is perfectly stripped back techno that does a lot with a little. A wobbling synth line brings the character to the flat footed drums. Glitchy effects and water droplets are the only other real accompaniment but still you will dance. The Revolutionary mix is a little more elastic. Vocals bring some attitude and slapping hits drive it along. On the flip, the strobe lit 'Ich Liebe Dich' is a playful, rhythmic, broken up tune to get a late night crowd screaming for more.

  1. Design Of A Body Sublime (feat Fox) (6:08)
  2. Design Of An Eye Sublime (feat Fox) (5:52)
  3. Design Of A Lost Sublime (8:07)
Review: Given that both Call Super and Parris have fine track records and have successfully developed their own unique, off-kilter trademarks sounds, you'd expect this first collaborative EP to not only be very good, but also sidestep rhythmic and stylistic conventions. The suite of tracks certainly ticks those boxes, with opener 'Design of a Body Sublime', the first of two tracks featuring vocalist Fox, somehow managing to brilliant fuse elements of broken techno, vintage US garage, Afro-house and UK bass. The track's New Jersey garage influences come further to the fore on the similarly rhythmically off-kilter 'Design of an Eye Sublime', while closing cut 'Design of a Lost Sublime' is a more glitchy, tech-house influenced number rich in curious instrumental samples, 4/4 techno drums and wayward electronic sounds.

  7. Adam Pits - "Wind Tunnel" (5:07)
  8. DJ Sports - "Needs Dub" (4:11)
Review: Needs' commendable charity drive continues to bring forth the goods, both in terms of good causes and world class club music. Rallying round in support of World Mental Health Day 2020, Shanti Celeste kicks the record off in style with the rapid fire, deep-diving workout 'Fantasma'. OCB keeps the pressure up with the psychotropic techno of 'RS3', while Michelle works up some delightfully freaky synths on playful jacker 'Aesthetic'. Bobby's 'Free Your Mind' is a 90s-tinged, full fat techno production indebted to Detroit, Peder Mannerfelt keeps things stripped and raw on 'Our Levels' and Yu Su weaves a beautiful tapestry of interweaving rhythms on 'Brittney'. Adam Pits' trippy techno sounds resplendent on 'Wind Tunnel' and DJ Sports completes the set with the inventive, dembow slanted funk of 'Needs Dub'.

  1. Climax 1 (6:16)
  2. Climax 2 (6:19)
  3. Track 1 (6:57)
  4. Track 2 (5:52)
Review: Kerri Chandler has made a lot of terrific records over the years, but few are better than 1993's "Atmosphere EP", which in our opinion contains some of the most on-point "garage-house" (as it would have been called then) ever made. This yellow vinyl reissue proves our point: you'll struggle to find a more infectious fusion of New Jersey organ stabs, sparkling piano riffs and bumpin' club grooves than "Climax 1", or the tougher dub mix "Climax 2" for that matter (a revision made all the more alluring by Chandler's use of heady African vocal samples). The goodness continues on the flip, where the jazzy and immersive deep house warmth of "Track 1" is quickly followed by the Larry Heard-inspired brilliance of "Track 2" - a kind of tribute to "Can You Feel It" that features some dizzying piano solos from the hugely talented Chandler. In a word: essential.

  2. Sten - "Circles"
  3. Mark Broom - "Gira"
  4. Edward - "Sender"
Review: The second instalment in Yossi Amoyal's Fluere compilation run brings further leftfield house and techno delights into one place, in honour of Sushitech's 15th anniversary. First up on this 12" is Baby Ford's impeccable remix of Jin Choi, which adds extra layers of drama to Ford's trademark minimal clicks and pops. Sten's 'Circles' is a pristine, dubby tech house workout, while Mark Broom's 'Gira' sounds all the better for a modern remaster 25 years after its original release. Edward's 'Sender' finishes the record off on a nervy, unsettled note where lingering off-key tones hover over a dense and twitchy minimal beat.

Review: This week we have some new wax from Plastik People Recordings. The Albuquerque, New Mexico based operation presents the Locked In EP. On the A side you're in good hands with label head honcho Marc Cotterell who gives you two expressions in classic house music in the form of 'The Way You Hold Me' and the timeless 'Ease Your Mind' complete with swung beats and roaring diva vocals. They tapped legendary Sheffield producer Gavin Dista for a couple of previously unreleased exclusives on side B. Dista serves up a true zeitgeist of the mid '90s on the uplifting garage of 'Fantasy' followed by the absolutely euphoric vocal house anthem 'Funk House'.

  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet" (7:26)
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface" (6:23)
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit" (5:56)
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

Review: Back in the late 90s, first time tech house was still booming, and Nathan Coles and Terry Francis were right at the heart father sound's best material. Some of it came as The Delinquents, who now get proper and worthy reissue treatment thanks to the always vital Mint Condition label. Their Room on Top EP from 1998 showcased the best of their sound - there's the dark and driving "Room On Top", then the more tripped put and late night "Fares Please". "All Change" gets back to bouncing, punchy drum led business and "Hold Tight" offers a perfectly gooey and woozy downtempo track to get things started or end them in stylish fashion.

  1. Reckless Eyes (6:56)
Review: The Digwah label deals in tech-house reworks of well-loved old cuts and the results are always well on point. They don't come on a regal basis but when they do they are well worth snapping up - and often sell out in quick fashion. The subject of this latest one is the one and only Sade, whose buttery vocals get layered into a nice deep, propulsive house grove that comes with none hues and last night chord work to sooth any floor. Yet again this is another essential 12" from this label, and as ever it's hand stamped one sided affair.

  2. Heritage - "Dial Up" (4:27)
Review: Plastik People bring some more garage heat to their Ltd sublabel with the outstanding double hit of DJ Deller and Heritage. Deller is in control on the A side with the rolling breakstep funk of 'Nobody Does It Better', maximising on a soulful male vocal, killer hats and a Lately bassline to die for. On the flip, Heritage is a rougher affair that breaks the beat up and goes in hard on the wobbly subs, keeping things sparse and deadly for a surefire club weapon. It's a perfect foil to the upfront soul vibes of the A side, making this an incredibly useful record to pack for two vastly different reasons.

Review: The Mysticisms label continues to explore trippy corners of 4/4 club music where the jack of old meets the broader horizons of the modern age in superlative fashion. DJ Hedonist appears to be a new name on the scene, but they step out best foot forward with the bleep-tinted jacker '#1'. '#2' gets into a grainy, lo-fi house mood thanks to some seriously scuffed drums and a gnarly chord, while '#7' heads into electro-techno territory with nagging programming and a peppy tempo carrying some delightfully alien sonics pitched at the freakier end of the floor. '#6' completes the set with a bass-tilted workout for those who like their parties ghoulish and grungy.

Review: Berlin-based imprint Rumenigge return with more abstract and ominous expressions in minimal techno on this various artists EP. On side A we have Dubfound, a Moldova based producer and DJ who heads up the labels Swoon, Nurum and Zimotik. His contribution on Trident Vol. 3 is 'PDLK', a deep and woozy number on the tribal side, which is perfect for getting weird at the afterhours. Even more Sunday morning styled tackle awaits you on side B, with the very disorienting groove paranoia of Amin Ravelle's 'Ladarto' where the Barcelona-based producer serves up something you would expect to hear during one of Rhadoo's infamous Monday morning sets at Hoppetosse. Closing it out is Dorothy's Dream with the funked up Sunwaves breaks of 'C'Hai Creduto Eh?'.

Review: 'Love Can't Turn Around' is one of the most enduring and pioneering hits in house music. It's an unabashed anthem with impassioned lyrics that drip with covert sexuality thanks to the forceful delivery of Darryl Pandy. His passion is offset by the sweetness of the backing singers, while crashing hits, big stabs and horn leads all power it along and cannot fail to get you in a sweat. Here it comes in all its definitive forms allowing you to serve it up however you see fit. Whichever version you chose, damage will ensue when you drop this one.

Review: A taster for Robert Hood's second Floorplan album, this EP puts a spotlight on the radical nature of his musical transformation. On "Music", the visceral rhythms of techno minimalism are gone; in their place is a rolling, tracky groove that boasts a repetitive vocal loop and which has shades of classic Relief /Derrick Carter. "Tell You No Lie" is even more impressive. It sees Hood use a gospel vocal over a stomping, funk guitar-sampling disco house workout. There is an audibly religious dimension to "Tell You No Lie," but Hood's knack for writing a great tune means that it sounds celebratory rather than self-indulgent or preachy.

Review: Fred Everything is a long assured producer and a hallmark of real quality grooves. The Atjazz Record Company is similarly highly regarded, and for good reason, so this is a coming together well worthy of your attention. Opener 'Alone' is the sort of gorgeously lush and languid deep house groove that is perfect for cosy spaces. 'Phoenix' then ups the ante with delightfully skipping beats and perc, smeared pads and a cuddly vibe. 'Alone' then gets two remixes and the first, Po-lar-i-ty, is riddled with funky motifs and jazz keys and the second is a loopy tool of dusty beats.

  2. Mathew Jonson - "Freedom Engine"
  3. Brawther - "Serpent"
  4. Benjamin Brunn - "A Rivulet In Paradise"
  5. GES - "Helmut Schmidt Plays Darius Milhaud"
Review: Sushitech's anniversary celebrations are centring around label boss Yossi Amoyal's impeccably curated compilation Fluere. Across a series of 12"s, Amoyal taps up big hitters and deep cover reaches alike to present something of a summation of the inspiration behind his fantastic label's sound. On here you get Jan Jelinek's experimental excursions as GES, Mathew Jonson's evergreen 'Freedom Engine', dynamic tech house from Brawther and shimmering beatless pulses from Benjamin Brunn. It's a unique approach that juxtaposes club tracks and experimental fare in an interesting way, and the quality remains infallibly high throughout.

Review: After a strong 2020 on labels such as The Other Side, Pleasure Zone and Damn!, Romanian artists Guy From Downstairs serves up his debut studio album Oceanic. Every bit as deep, wavey, and full of hidden secrets, across the two 12"s we're treated to tidal wave of soaking wet grooves. Highlights include the slippery filters worming their way all over 'Low Life Low Bass', the depth plunge bass/kick hits and soft harmonic ebbs and flows of 'AMC' and the gentle rolls and pushes of the 10 minute delight that is the title track. Take a deep dive today.

  3. Distant (5:04)
  4. Slam Deep (6:14)
  5. Channel & Transmission (2:00)
Review: For his first outing of 2020, Kyle Hall returns to the label he founded last year, Forget The Clock, with a suitably strong five-track missive. Check first languid opener "Shark", a splash around in crystal clear waters where simmering chords, luscious pads and glassy-eyed melodic motifs stretch out over bubbly, Latin-tinged drum machine beats and a dubby bassline. Hall makes bolder strides towards the dancefloor on lo-fi house cut "Vexed", before doffing a cap to Larry Heard and Ron Trent on the gorgeous deep house positivity of "Distant". Elsewhere, "Slam Deep" joins the dots between Steve Poindexter and the 2000 Black style of jazzy broken beat, while "Channel & Transmission" is a skewed skip through wonky deep house/jazz-funk fusion.
