Review: Club of Jacks
RAW 3 EP

Club of Jacks come correct with the third and final installment of their RAW EP series - serving up another vinyl 4 tracker of essential House & Garage grooves primed for the dancefloor.

Track 1 'Memories' opens the EP with creamy Rhodes pads leading into a pulsing deep house groove flecked with soulful vocal lines, jazzy piano arps and filtered sax riffs.

The second track 'All I Think About' is a soulful groove built around an emotive vocal hook and chugging analog pads for that end of the night vibe.

On the flip side, 'Pressure Sound' switches style to a bassline roller with vintage reggae vocals, swinging garage drums and dub fx combining into a bouncy party starter.

Finishing off the EP is 'Bug-a-Do', a tough and bumpy hybrid acid-garage-house banger. Filtered synth pads merge with a 303 and M1 piano line - a hands in the air new school / old school workout.

All tracks are produced and mixed by Club of Jacks and made to be played loud wherever you like to jack your body!

  3. Remember Me (7:02)
Review: 23 years have passed since Blue Boy (AKA Scottish producer Lex Blackmore) delivered one of the biggest club and radio hits of summer 1997, the Marlena Shaw-sampling "Remember Me". Here the familiar favourite is given a new lease of life via a pair of fresh 2020 re-rubs. David Penn steps up first, expertly layering sustained Wurlitzer organ chords, gospel-style, clipped disco guitars, piano riffs and the famous vocal sample over a thickset, 21st century house groove. Frank Rizaro's remix is even heavier, with Shaw's vocalizations riding a beat that's closer to tribal techno than deep house. The head-nodding, toe-tapping original 1997 mix completes a rock-solid package.

Review: Milan based Take It Easy label and party is back. This third drop comes from label owners, Bugsy and DJLMP with the addition of the historical italian dj and Paradise Pizza's label owner Memoryman aka Uovo. After their big success "Watchin Out" and "Catch Me", The EP opens with an Afro-influeced sample stomper followed up by an afrobeat vocal tool by DJLMP. "I Wonder" open the B side with some crackly Detroit atmosphere by Memoryman aka Uovo. "Pomiri Dan" completes the set, percussive sample stomper by Bugsy on his first appearance on the label.

  2. Wish I Didn't Miss You (Hex Hector remix) (4:19)
Review: Juno exclusive white vinyl repress.....Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. Here pressed up on a limited white vinyl reissue of just 150 units on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

  1. Carlo Gambino - "She Can't Love You"
  2. Lee Onel - "Pepon"
  3. Julenn - "Long Shot"
  4. Legit Trip - "Brat"
Review: 4 fresh tracks from 4 great producers. First is Carl Gambino (She Can't Love You), test driven at DC10 and parties like S.A.S.H. in Australia. A beautiful House track full of warmth, swing & groove with subtle vocals throughout. A2 on the A side is Lee Onel from Fuerteventura with Pepon, driven by its baseline, skippy percussion and in true Lee Onel style, a long breakdown arranged perfectly to jump start the crowd. With heavy early support on Ibiza Global Radio and the islands dance floors, its more than made its mark. B1 The label welcomes back Julenn with Long Shot. Another great slice of House music led by its strong kick, light hats and dirty baseline. B2 The unstoppable Russian, Legit Trip is back on the label with Brat, a pure groove leading into a straight up breakdown before catching the groove again right to the end.

Review: While Gianmarco Orsini is already well established as a producer thanks to solo releases on Elephant Moon and Partisan, fellow Italian Jacopo Latini is still in the process of making his name. This collaboration with Orsini as Data Memory Access - their first joint effort - should help raise his profile further. There's plenty to get the blood pumping throughout, from the throbbing, warehouse-ready retro-futurism of "Experience" - where angular acid lines and dreamy chords ride a '90s style Euro-house bassline - and the chunky acid house/tech-house fusion of "Acid In My Mind", to the drowsy electric piano chords, bustling breakbeats and bleeping deep house melodies of "Technology".

Nuits Sonores (limited 12" 再プレス)
Cat: EGLO 041. Rel: 08 Jul 20
  1. Nuits Sonores (11:57)
  2. Nectarines (6:21)
Review: Sam Shepherd has long been a master of the kind of ultra-deep, rolling, soft focus deep house that raises the spirits and soothes the soul. Even so, there's something incredibly special about "Nuits Sonores", the lead track from this must-have EP. Based around a deep, tactile groove and blessed with rising synth solos, dancing acid lines and his usual fireside Rhodes antics, the track rises magnificently for 12 spellbinding minutes. As it progresses, further elements make their way into the mix, until it reaches the kind of organic deep house climax that makes even the grumpiest souls go weak at the knees. Flip for "Nectarines", the kind of loose-limbed fusion of deep house sassiness, Detroit techno electronics and fluid jazz drumming at which Shepherd has always excelled.

Pimp Life EP (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Late Night Cruising (5:59)
  2. Just A Man (6:24)
  3. Bring It Home (5:24)
  4. Chicago Lights (5:28)
Review: Soul Central responsible for the anthemic house version of 'Strings of Life' needs no introduction. Their latest Pimp Life EP is a limited edition four-track vinyl that fluidly introduces the Electric Shrine imprint. The EP features a mix of gritty, jazzy, soulful and funk-filled cuts that are interplayed with raw interviews from behind bars. Soul Central keeps it deep and sleazy whilst delivering the real deal. 'Late Night Cruising' chronicles the journey of a Bluesman, departing with the funkiest of grooves and solid sub-bass becoming the final destination.
'Just A Man' embeds the confessions from a convicted pimp dispersed with classic keys and dripped in Soul. Turning in a modern take on the deeper side of Disco. 'Bring It Home' is haze fuelled & reminiscent of the early US House scene. 'Chicago Lights' fuses 4/4, low slung Funk driven by a deeper dub vehicle.

There's a timeless quality to this stuff, whether it's the late-night swirl of "Sacrement" or the choppy, quirked-up groove of "Every Kind Of People With Any Kind Of Soul". 4. It All Began In The East (The Cosmic Arts Meditational mix) (3:18)
Review: Two years ago, Joaquin "Joe" Clausell donned his occasional Mental Remedy alias and offered up "A Journey To Noi", a decidedly spiritual album that mixed Japanese instrumentation with his usual ambient and deep house sounds. On this 12", Clausell offers up some heady new interpretations that - like much of his work over the last decade - are built around the percussive power of African rhythms. The opening "Sacred Rhythm Version" of "It All Began In The East" is particularly potent, with Clausell cloaking a warm, organic and percussive Afro-house beat in distinctive Japanese Koto melodies and jazzy piano flourishes. We'd also recommend the formidably heavy, drum-laden rework of "Dance For Gratitude", whose Latin American bassline and simmering synth-strings are almost as addictive as the weighty groove they sit upon.

Review: A couple of months after inaugurating the Outban imprint with a vibrant EP of mind-altering retro-futurism, Bakked returns with a speedy sequel. He first joins the dots between early '90s bleep techno and purist tech-house ("433"), before opting for a deeper and more ghostly take on the same bleeping futurism on "4111". "399" sees him switch tack and offer-up a breakbeat-powered romp laden with warehouse-ready riffs and New Jersey organ licks, while "444" adds sunrise-ready dreaminess to a vintage Detroit techno inspired rhythm track. Arguably best of all though is closing cut "Pullupthetune", a deliciously intergalactic tribute to the more spacey end of mid-'90s drum & bass.

  4. Through The Walls (Jt Donaldson remix) (7:45)
Review: With wind in his sails following a surprise outing on Djebali, Nik Prunk returns to the good ship PIV Limited and sets a course for peak-time tech-house dancefloors. It's plain sailing from the off, with ear-catching opener "Office Gossip" cannily joining the dots between warm, bass-heavy West Coast dub house and the kind of future-focused tech-house hedonism that was once all the rage at pioneering UK club Wiggle. The attractively toasty retro-futurism continues on "Through The Walls", a soul-flecked vocal number that adds a little percussive crunch to a San Francisco style deep house cut. Scene stalwart JT Donaldson delivers a superb remix of that cut focused on jazz-funk bass, spacey chords and pitched-up drums, while "Femme" is the kind of groovy, bumpin' and Rhodes-laden deep house jam that Dubtribe Soundsystem used to knock out in their sleep. In a word: essential.

  4. Kelime Iki (7:03)
Review: Those stylish minimalists at Meander are back with more of their superbly stripped down sounds. At the helm for this latest trip is Alci, who brings the clipped electronic funk to his opener "Can't Dance" which will surely have many people trying to prove they don't suffer from the same issue. "Sonsuz Seconds" is more airy and deft, with incidental chords floating above a rugged drum line that is nice and rickety. "Kelime Bir" gets into melon twisting late night territory with its bendy tones and freaky pads, then "Kelime Iki" almost falls over itself its drums areas quick and kinetic. Fantastic stuff once more from this label.

Review: Bolla's Afrikan Basement debuted with a warm welcome in 2008 as a limited 7" and is one of the many essential projects Joe Clasusell has been involved with over the years. Now it gets revisited on this tasty 7". The a-side is a special edit of "Makkusa", a steamy, spiritual, deeply layered and emotional house track that is lead by a standout sax line. Joaquin's Sacred Rhythm dub is just that on the flip-side, a punchy rework with groaning vocals and a tribal feel, marching drums and plenty of the steam and sweat that makes his music so unique and powerful.

  2. Felipe Gordon & Kear - "Son Esquivias" (7:00)
Review: The insatiable rise of Felipe Gordon continues apace. The Colombian has been in a rich vein of form over the last 18 months, chalking up must-check EPs on Quintessentials, Toy Tonics, Lost Palms, and Razor 'N' Tape Reserve. Here he adds another label to his discography: celebrated Swedish house outlet Local Talk. Title track "For A Bright & Acid Future" hits the spot from the word go, with Gordon wrapping twisted, rough-neck acid lines around a bustling backing track rich in fuzzy synth stabs, jazzy bass guitar and crunchy beats. Over on the flip Kear lends a hand on the sun-kissed, soft focus brilliance of jazz-funk/Jazz/deep Latin house fusion of "Son Esquivias", a slab of breezy, percussion-rich goodness that could well be Gordon's most musically expansive track to date.

Review: Ilija Rudman and Antonio Zuza's consistently classy label is back with a standout 12" from Californian producer Michoacan, who's previously been spotted on DFA, Eskimo and many other highly regarded labels. "Knights Are Cold" is a vibrant, original and delightfully kinked slab of sunshine with a subtle pitch-bent oddness and an innate funkiness. It's smart in its reference points, but certainly not trying to be a simple 80s disco pastiche. "Be Side Me" is a slower, moodier affair but the same melodic sensibilities shine through to make this a rich selection for DJs wanting grooves with personality and attitude to spare.

Their comeback EP on Spinning Plates was well-received, and this speedy follow-up on Domesticated is likely to be greeted by a similar level of praise. There's certainly plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the swinging, bass-heavy shuffle of "Everybody Just", where glitchy electronics and ghostly chords ride a thickset tech-house groove, to the crunchy, stargazing electro bounce of closing cut "Body Movement". Sandwiched in between you'll find the warm, spaced-out haziness of "Jumpin' Jack Flash", and "Trenor", a slightly pitched-down tech-house box-jam for those who like to get busy in the mix.

Review: Butch has been turning out essential club sounds for many years. He has a wide range of styles in his arsenal and always manages to come up with original ideas despite being so prolific for so long. "Joe Le Taxi" is a mad acid cut that has off-grid claps, drunken kicks and a female vocal lost in it all. It's the sort of unhinged tune to drop at the peak of the night and watch the reaction from afar. On the flip is an Acid Tool version that is even more wonky and unhinged, with the squirrelling acid line doing even more work.

Review: Tech-house is one of those genres that has been pulled in multiple different directions of late, with producers peppering typically glitchy, bass-heavy grooves with all manner of alien-sounding or pleasantly attractive musical elements. There's plenty of that kind of subtle eclecticism on Niko Maxen's latest EP, with the prolific producer bouncing between acid-fired tech-house funk (striking opener "Twist"), imaginative re-inventions of UK Bleep & Bass for the tech-house generation ("Bleep Test"), quirky, vocal-laden, Villalobos-influenced dancefloor eccentricity (the ace "Minimal Minds") and wonky, sample-heavy early morning jazziness (the hard to pigeonhole but undeniably impressive "Strung Out").

She's carrying that through to her appearance on Pressure Traxx, while clearly nodding to her roots in the minimal scene with the elegant, spellbinding "Strong Sense", all underpinned by her subdued vocal. 4. Round The World (5:35)
  5. Magic Flute (5:56)
Review: Italian scene veteran DJ Soch has been serving up classy, mature and musically rich house music for longer than many of us have been alive, so it's great to see him showcase his wares on Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing amongst the five tracks on show, from the effortless warmth of title track "The Power of Poetry" - a glorious fusion of Nu Groove era Burrell Brothers style deep house and sun-kissed Italian dreaminess - to the chunky, bass-heavy bounce of New Jersey garage-influenced closing cut "Magic Flute". Other highlights include "Underground Night", where slick, vibraphone style solos and twinkling pianos ride another thickset late '80s deep house groove, and the luscious Italian dream house revivalism of "Round The World".

  1. I Know You (7:20)
  2. Badmanthing (6:53)
  3. Plastik Haus (5:56)
  4. No Fear (6:16)
Review: Whether they're operating on Toy Tonics, Freerange, Madhouse or NeoVinyl, Black Loops rarely fail to deliver the deep house goods. Predictably, the Italian duo's Shall Not Fade label debut is another quality collection of cuts. Our pick of a very strong bunch is probably "Badmanthing", a quirky chunk of rubbery deep house-funk built around a bold, memorable bassline, eccentric electronics and tipsy chords, though the skipping drums, meaty bass and tweaked New Jersey garage motifs of "Plastikhaus" are also hugely alluring. Elsewhere, "No Fear" is a notable fusion of bounding house beats, darting jazz-funk synth sounds and simmering synth-strings, while EP opener "I Know You" is a more classic-sounding slab of deep house cheeriness.

Tormento Bridge EP (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: BBM 002. Rel: 06 Jul 20
  1. Tormento (7:25)
  2. Como Los Trileros (6:38)
  3. Sandpaper & Velvet (7:39)
  4. Old Birds (7:24)
Review: Juliche Hernandez is the young Canarian owner of Downhill Music, with releases on ViVA Music, PIV, Decay and MadTech. His very deep and dark style of sound is right at home on Brooklyn Bridge Music Company, who present his 'Tormento Bridge' EP of last year which has been recently repressed due to high demand. Tough rolling and dubby tech house for the main room can be heard on the title track, while the bouncy funk of "Como Los Triuleros" calls to mind the sounds of iO Mulen or Djebali. On the flip, you have the mental groove of "Old Birds" and its sexy vocal which is perfect mood music for Sunday morning boat parties.
