Cat: MRR 005. Rel: 22 Jun 20
  1. Sloppy From Two Fingers (13:55)
  2. Stripped To The Bones (11:45)
Review: Despite his truly idiosyncratic sound, Zefzeed has long been one of the most underrated talents within Romania's prolific minimal techno scene. Having a consistent output over the years on mainly smaller imprints, it's nice to see him getting the recognition he deserves on an established label here - returning to Cluj-Napoca's Midi Records. The 'Strip Tease' EP features two typically arcane and complex tracks in the style you've come to expect from the Timisoara-based producer and DJ. On the A side, we have the mesmerising and otherworldly bounce of "Sloppy From Two Fingers" which is perfect tackle for getting weird at the after hours. On the flip, "Stripped To The Bones" is a similarly subdued affair and bordering on near psychedelic moments, complete with the huge bassline, clipped drum programming and woozy sound design that will intensify the effects of sleep deprivation and paranoia. Tip!

  1. Snap & Crackle (7:23)
  2. Rubix (7:30)
Review: Harry Wills hail from Frankfurt and is making himself an increasingly vital voice in the tech house scene. His latest floor facing missives are as tight as ever on the new 2XYellow label. "Snap & Crackle" goes first and almost falls over itself it is in such a hurry with its tech funk drums and microcosm of pops, clicks and synth daubs. "Rubix" is built on hefty, hard hitting kicks that are perfectly well swung and come with more tripped out synth details that get right under your skin.

  3. To The Trees (XDB remix) (6:51)
  4. The Birds (5:46)
Review: Much loved party crew Just Jack serve up mainstay Dan Wild in fine form here. "Late Night Traffic" is a soft acid opener with punchy drums making for a broken beat that really seduces. "Lost In The Fog" is another deep one, with silky pads and icy hi hats with dub master XDB then adding his own spin, with paddy drums and trippy synth details taking you late into the night. Last of all, "The Birds" is slick tech house with nice smooth drum loops and a far sighted sense of soul. These are contemporary house tracks that all exude excellent design and have their own sense of character.

Review: Since making his debut in 2012, tech-house/deep house fusionist Jose Vizcaino has released a handful of rock-solid EPs as digital downloads, but for one reason or another has never seen his music pressed to vinyl. Happily, Seven Villas has finally given him the opportunity to own a physical product dedicated to his ear-pleasing productions. There's much to admire across the EP, from the dreamy, bleep-sporting two-step/tech-house deepness of "Graffiti" and the similarly spacey, deliciously drifting "Road Trip", to the effortlessly warm and groovy "Transitions" (all delay-laden electric piano snippets, echoing chords and tactile grooves), and the chunkier tech-house roll of opener "Atras".

Review: Originally released back in 1996, Felix Da Housecat's one and only release under The Visionary alias gets a much needed reissue here on original imprint Music For Your Ears - a lesser known sublabel of NYC legend DJ Duke's Power Music Distribution, While the mesmerising energy of "Free My Soul" does well in its own right, here it's accompanied with remixes by the legendary Danish-born label boss: the first being the sensual and emotive deepness of the "Deep Skool" Mix, followed by the stomping "Visionary" Remix that's powered by a thunderous rhythm department and a hypnotic vocal refrain. Get your hands on a piece of proper house music history!

Cat: MONABERRY 061. Rel: 06 Jul 20
  1. Joko (Andhim remix) (6:01)
  2. Line (Till Von Sein remix) (6:13)
Review: Viktor Talking Machine are back on Monaberry, only this time their limber, discofied house music is getting the remix treatment from two choice operators. "Joko" is up first, getting a buoyant seeing-to by Andhim who injects the track with all kinds of nerve-jangling excitement. There are MIDI brass stabs, lush pads and a percussive workout to get people working the floor with all their might. "Line" gets a more tender touch from Till Von Sein, whose playful approach is imbued with sunshine and good vibes while sporting a little Balearic slouch in its easy tempo and airy atmosphere.

Review: Berlin's mysterious Lize imprint have chosen yet another kindred spirit of the most enigmatic kind to present the next release: none other than Tommy Vicari Jr. The Sheffield based producer serves up his idiosyncratic style of deep house on 'Portrait Of Thomas', from the dusty and looped-up emotions of the title track that's reminiscent of Motor City icons like Andres or Big Strick, to the roughed-up and off-kilter jack of "Track 3" (Tribute To RP) on the flip, followed by the dirty, heads-down basement vibe of "Pretend It Didn't Happen". All four cuts are made to play and perfect tackle for any decent open-end afterhours party.

Review: Lee Burridge's All Day I Dream label continues to roll out the most dreamy and escapist house grooves around. Always tinged with beauty and melancholy in equal measure, this latest offering comes from Argentinian Valdovinos. There is a new age ambiance and yawning architecture to these tunes that takes you out into wide open, sun drenched spaces. There is a real cosmic majestic to "C Moon" that makes it more suited for the after dark hours while "Night Whispers" also gets a little darker and freakier for the trippier moments of a set.

Review: Nemo Vachez and GrooveGuy take care of one side each on this superb new EP for Record Store Demo. "Cyan" from Vachez is a track defined by busy melodies that hiccup and pop over a shimmering line of steely percussion and tech-funk kicks. Roomy breakdowns add to the sci-fi vibes and make for colourful listening. Grooveguy's "Andromeda" gets a little more squelchy thanks to a superbly wet bassline, while crispy snapping snares and tripped put pads lend a space breaks feel. These are two perfectly contemporary, floor ready cuts that pair style and function in equal measure.

  4. House Music Will Never Die (Glenn Afro dub) (7:36)
Review: For their latest deep dive into the world of hard-to-find house classics, Italy's Groove Records take us back to 1996. "House Music Will Never Die" marked Glenn Underground's first collaboration with vocalist Cei-Bei (AKA Curtis Harman) and has long been considered one of the Chicagoan producer's finest releases. Wisely, Groove has decided against tinkering with a classic, instead serving up all four mixes from the original Cajual Records 12". Choose between the classic deep house soul of the GU Cei-Bei Foot Mix, the wonderfully summery, jazz guitar-laden CVO Bismark Hotel Mix, Mark Grant's brilliantly evocative, stretched-out interpretation, and a killer Afro Dub that makes great use of a heavy analogue bassline. All four versions are top notch.

Review: A staple of the Strictly Underground discography, "Luv Dancin" is the seminal NYC deep house classic that you should all be familiar with. Produced by the legendary Roger 'S-Man' Sanchez under the Underground Solution alias back in 1990, it receives a much welcomed reissue here, containing all versions and original B sides. From its heart warming house organs, to the boompty bass and super swing-fuelled rhythm, all together providing the perfect backdrop for its roaring vocals. Other than the five remixes, there's also the soulful and emotive "Deep In My Mind" and the hypnotic latin-infused vibes of "Afterthought".

  2. Grime-O-Litious (7:16)
Review: Ukranian tech house hero Andrew Guyvoronsky aka Tripmastaz is back, with more boompty and swing-fuelled business after the label's two year hiatus - and it's his most personal one yet. On the A side of '06', we have the groovy heads-down stomper that is "My B Is Better Than Your B" and while that may be a subjective thing, broadly speaking - we can sure give him the benefit of the doubt there. This one will mix in well with any of your Cab Drivers records for sure! On the flip, we have the smooth deep house of "Grime-O-Licious' and it's proper mood music if we've ever heard it. This chilled and dubby jam is perfect tackle for the afterhours.

Review: Since 2013 Tijn (not to be confused with J. Tijn) has been issuing a steady stream of high grade minimal and tech house for labels like Decay, Memoria, Moss Co and more recently Vuew. Now he comes to Aesthetic for a varied EP that leads in with the dusky, blue-hued tones of "Waves" - a moment for true immersion and introspection. By way of contrast, "CC" captures the energy of classic mid 00s minimal a la labels like Cynosure - all bugging samples hopping around a swinging groove - and we can't get enough of it. "Sundayyzz" takes things in a spookier direction, keeping that stripped back shuffle but holding down a more mellow energy compared to "CC".

Review: Thomas Xu tends not to release much music, but when he does it tends to be musically rich, rhythmically complex and very, very good. That's certainly the case with "Places In Time", his second EP on Steady Flight following an inspired 2017 debut on Theo Parrish's Sound Signature imprint. There's much to set the pulse racing across the EP, from the heavily analogue, synthesizer-powered, intergalactic jazz-funk looseness of "Easin", and the slipped 21st century instrumental space-jazz of "Tired A Being Tired (What Are We Here For)", to the densely layered, piano-driven ambience of "Promise 2", and the hard-to-pigeonhole eccentricity of closing cut "Let's Go See Roy".

Review: With a discography that stretches right back to the mid 1990s, Johanz Westerman is one of Holland's longest-serving underground house and techno producers. He's also a student of electronic music history, as this wholehearted, EP-length tribute to the work of Giorgio Moroder and Patrick Cowley proves. Title-track "More Love" is little less than an acid-laden, instrumental re-build of the Moroder-produced, Cowley-remixed Donna Summer classic "I Feel Love", while "Kickin In" is the kind of muscular, synthesizer-heavy electro-disco throb-job that would have gone down a storm at legendary San Francisco club the Trocadero at the turn-of-the-80s. Flipside opener "Warped Minds" explores similar sonic territory and sounds like it was inspired by Sylvester's "Do You Wanna Funk". There's even a sweaty, delay-laden rhythm track reprise for those DJs who love percussion.

Review: One of the brightest talents in the UK house firmament, Thatmanmonkz is back on his own Shadeleaf label with an EP of remixes and versions centering around last year's Non Zero Sum Game album. First up is the mighty Waajeed, who brings some Motor City bump to "Them Thangs" in fine style before 'Monkz's own "Dubstramental" of the track. Review: Cedesciu Wax is a vinyl only label, owned and curated by the Miami based DJ and producer Lulla, that is dedicated to showcasing underground minimal house music. For their fifth release, they are showcasing the Argentine Szyszko's debut vinyl release. Mesmerising and ethereal tech house is the order of the day here, with tracks like "Reloj" calling to mind the work of Sublee, Alci or Camelia, while the lean and subtle mood music of "Sei" definitely takes it cues from the Rominimal scene. Speaking of which, two champions of that sound get onboard for some remixes of the tracks; Nu Zau's moody rework is one of his best pieces of music we have heard in a while, while the ascendant Triptil ventures into arcane territory.

"No Proof" is totally on point: a deep, groovy and hypnotic roller from a dub techno state of mind and perfect tackle for the afterhours. Review: Australia's Subjoi has been having a jolly old time of late, slamming out hit after hit via Lost Palms, GASP and more. Now he comes to Lobster Theremin-affiliated Distant Hawaii to join the likes of Warwick, Sweely and East Of Eden in a retro house heatwave. While it may be classically-informed, Subjoi's sound is far from throwback - it's expressive, emotional club music plain and simple. Just stick on "Like It Was" and feel the lingering keys and vocal snippets taking you far, far away. There's a garage swing to "Drownin", while "Shelter Me" is dripping with moody New Jersey organs - the palette and energy shifts track to track making this as pleasurable for home listening as it is for the club.

Review: Berlin scene stalwart Nico Stojan is back on his respected Ouie imprint that he co-runs with Acid Pauli, with their seventeenth edition here. On the 'Cardano' EP you can sure bet that it is jam packed with glassy-eyed and bittersweet dancefloor narratives, as evident on the sublime title A side title track. Soothing melodies, warm bass and subtle rhythms underpin this melodic deep house journey throughout. On the flip, we have two more numbers aimed squarely at the Sunday morning dancefloor in the form of "Together" and "Inhale", the latter in particular will take you into the exotic with its chilled-out summertime island vibes.
