Review: Helena is a record label based in Porto run by Goncalo (808). Limited vinyl only releases thus far have come courtesy of Module Werk, Aleks and Ephemeral and it is now over to one Altitude who, to those that know: is none other than Torontonian legend Matt Thibideau, who since the late '90s has been expertly executing dub techno experiments via his Blue Recordings imprint in addition to appearances on Daniel Bell's 7th City and more recently the promising Assemble Music: also from Portugal. A side cut "Transforming" has razor sharp precision in everything from the bass to those super tight dub chords and rhythms: shows the man is still as on-point as ever. Glacial aesthetics prevail well into the B side, with the deep and cavernous journey "Touch Sensor" and its immersive tones which gently scream 'welcome to the North' much in the same vein of Rod Modell or Brian Kage.

  1. Over (11:33)
  2. A Gain (7:29)
  3. I (6:38)
Review: Arapu is very much one of the key Romanian artists of the moment. Of course, like his revered countrymen, that means techno that is elegant, minimal, and delicately detailed. His own take on the style is often littered with curious little motifs and trippy loops that also characterise this new one on heavyweight vinyl for Liniar. "Over" is a brilliant opener with languid Balearic guitar riffs echoing over supple drum work which will hook you in and encourage your mind to wander, whereas "A Gain" is a more direct, driving minimal techno cut with warped synths peeling off an urgent groove. "I" closes out with a funky undercarriage and dub house overtones that will get any basement popping off.

  1. Vampire Nightclub (feat Seth Troxler) (8:20)
  2. Without You (extended 12" mix) (8:37)
Review: It's been pretty hard to escape the hoo-hah surrounding Art Department ever since YouTube footage surfaced of the dropping "Without You" at the Hot Natured DEMF party back in June. The Juno editorial branch is in complete agreement that such hype is totally justified on this debut release for Crosstown Rebels. "Vampire Night Club" sits across the A Side with a guest spot from Seth Troxler, er, vamping it up on vocals backed by some haunting harmonies from Art Department's Kenny Glasgow. It's the dynamic usage of infectiously dark bass patterns and intermittent synth stabs that help cement the eerie atmosphere that pervades the track. This sense of pulsing menace is transferred to the B Side brilliance of "Without You". Made for play in dark venues where the crunching beat, throbbing bassline and creeped out vocal refrain from Glasgow can reverberate around the walls and your cerebral cortex, "Without You" is destined to become a mainstay in record boxes for many months to come.

  1. Remake (Basic Reshape mix)
  2. The Climax (Basic Reshape mix)
Review: Basic Reshape features Basic Channel's very free takes of two of Carl Craig's projects that were originally released separately from each other on his own Planet E label. The Basic Reshape of "The Climax" (which itself was originally released in 1991 on Retroactive) first appeared on the 2001 reissue of this milestone in Carl's work, is one of the most hypnotic and driving club tracks that Mark Ernestus and Moritz von Oswald have produced in their post Basic Channel period. "Remake" Basic Reshape from 1994 relates to "Remake Uno/Duo", Carl's sample-based re-interpretation of Manuel Göttschings epochal E2-E4. Basic Channel take a radical, abstract, sample-free approach with a breathtaking slow motion groove under a multilayered sound sphere. This track also appeared on the Basic Channel CD.

  1. Patrice Baumel - "Roar" (Adana Twins remix) (8:16)
  2. Adana Twins - "Aufstand Der Massen" (7:18)
Review: Originally released back in 2009, Amsterdam scene stalwart Patrice Baumel's anthem "Roar" now gets a - pardon the pun - roaring main room rework (featuring one massive drop!) by Hamburg's favourite sons Adana Twins - hot off their latest Watergate Mix. This is the first EP stemming from the mix itself, and could easily be the standout track off the compilation. On the flip is the adrenalised and mesmerising dancefloor drama of "Aufstand Der Massen" which has already been in constant rotation with heavy hitters like Solomun and Tale Of Us.

  3. Bicep & Hammer - "Icebowl" (4:59)
  4. Bicep & Hammer - "Day 3" (6:30)
Review: By their standards, 2014 has been a relatively quiet year for Belfast boys Bicep, with a remix 12" and the Circles EP on Aus Music their only releases of note. "Lyk Lyk" is, then, a welcome return to action. The title track is particularly sweaty and once again mines vintage rave influences, with fluid synths and cut-up vocals riding a classic late '80s/early '90s breakbeat groove. "Poly Pineapple" is a little deeper, with waves of wide-eyed synths crashing over a thumping house groove. On the flipside, the duo join forces with partner-in-blogging Hammer for a couple of cuts; the woozy, glacial, synth-heavy "Icebowl" and "Day 3", a stomping chunk of retro-futurist techno smothered in 808 State style synths. Balearic techno anyone?

  3. U-Bahn
Review: Born in 1974 in Sao Paulo, Gui Boratto is one of the owners of the Brazilian independent label Megamusic. In 2005, he began to focus on his own productions and compositions, developing a more narrative and personal style. With countless licenses on respected European labels such as Plastic City, Circle, Kompakt and now also Audiomatique, among others, Gui Boratto has managed to appear in the charts and playlists of people like Michael Mayer, Tiefschwarz, Steve Bug, Phonique, Martin Landsky and Hernan Cattaneo. The title track is "Beluga" on the A-side. This track is a an exciting mixture of old school house elements paired with pumping modern electronic house sounds jacked up with sophistication, perhaps hence the name "Beluga"? "Strobe" on B1 is an hypnotizing minimal loopy groove-monster and "U-Bahn" on B2 takes you on a ride through the Berlin tube system.

Review: One third of Azymuth and an all-round legend Ivan Conti is set to drop his first solo album in over 20 years next year. And here's a wee teaser with three on-point versions from three exceptional soul craftsmen: Max Graef goes on the cloud hopping dreamy jazz tip, allowing Ivan's brushed drums to shimmer in the all the right spaces, Contours flex hard on a classic bruk vibe where the main players are Conti's swing and the juicy fruit bassline while Glenn Astro gets lively with a heavily shaking afro rhythm and sweeping p-funk chords. Bring on the album.

Review: The title says it all with this gathering of Chez Damier gems for the Mojuba label which features the man himself looking rather content with life on the cover. First up is "A Dedication To Joss", one of the finest moments Ralph Lawson has ever been involved in with its instantly recognisable vocal snaps and crafty construction. Then two mixes of "Forever" with Stacey Pullen draw on the evergreen "Forever Monna" riff and work it amongst some chunkier basslines and drums to bring different slants to a legendary house riff. Last but by no means least is the classic Chez and Ron Trent collaboration "Don't Try It". Don't sleep!

Review: Mint Condition is a reissue label doing things properly: unearthing choice cuts from the house and techno spectrum that are not the most obvious, but are always high quality. Enter Deanne Day, a little known project from UK legend Andrew Weatherall in collaboration with David Harrow. It was an alias reserved for club focussed productions back in the mid-nineties and this EP offers up three of their best: the majestic melodic minimalism of "Horicho", the rubbery and driving dub of "Body Control" and the quickened techno funk "Honk (If You've Seen The King)". These are oldies but goldies, make no mistake.

Review: Whut!? DJ Qu, Peven Everett and Josh 'Blaze' Milan on a cut together? That's correct the latest Strength Music transmission pairs up label boss Qu with two of house music's most iconic names in Everett and Milan for the A Side two parter "The Way". On the opening version, Everett's fragile vocal, is the perfect foil for one of Qu's deeper spacious arrangements which is blessed by Milan's key playing skills, with the latter element even more prominent on 'part two'. Face down and it's DJ Qu in solo mode for the excellent "Liquid" which sees a mainframe of clipped percussion and gurgling analogue basslines lifted towards the stars by the most wondrous of Utopian synth patterns and gurgling analogue basslines. Do check the accompanying heads down, bugged out "Liquid Beats" version too. Big release from NYC!

Review: It's been 12 months since Ramon Quezada's last solo EP as DJ Qu. "Heed The Message", then, is arguably long overdue. It's a pleasingly eclectic affair, with the A-side alone boasting both a funk-rock sampling deep house shuffler (the eccentric "May I Say") and a percussively wonky, undeniably druggy fusion of loose-limbed MPC drumming, sustained chords and woozy vocal samples. Over on the flip, Quezada continues to surprise, first by serving up the densely layered tribal drums and rolling jazz bass of "Picazon", then via the hazy, field recordings-laden dub techno/deep house fusion of atmospheric closing cut "Circumvent".

Much like the original UK garage days, this crew is putting out firebomb after firebomb, focusing only on the beats and the swing, much like the artists who have inspired them. "Track 1" is a suave, laid-back garage joint with a misty haze enwrapping its slick beats and bass tones; "Track 2", much like its counterpart, is a magnificently balanced shell-shocker, bashing out the UK heat on the floor, mashing up swinging beats with a whole load of filtered percussion and ultra-sexy arrangements. Large up!

To celebrate, the long-serving DJ duo is offering up an epic compilation of Rage favourites split over four double albums. Part One offers a great introduction to the series, flitting between familiar favourites (the throbbing, bass-heavy Dub of Leftfield's "Not Forgotten", Lennie De Ice's hardcore anthem "We Are I.E"), lesser celebrated gems (the dreamy deep house of One Tribe's "Is This All"), proto-jungle classics (Wots My Code's sub-heavy, bleep-sporting "Dubplate", Foul Play's lusciously hazy "Being With You") and genuine rude boy smashers (Noise Factory's "The Future").

Review: Santa Cruz de Tenerife based Pablo Fierro is up next for Compost Black label, following up top releases on the likes of Atjazz, Suol and Innervisions. Speaking of the latter label, the title track here on the The Timanfaya EP features the same kind of Afro influenced hi-tech soul you've come to know him for, while "Baobab" features the same kind of emotions and hypnotic polyrhythms you'd similarly expect of Toto Chiavetta. Finally on the flip, we have the ethereal dancefloor drama of "Kalaa" which steadily builds the elements of tension and suspense over its duration, employing mesmerising melodies, entrancing bell tones and subtle rhythms to marvellous effect.
