Styrax Special 4 (yellow transparent vinyl 12")
Cat: STYRAXI/STYRAX J. Rel: 09 Dec 11
  1. 154 - "Daze" (3:25)
  2. Damon Lamar - "Rising Sun" (7:57)
  3. Claro Intelecto - "Signifier" (6:19)
  4. Lowtec - "Dat America" (6:48)
Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

  1. Track 1 (7:53)
  2. Track 2 (8:01)
  3. Track 3 (5:59)
Review: By their standards, Danish duo 2 Bit Crew enjoyed a very productive 2014, releasing well-received singles on Deso, Luvdancin' and their own self-titled imprint. Here they return to the latter with three more sumptuous chunks of tactile, arms-spread deepness. The untitled A-side arguably hits home hardest, with sweet, delay-laden loops and delicious riding a house tempo Motor City techno groove. The second track, nestled at the beginning of side B, seemingly shimmers with positive intent. The duo opts for Chez Damier style bass and a touch of vintage US house bump, while smothering the groove in darting synths and huggable electronics. Finally, the third track goes even deeper, delivering the dreamy tech-house equivalent of a long, sloppy kiss.

Review: The 2 Bit Crew have injected a much needed breath of fresh air to the UK house sphere over the last four or five years, and it's just a nice sensation to hear something that at least tries to be different and more provocative with the tools at its disposal. Here we have a remix EP of three of their cuts, the first in the form of a break-ridden deep house ride from Central Toast on "Peanut Butter & Jam", the second another break-heavy house experiment by Manmade Distanza on "Hoop Dreams", and finally a mesmeric sort of tribal house nugget by DJ Sports Emotional on "Baaam". TIP.

Body EP (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: RR 003. Rel: 14 Sep 15
  1. Body (6:04)
  2. Day Four (5:59)
Review: Enriching the sonic portal, techno conscript Antenna Happy marks his second release on Reinhardt with two pieces of finely crafted electronic music, in the shape of Body and Day Four.
First to the fold, Body. A dance floor essential, unraveling and built to work the late night hours. Plug into the psychedelic mainframe, and convert to this robust track.
Next up, Day Four takes the reigns. Ghostly pads forged the way before mechanical synths reset the system. Day Four much like its bedfellow Body, holds court in both the worlds of house and techno.
Debuting under his Antenna Happy guise (after a 20 year period absent from releasing music) in September of last year with the esteemed Pinto EP, he has since been commissioned for a vinyl 12" release on Tenth Circle (Defected Records sub-label) and enlisted to remix Alpines, Vessels, Name/age and Ephemerals. Antenna Happy also self-releases a limited edition white label for Record Store Day, and after debuting his new live show in London during February, further club shows and festivals appearances are to follow for this inventive producer.

Cat: JD 047. Rel: 07 Nov 19
  1. Jazz Carnival (LP mix) (8:59)
  2. Jazz Carnival (Space Jazz mix - Global Communication remix) (11:15)
Review: We hear on the grapevine that there could be some seriously desirable Global Communication vinyl reissues on the way in 2020. To tide us over until then, Far Out has decided to reissue one of the legendary West Country duo's most celebrated and sought-after remixes: their 1996 "Space Jazz" remix of Azymuth classic "Jazz Carnival". Pritchard and Middleton's version is a spacey deep house epic of intergalactic proportions, with subtle elements of the Brazilian band's loose and languid '90s re-recording of the track (the B-side "LP Mix") weaving in and out of a warm, rich and hypnotic groove. It's one of the most dancefloor-friendly of all Global Communication remixes - many were straight ambient or downtempo rubs - but also one of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's finest.

Well Cut Records 002 (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: WCR 002. Rel: 16 Mar 15
  1. Adventures In Lagos
  2. Three Strikes & Out
  3. Disorganics
  4. Silver Lining (Horace Silver RIP)
Review: "The second release for Danny Ward's (dubble d/moodymanc) Well Cut Records features an ep from "Balaphonic". A project which fuses organic live instrumentation and musicianship with deep and modal dancefloor sensibilities.
"Adventures in Lagos" is a long evolving and deep building hypnotic afro groove featuring spoken word samples of Fela Kuti and street sounds taken from 1970s Lagos.
"Three Strikes and Out" is a lush sounding deep, 119 bpm organic groove which builds into a percussion workout and has been championed of late to great effect in the sets of Osunlade.
Opening side 2, "Disorganics" is a nod toward the great Brazillian recordings of the 1960s and seventies yet keeps the tempo firmly locked for the dancefloor. Live samba percussion opens into themes built on 10 string guitar parts and a driving double bass line which build to a melodic drop based on a theme played on plucked cello! Definitely one for the heads!.
Closing the e.p. is "Silver Lining", in tribute to the late great jazz musician and musical visionary Horace Silver. Dark, ride driven, earthy house drums propel a modal grand piano and double bass riff to build the tension which evolves with an ever expanding analogue synth line, keeping energy high whilst percussion and string parts develop to augment the dynamics!

Apex Of The Sun's Way (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: O/O 001. Rel: 26 Jan 15
  1. Apex Of The Sun's Way
  2. Solar Poise
Review: Refined selector and esteemed producer, Steve Braiden breaks out on his own with the Off Out label after some excellent releases for the likes of Rush Hour and Joy Orbison's now defunct Doldrums label. It's a good day when there is some new Braiden productions to soak up, and hopefully the establishment of Off Out will see them appear with more regularity in the future. As an opening statement, Apex Of The Sun's Way is a powerful one indeed! The title track is characterised by the sort of rhythmic poise we have come to expect from a Braiden production, with searing emotive textures rubbing up against some of the crispest drums heard this year. "Solar Poise" is equally memorable, with strange ghostly vocals trapped deep in the mix and an unpredictable synth careening around the channels.

Review: One of our favourite labels Millions Of Moments pays a fitting tribute to a true Detroit great in the dearly departed Aaron Carl. His passing late last year was a truly sad end to a glorious career and one of his finest moments in "Wallshaker" is revisited here. Massively rare upon original release back in 1997, Millions Of Moments have already reissued "Wallshaker" and it's accompanying and quite hypnotic "Midnite Dub" back in 2007 but here they go the extra mile, enlisting Sven Weismann to add his own touch to the track. Spread across the B Side, Weismann delivers a superlative remix which transforms the rattling original into a lavishly deep and dubby excursion filled with delightful orchestral flourishes. Extra special sleeve packaging and all profits going to the Carl family just add reasons to indulge in this special release. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Review: The vibe stays low down and nasty as Unknown To The Unknown sublabel House Crime rolls into its fourth release. Whoever DJ Club 1235 is, they known how to make a no-nonsense hardware house jam, and "Constant" that leads this record is just that. Straight up gnarly bleeps over a basic stomping beat - sometimes that's all that you need to make a club wrecker. "Trust" is also a particular treat with its slightly more developed lead line and urgent drums, but don't overlook the shorter interlude tracks that make this an EP with many different shades of jack to it.

Review: Lithuanian mainstay Donatello first appeared on Norman H's Stripped label back in 2012, and he's since returned for repeat trips into warm, polished progressive house. Now he appears alongside Shane Blackshaw for a rare outing on vinyl with the immersive groover "Catch 23". Undulating chords and dubby FX processing make for an intoxicating blend on both the vocal and instrumental mixes of the lead track, while label regular Kastis Torrau gets busy on the flip with a more brooding version of the original, using a similarly delicate sound palette but turning it to noirish chord progressions for the darker dancefloor.

Review: The Peer Pressure EP from the under-rated Mark Forshaw finds Scenery Records once again highlighting the rich strain of local production talent in the Liverpool area. Involved in the Merseyside scene since the '90s, Forshaw has released on labels like Mathematics, Tabernacle and Apartment and is also a member of Phantom Planet Outlaws with John Heckle and Binny. If you've checked Forshaw's prior output you will be happy with Peer Pressure as soon as the grubby, jacked up house of the title track hits its groove, with his four other cuts heading down a similarly unpredictable path. Kudos to Scenery for seeking out Swedish producer Daniel Andreasson to remix the title track too! This is another no nonsense EP from Scenery that is lovably rugged and unpredictably creative.

Review: Having already made a strong connection with the ever-excellent Udacha label, Russian duo Gamayun now take their talents to Hesperian Sound Division to unfurl more of their delicate, richly musical creations. "Golden Ratio" leads in on stunning jazz piano refrains, edging threads of percussion into the mix with poise that sets Gamayun apart from the rest of the crowd. "Ascension" takes things in a more cosmic direction, all swooping and swooning synth lines beamed in from a distant star. "Untitled" has a more lazy, blues-minded attitude, while "Uvolnenie" edges a little more techno influence into the mix, but truly this is space-age music played by musicians with genuine chops.

  4. Warpaint (Mantrac aka MR.C remix)
Review: The next release on Paul Rip's Specimen Records is by God of the Machine, the brainchild of deep house and techno maestro, Derrick Thompson a.k.a. Drivetrain. The EP kicks of with the original, a powerful slice of jackin' tribal techno, its bleeps, tones and chants sitting atop a tight percussive groove that's infectious from the first beat to the last drop. Next up comes Hijacker's electro workout. Its beats are old school yet the attitude is set firmly in the future with its square wave bass line, trippy noises and swooping sciKfi pads. Santonio Echols takes it back to Detroit with a simple yet driving tech house rendition containing sublime melodic chords, eerie pads and a hypnotic pad stab that sends tingles up your spine. Mr.C finishes with one of his typically infectious acid workouts, where he adds a cheeky bassline, haunting pads and cowbell pings to blend and morph into the twisted effects of a psychoactive substance.

Review: The Rhythm Plate posse are certainly no strangers to Hudd Traxx, and so it makes perfect sense to see their Goshawk project landing on the long-serving Northern deep house label. The vibes are impeccable on this 12" from start to finish, not least with the soulful sway of "My Heart" bolstered by Astral T's vocals. "High In The Evergreens" meanwhile takes a woozy approach to straight up house music with its dreamy synth tones, and "Yes In This Way" turns up the pressure with a killer bassline and feverish gospel preacher vocal hooks. "My Business Ain't Your Business" takes a more laid back, choppy approach to the groove without losing any of that all important soul.

Review: Fatdog Records returns after a break, offering contributions from 3 artists new to the label - The Rutan, Tom Mc Connell and Mark Hand. FDR003 offers a development from the deep house template on the last EP, this time taking us further into deeper Detroit territories. Mark Hand offers us Drexciyan techno in the form of 'Cold Feet'. The Rutan's 'Fable' sits somewhere between Vakula and some of Henrik Schwarz's earlier dub-house experiments, while Fat Dog takes us to the murky back alleys of his mind with 'Jaffa Cakes'. Finally Tom Mc.Connell's 'Juniper' takes us into wonkier groove Rhodes stylings which rounds off the EP very nicely indeed. Review: Warren Harris continues to enjoy his most prolific year since the 90s with another immaculate, velvet groove EP on Return To Fade (who gave us his perennial "Caught In The Mxyzptik" EP last year) "In The Morning" is a sumptuous sunrise affair that's powered by a subtle vocal layering over a beat so smooth you barely notice it. "Psalms" offers wisdom beyond its six minutes with yearning jazz chords and soaring Claussellian pads while "Perhaps" moves closer to the dancefloor with a precision balance of weight and introspection. Remix wise Earl Jeffers joins the fray with a Balearic bomb; all rim shots and wizardry, drop this and everyone will get down to shake; there's no 'perhaps' about it.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: From the label: Especial starts its 3rd set of releases welcoming Frankfurt's Hotel Lauer for an EP of unadulterated uplifting club music. A meeting at the Garden festival finale in idyllic Croatia last summer along the lines of 'I love your records' / 'I love your label' came to the instant conclusion to bring Team Lauer to Especial. Things starts with the most club friendly and definitely head-rushing track ever on Especial, in "Tamzarian". Acid, tick. 909, tick. Piano, tick. The sound of the summer encapsulating in 6 and half pulsating minutes. The pace continues on "Sanger". A tougher beast, with a nod to Especial homeboys Mr Fairplay and Mr Sen, this is no pastiche, but takes classic Lauer production of water-tight percussion, snapped hats, layered loops, drops and lifts and brings it all together for the personal favourite of the EP. "Perry Patch" brings the 303 to the fore, arpeggios underpin, while trademark cut-up vocal stabs create a melody to swirl in your subconscious for days. Like a song you feel you've always known but never heard. Finally, the electro inspired "Klutzny" rounds this off. Kraftwerk keys, 1981 golden years TOTPs on the mind.

Review: It's been a while since we heard something fresh from Ike Release. The Chicago-based producer was on a productive roll through 2015, both solo and alongside Hakim Murphy in Innerspace Halflife, but now he breaks his silence with a sturdy two-tracker for Finale Sessions. As you would expect, gritty machine jams are the order of the day, but there's plenty of soul and mystery sprinkled atop the box beats to make for spellbinding results. Both "Tangerines" and "Tungsten" lurk in the lower registers of the tempo range, but there's a weight behind these productions that makes it far from mere warm-up fodder.

Review: Fleeting Wax hits its third release with this bout of sinister, sleek disco for the darker dancefloor that finds Bucharest-based duo Valeriu Borcos and Eduard Gabia getting remixed from a strong cast of characters. The ever prolific Khidja is up first, turning "Choose Your Colour Gypsy Dark" into a brooding, almost-rocking affair with an irresistible noirish tint to it. The label heads then get busy with a version that ups the arpeggios in a nod to Italo amidst plenty of dubby FX, before Mehmet Aslan stretches out across the B-side with a more yearning version that lets a little light in on the situation. It's a diverse, potent bag of versions that do credit to the original while saying something new as well.

  1. Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad (Enrico Sangiuliano remix) (7:17)
  2. Go (Manic Brothers remix) (9:09)
Review: Moby's back catalogue has been reworked rather a lot lately, with Drumcode following the lead of 2DIY4 in releasing a string of contemporary remixes of the Vegan beat-smith's classic productions. This 12" - the second of four the Swedish imprint is releasing - begins with a storming version of "Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad" by Enrico Sanguilano. It makes good use of the original's famous vocal sample, working it into a banging techno track that looks to the riff-heavy world of trance for inspiration. On the flip, the Manic Brothers offer their interpretation of "Go", combining the original's evocative chords and vocal samples with heavy new techno beats.

Review: Well Cut Records is the new label project from Danny Ward, known mainly for his releases and productions as Moodymanc, Dubble D and as part of 2020soundsystem. The label aims to be a showcase for various production projects and collaborations from Danny and to live up to its moniker by releasing records that will appeal to the more discerning record buyer and DJ by staying true to the roots and aesthetics of House music whilst exploring its many shades and colours! This debut release perfectly captures the Well Cut approach, pairing two Moodymanc productions on the A Side with an equal amount of collaborations between Ward and newcomer Lenny Middles.
