Wanna See You Pop
Cat: 2BC 002. Rel: 28 Jan 14
  1. Wanna See You Pop
  2. Gonna Let You Go
Review: Bringing a dose of irreverence to the normally po-faced deep house scene, fresh-faced producers 2 Bit Crew make good their second release with a pair of cheeky tracks that remind us it's about having fun in the midst of serious grooves. The beat, bassline and swing on "Wanna See You Pop" may be first-rate New Jersey house music, but the vocal is an unlikely suspect that winds up defining the track in an off-kilter manner. Likewise on "Gonna Let You Go" the diva vocal cries take the limelight, and make for a heated dancefloor message that should tug at the soul and the hips without hesitation.

  1. Ghetto Man (7:22)
  2. Don't Wait Up (5:00)
  3. 48 Hours (7:06)
  4. Illuminated (6:11)
Review: Omar-S affiliate Big Strick can usually be relied upon to deliver solid, soul-flecked deep house with that distinctive Detroit touch. That's certainly what he delivers on Simple Pleasures, the latest 12" for his 7 Days Entertainment imprint, and his first outing of 2015. There's a lovely warmth and sun-kissed fluidity to bongo-laden opener "Ghetto Man", whose enduring appeal is partly based on the delicious melodiousness of Strick's hazy electronic pianos. "Don't Wait Up" successfully riffs on a similar theme, before "48 Hours" displays the veteran Detroiter's skills with dense percussion and ocean-deep chords. Best of all, though, is the dreamy beatdown of "Illuminated", whose thicket drum machine beats and glassy-eyed pads are particularly memorable.

Alpha & Omega

  1. Alpha & Omega
  2. Origin
  3. Bloodline
Review: FXHE bloodline member Big Strick continues to excel on his own 7 Days Ent. label, dropping his first 12" of 2012 which has a nice community feel to proceedings. Alpha & Omega introduces us to Generation Next, a rising 16 year old talent from the streets of Detroit who contributes alongside Mr Strickland to all three tracks here. Stylistically, the three tracks here seem equally indebted to Juan Atkins pure techno endeavours as Infiniti and the sub aqueous grooves of Drexciya, not least the restrained title track which shimmers from the murky depths into a finely crafted liquid groove imbued with bubbling elatory Utopian textures. On the flip "Origin" ripples with pressure, its rhythmic elements grappling for your attention as the space between them decreases with Strick and Gen Next expertly layering texture upon texture. A masterful 12" shaped exercise in modern day Detroit sounds is completed with the devious electrofied snap of "Bloodline".

Resivior Dogs Vol 1
  1. Big Strick - "Family Affair" (feat Omar S)
  2. Genereation Next - "Windsor Nights"
  3. Reckless Ron Cook - "Night Moves"
  4. Big Strick - "Armed & Dangerous"
Review: Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

Cat: PAMPA 025. Rel: 15 Jul 15
  1. 1979 (10:47)
  2. Nokturn (grand finale) (9:15)
Review: Deep house prankster DJ Koze is clearly on a bit of a roll at the moment; the Pampa boss served up the best DJ Kicks in quite some time and has released one of the singles of the year in XTC. Now he's welcoming peculiar deep house auteur Axel Boman back into the Pampa fold with a fine two track 12" 1979. The title track's simple conga beat, hypnotising strings and rising pads build the suspense until that awesome bassline drops. On the flip we have "Nokturn (Grand Finale)" an epic bongo and hi-hat workout reminiscent of The Hayden Andre Brown Project's "Tribal Life" on Strobe from back in 1991. Tip!

Review: Italian legend Carlo Troja aka Don Carlos launches Alex Bradley's new Utopia Club Tracks sub-label. After having played at one of the label's loft parties in North London, he soon returned to Milan and sent the very tracks which would come to inaugurate the imprint - and here they are. Romantic and deep Italian House sounds abound on "Tuono", with label boss Bradley and legendary UK house producer Neil 'Nail' Tolliday teaming up with guitarist Ollie Marks for a euphoric Utopia Sound Project mix entitled 'Tears of Petrichore', while 'La Versione Tribale Ambient' goes for a truly spiritual vibe which wouldn't sound out of place in a Kerri Chandler DJ set.

Review: Originally released on Shelter Records way back in 1993, the Atmosphere EP from US house icon Kerri Chandler remains a great example of the New Jersey producer's sublime touch when it comes to driving instrumental house music. Some 22 years on, this new edition from Shelter demonstrates the qualities of Atmosphere remain undimmed, put simply the four tracks possess a certain energy that is undeniably timeless. If house music is a feeling, then cuts such as "Climax 2" and "Atmosphere 2" prove that emotion is that feeling. A classic 12" that any self respecting house DJ needs in their collection stat!

  1. LesAlpx (extended) (6:08)
  2. Coorabell (10:33)
Review: Sam Shepherd may have spent the last few years offering up off-kilter, jazz-fired grooves and heady ambient soundscapes, but he still knows how to rock a dancefloor. That much is proved by his first Floating Points single for almost two years. "LesAlpx (Extended)" is his most forthright, club-focused cut in ages - a thrusting chunk of rumbling, peak-time techno built around heavy bass, sweaty drums, twinkling electro piano motifs and raging, foreboding electronics. Shepherd teases in the most melodic, rush-inducing elements, introducing spacey synthesizers and dreamy chords midway through. It's breathtakingly good. Flipside "Coorabell" is similarly potent, with acid style electronics, warm chords and sun-kissed electronics wrapped around swinging, two-step influenced house beats and a weighty, sub-heavy bassline. In a word: essential.

Moon Circuitry
Cat: SS 058. Rel: 29 Oct 15
  1. Moon Circuitry (6:40)
  2. Escape On The Lodge Freeway (8:25)
Review: This year, Theo Parrish seems to be doing his best to breathe new life into the careers of broken beat-era producers and musicians. Having previously released an excellent EP from Dego and Kaidi Tatham on Sound Signature, his latest missive comes from one-time conscious hip-hop producer Ge ology and one-time go-to jazz keys-man Mark De Clive-Lowe. The latter's brilliant synthesizer and piano work is arguably the highlight of both tracks here. On the spacey, P-funk influenced space-house swing of "Moon Circuitry" he does his best impression of Herbie Hancock, while "Escape On The Lodge Freeway" boasts intricate jazz solos atop a slightly tougher, chunkier deep house groove. Both tracks are, of course, impeccable.

  4. October Oasis
Review: FXHE fam Big Strick's 7 Days Entertainment introduced us to the 16 year old talents of Generation Next last year, and here he returns with his first full EP in Lamborghini Dreams. The title track comes across like OB Ignitt's recent classic "Oh Jabba" with smooth Rhodes chords and almost cosmic melody drifting across staccato drum machine beats, but the rest show a producer clearly inspired by the simple structures of Omar S' productions. "110" is a devastating piece of trippy, fluttering techno, "Hood Anthem" pairs bright staccato synth textures with curt percussion and "October Oasis" utilises bubbling analogue tones and shrill arpeggio drifts to great effect. The name Generation Next may come with a lot of expectation for someone so young, but on the strength of this release he's already poised to give his established peers a run for their money.

Review: Generation Next aka Tre Strickland - son of Omar-S associate Big Strick - has impressed since first joining forces with his dad on 2011's Like Father, Like Son LP. Here he proves his continued development as a producer with an excellent collection of warm, deep, soul-flecked house cuts for Strickland family imprint 7 Days Entertainment. As you'd expect, highlights are plentiful, from the skittering machine drums, dreamy chords and occasional organs of "Vanilla Sky", to the tech-tinged simplicity of the melodious-but-tough "Chilli Cheese Fries". Best of all, though, is the blazed beatdown feel of "The Tomorrow People", a hazy saunter through rich chords, shuffling percussion and snaking electronics.

Review: Big Stick's 7 Days Entertainment delivers more of the same quality house music from the Motor City that it has fast become renowned for. The Strickmaster's latest release comes from none other than his own offspring, the supremely talented Generation Next, whose Ender 12" will definitely appeal to anyone that checked last year's Like Father, Like Son. Lead cut "Ender" is uplifting and soulful with its tough beat, mesmerising pianos and that bassline! "Dream States" is all dreamy keys and cowbells; what more you want? (its equally as funky!). Closing out proceeding is "Joni" taking things deeper but that 808 beat is absolutely tight!

  1. Cascade (6:48)
  2. Vultures (6:38)
  3. Our Time (7:20)
Review: Tre Stickland is the man behind the Generation Next Project and, together with big bossman Big Strick, these two have become important new names from the 313. Stickland is on a solo mission this time, with three effective techno-house killers that'll appeal to fans of Omar S and Theo Parrish in his less soulful mood. "Cascade" is a simple yet full-bodied tune bolstered down by a dusty, mechanical beat flex, which is followed by the relatively more vibrant sounds and tones of the dubby house cut "Vultures". Over on the flipside, "Our Time" is the funk nugget, the track which manages to mix up the best elements of Generation Next's house, techno, and boogie sensibilities into a see minute monster. Recommended!

  2. Felipe Gordon & Kear - "Son Esquivias" (7:00)
Review: The insatiable rise of Felipe Gordon continues apace. The Colombian has been in a rich vein of form over the last 18 months, chalking up must-check EPs on Quintessentials, Toy Tonics, Lost Palms, and Razor 'N' Tape Reserve. Here he adds another label to his discography: celebrated Swedish house outlet Local Talk. Title track "For A Bright & Acid Future" hits the spot from the word go, with Gordon wrapping twisted, rough-neck acid lines around a bustling backing track rich in fuzzy synth stabs, jazzy bass guitar and crunchy beats. Over on the flip Kear lends a hand on the sun-kissed, soft focus brilliance of jazz-funk/Jazz/deep Latin house fusion of "Son Esquivias", a slab of breezy, percussion-rich goodness that could well be Gordon's most musically expansive track to date.

Review: Bristol's Lawrence Guy has already served up a killer EP on this label this year in the form of The Sun Is Warm And Directly Above You, and now he brings yet more happiness on this new four tracker. The title track is awash with neat guitar riffs and sci-fi sound effects, smart filter use and organic sounding drums that find their way into your affections in no time. 'Experience Health' is more bustling, with breakbeats and nice molten bass making you move. 'The Spirit' is perfectly loose and ramshackle house with proper piano playing and "Dreamer' ends this cosy and heartwarming EP on a surfing lo-fi house vibe that bubbles with new age energy.

This is a fine collection of moods and grooves for any occasion, and you can bet that his dubby and glacial aesthetic is evident throughout. From the chilling and bass-driven opener "Mother" and the Basic Channel-ish "F Dubb 1000", to ethereal and hypnotic rollers in the vein of fellow Scandinavians like S.A.M. on "If You Have A Mind It Will Wonder", and wonderfully representing the new breed of tech house on bangers like "Galatea" and "Manchester Lone Star". There's a lot to get through on here, but it's top notch all the way. Tip!

Review: The latest installment of the occasional Phonica White series comes from a familiar favourite, Berlin-based Japanese producer Iori. This is his third contribution to the series, all told, and is every bit as impressive as its' predecessors. He begins with "Monsoon", an atmospheric and percussive affair that blends the big room bounce of tech-house with the quietly evocative chords and tear-jerking melodies of gentler deep house. It feels rather tribal, all told, though arguably in outlook rather than the way it sounds. Flipside "Rainfall" is similarly tech-tinged in design, but a whole lot dreamier and deeper. It's melodies, in particular, are luscious, lending the whole thing a blissful, eyes-closed vibe.

Review: Jarren hails from LA and brings plenty of the warmth and soul of that place to his music on this, the third rase from the already fine sounding Slices of A Dog. Mixing up deep house grooves, sultry sax from Jacob "JD" Crouch, oodles of g-funk and plenty of lush broken beats, this is a record that will bring heat to even the coldest winter night. Low-riding drums, cold analogue pops and hits and meandering top lines all take your mind away while the squelchy bass keeps your ass on the move. LA legend Bendek is the man bringing that on guitar, and label's co-founder Brothermartino on flutes also plays a key part.

  1. Joakim - "EAHR"
  2. Panoram - "Alpha Marmara"
  3. Psychemagik - "Triumph Of The Gods"
  4. The Draughtsman - "Fade To Green"
Review: As the famed London establishment toasts ten years in the game, the first vinyl sampler from their chunky two disc compilation is out, featuring four choice cuts for those who want the tunes on wax. First up Joakim is in a particularly soaring mood with "EHAR", all analogue tweakery and cyclical rhythms with a distinctly optimistic feel. Meanwhile Panoram is laying down a more jammed-out, jazzy flavour of downtempo on "Alpha Mamara", which Psychemagik follows on from with the sumptuous disco strings and Schifrin funk of "Triumph of The Gods". The Draughtsman meanwhile gets into a much more mechanical frame of mind with the last track, falling into a broken beat and letting rich harmonies slowly form from hushed tones, exercising great patience and subtlety in the process.

Review: Henry Street is one of the foundational US house and disco labels and amongst its many, many gems are the two tracks presented here. Both are more than two decades old but still blow plenty of modern tracks out of the water: Johnick's "Play The World" is drenched in heart-wrenching soul and packed up with driving, organic house beats, while Mike Delgado's stone cold classic "Byrdman's Revenge" has those big chord loops and rooted train-track drums charging forwards with all the bristling energy of a young pup. Timeless stuff.

  3. Paradox (6:29)
  4. Vocus Pocus (6:15)
Review: DJ Tennis's Life And Death label welcomes Israeli artist Kino Todo for a new EP that perfect fit's the imprint's MO. That is to say this is electronic music with rich synth craft and plenty of guitar additions that make it psyched out and trippy as well as functional for the club. 'Paradox' is an unhinged drum workout and 'Vocus Pocus' manages to be rugged and retro yet also sleek and new at the same time. Todo's multicultural sounds on Moscoman's Disco Halal and Red Axes's Garzen labels, and now this transmission, sure are some of the most standout cuts of recent times.

  1. Shifting Gears (Vick Lavender Time Traveler Spirit mix) (11:49)
  2. Here In Spirit Sid (Vick Lavender Spirit & Life mix) (10:53)
Review: Local Talk is a workhorse label that has been providing DJs and dancers with quality heat for years. Vick Lavender perfectly embodies the label's sound with timeless grooves and lush melodies that will make people groove at any time of day or night. The 11-plus minute opus "Shifting Gears" is a real trip in the mould of Ron Trent thanks to its spiritual synth workouts, while "Here In Spirit Sid" picks up the pace with more prickly drums but plenty of golden layers of colour that will light up your soul.
