Review: Last year, Mother Tongue Records released Madre Lingua, an album of all-star collaborations between broken beat and deep house musicians and producers helmed by Verona-based Brit Patrick Gibin. This 12" updates two of the tracks from the set, with Gibin once again to the fore. On side A, he joins forces with long-time friend and studio buddy Kaidi Tatham to remix EDB and Gary Superfly's 'Pressure'. Their tack is bouncy and synth-heavy, with spacey, out-there lead lines and intergalactic-sounding pads rising above a Maurice Fulton-as-Syclops style bassline and loose-limbed house drums. On the flip, Marc De Clive-Lowe remixes his own collaboration with Gibin and Tommasso Capelleto, 'Apollo', brilliantly joining the dots between spacey jazz-funk and ambient on a superb, beat-free 'Dreamscape' mix.

Review: Croatian producer El Nino Andres is steadily building up an impressive arsenal of disco and deep house heaters on his own Jackie Brown label, having previously been running the Hija De Colombia imprint. On this fourth slab he pushes his sound into even more intriguing places. Opening track "Slow Mo Tuesdays" lets things roll out on a decidedly dusty tip carried by off-kilter drums. "Riviera Blues" stands out thanks to its tough 80s-styled drums and warm soulful melodics. "Low End Massacre" meanwhile gets choppy in the edit and makes a devilishly good job of riding the samples.

Review: Stockholm's Markus Enochson is at the cutting edge of an ever evolving new form of soul music. He has previously released on Compost and Fabric as well as the Louie Vega and Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez New Jersey house label Masters At Work. "For You To See" is his powerfully fresh sounding new 12" brought to you by Sonar Kollektiv. Enochson already had one solo 12" "Got To Let You Know" a couple of years ago on Berlin label Sonar Kollektiv plus a cracking track "Club Possible" on the last Sonar Kollektiv compilation CD. The track takes off seconds after the track start. With his fusion style, Enochson's finely honed production skills somehow allow him to create a seamless fusion of Latin percussion, acid bass grooves and soul vocals. "People Get Ready It's Time For A Change" comes the call from guest vocalist Masaya who co-wrote the "Club Possible" track, and really puts his all into this song. Once you hear Masaya's powerful soul voice sing the line "There's A Time And Place For Everything", you know he's right. Tiger Stripes is fellow Swede Mikael Nordgren. His mix of "For You To See" gives the whole thing more of a trance-house feel. But the delay affected vocals means the track retains the soul vibe while certainly living up to its "dub mix" name. Nordgren's track "Amphytrion" even featured on Carl Craig's Fabric mix (Fabric 49) so one can expect Tiger Stripes to come up with something dance-floor friendly, which is exactly what he delivers. With the Tiger Stripes vocal mix on the B-side Mikael Nordgren takes "For You To See" even further down the house path. The vocal mix is the second or two superb mixes from Tiger Stripes and rounds off a quality 12" nicely.

Review: For those who've yet to check out his productions, Envee is regarded as Poland's number one producer of underground dance music with soul. This EP sees his make his belated bow on soulful dance music institution Local Talk, with a little help from legendary UKG producer (and all-round studio don) Zed Bias. There are two Envee originals on show: 'Sum Luv', a gorgeous, sun-splashed, modern soul-meets-slow house head-nodder smothered in organic instrumentation and eyes-closed female vocals, and the jazz-funk-flavoured broken beat swell of 'Styrax'. Both are remixed in a club-ready style by Zed Bias. His wobbly, sub-bass-sporting two-step take on 'Sum Luv' is simply sublime, while his similarly UKG-powered take on 'Styrax' recalls the soulful jazziness of his Phuturistix project.

Review: Ten Lovers Music hit their quarter century of releases with a various artist compilation they are calling 'Best Of.' They're not wrong to be fair, with a magnificent 11 minute spiritual house workout from Erik Escobar kicking things off. It's a hard act to follow but Cormac Fulton does so by sinking you down into a lush, jazz-licked groove with swirling and romantic pianos. Lorenzo Dewberry rolls out the cosmic house grooves for a life-affirming trip to the stars and Gee W's 'MarshMellow' keeps it classy with plenty of soft tones, warm chords and seductive sax lines.

Review: We're quite into the idea of waking up in the morning, coming over to the Juno HQ and listening to a new release by a new artist on a new label. Mystery man Tom Esselle inaugurates the newly formed Wholemeal Music with three cuts spanning house and broken beat, all salted and peppered with the right measurements of bass. "Until She Spoke" is a stepping percussive lick with gorgeous bundles of organic drum breaks and funky bass tones, whereas "Garibaldi" is a lil' moodier and reminiscent of a Theo Parrish kind of MPC jam. Lastly, the West Norwood Cassette Library man dem come in strong with a remix of "Garibaldi", transforming the original from nasty to utterly vicious thanks to grittier drums and a noticeably fatter bassline.
