  4. Sasha Makin & Suntetic - "Drumatik" (7:23)
Review: The Manuscript mission rolls on unabated as the Ukranian label pairs long lost deep house gems with more contemporary productions. Slam Mode's "Morning Side Dr" is a gorgeous cut laden with plush synth tones to melt the hardest of dancers, while Dennis DeSantis' "Leisure" feeds touches of EBM into a mellow, dubby construction that spans styles with ease. Label boss Vincent Inc joins up with Jon Da Silva for "Thinkin About U", which Questionmarq turns into a delightfully quirky remix before Sasha Makin and Suntetic round the EP off with the epic "Drumatik".

Sev Was Here: Part Two (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SA 008. Rel: 25 Mar 19
  1. Your Lover (7:04)
  2. Rollercoaster (5:28)
  3. Birds & Bee’s (7:04)
  4. Cupid (6:10)
Review: Seven Davis Jr continues exploring his sound via his own Secret Angels label, unfettered by external input and able to present his creative vision as he sees fit. He's in club mode on this second instalment of his "Sev Was Here" series, but this time round it's not quite as edgy as its predecessor. Davis Jr's vocals are out front, dealing with matters of the heart over those crucial, distinctive deep house bumps. "Your Lover" is a snappy, sexy number that works around an addictive, looped up hook, while "Rollercoaster" takes things a little more jacking. "Birds & Bee's" keeps the percussive pressure up, before the husky vocals come back in full force on killer closer "Cupid."

Needs 001 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: NNFP 001. Rel: 27 Nov 17
  1. Hubie Davison - "I Know" (7:04)
  2. Johannes Albert - "Vigilia" (4:35)
  3. DJ Swagger - "21st Century Slow Jam" (5:40)
  4. Bobby Pleasure - "Cloudspotting" (7:34)
Review: Needs (not-for-profit) is a new label that aims to raise awareness about different issues within society with each release. Their first offering highlights the importance of mental wellbeing, with all profits being donated to mental health charity Mind, and calls upon a strong cast of deep house producers to impart the kind of Smallville-friendly sounds that discerning heads should snap up in a heartbeat. Hubie Davison's "I Know" is a melancholic affair with heart-nagging strings, while Johannes Albert injects a little spice into proceedings with a choice breakbeat and some excellent bird song on "Vigilia". DJ Swagger's "21st Century Slow Jam" is a peppy little shuffler with warm acidic bass and a kick ass swing in the beat, and then Bobby Pleasure finishes the record off with the wistful but tech-edged "Cloudspotting".

The Pele Release (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ROTH 14. Rel: 10 Oct 17
  1. Cobble Jam
  2. Woman For A Day
  3. Woman For A Day (Clandestino Dessert Trance remix)
Review: We have been patiently waiting for Pele to crop up on a release from the footy mad Rothmans, and what a time to play that card! Rothmans is back once again with his Aussie teammate Dawn Again, supported by a first appearance from Leeds legends Clandestino. EP opener 'Cobblejam' is nothing short of first class, a worthy and chugging Italo powerhouse that leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination. The B-side finds us with the strangely named 'Woman For A Day', though there's nothing strange about the track itself, a deep and dark cut that slowly drives forward into the abyss. Finishing off the record is an excellent remix from the lads over at Clandestino, their 'Dessert Trance' vibe brings the record together as sweetly as Pele brought together that 1970 World Cup Winning team.

  8. Isoke - "Soul Glo" (3:10)
  9. Damon Lamar - "Bermuda Triangle" (7:02)
  10. Chicago Skyway - "Edged Out" (6:04)
Review: Perpetual Rhythms is already well-regarded as a bastion of quality amongst contemporary Chicago house labels, and now they've downright sealed the deal with this mammoth compilation from a stellar cast of local cats. There's too many to all list in detail here, so focusing on the highlights, Dcee leads things in with the tumbling cosmic jazz leanings of "Suavecito," Hakim Murphy teases with a spacious and daring exploration in the liminal zone between ambient and house, and Obsolete Music Technology gets invigorating with the bouncy "High Top Fade." Those tracks alone are enough to deserve your hard earned, but there's reams of other excellent forward-facing Windy City jams to sink your teeth into.

Opus Incertum 1 (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HPLS 004.1. Rel: 29 Oct 18
  1. Opus Incertum (2:39)
  2. Te Lubesc (5:54)
  3. The Age Of Solon (with Planet X) (4:28)
  4. Melancholic Arithmetic (5:58)
  5. LXIX (4:07)
Review: Hamid's HPLS label has been strangely quiet this year, so it's welcome news to see one of the most intriguing operators on the outer reaches of the minimal house scene back in action with a new talent to share with the world. DCHA-DCHA makes a bold arrival with a two-pronged release comprising of ten tracks in total. On this first part of Opus Incertum, the title track makes a bold statement of intent with its low slung groove carrying all kinds of splaying, splashing and otherwise spaced out sonic trysts. There's a more discernible strut to "Te Lubesc," while "The Age Of Solon" invites Planet X into the mix for a spaced out slice of machine boogie. With the abundance of ideas spilling out of part one, it promises a lot for part two to follow.

  3. GalerienPlatz (4:34)
  4. The Rehersal Of Life (with Baby Vulture) (5:08)
  5. Rhomboids Funk (5:28)
Review: With Hamid's HPLS label reigniting with the fresh, untethered sounds of DCHA-DCHA, we arrive at the second instalment of Opus Incertum already expecting some wild sounds. Fortunately label and artist don't disappoint, and we dive straight in with the unhinged aqua-industro-funk of "Morning Mimosa." That's swiftly followed up by "AGLS," which keeps the vibe liquid while welcoming a richer variety of marine life into the studio. "GalerianPlatz" makes the leap towards electro, with the surrealism tap still pouring wonderfully unexpected colours, tones and textures into the mix. At every turn this record, like its part one counterpart, surprises and delights with its original approaches.

Good Day Bad Day EP (140 gram vinyl 12" limited to 220 copies)
Cat: GV 006. Rel: 28 Nov 16
  1. Derp Journal (6:03)
  2. Bogart Space (6:41)
  3. Good Day Bad Day (7:02)
  4. Flashmelo (7:07)
Review: Long time minimal techno pusher Franklin De Costa steps up to Jersey City label Green Village to thrown down a ruckus with four serious cuts of advanced house and techno. "Derp Journal" may be flippant in name, but the bassline it packs is not to be trifled with, nor the edgy drums and lashings of reverb. "Bogart Space" is a more house-minded affair, but it's still reaching to a contemplative space using unfamiliar sounds. "Good Day Bad Day" gets into a cyclical, psychedelic mood thanks to a trippy synth circling overhead, but then the EP gets dealt a tough finishing blow by the cranked up hustle of "Flashmelo", coming on like a crunchy mid 00s minimal jam of the highest order.

Yebo (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SMS 001. Rel: 11 Sep 17
  1. Yebo (7:23)
  2. Mantekilla (7:29)
Review: De Gama has previously proven to be a master of dancefloor-focused musical fusion, delivering a string of singles that gleefully mine a variety of rhythmic styles from around the World for inspiration (most notably the polyrhythms of Africa and South America). He's at it again here, with flipside "Mantekilla" brilliantly joining the dots between dusty, horn-heavy Afrobeat and rolling deep house. While impressive, it's A-side "Yebo" - a heavy chunk of house-tempo dancefloor dub with clear Afrobeat influences - that's really floating our boat. Either way, it's another predictably strong 12" from the experienced producer.

Funktastic EP (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SMS 004. Rel: 23 Apr 18
  1. Star Buk (9:38)
  2. Son Of Slave (7:42)
  3. 1972 (7:08)
Review: Following fine scalpel-focused outings from LTJ and Les Inferno, many of many aliases Stefano De Gama returns to Samosa with a trio of subtly tooled-up disco edits. A-side "Son of Slave" sees him join together bits of soulful disco-era classics "Slide" and "Son of Slide" to form a tasty new whole. While heavily compressed and noticeably chunkier than either of the original tracks, De Gama's version is loose enough to please those who think edits should merely be DJ-friendly re-arrangements. Turn to the flipside for the lolloping, low-slung Afro-funk goodness of "1972" and the throbbing peak-time disco celebration of filter-sporting closer "Star Buk". This too boasts booming drums and bass, but also enough musical looseness to avoid the usual disco-house pitfalls.

  1. Phason Jazz (7:59)
  2. Mr Dewey D (6:35)
  3. Rhythmic Soundscapes (5:57)
Review: Spanish hi-tech soul maestro Eduardo De La Calle on the true home of it: Planet E - and it's about friggin' time if we do say so! Over the last several years, the Madrid native has respectfully borrowed from the traditions of first and second wave Motor City sounds, but he undeniably carved his own path via his respected Analog Solutions imprint. The Icosahedrite EP features three life affirming explorations in techno-soul. From the the galaxian Jupiter jazz of the A side, through to the classic funked up futurism that pays homage to greats like Transmat and Metroplex like on "Mr Dewey D". There is also the more powerful and straight ahead functionalism of "Rhythmic Soundscapes" which is just as heads down and DJ ergonomic as his aforementioned AS material. This follows up some great releases by him in 2017, on the likes of Anemone, Forbidden Colors and Monogram Systems.
