Sunday Avuncular
Cat: 2043 BLACK. Rel: 10 May 18
Sunday Avuncular (7:56)
Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone (6:14)
Mononymous Persons (5:37)
Review: Tathan, Mensah and Dego get brow deep in bruk science once again with three supreme grooves. "Sunday Avuncular" is a rampant fire that's sparked with minimal elements but suddenly whips up into a full uptempo storm. "Bauxite, Gypsum & Limestone" is the smooth talker of the set with its soulful boogie tones and a momentum that gets more and more direct as the track develops. Finally "Mononymous Persons" concludes this special 12" with a staccato beat and groove so wet 2000 Black should consider selling special branded towels. Exceptional.

Make It Hard

Make It Hard (5:37)
Counter Attack (5:08)
Steady Jam (6:47)
Review: Given the infrequency of their releases these days, any new 12" from Dego, Akwasi Mensah and Kaidi Tatham's 2000 Black project is cause for celebration. "Make It Hard", their first collaborative missive of note since 2008's A Next Set of Rockers on Third Ear, is predictably. The title track itself is killer; a classic, dancefloor-friendly broken beat roller complete with dense, Latin-tinged percussion and loads of brilliant synth touches from Tatham. It's the kind of record that would be been massive at the turn of the millennium. Even now, it should be. The B-sides are pretty tasty too, with some jazzier, deeper bruk in the shape of "Counter Attack", and a dash of sensual, Herbie Hancock does deep house niceness ("Steady Jam").

Soursop & Mango (7:28)
Straight Forward Side Steps (4:36)
Review: The band 2000 Black, who include 4Hero icon Dego among their number, are masters of the broken beat scene, leaders amongst men who whether working alone or with others are always in top form. This two track outing kicks off with 'Soursop & Mango', a bristling, bustling mix of raw drums and bursts of cosmic synth energy that radiates soul, all with neat guitar riffs stitched into the mix. 'Straight Forward Side Steps' is a dusty jam with lovely scruffy claps and much more well defined synth lines adding colour and soul.

Tastes Like Freedom (Chaos In The CBD remix) (5:43)
Tastes Like Freedom (Tornado Wallace Red Face remix) (8:21)
Tastes Like Freedom (Yu Su Midnight Blossom remix) (4:45)
Review: This is a genuinely excellent remix package, with a quartet of hugely talented artists taking it in turns to provide interesting, mostly floor-friendly revisions of 30/70's warming, jazz-funk-meets-soul jam 'Tastes Like Freedom'. Chaos in the CBD steps up first, re-imagining the track as a jazzy slab of sun-kissed electro bliss, before Carista smothers the band's original drums in moody, foreboding chords, psychedelic acid lines and oodles of delay and reverb. Tornado Wallace channels the spirit of Laurent Garnier's 'Man With The Red Face' - and the St Germain material that the French DJ championed on his F Communications label - on a superb, slow-building deep house anthem in the making, while Yu Su's EP-ending 'Midnight Blossom' remix is a warming, intoxicating downtempo delight.

Smooth Tutors - "Rhododendron"
Review: Ooh... Only 350 of these hand numbered doozies are being pressed with no digital versions and a three colour hand-stencilled sleeve. Talk about hot property! Naturally the content is exemplary. A classic east-meets-west scenario: Japan's 9DW shows off his slinky jazz boogie side and more mischievous Italo side with "Bobby's Jam" and "Funky Magician" respectively. Meanwhile on the B Pittsburgh live fusionists get loose with a Pat Metheny style jazz session ("Groovejam 1.6") and a freaky drum-supported bed of Rhodes and crisp clean guitars ("Rhododendron").

Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

Ostia 1982 (5:54)
Traffic Jam (4:09)
Foresta (4:17)
Review: Ad Bourke and Rotla are Italy's answer to Floating Points and the rest of the nu-school, nu-jazz crew. The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

Dread At The Controls
Review: Adesse Versions' second release combines a touch of Baile Funk with some classic Balearic samples, a touch of Dance Mania and deep, liquid house pads from the heart of Detroit. This can mostly be said for the A-side's "Color Talkin", while there's a stripped back alternative in "Drums Talkin". Not content with the one alternative there's a drum machine heavy rework of both tunes in "Leaving The '90s" while there's argument to be had that "Dread At The Controls" is a Jamaican riddim version made for a hot summer's dancefloor.

Reflect & Heal (5:03)
Review: New year, new white label vinyl that you need in your life. This one comes from Adam "Admin" Wickens who is a lovely chap and fine DJ and producer who we havent heard from for a while. In the past he has impressed on Kolour Limited and Banoffee Pies and now goes deep across a pair of jazz tinged deep house gems. 'Step Into Light' has a louche beat and piano lounge chords over the top of the shakers, dusty hits and mellifluous pads. 'Reflect & Heal' then speed sup little but is just as soft, cuddly, and richly melodic for those late night sessions.

Boss Nova's Second Pass
Review: Occupying a musical universe several thousand miles apart from the k'ed up antics of populist deep house imprints, Aybee's Deepblak imprint is single minded in its boundary pushing approach - with Afrikan Science's latest offering a near perfect example of the Deepblak ethos. The Boss Nova's Second Pass EP reworks the rhythmic template of the Brazilian style of music in dizzying, off kilter fashion flushing the surrounds with instantly recognisable themes of afro-futurism drenched with a uniquely soulful touch. The ease with which Afrikan Sciences weaves murky textures with stuttering otherworldly rhythmic templates and the distant desperate harmonics of a chain gang on "Hard Driving Man Driven Offcourse" couldn't really be replicated by anyone outside the Deepblak community. Elsewhere the unpronounceable "Lucjh" captivates with it's locked groove beatdown poise while the title track is the nearest thing to accessibility on an EP that demands your full attention.

Run The Sun (7:59)
Lunar (8:17)
Review: Lithuanian drummer Marijus Aleksa is cutting his teeth into house and tech with this solo debut via the YAM Recordings imprint, out of London, after having come to prominence thanks to his involvement in various groups, namely Contra Jazz, Mock?no Nuclear and Saga. As such, these four tracks present a delightfully jazzy strain of house music, starting with the electro-minded groove of "Time Blur" and followed closely by the more bumpy, more jovial sounds of "Mon Mon". Over on the flip, "Run The Sun" breaks the groove and dissipates into a much more loungy sort of flex, full of haze and mystery, while "Lunar" picks up the tempo and launches a minimalistic, drum-led pseudo-house rhythm with a distinctly organic aesthetic.

Review: Just a year shy of 20 years old, "Asiko (In A Silent Mix)" from Tony Allen's perennial Black Voices album enjoys a timely revision as part of Dekmantel's 10 year anniversary celebrations. This one comes from Motor City Drum Ensemble who maintains the dubby washes and pure spaciousness of Allen's original while refocussing the drums for more of a deeper dancefloor drive. Not quite as extensive as Villalobos's half hour remix but sometimes is a sweet seven minutes is the perfect punch. Jump on this.

Open Your Head (5:58)
EEYE (5:01)
Common (5:30)
People, Places, Things In Spaces (6:48)
Review: Take a listen to the four cuts that make up Jackson Almond's WotNot Music debut, "Open Your Head", and you'll hear a myriad of influences and musical reference points. That the DJ/producer has managed to get them to compliment each other is particularly impressive. Check, for example, the jaunty U.S garage/jazz-funk/broken beat/Afro-house fusion of "EEYE", for starters, or the sparkling opener "Open Your Head", where glistening guitars and marimba style melodies ride a rubbery synth bassline and rich, life-affirming chords. Almond's love of layered percussion is once again evident on the piano-sporting, sun-kissed deep house shuffle of "Common", while "People, Places, Things in Spaces" sees him pepper a jazzy, off-kilter deep house groove with the kind of spacey jazz-funk synths that were once a hallmark of Herbie Hancock albums.

My Vision
Review: Sonar Kollective deliver two massive club tunes from Innervisions stars Âme and Japanese newcomers Agora Rhythm. As one of the biggest newcomers of 2005, headlining last year's Top Tens in both Debug and Groove magazines with their mighty 'Rej', Âme pitch down their tempo for this exclusive new track named 'Excelsior' and prove that they have more than peaktime qualities. Featuring an excerpt of Clara Hill's voice from her last album 'Restless Times', the two sympathetic guys from Karlsruhe, Germany fuse different ingredients to form an astonishing hypnotic journey. Tokyo-based duo Agora Rhythm already received big props from Innervisions artists like Alex From Tokyo and DJ Dixon, who immediately created one of his famous edits that usually never leave his CDDJ cases but this time decided to share it. Percussion coupled with an infectious groove and a moving bassline make this a sure shot, already tried and tested by the usual suspects.

Review: Some 18 months after it appeared on Amp Fiddler's ace "Amp Dog Knights" LP, "Keep Coming" is given the remix treatment by a quartet of hugely talented producers. The headline rework comes from Ninja Tune signee Jayda G, whose effortlessly soulful version not only makes great use of the Detroit veteran's brilliant vocals and keys, but also flits between smoky deep house and sweaty, percussive madness. Elsewhere, Jahn Cloud and Meftah offer up some sweet post R&B beats, Julian Dyne re-casts it as a Latin-tinged chunk of beatdown brilliance and Brenk Sinatra does his best impression of Motor City beat-makers Platinum Pied Pipers.

Review: Oh my Lord, it's a new Mahogani twelve inch which has taken us by complete surprise! Detroit's Amp Fiddler hasn't appeared on KDJ's imprint in a while, but the man is never forgotten; we know just how important he is to the label and scene, so this actually feels like a return to normality for us. "So Sweet" is remixed twice: first up, the legendary Louie Vega reframes it into a majestic slice of soulful house for the late night hours, while Waajeed drops a supremely funky and viciously seductive soul monster that easily makes for the sexiest tune available on our charts right now! There's an instrumental on the back of it, too!

The first is a slow disco mix of The Ananda Project's 'Cascades Of Colour' which is lush, low riding and built on loopy drums with silky synths that are finished with some sprinkles of cosmic melody up top. Sublime. Blaze's 'We Are One' then gets a special Fusion Funk Re-Groove mix which has more astral synth work ringing out from a tight and funk arrangement with lush bass lines and nice organic drums.

Take Off
Review: Andres has become one of Detroit house music's most celebrated producers in the last decade, but as any deep house nerd will tell you, he's been serving up superb singles and albums since the late 1990s. Out in the Open, which here gets the reissue treatment for the first times, dates from 2002 and is every bit as good as you'd expect. A-side 'You'll Be The One' is a great example of his trademark dusty, sample-heavy and loop-driven style, with crackling extracts from all manner of soul and jazz-funk cuts being melded into a hazy, quietly soulful deep house treat. The even deeper and dustier, MPC house jam 'Is It Cool' kicks-off side B, before the Detroiter goes all Moodymann on the impeccable, solo-laden 'Take Off'. A genuine must-have!

Review: Oooh! Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You" definitely belongs in the canon of all time modern soul classics. Taken from her 2001 second album Mahogany Soul, the Swizz Beats produced track made optimum usage of an O' Jays sample and was instrumental in that LP going gold and propelling the former D'Angelo collaborator to stardom. It also inspired countless official and under the counter remixes with Blaze's perhaps the most recognisable. So yes this reissue on 7" from Outta Sight is worthy if you don't have the original in your collection and features a housed up remix from Hex Hector on the flip.

Only one track was ever released on a limited label promo, "Wondering". World Building's Ari Goldman, who previously put out a compilation of Marshall's work as Dreamscape, is a fan and has decided to rescue it from obscurity via this single-sided 12". The track itself is hard to accurately pigeonhole, combining as it does dense, carnival style drums, female scat vocals, warm bass, dreamy deep house chords and synthesizer flourishes reminiscent of early '80s jazz-funk. Either way, it's a sunny and groovy chunk of obscure house positivity that's well worth a place in your collection.
