Review: Denzel Curry and GRAMMY nominated contemporary jazz great Robert Glasper performed a special live show in the Leimert Park neighbourhood of Los Angeles back in autumn of 2020. This special 7" picture disc features live audio of that set as part of this year's Record Store Day celebrations. 'So Incredible Pkg' is has swirling synth lines drifting up into the air , with wooden percussion and gentle beats accompanying Curry's confrontational vocal work. He is just as amped up while performing over the more laid back and deep cut 'This Changes Everything.'

Review: A couple of straight-up hip-hop legends are brought together on this new one from the Originals label, which deals in classics of the genre in 7" format. Q-Tip's truly sone cold 'Breathe & Stop' is up first with its wigging basslines and crispy drum breaks The bars up top are smooth as you like and oft-sampled. Flip it over for the Redman joint 'Smash Sumthin'' with its splashy cymbals and hard-hitting drums underpinned by menacing bass and crowds of 'murder.' Delightfully dark and both well worth having in the collection in this format.

Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from the 1995 hip hop classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie party-starting floor-heater "Superstitioun". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Hip Hop vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Wonderful jam.

Again here it digs into the vast annals of hip-hop history to come up with some still relevant gems in the form of Rakim and DJ Premier's staple 'It's Been a Long Time.' It is a classic boom-bap joint with lush strings and horns, some old-school scratching and cool bars. As walls, the label serves it up alongside the original sample source on the flip which is Cecil Holmes's languid soul slow burner 'Call Me, Come Back Home'. Review: Bump'n'Grind has served up some serious heat across its first few 7"s and for this new one it taps into the fertile ground where hip-hop, funk, r&b, soul and boogie all intersect. The tunes are lovely and lo-fi with roughhewn analogue edges and a dusty vibe that is immediately appealing. Reggie B is the man behind them and first up he says 'Get Some Love' feat LeeLee A Stanwyck & Marcus Machado - its rich in dazzling chords and Prince style funk with catchy as hell vocals. Review: The production pair of Tuure Tammi and Juha Sarkkola hail from Hameenlinna, Finland and first came together to record as The Blassics in 2010. Initially it was an instrumental funk project that looked to record collecting, sampling and deejaying for inspiration and then ended up as a six-piece live band in 2013. Here they appear on the flip of this 7" from Odd Funk with 'I Wanna Show A Lil Trick', and they are also involved in the making of A-side cut 'Fankkisafka', which has Rosteri, a Finnish rap group from Kuopio, serving up the bars.

Review: DJ Soopasoul's Soopasoul label doesn't shy away from offering up big, classic mash-ups. But they are all so well executed that they prove to be frankly irresistible despite being so well worn. Here we get a Raw mix & bonus beats version of hip-hop giants RUN DMC's Peter Piper. It's heavy on the bells, the beats are razor sharp and the bars hit hard as a train. Flip it over and you get a breaks mix & acappella version that is packed with horns and takes on a more 60s-leaning hard-edged funk style.
