Review: Last time we heard Antony Mills and Freddie Cruger together as Wildcookie, Obama was still in his first presidential term, and the world was just that little bit simpler. Since then, however, the Homegrown label has matured and developed into the fine beast that it is now, and the duo's style is most certainly a darker shade of grey. They haven't lost their seductive, funky style, though, and the opening "What Would" is a delicious mix of anything remotely related to soul, while "Back Door" delivers a fine, electronic r&b slow-jam, and "Fly Is Now" is what soul sounds like on Saturn. This has to be one of the nuttiest, most diverse soul releases that will grace 2017, and the title track "Slave Music" will undoubtedly be imprinted in your mind upon first listen.

Review: Redveil aka Marcus Morton is an up-and-coming American MC and rapper and last year he dropped his Learn 2 Swim album. It became a cult classic almost immediately after release and after two early versions - one purple, one blue - sold out and started fetching high prices, Digger's Factory have got this latest back version out. During the writing of the record, Redveil took inspiration from drill music and local DMV area rappers and cooked up his own take on hip hop and jazz-rap. As well as the great penmanship and wordplay, Morton also took care of the production himself on this one. A fine debut with no doubt much more to come from him in future.

Review: As a powerhouse for new hip-hop, Washington D.C. still stands strong, and it centres on two masterminds known as Raw Poetic and Damu The Fudgemunk. Here the artists present the limited LP version of their latest album, 'Laminated Skies', self-described as a 9 track meander through blossoming feel-good funk, hip hop, chamber music and pop. Review: Jordan Rakei is a real poster boy for the current neo-soul scene. New Zealand-born, Australia-raised artist is hugely popular here in his adopted homeland of the UK, not least because of how much great music he puts out at a regular rate. This is his fourth album in five years - third on Ninja Tune - and he's also turned out a lush entry into the Late Night Tales series. His soulful tones remain a delight on these tracks, which feature elements of dub, house, and dub as well as his aching vocals and fine songwriting. The mood is the most vulnerable yet as a result of things he learnt about himself during therapy over the last two years. Dive in deep.

Review: RZA has become something of a wise old social media elder who often shares tips for a mindful and meditative life. He is of course also the leader of the iconic hip-hop band Wu-Tang Clang and back in 1998 he debuted his Bobby Digital alter ego on the Bobby Digital In Stereo album. Now it's back with another record under the same name. Bobby Digital and the Pit of Snakes is a soundtrack written for an upcoming graphic novel and was produced by DJ Scratch. It is musically diverse with plenty of hip hop, orchestral soundscapes, playful beats, and plenty of great bars and insightful lyricism.

Review: Adrian Younge and A Tribe Called Quest man Ali Shaheed Muhammad's recently released "Jazz Is Dead" album had the feel of a landmark set: a collection of inspired, all-star workouts that combined live, hip-hop style beats with the effervescent musicality of soundtrack jazz, soul, jazz-funk and Latin jazz. This speedy sequel flips the script, stripping back the guest list to a single guest collaborator: jazz-funk and fusion legend Roy Ayers. From start to finish, the set bristles with sweet female group vocals, mazy Vibraphone solos, ultra-warm electric piano, hybrid hip-hop/jazz-funk beats, and Ayers' effortless musical positivity. While nowhere near as eclectic as its predecessor, "Jazz Is 2" is arguably an even more coherent and enjoyable album - and that's saying something.

A Report To The Shareholders/Kill Your Masters
Review: Hip-hop supergroup Run The Jewels is comprised of Brooklyn-based rapper-producer El-P and Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike. They have put pout a wealth of sensibly titled album that remain firm favourers and always sell out. The latest to be reissued is Run The Jewels 3 on this limited edition and coloured vinyl. This one mixes sup the urban grime and decay of New York city with bouncing Southern vibes to pave a new path for hip hop. The tracks remain hard-edged and direct, with cacophonous synths and oversized hits making each track an attention grabber.

Review: Jameszoo and Niels Broos are Rolrolrol and Music is their first album. They describe it as "a puttylike exercise in pop, modern jazz and electronica" and it builds on many years of working together on the likes of Brainfeeder and Alpha Pup. The whole thing is doused in vivid and vivacious synth work that brings life and colour to every groove, whether a broken beat or a future hip-hop workout, an experimental cosmic house cut or an infectious bit of boogie. Amongst the magnificent melodies are guests like Jamie Woon who bring real soul to 'Surprise', and it all makes for a playful but triumphant record of brain-cleansing electronic sound.

Review: Harlem's renowned THC fanatic Sean Pompey aka 10-year hip hop veteran Smoke DZA teamed up with LA producer Real Bad Man for this superb collaborative album back at the start of the year. It was inspired by the fact that weed became legal to be sold on the West Coast and so comes with bars that are heavily steeped in the spirit of the bud. Signature Real Bad Man beats are carriages for silky bars from DZA while plenty of solid guest appearances bolster the already fine collection of tunes. Flee Lord, NymLo and Knowledge The Pirate are amongst those contributing and it is so good to finally have these available on wax.

Review: Los Angeles MC T.F has a bona-fide South Central gangster mindset but he also has all the technical mic skills of a classic New York MC. He first made waves back in 2016 with a feature on 'Tookie Knows II' by ScHoolboy Q and has since drop some classic West Coast sounds but here he works with Lord Mobb producer Mephux as well as the legendary Roc Marciano for a fresh new record that dives deep into his own hood. It tells stories of how and what shaped him with real narrative. It tells the tale of a man proud to have come through the violence and poverty of it all and now be making moves on the world stage.

Review: This is a new, short and seriously sweet album from Oh No - Madlib's bother - who is famed for being an innovator and mad talented when it comes to the art of sampling as well as rapping and beat making. He has a rich history of exploring a wide world of source material and here it is jazz funk great Roy Ayers in the spotlight. This superb instrumental collection deconstructs the work of iconic vibraphonist and is split into two halves each with its own vibe and all constructed from the early jazz-centric realm. Good Vibes is all about light and vibrant layers beaming in the sun and Bad Vibes is more dark and murky for angrier times.

Review: Ree-Vo is a powerhouse duo consisting of T. Relly and Andy Spaceland who have carried on the Brsotil trip hop legacy many ears after The Wild Bunch. All Welcome On Planet Ree Vo/Dial R For Ree-Vo is a new eight-track record of fine originals that also features remixes by The Bug, Dalek (Will Brooks), Surgeon and Rob Smith. These are glitchy sounds with paranoid modern production, fixing synths and hefty bass dollops beneath most cuts as well as observational bars and plenty of edgy energy.

Review: Running The Way is a new album from six skilled instrumentalists and one talented mic man in MC Days aka RacecaR. They fuse trumpets, sax, keys, drums, bass and guitar into a fresh mix of hip hop and jazz, Afrobeat, funk and soul into a compelling record that harks back to a 90s heyday while also sounding thoroughly contemporary. Some cuts rolls deep like the lazy drums and nagging horns of 'Gas' while others are more upbeat steppers such as 'The Big Hustle'. Lively, innovative and powered by a compelling groove, this is a very tidy new record for fusion fans.

Review: This collection of ten very classy sounding Balearic pop songs actually consists of unreleased material from 1989-1991, a fact you'd never have guessed from merely listening to it. Brenda is a UK based singer and producer, and during the 80s frontperson of Brenda and the Beachballs (whose 'Theme From A Tall Dark Stranger' makes a return in a new form here), and the palate of influences does revolve around the best the decade had to offer - Grace Jones, ZTT, Roxanne Shante and early St Etienne are all echoed - plus a touch of the plundering DIY sample spirit (see 'Tequila Sam') that also powered that era. Exquisite listening that doesn't let its sophistication distract from a gentle sense if adventure and charm.

Review: The Madlib Invazion Music Library Series clocks up its eighth entry here and the honour is given to drummer Karriem Riggins who offers up To The Jungle. He is someone who can play the sticks with real conviction and shows that here across another superb album in this series. It really makes use of the chance given to him to stretch himself and create the sort of music he might not dare to otherwise. It has all been created with a view to be ing given one-stop clearance for use in mim and TV and plenty of this one surely will because it is so evocative.

Review: Undoubtedly, one of the most influential groups to emerge from the eighties music scene was Run-DMC. With their bold beats and insightful lyrics delivered through a tag-team style among band members, they revolutionized rap music. Their eponymous album stands as a pinnacle not only for the band but also for the entire genre, boasting timeless singles like 'Rock Box' and the global hit 'King Of Rock'. Remarkably, this album was the first rap full-length to attain Gold status, solidifying their impact. Run-DMC continued their momentum with two subsequent albums, further cementing their status as rap icons.

Review: Following the release of Jim Jarmusch movie Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai in 1999, many hip-hop heads were keen for the RZA's immaculate soundtrack - his first movie score - to get a release. It did, but only in Japan. Finally, the RZA has put that right, and now the soundtrack, which features a number of contributions from the Wu-Tang Clan, is available around the world via this new pressing. Largely warm, light and airy, much of the material mixes traditional instrumentation - electric piano, various Japanese instruments, guitar - with head-nodding hip-hop beats and the kind of obscure, Blaxploitation-era funk samples that have long been a staple of the RZA's work. It's a great set of instrumentals, with just enough forthright vocal cuts to keep things fresh.
