It's Been A Long Time
Cat: 5BB 032. Rel: 20 Feb 24
Rakim - "It's Been A Long Time" (4:00)
Cecil Holmes - "Call Me, Come Back Home" (3:23)
Review: More gold from the always in the know and on point 5 Boroughs label. Again here it digs into the vast annals of hip-hop history to come up with some still relevant gems in the form of Rakim and DJ Premier's staple 'It's Been a Long Time.' It is a classic boom-bap joint with lush strings and horns, some old-school scratching and cool bars. As walls, the label serves it up alongside the original sample source on the flip which is Cecil Holmes's languid soul slow burner 'Call Me, Come Back Home'. These plays shift in quick time so do not snooze if you want a slice.

Get Some Love
Cat: BNG 007. Rel: 28 Sep 23
Get Some Love (feat LeeLee A Stanwyck & Marcus Machado) (4:23)
Find My Way (4:57)
Review: Bump'n'Grind has served up some serious heat across its first few 7"s and for this new one it taps into the fertile ground where hip-hop, funk, r&b, soul and boogie all intersect. The tunes are lovely and lo-fi with roughhewn analogue edges and a dusty vibe that is immediately appealing. Reggie B is the man behind them and first up he says 'Get Some Love' feat LeeLee A Stanwyck & Marcus Machado - its rich in dazzling chords and Prince style funk with catchy as hell vocals. 'Find My Way' is a hip hop beatdown with plenty of swagger and sugary synths.

Again & Again (DJ Spinna remixes)

Again & Again (DJ Spinna Galatic Soul remix) (7:52)
Again & Again (DJ Spinna Galatic Soul instrumental) (7:51)
Say So (DJ Spinna Galatic Funk remix) (6:10)
Say So (DJ Spinna Galatic Funk instrumental) (6:09)
Review: The don that is DJ Spinna knows how to liven up any party with his sumptuous and sensuous sounds, whatever sub-genre they come from. Here he offers up four different versions of two tracks originally by Carmen Rodgers. First is 'Again & Again' (DJ Spinna Galatic Soul remix) which is a mix of squelchy cosmic pads and soulful vocals that are removed for the instrumental. The flip features 'Say So' (DJ Spinna Galatic Funk remix) which is slow, full of sensuality and dusty broken beats. Four more gems then, as you would expect.

Rosteri - "Fankkisafka" (feat Soul Valpio) (4:17)
The Blassics - "I Wanna Show A Lil Trick" (3:36)
Review: The production pair of Tuure Tammi and Juha Sarkkola hail from Hameenlinna, Finland and first came together to record as The Blassics in 2010. Initially it was an instrumental funk project that looked to record collecting, sampling and deejaying for inspiration and then ended up as a six-piece live band in 2013. Here they appear on the flip of this 7" from Odd Funk with 'I Wanna Show A Lil Trick', and they are also involved in the making of A-side cut 'Fankkisafka', which has Rosteri, a Finnish rap group from Kuopio, serving up the bars.

Review: This is a new, short and seriously sweet album from Oh No - Madlib's bother - who is famed for being an innovator and mad talented when it comes to the art of sampling as well as rapping and beat making. He has a rich history of exploring a wide world of source material and here it is jazz funk great Roy Ayers in the spotlight. This superb instrumental collection deconstructs the work of iconic vibraphonist and is split into two halves each with its own vibe and all constructed from the early jazz-centric realm. Good Vibes is all about light and vibrant layers beaming in the sun and Bad Vibes is more dark and murky for angrier times.

Review: Redveil aka Marcus Morton is an up-and-coming American MC and rapper and last year he dropped his Learn 2 Swim album. It became a cult classic almost immediately after release and after two early versions - one purple, one blue - sold out and started fetching high prices, Digger's Factory have got this latest back version out. During the writing of the record, Redveil took inspiration from drill music and local DMV area rappers and cooked up his own take on hip hop and jazz-rap. As well as the great penmanship and wordplay, Morton also took care of the production himself on this one. A fine debut with no doubt much more to come from him in future.

Review: The reissue of Pete Rock & CL Smooth's Main Ingredient reminds hip-hop heads what a timeless masterpiece it really is. The record has a sure place in hip-hop history and has since it was originally released in 1994. The album showcases the duo's famous and unparalleled chemistry, with Pete Rock's soulful production and CL Smooth's smooth lyricism blending seamlessly on tracks that continue to resonate with listeners and very much capture the essence of 90s hip-hop while still remaining relevant today. 'Sun Won't Come Out', 'The Main Ingredient', and 'Get On The Mic' all demand to be played loud and proud

Review: Jameszoo and Niels Broos are Rolrolrol and Music is their first album. They describe it as "a puttylike exercise in pop, modern jazz and electronica" and it builds on many years of working together on the likes of Brainfeeder and Alpha Pup. The whole thing is doused in vivid and vivacious synth work that brings life and colour to every groove, whether a broken beat or a future hip-hop workout, an experimental cosmic house cut or an infectious bit of boogie. Amongst the magnificent melodies are guests like Jamie Woon who bring real soul to 'Surprise', and it all makes for a playful but triumphant record of brain-cleansing electronic sound.

Down With The King (5:05)
Come On Everybody (4:35)
Review: Run-DMC's vital Down With The King album is now a hard to believe three decades old and so Get On Down mark the occasion with this special red & clear vinyl 7" real of its title tune for its 30th Anniversary. The album - their sixth at the time - marked a superb comeback for the band having already hit massive sights with the previous platinum album Tougher Than Leather. Gangsta rap had rather pushed the group to the sidelines but this one brought them back to the fore with its catchy melodies and crunchy beats as well as superb bars. On the flip here is the low slung and classic boom-bap sound of 'Come On Everybody.'

Review: Raising Hell was legendary US hip-hop group Run-D.M.C's third studio album and it dropped in May 1986. The one and only Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons produced the album which peaked at three in the Billboard chart and also produced some of the band's biggest ever singles. They are of course 'My Adidas', 'Walk This Way' with Aerosmith', 'You Be Illin'' and 'It's Tricky' and are the sound of this collective at their most potent. Raising Hell is also the name of one of the band's legendary tours back in 1986 and The Apollo 86, a live recording of one of the nights in that run, is one of their best, so why not cop both.

Review: Undoubtedly, one of the most influential groups to emerge from the eighties music scene was Run-DMC. With their bold beats and insightful lyrics delivered through a tag-team style among band members, they revolutionized rap music. Their eponymous album stands as a pinnacle not only for the band but also for the entire genre, boasting timeless singles like 'Rock Box' and the global hit 'King Of Rock'. Remarkably, this album was the first rap full-length to attain Gold status, solidifying their impact. Run-DMC continued their momentum with two subsequent albums, further cementing their status as rap icons.
