Felony (7")
Cat: JAL 328V. Rel: 26 Mar 20
  1. Felony (3:18)
  2. Rile 'Em Up (feat Andy Cooper & Marietta Smith) (3:29)
Review: The Allergies first double A-side of the year is so strong, we reckon it may well be one of their best singles to date. A-side "Felony" is particularly potent: a hybrid Northern/Southern Soul stomper rich in crunchy drums, heavy bass, punchy horns and heart-aching vocal samples lifted from (we think) an obscure soul record. The production is formidably fuzzy, making it sound like something recorded in Detroit or Memphis in the 1960s rather than cooked up in their studio in 2019. Flipside "Rile 'Em Up" is similarly weighty, though this time they're off on a Latin funk tip with a little help from regular rapper Andy Cooper, soul-stress Marietta Smith, saxophonist Mr Woodnote and a handful of killer boogaloo samples.

Cherchez (7" + MP3 download code)
Cat: HR 004. Rel: 13 Mar 20
  1. Cherchez (vocal remix) (4:00)
  2. Cherchez (Le B-Boy) (3:42)
Review: The Altered Tapes crew's sneaky remixes are amongst the finest around, as this latest must-check "45" proves. "Cherchez" has been doing the rounds for a couple of years digitally, so it's great to see it finally land on wax. It's a flip of Ghostface Killah's "Cherchez La Ghost", with the venerable rapper's verses rising above a weighty backing track crafted from hand picked samples of classic funk jams. Weighty and floor-friendly, it's the kind of bootleg revision that's guaranteed to get the party started. "Cherchez La B-Boy" on the flip strips out most of his vocals and instead chooses to base the action around fat funk breakbeats and an even more sizable bassline.

  1. 1 Thing Breaks (instrumental Funk Breaks version) (3:57)
  2. Gotta Work The Funk Breaks (instrumental Breaks version) (3:14)
Review: Super limited colour wax issue with a 45 on a relatively new Stateside label that does what it says on the tin. Big drum breaks that work in their own right in instrumental form for these two massive dancefloor funk breaks soul classics with the debut release for both tracks in a single 7" vinyl format (albeit here in a small run on white wax). Heavy on the drums, heavy on the brass with driving instrumentation to take your dancefloor to B-Boy moves heaven.

  1. Take A Backseat (3:31)
  2. Create The Myth (4:14)
Review: We Keep Shit Dope have indeed done so for a whole 10 releases now. Keeping the quality levels high this time out are collaborative team Baronski and Andy Cooper. One is a vital beat maker from Germany with slick MPC skills, the other is a smooth MC from Long Beach, and together they have served up a hard hitting but modern interpretation of classic boom bap on A side "Take A Backseat" before getting darker and more paranoid on the flip, "Create The Myth", which muses on a surveillance state, dishonesty and other real world topics.

Cat: OC 006. Rel: 05 Feb 20
  1. Straight Jacket (4:10)
  2. Get Funky (3:52)
Review: When it comes to classic hip-hop cuts, the Old Chillin' series of seven-inch singles has you covered. The mysterious crew behind the series has previously offered up gems by Big Daddy Kane, Nas and Cyprus Hill. Here they turn their attention to the bulging back catalogue of New York twosome the Beatnuts. Both tracks are taken from the pair's fine 1994 debut album. A-side "Straight Jacket" is a bona fide NYC hip-hop club classic, with the duo adding tight raps to a drowsy but dancefloor-friendly "Golden era" beat. Flipside "Get Funky" is a little more densely layered and laidback in tone, though it's still lively enough to suggest that it's worthy of regular club spins again.

Crazy In Love (7" 再プレス)
Cat: HOMEHIT 005. Rel: 06 Mar 20
  1. Beyonce - "Crazy In Love" (vocal version) (3:58)
  2. Amarie - "1 Thing" (vocal version) (3:58)
Review: If you went out in the 2000s - particularly to eclectic, open-minded parties such as Manchester's Electric Chair - you'd have found yourself dancing to these two next-level R&B jams rather a lot. It goes without saying that they're both stone cold classics and the kind of brilliantly produced, chart-bothering cuts that are capable of setting any dancefloor alight. Beyonce's Chi-Lites sampling and Jay-Z sporting "Crazy In Love" remains one of her most potent and club-ready cuts, while Amerie's "1 Thing" offers a similar blend of unlikely drum breaks, fuzzy funk samples and a lead vocal that will have you singing along in no time at all.

The BIG Payback: BIG Poppa's Got A Brand New Bag (7" 再プレス) (1 per customer)
Cat: BIG POPPABLACK. Rel: 19 Feb 20
  1. BIG Poppa's Got A Brand New Bag (3:58)
  2. BIG Poppa's Got A Brand New Bag (instrumental) (3:58)
Review: When it comes to mash-ups and unofficial reworks, sometimes the simplest ideas are the ones that make for the most effective versions. That's certainly the case here, as Soul Mates main man Amerigo Gazaway crafts a fresh slab of funk/hip-hop fusion out of three key elements: a legendary Biggie Smalls acapella, sections lifted from James Brown classic "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and his own head-nodding hip-hop beats. There's not much more to it than that, but the resultant cut, "Big Poppa's Got a Brand New Bag", sounds like a guaranteed dancefloor winner. The A-side version is the full vocal take, while the flipside is a Biggie-free instrumental mix.

No Diggity (7" limited to 300 copies 再プレス) (1 per customer)
Cat: HOME HIT 004. Rel: 06 Mar 20
  1. Blackstreet - "No Diggity" (feat Dr Dre) (3:42)
  2. Ginuwine - "Pony" (4:00)
Review: Blackstreet's "No Diggity" is a stone cold hip hop classic. From proper club plays to cheesy parochial nights out, it unites everyone on the dance floor and never fails to become a communal singalong. It sounds as hot now as it ever did and so makes sense for Home Hitters to serve up a new limited pressing. The b-side is from US giant Ginuwine. "Pony" was his debut single co written with Timbaland and Static Major, and it is a deep cut and libidinous tune with obvious sexual metaphors and vocodered vocal samples, a cartoon whistle slide and stop-start rhythm makes it all the more alluring.

Review: Northentic Records welcome back cult UK rapper Blade for a link up with producer Seek The Northerner that delivers messages of gratitude in arresting fashion . The signature boom bap production of Seek underpins the whole a-side, while he also adds his own verse which pays tribute to his collaborative partner here. World Champion turntablist DJ Woody layers in plenty of scratches to add some old school cool and engineering from No Sleep Nigel ensures it all sounds super fresh. It you want it even more direct and raw, the flip side instrumental has you covered.

Cat: 2020 7001. Rel: 10 Feb 20
  1. Powerful (feat Hannah Williams) (3:43)
  2. Sparky Evans (3:18)
Review: To celebrate the dawn of a new decade, Bristolian cut-and-paste maestro Boca 45 has decided to serve up a series of seven-inch singles under a new label, 2020 Donuts (his previous imprint was just called Donuts). A-side "Powerful" is a real treat: an inventive chunk of low-slung, horn-sporting spy-funk goodness topped off with wayward electronic flourishes and a powerful soul vocal by Hannah Williams. Flip-side "Sparky Evans" is a sample-heavy club rocker in the traditional Boca 45 style - all heavy bass, even heavier breakbeats, Sly and the Family Stone style fuck-rock guitars and hip-hop vocal snippets.

  1. James Brown & The Wu Tang Clan - "Sex CREAM" (3:33)
  2. James Brown - "Sex Machine" (dub edit) (3:02)
Review: It would be fair to say that the latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole" edits series is one of the producer's biggest yet. A-side "Sex C.R.E.A.M" is particularly potent, with the mash-up maestro layering the vocals from Wu-Tang Clan classic "C.R.E.A.M" over a chunky beat crafted out of classic James Brown samples. To our ears, it's arguably better than the Wu-Tang original, or at least a little more dancefloor-friendly. Fittingly, Brown gets the treatment on the flip with Soopasoul getting busy with the EQs on a suitably heavy but stripped back "dub edit" of all-time-classic "Sex Machine". While it probably didn't need tampering with, he's done a very good job of delivering a version that successfully takes the track in a different direction.

  1. Royal (2:33)
  2. Get What's Right (3:51)
Review: In our eyes, Children Of Zeus can do no wrong. Then again, they've yet to release a duff record, so it's hardly a controversial opinion. Their latest outing on First Word is another two-track gem. A-side "Royal" is particularly sumptuous, with the Manchester duo delivering a soul slow jam so deep, sugary and musically rich that you might want to take it home to meet your parents right away. Honestly, it's seriously seductive. Flipside "Get What's Right" is a little more hip-hop flavoured (check the crunchy breaks) but every bit as smooth and soulful, with the pair's vocals riding atop a suitably twinkly, late-night musical soundscape.

  2. Hip Hop Saved My Life (Space remix) (4:25)
Review: Australia-based American Ivan "Choi" Khatchoyan made his name as the producer/arranger behind funk band The Traffic. Here he switches focus, joining forces with veteran mic man Guilty Simpson for a club-ready hip-hop outing that's every bit as good as his funk and soul productions. The A-side original version is hazy, hot and heavy, with Simpson's celebratory flows about hip-hop culture rising above a slick, '80s style backing track rich in fuzzy bass, vibrant synthesizer lines, organ stabs and some suitably tight scratches. Over on side B the "Space Remix" sees him re-invent the track as a head-nodding slab of boom-bap deepness for those who fancy lighting up and listening rather than dancing.

  1. Dr Dre - "Deep Cover" (Introducing Snoop Doggy Dogg) (4:00)
  2. Too Short - "Bad Ways" (4:04)
Review: The "West Coast Classics" series has a simple premise. It offers up light-touch re-edits of essential West Coast hip-hop hits from the style's glory years in the 1990s. The latest salvo boasts two must-have cuts. On the A-side you'll find Dr Dre's "Deep Cover", the cut that introduced the world to future star (and now iconic artist) Snoop Dogg. His flows work perfectly over Dre's low-slung beat, which makes great use of smoky instrumental samples from what sounds like the soundtrack of a 1970s spy thriller. Over on the flip you'll find Too Short's lesser-celebrated "Bad Ways", which first surfaced on the long-serving Los Angeles mic man's 1996 album "Gettin' It (Album Number Ten)" and makes use of elements from Parliament/Funkadelic classic "Flashlight".

Dusty Donuts, now five years into their mission to serve up the biggest party breaks and funkiest funk, this time offer the low riding Cali g-funk of "I Get Juiced (Doc Flex & NMX Mix)" which will be familiar to anyone who has heard "I Get Lifted" by Gwen McCrae. 2. Baker Brothers - "Snap Back" (Funky Bijou remix) (5:07)
Review: The latest missive from France's Stereophonk imprint is a heavy double header focused on the production and remix work of cut-and-paste funk and soul heroes Funky Bijou. On side A you'll find a fresh slab of P-funk flavoured B-Boy breaks from the Gallic production twosome that wraps classic early '80s rap samples and excitable synth solos around punchy electro beats and a squidgy synthesizer bassline. On the flip they give their interpretation of the Baker Brothers' 2011 track "Snap Back", re-imagining it as a Clavinet-heavy slab of hazy soul rich in blue-eyed vocals, Funkadelic style synth stabs, squelchy bass and crunchy machine drums.

Review: Given that Gang Starr recently reformed and jazz is now all the rage, it seems fitting that Mr Bongo has decided to reissue the rare 7" version of the group's 1990 masterpiece "Jazz Thing". It's a wholehearted tribute to the greats of jazz - and the role jazz records have in hip-hop's sample culture - that comes in two distinctively different mixes. On the A-side you'll find the "Video Mix", a bouncy and suitably jazzy DJ Premier production that layers Guru's fine rap flows above loose-limbed drums, smoky horn samples and his own super-tight scratches. Turn to side B for the "Movie Mix" - so-called because it was created for a Spike Lee flick - where Guru's vocal rides improvised horns and an entirely different beat crafted from Kool & The Gang samples.

Review: Premier Norwegian rapper Ivan Ave is set to release his long-awaited debut album in April, but before that he serves up this sweet 7". He's established himself in the Soundcloud generation as a man with a distinctive voice and ear for melody. Check "Triple Double Love", where his voice floats smoothly above the beats that lull you into a mellow vibe. "Phone Won't Charge" is a rickety one with lush chords and hits poking through to add bite, while the instrumental versions on the flip are fully laid back and spaced out quality stoner jams. That album can't come fast enough.

Review: The Originals crew kick off their new decade with more red hot funk heat they've got us accustomed to. This time it is jazz-funk great Bob James on the a-side with "Farandole", a classic that has been chopped down the size for this 45 by the crack crew behind DNA. Flip-side "Lions In The Forest" finds DJ Muggs sampling that one and reworking it into a big b-boy tune with rhythms from Planet Asia and a guest spot from B-Real. This is proper heat for the floor that oozes quality.

They layer up jazz-funk drums and synths into lively arrangements that are topped with sick verses from the master and plenty of James Brown ad libs also colour the groove. Review: Galaxy Sound give this 1997 hip hop classic a new twist with some slick jazz stylings. Lil Kim's "Crush On You", is known by all but here it becomes something completely different: a forgotten jazz funk gem, colourful trumpet leads awash with lush drums and timeless soul. The flipside houses a re-edit of Jeff Lorber's "Rain Dance", which is in fact the original source of the samples on Lil Kim's track, and one that has been used on more than 20 other big time tunes. Here it's subtly tweaked but still remains a classic bit of jazz-flecked hip hop with some proper rude vocals.

Review: Canadian/American hip-hop crew Main Source released some sublime music during rap's "golden era", with both of their albums remaining stone cold classics. "Watch Roger Do His Thing" was never quite as successful commercially as its predecessor, "Looking At The Front Door", but is nevertheless a quality bit of conscious rap. For the uninitiated, the 1990 cut is based around loose, slack-tuned drums, weighty bass, jazzy organ flourishes and bass so fat it probably has its own postcode. This edition pairs the superb vocal version with the under-celebrated instrumental, both of which appeared on the song's original single release.

Review: When it comes to West Coast hip-hop classics, there are few more stone cold than N.W.A's Dr Dre-produced 1988 anthem "Straight Outta Compton". Here it gets the Ronnie Razzle re-edit treatment, though the producer has wisely chosen not to tamper with it too much. As with the original version, the beats are fat, the bass fatter and the collective's rap flows delightfully in-your face. Over on side B Above The Law's 1994 gem "Black Superman" gets a similar treatment. Deeper, groovier and more indebted to Los Angeles' rap's G-funk heritage, the track offers a nice counterpoint to the full-throttle dancefloor insanity of NWA's all-time classic.

No Helmet Up Indianola (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: RJEC 00221. Rel: 24 Feb 20
  1. No Helmet Up Indianola (3:22)
  2. One Of A Kind (feat Homeboy Sandman) (3:45)
Review: RJD2 is back on his own Electrical Connections with another hard hitting 7". He's previously been a member of groups such as Soul Position, MHz Legacy, and Icebird but in solo form he's hard to beat. The master of cut and paste hip hop beats recently announced he has a new album on the way but before that these two soulful, moody portraits will keep us entertained. "No Helmet Up Indianola" has psyched out rock riffs over snappy drum work and "One Of A Kind (feat. Homeboy Sandman)" is deeper with smooth flowing MC work.

Slaughterhouse (7" limited to 300 copies) (1 per customer)
Cat: NNR 057. Rel: 27 Feb 20
  1. Slaughterhouse (feat Big Born - vocal) (3:35)
  2. Slaughterhouse (instrumental) (3:53)
Review: Last year TRAMP Records reissued the sole album by the 1994 version of Roy Porter's Sound Machine outfit, an earlier version of which had been active for five years in the 1970s. "Slaughterhouse" is taken from that album, "Generation", and here appears on a seven-inch single for the very first time. In its' A-side vocal mix form, the track is a punchy, horn-heavy chunk of funk that sounds a little like a vintage James Brown record (albeit with a vastly different male lead vocal). The flipside instrumental take is a totally different beast, with waves of horns and elastic slap bass riding the original's killer, JBs-like groove.

Cat: JIM 42. Rel: 28 Mar 20
  1. Let's Ride (Jim Sharp edit)
  2. God Lives Through A Southern Gul (Jim Sharp edit)
Review: When it comes to DJ-friendly reworks, re-edits and mash-ups, few producers can boast quite as strong a track record as Jim Sharp. Here he proves our point with another pair of certified dancefloor heaters. On the A-side he takes his scalpel to Q-Tip's typically jazzy and bass-heavy 1999 hip-hop cut "Ride", adding a little more grunt to the bass and beats whilst retaining the essence of the Tribe Called Quest man's superb original version. On the flip he delivers a radically different revision of Rahzel's "Southern Girl", placing Erykah Badu's superb lead vocal atop an entirely different Tribe Called Quest beat. It turns it into a dusty, jazzy, head-nodding treat.

Children's Story (reissue) (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: GET 7567R. Rel: 23 Mar 20
  1. Children's Story (4:02)
  2. The Moment I Feared (3:34)
Review: According to the oracle that is Whosampled (dot com), Slick Rick's 1988 single "Children's Story" is one of the most sampled hip-hop records of all time. Listening back to this reissue, it's easy to hear why. Based on a killer beat that combines a re-recording of the bassline from Bob James' "Nautilus" with bouncy drums, 8-bit computer game noises and a recurring piano stab, the track shows the British-born rapper storytelling in his uniquely cheeky style. This edition doesn't include the original B-side "Teacher, Teacher" but instead offers another chance to enjoy "The Great Adventures of Slick Rick" album cut "The Moment I Feared", a scratch-happy chunk of on-point 1980s NYC hip-hop that boasts another tall tale from the master of narrative rap.
