Review: Prolific Philly rap eccentric Lynx 196.9 teams up for a first-time collaboration with the un-knock-downable legend Kool Keith for an incendiary new mini-album, 'Bandoleros', a concept piece intended as a modern spaghetti Western soundtrack. The rat-helmeted wordsmith and the surrealist vigilante prove an unsurprisingly wicked combo, as both emcees glide suavely over boom-bap centrepieces sampled from various spaghetti film sources, while detailing the blueprints of their various forthcoming jailbreaks.

Monsters (feat Ceschi & ID Obelus - remix) (4:41)
Monsters (instrumental) (4:14)
Monsters (remix instrumental) (4:50)
Review: MC Homeless and Kool Keith bring totters the old and the new on this fresh collaboration. Homeless is known as a DIY touring god and of course, Kool Keith is a godfather of the weirder end of rap with a fine CV. Their work gets pressed up to eco-coloured vinyl which is made from recycled chips so results in some suitably weird wax patterns. In original form, 'Monsters' has booming low ends and menacing bass with purposeful bars and freaky synth lines that hark back to early dubstep. Ceschi and Id Obelus then feature on a remix by Noblonski that gets even more freaky. Instrumentals of each are on the flip.

London Is The Place (limited 12")
Cat: OTR 020. Rel: 28 Jun 23
London Is The Place (4:06)
London Is The Place (feat Kaidi Tatham) (4:12)
London Is The Place (Kool Jazz mix) (3:33)
Review: This is a rather epic transatlantic hook up between hip-hop legend and Ultramagnetic MC Kool Keith and We Are The Horsemen. The artists got together in London for this one with the very special help of the great Kaidi Tatham, a broken beat innovator who helps make this one a future-jazz-flavoured trip with next level mic work. The original of 'London Is The Place' is a dark and menacing cut with muffled but dynamic beats and mystic distant sax lines as well as plenty of sci-fi effects and metropolitan glow. The B-side features a version with Kaidi Tatham and also a Kool Jazz mix. What a potent EP this is.

Review: Kool Keith has described his long-awaited sequel to solo career height Black Elvis as 'equal parts street and space', and that bears out in the music. It features the likes of Marc Live, Raaddrr Van, Dynamite, L'Orange, J. Stylez, Agallah and Ice-T and is Keith's attempt to re-elevate the rap art form he feels has too often been dumbed down. The beats are dark, the lyrical themes are just as shady but always real. Those features do a fine job of elevating the tunes rather than being for the sake of it, ensuring this will be as well received as the first installment.

Review: Kool Keith is something of an outsider rapper, having garnered a huge legacy not for himself not as the result of huge cosigns or mega-album deals, but many a contribution to the underground under a plethora of different guises and characters. His latest LP, Mr. Controller, flaunts this penchant for experimentation via a massive - dare we say planet-eating - range of tunes ranging from dancehall to dub to trap to boom-bap. All of them hear Keith rap elegantly but nonchalantly, unintimidated by the resulting sonic twists and turns.

Review: The Night Took Us In Like Family is the first collaborative album from American producer L'Orange and cultured rapper Jeremiah Jae. The Mellow Music label originally released it back in 2015 and it performed well with some fine guest appearances from Gift of Gab and Homebody Sandman. The album is rife with beautiful storytelling from Jae who delivers his ideas in a gangsta rap style but the first-rate beats are more soulful, giving rise to a style the pair called 'noir hop'. They are louche, lo-fi and drawn from the golden era of boom-bap with plenty of smart samples.

Review: L'Orange is a pretty prodigious and prolific producer who has worked with a wide range of collaborators in his time. For Time? Astonishing! he has joined up with a bona-fide legend in Kool Keith as well as calling upon some fine features from the likes of J-Live, Mr. Lif, Open Mike Eagle, Blu, Montage One, DJ Trackstar, MC Paul Barman, and MindsOne. It's a a great mix of vibes that appeal to both fans of heady and cerebral hip hop and those who simply like to get lost in sorted and hazy beats. L'Orange does a fine job of adapting his sound to fit the mercurial Kool Keith style and the result is a rather hallucinatory listen.

Review: Mello Music have decided to give this new album Time? Astonishing! from prodigious talent L'Orange and legendary hip-hop mic man Kool Keith the full treatment and serve it up on an array of different formats. This version comes on orange and blue vinyl so it looks as good as it sounds. L'Orange has worked with a wide range of collaborators in the past and this one features a number of fine guests such as f J-Live, Mr. Lif, Open Mike Eagle, Blu, Montage One, DJ Trackstar, MC Paul Barman, and MindsOne. Musically it is a great mix of vibes that appeal to both fans of heady and cerebral hip-hop and those who simply like to get lost in sorted and hazy beats. The two different talents come together in a fascinating new middle ground that makes this another LP well wroth hearing.

Review: Rap duo Marlowe aka mad writer L'Orange and rap prodigy Solemn Brigham mix up psychedelic beats and breakneck flows and have won fan and critical acclaim for it. They have raised the bar for hip-hop in the UK and managed to straddle the line between both commercial success and underground credibility. The two previous self-titled records saw the pair up their game and now this third entry does the same. Ruff Mercy is the unofficial third member of the collective and this version of the long player comes on purple and blue vinyl.

Review: On Signature, Joell Ortiz's raw lyrical prowess converges with L’Orange's time-honed production chops, resulting in a pure collaborative bombshell. L'Orange crafts beats exuding an undeniable vintage charm, which mesh delectably with Ortiz’s frank flows and delivery; most notable among these fusions is ‘In My Feelings’, detailing Ortiz’s upbringing as a young Brooklynite in search of purpose, then reflecting on his self-actualisation since those day ones. Not all is peachy, though: ‘Masked Up’ draws compelling metaphorical parallels between music industry rejection and harder street hustling, and L’Orange’s hazed-out stomper of a beat wickedly complements these harder-than-nails travails.

Review: Brooklyn don Joell Ortiz is back with one of his most potent partnerships to date. L'Orange is the kind of hip-hop producer who knows how to bridge the gap between sample-rooted nostalgia and head-twisting innovation, and so we're gifted with a full suite of beats that shock on first listen before burrowing their way into your subconscious before the second bar is finished. It's the perfect backdrop for Ortiz to lay down his crystal clear street tales, delivered with the perfect blend of venom, humour, sensitivity and stubbornness - gifts hard won on his rise to the top of the rap pile and deployed to devastating effect on this album.
