Review: Whether it be his eighth mixtape or tenth album (as fans, journalists and the interweb often disagree on the categorisations of his myriad projects), endlessly prolific MC and producer Michael Jordan Bonema, better known by his succinct stage-name MIKE, returns with one of his most mature and clearly visualised works to date. Beware Of The Monkey owes somewhat of a debt to Bonema's mentor Earl Sweatshirt; particularly his 2018 album Some Rap Songs, with both projects taking a chopped n' screwed approach to boom bap, intertwined with warped soul and r&b samples, whilst subtly highlighting the modern form of avant-garde outsider hip-hop which is burgeoning from the inside out. Fully self-produced under his dj blackpower alias, the LP is an exercise in abstract simplicity, evoking MF DOOM at his most challenging, yet all the while retaining a welcoming warmth that prevents the material from ever crossing over into impenetrable territory.

Review: Following the release of Jim Jarmusch movie Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai in 1999, many hip-hop heads were keen for the RZA's immaculate soundtrack - his first movie score - to get a release. It did, but only in Japan. Finally, the RZA has put that right, and now the soundtrack, which features a number of contributions from the Wu-Tang Clan, is available around the world via this new pressing. Largely warm, light and airy, much of the material mixes traditional instrumentation - electric piano, various Japanese instruments, guitar - with head-nodding hip-hop beats and the kind of obscure, Blaxploitation-era funk samples that have long been a staple of the RZA's work. It's a great set of instrumentals, with just enough forthright vocal cuts to keep things fresh.

Review: Mike Skinner's evolution alongside his band The Streets has been a fine one that has very much told the tale of youth culture from his early party days to more emotionally aware works and on to this new album The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light. It features Skinner being less slavish to tight and coherent rhymes that make immediate sense and instead cutting loose, allowing his language and references to be more free and abstract. Review: The debut full-length from George Kusunoki Miller, once better known as the YouTube characters Filthy Frank and Pink Guy, came after a poised transition to move his internet celebrity status and legions of avid followers over to a rebranded, sincere musical project under the moniker of Joji. Following on from 2017's promising In Tongues EP, the Ballads 1 LP would drop in 2018 and take the entire cloudrap scene by storm with its nuanced use of vaporwave-inflected trap production, drugged out R&B and melancholic penmanship. Serving as the launching pad for the stratospheric heights the project has reached since, this five year anniversary edition arrives with new artwork in a gatefold sleeve, and boasts some of the most essential cuts from both Miller's catalogue and internet hip-hop as a mass entity, including 'Slow Dancing In The Dark', 'Test Drive' and 'Yeah Right', while also featuring production credits from Clams Casino and a guest-verse from Trippie Redd.

Review: As Valet is a Paris-based abstract-instrumental-space-hip-hop beat producer who manages to combine the futuristic with the ancient and ritualistic on this album. It's both cosmic yet organic, expansive yet intimate with tumbling beats that sound loose and live, sprinkles of starry melody and plenty of warm jungle humidity from the percussion. Guests such as LaNote, Lanoir, Raphael Neblai and Jewice add some vocal magic and this one is, then, sure to become a real cult classic in no time at all thanks to its unique mix of all those different worlds but also, quite simply, its damn nice vibes.

Review: The Good People & Shar The Analog Bastard featuring Masta Ace is another dope project from this collaborative team. Star himself has produced, mixed and mastered all six of these tunes which are steeped in a classic sound. 'Just Begun' is a nice deep opener with lush chords and smooth mic work. 'When It Comes' brings some great samples and jazzy melodies and 'The Feel' is a real smoker's delight with bendy melodies and Masta Ace in top form. Further guests Meraxx and El Da Sensei add extra character to this tidy EP.

Review: Back in 1991, PT House's debut album Big World introduced Soweto rapper Nelson Mohale (who was later known as Dr House) to South Africa's burgeoning house and kwaito scene. Collaborating with producer Danny Bridgens, known for his work with Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Margino, the newly formed pair fused US and UK hip-house influences with local flavours and always imbued their music with a positive outlook for the future. Now reissued for the first time on Afrosynth Records, the small but well-formed four-track record remains a bold testament to their vision and has more than stood the test of time with its vibrant energy and forward-looking spirit.

Review: The criticism of Anderson .Paak's last album, the glossy, big-budget "Oxnard", was so voluminous that his mum took to social media to defend it. The fast-rising rapper laughed off the haters at the time, but it must have hurt. Either way, he's changed direction again on "Ventura", a follow-up that's noticeably more refrained than its predecessor. Musically, what we're offered is stripped-back '70s soul and Prince style purple funk instrumentation fused with head-nodding hip-hop and R&B beats. Paak is lyrically on point throughout, eschewing some of his more sexually explicit lyrics in the post #MeToo era. To complete the picture of an artist going back to his roots, the assembled guests (Outkast's Andre 3000 included) are generally pushed to the background in an unobtrusive manner.

Review: Air Vinyl have secured a deal that allows them to reissue the seminal joint album by Benny The Butcher and 38 Spesh. The second part of the album comes later in the year, but the first one from 2018 is in the spotlight here. It's an accomplished affair that draws you int via lazy and long legged beats on the intro then gets more serious and confrontational on "Driver's Seat" (feat Styles P & Jadakiss). Social issues are address square on with tracks like "Gun Or Knife" and sweeter interludes like "Intro" (instrumental) help things move on without getting too heavy on one topic.
