Review: Reel People Music does a fine line in old school house, disco, funk and soul. It's reissued remixes of Robin S classics, put out albums by the label heads Reel People and now offers up a tasty vinyl sampler. Reel People themselves kick-off as remixed by Art of Tones and with the lush neo-soul vocals of Angie Stone on the mid-tempo disco-house-funk roller 'Don't Stop The Music.' Opolopo brings another soul-drenched deep disco sound with a great Angela Johnson vocal and Stro Elliot's Roller Rink rework is a nice lazy beat for cosy backroom dances. DJ Spinna does his signature soulful thing on the gloriously groovy 'Tonight We Ride'.

Review: Californian pair KG Superstar & B.Valentine join forces to bring plenty of island influences to some steamy and funky house music here. 'Get Up' features KG's expressive Jamaican style vocals with lots of B.Valentine ad libs which are designed to get those asses shaking and hands in the air. It's a perfect party time cut that comes in the form of FRZVL's Massive main mix and then a more clipped and funky dubstyle version. DJ Spinna then shows his class with his Galactic dub Vox which is all percussive energy and broken beat loops.

Review: Spinna's double-decade document on BBE is an essential lesson in the dark art of remix craft. And here are five perfect examples. His take on "The Power" by Karizma subverts from the off as we're washed with a waterfall of bitter sweet acid. The remix of Bah Samba's "Moonlight" shows Spinna at his most cosmic and reflective while "Got To Let It Go" is straight up jazz church music. Deeper again we find him in straight up bassline soul mode on the Wonder-esque "I Remember Love" while his take on "You Can't Lie", a hookup between Kerri Chandler and Harley & Muscle, is more street soul than it is house music. Truly timeless.

Review: DJ Spinna's ability to seamlessly segue between hip-hop and soulful house in both his productions and DJ sets has long marked him out as a genuine one-off. It's interesting to note, though, that little effort has previously been made by labels to celebrate the more 4/4 side of his output. With The Sound Beyond The Stars, BBE is aiming to right this wrong by gathering together two CDs worth of his greatest Southport Weekender-friendly house remixes. Review: For the latest installment in the ongoing Southport Weekender series, longtime friends of the festival Mr Scruff and DJ Spinna step up to the decks to lay down soulful selection inspired by their sets at the event. Scruff handles disc one, joyously flitting between 25 classic soul, funk, deep house, boogie and US garage cuts over the course of 75 enjoyable minutes. Given his obsession with six-hour sessions, you wonder why he doesn't play more short sets; he certainly has the skills and records to pull it off. Spinna's disc, meanwhile, is altogether deeper and smoother. Kicking off with some shuffling broken beats, the hip-hop/house producer builds a mix that touches on breathless vocal house, bumpin' garage and slick, liquid deepness.
